Here at FUXWITHIT, we live and breathe for those no-nonsense trap records. One quick look around the scene and you’ll realize that these tracks are becoming few and far between nowadays. So many producers have swayed away from the sample/drum centric culture that built the foundation for the electronic trap genre, but there are some left that prefer to stick with their hip-hop roots and it shows. Binks and Pryzms have become regulars on SKRONG, one of the few labels that still pushes that FUX favorite trap sound and one that is run by an OG Trap legend himself, Mayhem. This time the two return to SKRONG with their Regenesis EP, a testament to everything that makes trap great.

Before the full release, we were blessed with the two lead singles from the project ‘Limitless’ and ‘Trip’. Both giving us a sense of what is to come, with 808-heavy beats and melodic grooves. Moving on we have ‘Aura’ which begins with a melody being played by these sliding 808’s, which is then soon joined by an assortment of horns playing counter-melodies. Finally, we have ‘Whip it’, which leans more towards the festival trap side, with these gritty industrial synths in the drop accompanied by these pounding 808s. Check out the full project down below!

LA Native BINKS is no stranger to the trap game. Rewind to 2014, a simpler time where BINKS is one-half of the now infamous EDM trap duo, Pyramid Juke. Since then, the beat wizard has signed with trap legend Mayhem on his label SKRONG and has become one of the most relevant names on the roster. Starting in 2016 with his debut ep Frequencies, BINKS has constantly leveled up his production methods. Recently, the seasoned veteran teamed up with fellow label member Pryzms to give us two hard-hitting trap tracks with an emphasis on heavy-808s and hypnotizing melodic loops, but this time BINKS give us his take of Mayhem & Armanni Reign’s collaboration ’38 Special.’

Right from the start, we realize that the tone of this remix is slightly more menacing than the original. With brooding synths growling throughout the intro and an accelerando occurring within the percussion, the intro wonderfully builds suspense into the first drop section. During which, the emphasis placed on these large 808s combined with Armanni Reign’s unparalleled flow. Around two minutes, all vocals are dropped out and substituted with an almost brand new beat, with a heavy emphasis on the groove and melodies located within the percussion elements. Check out the full track down below!

Atlanta is hotbed for trap related activities. It’s no surprise that the influence trap rap music has had on the scene there has bled over into the EDM scene. Mayhem was at the forefront of bringing trap into electronic music and today he’s back with a brand new track, titled, ‘Odyssey,’ and in it, he creates an epic journey through sound.

‘Odyssey’ begins with an ever hopeful atmosphere that quickly shifts into a much more ominous vibe, gaining intensity until Mayhem unleashes an incredible trap influenced soundscape filled with wonky lead basses and spot on percussion that is sure to make dance floors erupt. The second drop has a much different feel, opting to use a dark, unflinching, wavy bass line to carry the rhythm through. ‘Odyssey’ uses heavy drums that really stand out and give the track a major push forward in terms of how impressive Mayhem’s sound design is. As it fades out, the listener is returned to that hopeful atmosphere, instilling a sense that your journey is complete.

‘Odyssey’ is truly a remarkable piece of work, blurring the barriers between genres, it takes the listeners on a beautiful journey through Mayhem’s mind.

Stream ‘Odyssey’ below.

In the culinary world, Omakase refers to trusting the chef. Instead of ordering off the menu you put your faith in the chef’s masterful hands, uncertain about what they’ll deliver, but confident that it will be special. Mayhem embodies this principle with his latest release. The multifaceted ‘Omakase’ gives us a variety of options to satiate our senses. The first course is classic trap with an eastern undertone. A drum build crafts anticipation for the main course: a filthy dubstep and trap hybrid that’ll almost knock you out of your chair. If the flavours proved a bit too heavy, don’t worry the back half is a palate cleanser. Mayhem switches out the gritty and strong flavours for an offering that’s sweet and easy to digest; an audio dessert to cap off your culinary adventure. Dig in below.

