Richmond, Virginia-based rSUN is one of those producers we’ve been meaning to snag for a guest mix for quite some time. Being a regular feature in our FUXWITHIT Fridays playlists as well as appearing in guest mixes from other artists, rSUN is indeed one of our favorites in the scene. What began over half a decade ago as a project heavily influenced by future bass sound design and bouncy trap rhythms has transformed into something distinctly heavier and more enigmatic. rSUN’s latest releases are a showcase of hard-hitting dubstep, ratchet flips, and in-your-face synths that we can’t get enough of. Dig in below to learn more about the evolution of his sound and what continues to inspire him in 2025!

We’re thrilled to have you with us today! What can we expect from this guest mix you’ve prepared for us?

This mix you can expect to hear some new songs I have in the works, songs off my EP, some unreleased music from some friends of mine, and other music I’ve been digging a whole lot. It’s a range of different styles of bass music you’d hear if you were to see me live.

Just last month you joined the Memory Palace crew, congratulations! How did that come to fruition?

Thanks! So last year I had sent some unreleased music of mine to Of The Trees because he’s played out a few of my tracks in the past so I just wanted him to have some new stuff of mine. He ended up liking a bunch of the tracks I sent over and asked if I’d be interested in releasing an EP on Memory Palace at some point. I didn’t really know when it would happen but I just started working on a bunch of songs I thought would fit his label. Near the end of the year I sent Of The Trees all the songs I had been working on and about 2 weeks later he tagged me in a post on X of him playing out Harmony. After that we started planning out the release of the EP and picked out all the songs we wanted on it.

Following-up that last question, what can you tell us about your newly released Entropy EP? What’s your personal favorite track?

So I wanted this EP to represent a specific sound in bass music that I’ve been honing in on. I’ve kinda been all over the place with my releases in the past and I knew if I was going to put out an EP I wanted it to represent what rSUN is in electronic music. It’s sort of like a launch point of what people can expect from my project moving forward. But my favorite track off the EP is probably Flow. Mainly because it’s a style of bass music I haven’t really made much of in the past.

I knew if I was going to put out an EP I wanted it to represent what rSUN is in electronic music.

When I first discovered you, your music had a very prominent future bass influence. You use a lot of colorful (for lack of a better word) synths that remind me of old tracks from, say, Just A Gent or DROELOE. The Entropy EP feels like a marked change from that early rSUN feel. What’s the inspiration behind pivoting towards a deeper, darker sound?

I gravitated away from that future bass sound mainly because I got bored of it and lost my inspiration. Artists like Ternion Sound, G Jones, Tiedye Ky, etc. have inspired me a ton with my switch over to that darker sound but I think it really just expanded my sound a little more. Recently I’ve been trying to mix the two sounds and I think you get that mix with my song ‘Harmony.’ So I’m working on doing more of that in the future.

I gravitated away from that future bass sound mainly because I got bored of it and lost my inspiration.

Were you a classically-trained musician, or did you teach yourself most of what you know?

My uncle taught me piano when I was younger but I didn’t retain much at the time. With producing though, I taught myself most of that alongside watching a lot of YouTube tutorials. My brother also got into producing the same time I did so we would share things that we learned every time we got together to make music.

How is the music scene where you’re from in Virginia? Did local shows help propel your career at all thus far, or is your success primarily from being noticed on the web?

I think being noticed on the web got me noticed the most but I’d say the music scene here in Richmond for electronic/bass music is growing. There’s a promotion company here known as Rhythm City Collective and I think they have really been pushing the scene along here. They do a really good job curating shows here.

What’s your DAW of choice? Any particular reasons why?

FL Studio! It’s the one I started with and I’m never gonna stop using it.

What is one thing you wish you knew about producing before you started?

Put Fruity Soft Clipper on the master channel.

Do you have special plans for 2025 that you’d like to spill the beans on?

All I can say is you might see me around the country a little more this year…

If you had the opportunity to perform for any venue, event, festival, etc. in the world, where would it be?

I think performing at Electric Forest would be so cool. I’ve never been but I’ve heard nothing but good things about it.

Tell us some slept-on artists that you’ve been digging lately.

There’s too many but to name a few: Rausch, WAYVE, Jistix, Vyhara, Knetica, Vexx, ANON, and Robu.

Any last words for our readers? A fun fact, an inspirational quote, a shout-out perhaps?

Honestly just wanna shout out and thank Of The Trees for supporting my music over the years and allowing me to release on Memory Palace.

It has been a hell of a year for Of the Trees and Barclay Crenshaw. With a new label to his name, Memory Palace Records, and a nationwide tour that has nearly wrapped up, Of the Trees has enjoyed massive success within the bass music circuit in 2023. Crenshaw, likewise, has recently opened himself up to a wider audience than his usual Dirtybird Campout crossover fans with his performances at Wakaan Festival in both 2022 and 2023 (the former of which is available on SoundCloud here), as well as an opening slot for Of the Trees at his recent Red Rocks headline performance. ‘Blue Mile’ is the cherry on top this year for these two producers. Featuring the majestic lyricism of UK grime legend Strategy – one who has notably had just as successful a year – this is a do-not-miss track from three heavyweight dons of the bass music scene.

A single repeating note opens the track before erupting into fast-paced drum beats that mirror the speed with which Strategy spits out bars. The rolling drumline gives way to an angelic empty space halfway through the track, reminiscent of deep 140 bpm classics from the likes of Coki, Benga, and Caspa. The moment Strategy goes silent is the best kind of sonic whiplash, the kind of moment that makes one audibly gasp “Whoa…” There’s hardly enough time to piece together the first verse of the track before he comes roaring back in for the second between the hypnotizing bassline and sharp hi-hats. It’s a simultaneously filthy and poetic end to this composition.

Everybody knows I’m a UK don / But I’m back on my Transatlantic shit
– Strategy

Strategy does not miss a beat on ‘Blue Mile.’ Amidst the murky low-end rumblings of Of the Trees and Crenshaw, syllable after syllable fires through like a machine gun. It’s clear that the grime wave has finally cemented itself stateside, with Strategy himself remarking that he’s “Got a decent amount of American followers.” In this case, they’re well-deserved.

‘Blue Mile’ is a standout track for Memory Palace. Along with the likes of LYNY, Esseks, DMVU, and Of the Trees himself, Crenshaw is a perfect fit for the vibe of the label. Having recently announced a hiatus next year from his usual Claude VonStroke alias, we can only wonder what label we’ll see him collaborating with next. Longtime fans are still awaiting a second Crenshaw album, given that the first came out nearly seven years ago. Whoever it is, they’re in for a treat. If 2023 has given us any indication of the trajectory of these two producers, it’s safe to say they’re only going up.
