When we think of SoundCloud stars, one of the first that comes to mind is Dallas native Grant Nelson, or as we all know him by, Medasin. Bursting onto the scene with massive remixes of Flume’s ‘Smoke & Retribution’ and Martin Garrix’s ‘Scared To Be Lonely,’ we’ve come to idolize his eclectic production style that seems to ride waves between genres and never disappoints. Fast forward to 2020 and we’ve seen the young prodigy become so much more than a SoundCloud golden boy, releasing his debut album Irene at only twenty years of age, along with a few official remixes for the likes of Portugal. The Man, and Local Natives. The Medasin project seems to always be evolving and it’s truly a pleasure to see someone who can put the blindfold on, ignore all fads and trends, and truly let the spirit of music guide his work. These wonderful traits are put on full display with Medasin’s second album RIPPLS, so sit back, put some nice headphones on, and let us guide you through this journey.

Starting our journey off, we have ‘Launch Console,’ a soulful intro filled with beautiful ambient synths that become more chaotic as time passes, truly giving one the sensation of being in a spacecraft during startup. Moving on we have ‘Friends,’ a masterful wavy ballad with the melody being played by a spacey legato synth, joined by a team of fresh percussion elements. ‘Endless Endeavor’ follows, a track that is carried by beautiful piano scales and a funky baseline that would even get James Brown moving.

The energy is turned up a notch with ‘Go Crazy,’ a collaboration with LA Hip-Hop artist Duckwrth. This track puts Medasin’s unparalleled drums on display, with percussion elements that seem just the right amount of hectic, and Duckwrth’s immaculate flow and cadence. Next up, we have ‘Beta Testing’, a track that truly showcases the musicality of Medasin, with extremely complex melodies and chords that seem straight out of a jazz production.

Collaborating with Naomi Wild on ‘Everytime,’ the intro is void of all drums and instead leans on Naomi’s voice and Medasin’s keys to drive the melody. By the time we reach the drop, we’re salivating, and rightfully so as we’re thrown into a section filled with punchy drums and a wavy melody. After a quick ‘Intermish’ filled with jazzy melodies and funky basslines, we’re thrown into ‘Ruminating’. At it’s core it is a psychedelic beat, carried by a beautiful spacey melody combined with thick underlying subs which pulsate low in the mix, giving this track texture that is unparalleled with anything out today.

We get a little break from the complex nature of the last track, with ‘Get By’ with Cautious Clay, featuring a light and soulful beat combined with Cautious’s pleasing tone. Medasin proceeds to give us ’Sumn Lite,’ which seems to be part Neo-funk and jazz, with melodies straight out of a video game and vocal samples that masterfully counter the main baseline. Moving on through our journey, we come across ’Retrospect’ with Jean Carter, a track with an uplifting beat sure to get you moving and the vocals of Jean Carter which seem to provide the perfect energy to this track.

Next up, the young prodigy takes a wack at the four-on-the-floor structure with ‘Melody X,’ a song filled with syncopated baselines and spirited melodies. As we near the end of our journey, we’re met with ‘Did Enough’, an emotional ballad with R&B Artist Khai, who rides the wave of Medasin’s keys perfectly with meaningful bars. Just as we took off, we must land. ‘Landing’ is the perfect end to our Journey, as all of the sounds we’ve heard throughout our journey come together to create a perfect soundscape that serves as the epilogue.

We’ve been referring to this album as a “journey” throughout this piece, and that’s exactly the word to describe this masterpiece. In an age where attention spans for music fans continue to shrink due to the vast amount of music that comes out every day, it’s so refreshing to see a project that is truly meant to be listened to from front to back. So grab a pair of headphones, close your eyes, and let the energy from RIPPLS sweep you away into the unknown. Stream the whole thing down below.

Remember when Frank Ocean made us wait over a year for Blonde? That’s kind of how we felt when Medasin teased a January release for his new album, Rippls, then said, “SIKE! You’re getting it in March.” Some might call me dramatic, but 2015 was anxiety-ridden due to waiting for that album drop!

But Grant Nelson (aka Medasin) made up for it in 2 ways. One: By being a shining light on EDM Twitter with his life stories and silly selfies. Two: with his new single ‘Get By’ with Cautious Clay.

https://twitter.com/MedasinMusic/status/1231665277705707521?s=20

Now if you’ve ever felt heartbreak, you’ve definitely heard a Cautious Clay song. I first heard about him when a boy who wouldn’t date me due to my race deadass played ‘Blood Type’ for me. While that hit too hard to home, I haven’t stopped listening to him since! His soothing, sexy vocals can make any sad tune make you feel less alone. ‘Get By’ is no different.

The track is about disappointment and what it feels like to be let down, but not surprised. And that’s something we can all relate to. Cautious Clay’s distressed yet divine vocals mixed with Medasin’s well-rounded production abilities make ‘Get By’ a song that we’ll be bumping to while driving with our top-down all Spring and Summer long. Especially when you want to get over whoever broke your heart during cuffing season.

Listen to ‘Get By’ below and don’t miss out on Medasin’s Rippls coming out on March 6. Also, going by Cautious Clay’s Twitter bio, he may be coming out with one soon, too!

As one of SoundCloud’s most esteemed producers, Medasin has established himself among the industry’s best through a wide variety of pristinely produced works. The Dallas-based producer displayed creative maturity with the release of his debut album IRENE, showing fans a more vulnerable side of himself while showcasing a sophisticated side of his musical capabilities. Last Friday, Medasin returned with his first release of the year, a statement single titled ‘Mr. Skitters’ that follows the same euphoric essence as his recent album.