One of our main goals at FUXWITHIT is to help new artists. Whether it’s by showcasing their releases, doing spotlights, interviews, offering them guest mix slots, or in some cases, providing advice. One of the biggest pieces of advice I constantly hear from successful artists is that new artists need to invest in their careers. But what does that mean exactly? Is it money? Is it time? How exactly should artists invest? With these questions in mind, I opted to reach out to some of our favourite artists and industry experts to get answers. We’re proud to provide you with advice from Andrew Luce, Anna Lunoe, Craze, Chad Kenney, HXV, the Jadu Dala team, Mayhem, Nick Cathdubs, TroyBoi, Stööki Sound, Yehme2 and Willy Joy. There’s a few common themes throughout like perfecting your craft and saving money, but it’s amazing just how unique each person’s perspective is.

Read their advice and put it into practice.

Andrew Luce

Why Should You Listen: Andrew Luce has been wowing fans online since he was fifteen. After making a name for himself off of remixes, he moved on to crafting stunning original work that includes his debut EP BLANC. As the Co-Founder of Daruma he’s helped put on a multitude of artists and is consistently working to help develop new talent.

Advice: “When you’re getting started, learn the technical and musical basics first. Put genres, cool artwork and branding, and everything else aside until you learn those skills, because those are things you have to learn, not talent you’re born with. When you have your basics in order, think about what’s unique about yourself that you can translate into your music. Always have a clear vision – if you don’t, stop everything you’re doing and figure it out. When you have it figured out, work towards that vision every single day. And save as much money as you can.”

Anna Lunoe

Why You Should Listen: Anna Lunoe is the queen of electronic music. She’s a Producer, Singer, DJ, Radio Host and Label Owner. She was the first solo female to ever play EDC Las Vegas’ main stage and continues to break down gender barriers in the dance music space. With two massive brands (her own and Hyperhouse) and over ten years of grinding, she’s proof that hard work pays.

Advice: “Invest in your creativity and owning your work. Each person’s situation is different so it’s tricky to give blanket rules here, but I wish I had realized that no one is going to come along and make my project happen… and if they do, it might be at a bigger cost than it’s worth! If you have a body of work you are proud of, and you are in a position to make it work within your own resources, it’s possible now. A catchy song can spread like wildfire, and even the songs with the biggest budgets can go nowhere if they don’t react, so it really comes down to focused creative work, timing, and a little bit of luck! At this point, doing music is only for people who would do it even if no one was listening, because there are no guarantees! Anything and nothing is possible at all times and I mean that in the most encouraging way.”

Chad Kenney

Why You Should Listen: Chad Kenney is the Events Producer behind Brownies & Lemonade. The company went from throwing house parties to becoming one of the most well-respected brands in the industry. From small art gallery shows to curating stages for biggest festivals in the world including Ultra, their drive to consistently debut new talent is what helped them to carve out an ever expanding niche. Expect to see their name on events around the world and even more festivals. He is also the Co-Founder of Shifty Rhythms and is currently working with Fool’s Gold as an A&R Consultant if that wasn’t enough.

Advice: “I would say that anyone starting out in any creative field should have a rough business model or frame of reference that they can use to establish some consistency in their work. When you are an artist of any kind, having some semblance of structure allows you to harness that creativity and executive ideas better. Whether it be a release schedule, a list of goals you hit every week, or anything of that nature, you should enable yourself to do something day-to-day that adds to the foundation of your career.”

Craze

Why You Should Listen: Multiple DMC World titles, Co-Founder of Slow Roast Records and 20 years in the game makes Craze the definition of an OG. As half of 2 Cents he recently flipped the game on its head calling names and deading all the bullshit. Raw skills and knack for always being ahead of the curve have made Craze a certified legend.

Advice: “New artists should invest time in becoming good at whatever it is they wanna be doing.”

HXV

Why You Should Listen: Aside from helping to birth the trap movement with artists like Mayhem, Flosstradamus and a few others, HXV is always looking to push boundaries. He’s been a mainstay in the Atlanta music scene for years and is constantly reinventing himself without ever drifting too far from his core. Whether it’s on Twitter or in interviews, few artists drop more gems than HXV.

