Masego Gets Saxy With Big Boi & JID in ‘Garden Party’

Following up Masego‘s 2020 highly acclaimed Studying Abroad: Extended Stay album, comes his newest release, ‘Garden Party.’ For this new single, the artist enlists the help of two Atlanta legends, Outkast’s Big Boi and JID.

In true Masego fashion, ‘Garden Party’ is sultry as fuck. The musician plays his saxophone throughout, giving a soulful feel to balance the beat’s hard drums. Masego, JID, and Big Boi each take turns spitting bars between the chorus, piggybacking off of each other to create a true party vibe. JID’s verse is the song’s leading light for me, stringing his words together so effortlessly, almost giving me a buzz by just listening. But of course, Big Boi brought up the heat, going hard (pun intended) over the sexy melody.

While turn-up tracks aren’t new, ‘Garden Party’ brings a fresh spin that makes you want to dress up and get crazy at the closest kickback.

Brasstracks & Masego Bring Us ‘Melanin Man’

Earlier today Brasstracks tweeted “we just want to make music that makes you feel good”. Considering the stream of uplifting and infectious releases they’ve put out this year (‘Telling The Truth,’ ‘Good Love,’ & ‘Get Your Way’) it’s safe to say that they’re accomplishing their goal. With their Good Love EP just 1 day away the Brooklyn based duo decided to let off one more feel good anthem ahead of its release. ‘Melanin Man’ features soulful production that balances perfectly between classic vibes and forward thinking sounds. Masego comes through with show stealing vocals that take this one to new heights. Although his delivery maintains a care-free swagger the lyrics touch on heavier subjects of cultural appropriation, prejudice, societal issues and more. Despite its depth it still manages to sound light, empowering and irresistible. It’s this balance that makes it so impressive. Stream below and look out for Good Love tomorrow.

Masego Unleashes ‘Loose Thoughts’ Project

Last year Masego exploded onto our radar with the release of his incredible collaborative project with Medasin Pink Polo. The EP introduced the world to Masego’s inventive Trap House Jazz style and proved that Masego and Medasin are two of the brightest talents in the game. Building upon this fact comes the solo project from Masego entitled Loose Thoughts. As the title suggests it is a collection of unreleased music and demos. Masego told Vibe, “This is just the stuff that if they don’t come out now, they’ll never come out. This is like the B-squad. The cut squad ain’t varsity but they can all still dunk.” Don’t let his words fool you, these definitely don’t sound like B-cuts. The project is diverse but cohesive featuring a broad range of tunes from infectious and groovy (‘Too Much’ ‘Send Yo Rita,’ and ‘Wifeable’) to mellowed out (‘I Do Everything (More For Cruisin’)’ to raw flavour (‘YOU GON’ LEARN SOME JAZZ TODAY’). Loose Thoughts showcases Masego’s incredible talent as a singer, rapper, musician and producer. The braggadocios ‘I DO EVERTHING’ is the exclamation point where Masego runs down just how talented he truly is. All while making a smooth cut and intertwining some humour, “Do you play the trumpet? Naw Brasstracks.” Stream the project below. If these are his throwaways his next project is going to change the game.

Masego x Medasin – Pink Polo EP

When I first listened to Masego and Medasin’s ‘Shut Up and Groove’ I was elated. The combination of commanding vocals, jazzy feels, future bass and trappy percussion blended for a sound that left a smile plastered on my face. The track, which happens to be the opener of their collaborative Pink Polo EP, sets the tone perfectly for the remainder of the project. Pink Polo is one of the most unique releases of the year. A perfect hybrid of jazz scats, scattered raps, sax riffs and forward thinking production. Each track packs a taste of something unique while remaining cohesive and fluent. It’s a breathe of fresh air that challenges the norms both lyrically (“I don’t want to hear no more Drake raps”) and musically. Music is meant to make you feel something and I guarantee this’ll make you feel good, real good. Stream below and cop the project on Bandcamp.