‘Mr. Skitters’ is a true testament to the young producer’s ingenuity and versatility. Dreamy chords and soft percussion accentuate an otherworldly composition that leaves listeners feeling like they are floating through the fluffiest of clouds. Without ever disrupting the flow of the track, Medasin gradually builds the energy with plushy synths and delicate effects, before easing out just as smoothly. This latest track is a feel-good, cheerful work that is bound to put a smile on anyone’s face.

Don’t miss ‘Mr. Skitters’ below and keep an eye out for Medasin as 2019 promises to be a jam packed year for the talented producer.

It’s snowing heavily outside my window. I’m crying inside my heart. The thick snow flakes are slowly covering everything in a cold grip, Laxcity is filling my body with warm, burning emotions.

I don’t know about you, but after Ekali featured him four times in a single Awakening Mix, I knew it was just a matter of time before the two would cross paths again. It took a while, but good heavens, here we are. Stop wars, stop hate, today we’re kicking off a Winter of Love. Honestly I’m still quite mad about all the criticism and negative feedback the original faced. That extreme need of the community for something more ‘complicated’ really disappointed me, but this is another story. Instead, I’m ready to bet that not a single soul on this planet will have something to complain about with Laxcity’s interpretation of ‘Forever’. Not because I judge myself some kind of authoritative critic, but simply because it’s perfect under every point of view (yes, even the already-infamous transition at 1:01). Let’s be honest, it barely sounds like a remix. If we didn’t know the original, given how perfectly Elohim’s voice match with his chill style, it may seems that this was a long studied collaboration.

With his trademark orchestral arrangement, the London producer dismantles the pop construction of the original, making ‘Forever’ a musical stream of consciousness where Elohim’s breathtaking vocals can be appreciated even more. Between the piano, strings and voice, the composition elegantly sways like a candle in a dark room, a candle that warms and illuminates us, and at the same time projects and enlarges our shadows and fears.

No more than 20 years of age, Dallas-based producer, medasin, has thoroughly established himself as one of the most promising producers in the underground electronic music scene. Adopting an intensive approach to sound design, his style is equally simplistic as it is astonishingly intricate. A polished repertoire of remixes and heavy-hitting singles offered medasin the formal introduction onto the SoundCloud scene, while his collaboration with Ekali & Elohim, ‘Forever‘ was the final confirmation that this is merely the dawn of a prosperous future for this young talent.

Medasin’s debut project on ALT:VISION, IRENE, is a courageous display of creative maturity. Contrary to his conventional industrial trap sound, this album embraces a more euphoric vibe, yet simultaneously emphasizes the sophisticated essence that fans have grown to love. 9 tracks in total, the project resembles a warm spiritual journey, characterized with retro-synths and a serene tropical vibe. With each listen, a subtle complexity revealed itself to me as I grew more enamored with the brilliance of this unanticipated change of pace for medasin.

The opening track, ‘Weird Summer’ unwinds slowly like a spool of thread, reminiscent of a music box playing in reverse, the whirling synths and soft organ melody lay the foundation for the vibe of the entire project. A delicate metallic tapping leads into an addictive pattern of tropical notes in ‘Ramen’, as the percussion and retro melody assemble, the tune launches into a sensationally funky atmosphere; nostalgic of a jingle you might recall from an elevator. ‘Leaving Earth ‘ begins with a dismal chanting in the backdrop, culminating with the distinct sound of footsteps on a hard floor. The blade of the track unsheathes into a muffled radio frequency, which is quickly joined by a soothing piano melody. A pattern of wavering horns rise and fall in stature amid a medley of gentle clicking noises, which provide stunning complexity to an overtly simple track.

The interlude of the project, ‘Warm Blue’ reintroduces the retro-tropical appeal, a calming melody composed of luscious synths lingers into a peaceful melody, while a soothing chime calls in the distance. An uplifting beat leads into ‘Slinky Man’, which breaks into an obsessive pattern of chords, while a rhythmic drumming in the background and subtle laser noises provide a groovy undertone to the track. The bouncy, energetic intro in ‘Work For You’ unfolds into a pleasing array of vocals courtesy of Kaz Moon. Tight, metallic shaking, vibrant horns and perfectly timed breaks accentuate the vocals in the drop beautifully, providing a subtle hint of spice to the tune.

‘Home’ is riddled with overwhelmingly nostalgic significance, a divine melody of bells and enthralling pattern of falling synths and low repetitive bass hits, highlighted with angelic minimalist vocals provide a challenging yet familiar appeal to the track. A languishing organ precedes a succulent vocal lead from Sophie Meier’s in the emotion-ridden tune of the project, ‘Tired’. A deliberate pattern of plucking strings and floral synthesizers further emphasize Sophie’s exquisite vocals, giving a dreamlike vibe to the song.

As ‘Outro’ brings the project to a close, I can’t help but feel completely taken aback by this audacious, masterfully executed album. While the style is a fresh take for medasin, he continues to deliver on unparalleled intricacy and attention-to-detail in everything he releases, and IRENE falls nothing short of that standard.

Wonky brass is melded with rugged sound design, gun clicks, and dropping shells to set this one on fire. A solemn breakdown gives listeners a moment of reflection before things build up to the massive climax. Bringing in powerful chords with the aforementioned array of sounds take this one to 11/10. Earlier this week Medasin asked fans if he should, “release some hard shit?” This is just that. Stream ‘Territory’ below.