Advice: “I think one of the best investments new artists can make in their careers is to spend time researching art and artists across all spectrums. All genres of music, all mediums, really study art that is universally considered great. I realize all art is subjective but look at the classics or things that have stood the test of time – not just what is popular at the moment. Pick it apart and study what’s good or what’s bad about it. Taking that time to sit with and learn and then going on the journey of discovering your own voice in your art allows you to be able to stand on the shoulders of those who came before you. The internet has given us such an opportunity to obtain information – use it.”

Jadu Dala Team

Why You Should Listen: Jadu Dala is the future of labels in electronic music. No label has been as consistently pushing the boundaries while providing quality releases (weekly) like Jadu Dala. They find new talent before anyone else in the industry and are always working to help artists expand.

Advice: “There are a lot of important things that artists should invest their time into, with that being said, one of the most important things is the people around you. You want to surround yourself with positive and uplifting people. Making the right connections from the start will pay off in the long haul.”

Mayhem

Why You Should Listen: Mayhem has over 20 years in the game. From his DnB days, to pioneering trap and working to help evolve the genre, Mayhem is simply the man. He’s also the head of Skrong, a fresh label and management group. Anyone who runs a label and displays this kind of longevity as an artist is rich with wisdom.

Advice: “I think all artists new and old should invest as much energy as possible into creating works of art that have purpose. Creating a dope record sonically is far too easy with Cymatics, Vengeance,
Nexus and the likes at our disposal. Crafting a record that is larger than life comes from designing an environment that the listener can submerge themselves in. Utilizing video and cover art to convey the concept you’ve crafted in audio will be worth it’s weight in gold as we move forward into the era of infinite. At the core of it all is a concept that binds the purpose of the record to its visual counterpart. Find your purpose, take your time, and drop content that matches the blood, sweat and tears we pour into our music.”

Nick Catchdubs

Why You Should Listen: Producer, DJ, Music Writer, and Co-Founder of Fool’s Gold Records, Nick Catchdubs isn’t just in the industry, he is the industry. Building one of the most highly regarded independent labels in music doesn’t happen by chance. He can also speak from more perspectives than pretty much anyone out there, combining his broad experience into one extremely well-informed viewpoint.

Advice: “The most important thing an artist should be investing in – at any stage of their career – is the art itself. It’s very tempting to measure yourself against others, to look at a studio pic and say ‘if I get this piece of gear, I’ll make music like so and so.’ But it’s not about the gear, it’s the ideas that go into it. (Steven Soderbergh has an Oscar and makes his movies with an iPhone now, you know?) Learn your existing setup inside and out. MAKE THINGS constantly…if you’re always learning, each track will be better than the last. Put the work first, and everything else will fall into place.”

TroyBoi

Why You Should Listen: TroyBoi is the embodiment of independent success while staying true to ones art. His music is unapologetically weird and genre-defying. With an incredible debut album under his belt that boasted a feature from Ice Cube and multiple solo headlining tours around the world, it’s hard to not look up to the London producer. While many artists sell out at their first chance, Troy continues to remain committed to the art and somehow still find massive success.

Advice: “New artists should definitely invest time in working and perfecting their craft. Quality is always better than quantity. If you believe in yourself, investing money into your vision is key. At the end of the day, if you pull off what you intended, the reward and further opportunities are priceless.”

Stööki Sound

Why You Should Listen: Stööki Sound are UK trap legends who also helped define the genre. With millions of plays online, multiple world tours and collaborations with some of the biggest artists in the game, their reputation is well-established. Stööki Sound’s is ever expanding, adding influences from grime, world and experimental bass music while retaining the core elements that fans love. They always know how to keep things fresh without ever bending to keep up with trends.

Advice: “Invest time into your mental health. People underestimate the importance of having a strong foundation to work from. Everything moves so fast nowadays that it’s easy to lose yourself.”

YehMe2

Why You Should Listen: YehMe2 went from a party-rocking local DJ in Chicago to becoming half of one of the most iconic duos in dance music with Flosstradamus. But his success didn’t happen overnight, it took years. He also opted to leave Flosstradamus at its peak to explore his own solo pursuits and regain full creative control. He started from nothing and won the race. Now he’s on a victory lap. All that said, he still remains a humble family man who consistently impresses with every release.

Advice: “Save your money. Set up a SEP IRA. Be patient. It’s a marathon not a sprint. Take calculated risks. When you fail, fail BIG. Learn from your failures…that’s where all the best lessons are.”

Willy Joy

Why You Should Listen: As a DJ and Producer he’s played around the world and dropped tracks on the hottest labels out including Fool’s Gold, Mad Decent, TWONK and more. Finding a gap in the dance music scene, Willy Joy recently launched his Back To Back podcast, the first long form talk podcast for the dance community. With guests like Diplo, Keys N Krates, NGHTMRE, and Destructo, Willy is soaking up game every week and is truly doing it for the culture.

Advice: “Learning the craft has to be treated like a full-time job, and you have to show up for work every day. I think one of the most valuable things a new artist can do for their career is to exercise patience, try something new every day, and make hundreds of songs that no one will ever hear. A large investment in time early on will pay off huge down the road.”

Mayhem is the definition of an OG in the game. With over 20 years in the industry, he’s produced across a multitude of genres and even worked to define some. He was instrumental in the creation of (electronic) trap, blurring the lines between rap and electronic music going back as far as 2005. Earlier this year he released his debut album 2083, an amalgamation of trap, dubstep, future bass, rap, R&B and even shades of his drum and bass roots. It’s a boundary pushing affair that showcases just how talented and creative he truly is. Keeping his momentum going, Mayhem just connected with Flosstradamus & Waka Flocka for the trap anthem ‘Back Again.’ With a massive 2017 on the horizon we had to connect with Mayhem for an interview. We discussed his role in creating the trap genre, its evolution, life lessons from his 20+ year career, his goals as a label owner, 2083 and more. Check out the full conversation below.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/300082069″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

When I spoke to HXV he mentioned that you two were integral in the creation of the (electronic) trap genre. Can you take us back to that time? What was your role in creating or building the genre?

We were instrumental in the creation of the electronic/dance version of “trap,” well before most of the prominent producers who championed the sound came into the arena. We’re talking 2005 when Ed Banger and the blog house movement was ripe and shaking up the way the industry approached releasing and distributing music. Back then HXV was known as DJMEGANFOXX and I was producing under the pseudonym Rrrump with two of my homies while Mayhem was almost exclusively a D&B brand. Taking cues from DJ Nappy’s Thugstep mixtapes as well as Sub.Mission and DJ Subliminal whom I lived with at the time. Both Nappy and Subliminal were both mixing rap records/acapellas into their dubstep mixes and it was a localized fresh perspective on the drum & bass music I had been producing almost exclusively leading up to this period. This is the time frame where I had started to itch to create something that transcended Dance Music and could live in a more mainstream space without being corny. I started to remix things like MJG x 8 Ball’s ’10 Toes Down,’ Boomman’s ‘Up In Here,’ amongst a lot of material that I never released publicly. HXV was vocal engineering T.I., Young L.A. and several other Grand Hustle artists. We started throwing parties around 2009 called Heavy and Haute Mess. These were the blueprint for what transpired after. We were mixing rap, dubstep and electro and the parties set the city on fire. We booked acts like Yellawolf, F.L.Y., 12th Planet, Sinden, and put an extremely diverse crowd into venues. Eventually we linked with FKi to produce ‘Transformers N The Hood’ with Diplo’s blessing. This is when shit got really interesting. FKi saw the same vision but really helped us put it into something tangible. Soon after acts like Flosstradamus, RL Grime, Baauer and UZ came along and shaped the genre in a very serious way.

There was a period where it stagnated and a lot of bandwagon producers wanted to jump on the trend, marginalizing the originality of the founders, but now that the hype has settled the dust has cleared for a new generation of producers…

How do you feel about the evolution of the genre over the past few years?

I think it’s continuing to evolve in a healthy way. There was a period where it stagnated and a lot of bandwagon producers wanted to jump on the trend, marginalizing the originality of the founders, but now that the hype has settled the dust has cleared for a new generation of producers like graves, Diskord, Ricky Remedy, QUIX, Hydroski, KRANE, etc. to push the genre to new heights.

You’be been making music for 20+ years. What’s the greatest lesson you’ve learned in that time?

Be yourself. Trust your gut. Don’t be afraid to make something you love but fear others may not understand. Own yourself and never apologize for it.

Can you tell us a little bit about SKRONG and what we can expect from the label?

I started SKRONG back in 2014 to release ‘Takeoff’ independently. I needed a vessel to push my music out to retailers without signing my rights away to someone else. You can expect a lot of different music to be released on SKRONG with a no frills attitude. When I launched the label, I didn’t dump a dollar into promoting or PRing it. I want its growth to be organic and its quality to speak for itself rather than building some fake sense of hype. BINKS is our first signing to the label. He’s formerly part of the duo Pyramid Juke whom always made some of the most played tunes in my set. When he launched this new alias I wanted to help him grow into the profile he deserves. I make a strong point to work with people who have their heart and head in the right place. No diva, fame addicted, pretentious type of vibes are allowed. I want to surround myself and the label with folks who are positive, humble and grateful for the opportunities we’re provided. In 2017 we’re going to ramp up the release schedule, and continue to build a healthy home for talented producers who want to push their unique vibe!

I started raving at 13 and have seen the American scene rise, fall and – like the symbol of Atlanta, the Phoenix – rise again from the ashes.

As a DJ and label owner, what makes you get behind a song or artist to show support?

I’m a fan first and foremost. I started playing music at 8 and listened to the tapes my parents bought me so much they wore out and had to be replaced. I started raving at 13 and have seen the American scene rise, fall and – like the symbol of Atlanta, the Phoenix – rise again from the ashes. I know the struggles of a fan and an artist so it’s a blessing to be in a position where I can not only support upcoming talent while acting as a role model for what this scene is really predicated on. If an artist makes incredible, unique music: I want to support that with everything I can muster, especially if their heart is in the music and culture.

In the past few years, music, especially electronic music, has been moving to a more single driven focus. What made you decide to craft a full length album vs. putting out singles or an EP?

I wanted to make a statement with my debut album. I put out a lot of singles over the years and tried making an album two times previously with only failure and a couple of singles as a result. As I felt my sound was stagnating and not incorporating new and exciting ideas, I did a lot of soul searching. I wanted to reform my purpose, find the inspiration I had been looking for, and create a work of art that was cohesive yet all over the place and above all definitively me. The album gave me the sense of freedom that I could do whatever I wanted to without fear of recourse. I’m absolutely in love with the process, will continue to buck the trend, and continue to produce larger format concept albums.

What would life be like when I’m 100 years old? To share is to live, so what better way for my art to transcend my existence than by burying a time capsule in the year 2017 with this album on it.

What is the significance of the title 2083?

I was born in 1983. As I searched for inspiration outside of myself, I realized the greatest inspiration of all was inside of me the whole time. Every movie, record, piece of art, person I met, love I gained, love I lost, all of that defined me. The anime I grew up on, the rock, rap, and dance music I decorated my ears with was the core of my existence. It was inside me, not on me. When I approached the concept for 2083, I wanted to paint that picture in an epic proportion. What would life be like when I’m 100 years old? To share is to live, so what better way for my art to transcend my existence than by burying a time capsule in the year 2017 with this album on it. The idea would be that 66 years later it would be unearthed, becoming the soundtrack for an intergalactic adventure in a future world. I’ve teased visions of what Atlanta, one of my biggest inspirations, would look like in that setting through the single artwork for ‘Amazon,’ ‘Artificial,’ and ‘Back Up.’ In a hit the lotto scenario, I would have coupled a 45 minute movie to go along with 2083 but for now that concept will be applied to a future album.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/288679692″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

You had the chance to connect with another trap OG in UZ for ‘Amazon’. How did the collab come together?

I’ve always been a fan of UZ’s music, aesthetic and attitude. I had left the studio after working with 12th Planet on ‘Unheaven’ and returned to find UZ had pulled up. We started ‘Amazon,’ sent it back and forth over 2 years and finally finished it up to be included on 2083. I absolutely love working with him and his team at the Quality Goods imprint. Expect more from us in the future!

One of the album’s standouts has to be ‘Dad Hat’. There’s got to be a story behind the title and the track?

Probably not as complex as you may think. Oski and I have a bunch of stuff we started together but this one stood out immediately. We needed a pre-drop vocal so I hopped in the vocal booth. Matt was wearing a dad hat so I just yelled “NICE DAD HAT” and we both cried laughing so it had to stay.

The album was released on Spotify and Apple Music but not on SoundCloud. What prompted this decision? Do you see yourself continuing to move away from the platform?

I’ve seen a horrific decline in the interactions on my page. It was an amazing platform for a long time to get music into new ears. Lately it’s been dominated by repost groups, fake profiles, promoted songs, abuse and inflated plays. I’m not into that game. I don’t feel like blindly reposting songs from peers for the sake of them reposting just to get the appearance that a lot of people are listening. I want genuine listeners on the format where I’m at least getting some income from the streams. After rolling out several EP releases in the past, I felt like uploading an entire package in a short time frame was a waste of the hard work I put into the album. I plan on uploading at least one more record off 2083 before moving on to my next project but as HXV told me a long time ago “When they zig, you have to zag.”

Where do you see your music going from here?

I think ‘Artificial’ featuring Swazy is a good indication. More emphasis on chords, progressions, harmony and song structure. I’ve envisioned the rap & R&B of the future. Full fledged vocal records with all my inspirations mashed up into one.

Atlanta based producer Mayhem has been at the forefront of bass and electronic trap music for quite some time. With the release of 2083 he proves once again that he’s ahead of the game. As the title track opens things up, it gives listeners the perfect tease of what’s to come; beautiful melodic sections, hints of future bass and the raw intensity that fans have come to expect. From there it moves into the UZ assisted ‘Amazon,’ a jungle-inspired heater that’s exactly what you’d expect from the two trap titans. ‘Unheaven’ kicks the energy up even more, before Mayhem strips things down on ‘MNML.’ The hypnotizing simplicity and snapping drums make it an instant standout. Keeping you on your toes, ‘Artificial’ switches things up, providing a future bass meets R&B aesthetic with a touch of trap. The upbeat feel makes the tidal wave of bass and filth that is ‘Dad Hat’ (featuring Oski) that much more potent. For bass heads looking for their fix, ‘Dad Hat’ is pure, uncut, straight to the vein dope.

2083 keeps rolling with quality. ‘Back Up’ combines breakbeat and club elements with a potent boom. Shifting gears once more comes ‘A Moment For Andrew,’ a sombre interlude that sets the stage for the final act. ‘Funk Will Never Die’ manages to drift between future feels and dubstep-esq wobbles for a sound like no other. Finally, ‘Reaktor’ closes things off, taking notes from the intro while pushing the listener even further. 2083 is a sonic journey through a multitude of sounds, genres and emotions. It’s expertly produced and perfectly packaged. Often times I wonder why electronic artists decide to release full length projects in today’s climate… this isn’t one of those times. Stream 2083 below and grab it on iTunes.

ATL producer and trap OG Mayhem is back to show us the future. A pioneer in the (electronic) trap space, Mayhem has always worked to push the sound forward. As he gears up for the release of his upcoming album 2083, it seems he’s looking to take that even further. Today he unleashed the title track; a fittingly futuristic genre bender. With ‘2083’ Mayhem weaves together elements of future bass, trap and dubstep for a transcendent journey through space and time. It’s hopeful and optimistic, uncertain and confusing, and jarring and violent. Moving between these extremes with envelope-pushing sound design is what makes this so special. If this is any indication of what his album is going to bring then January 6th can’t come soon enough. Stream below and grab the free download.
