It’s never a bad day when new Mr. Carmack appears on the SoundCloud feed.

Mr. Carmack hasn’t uploaded any new tracks to his SoundCloud page for nearly a full year now, so fans were caught off guard with the unannounced release of three new remixes this past week. The producer legend has been hard at work touring for much of this time, having most recently played at Destructo‘s Friendship 2024 (the festival presumably had something to do with the release of these tracks given its logo pasted in the cover art for each, but it’s unclear exactly how). In true Carmack fashion, the silent hard work in the studio suddenly comes to light with a completely unannounced drop of new music.

Southside and Lil’ Yachty get the remix treatment for the first track, ‘gimme da lite.’ The original, released at the end of last year, is what can only be described as quintessential trap music. This flip transforms it into a ghetto house-derived footwork banger. The broken beats and pitched-up vocals make this flip one for the footwork specialists in the club, a far cry from the trap arm-flailing mood of the original song.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1716748176″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

MR•CAR/\\ACK · gimme da lite (carmack remix)

Love Regenerator (an alias of Calvin Harris) and Steve Lacy (formerly a guitarist for The Internet and now a successful solo singer-songwriter) are up next with the ‘live without your love’ remix. The original is an ode to house music replete with acidy synths and Lacy’s sultry R&B-style vocals. Once again Carmack flips the vibe on its head here. A slow, undulating bassline pervades the entire song, interrupted occasionally only by the sound of police sirens and Lacy’s voice. As one commenter so eloquently put it, this is like Shades meets Mr. Carmack.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1716750516″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

MR•CAR/\\ACK · live without your love (carmack remix)

Carmack takes a step back in time for the third flip with a remix of Who Da Funk’s ‘Shiny Disco Balls,’ one of the top UK dance singles of 2002. Despite being an over 20 year-old track at this point, Carmack has found a way to breathe new life into it with what is arguably the standout track of these three new releases. By dropping nearly all of the instrumentation that established the original song as a eurohouse bop and leaving only the vocal sample, this flip is where Carmack’s production truly shines through. The 90s rave aesthetic of the vocals is quickly replaced after the first minute of the song when Carmack’s signature grungy bass kicks in. This is a flip that wouldn’t have felt out of place on DEMOLISH or the Red EP.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1716750954″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

MR•CAR/\\ACK · shiny disco balls (carmack remix)

The unforeseen release of these remixes feels like a bygone remnant of the cryptic drip-feeding of tunes that Carmack fans received in the mid-2010s golden era of SoundCloud. If this is at all indicative of a return to that time, a return to sporadic releases of top-tier tracks that might not be there the next day, then we should all welcome it with open arms. Keep an eye on your feeds, folks, because you never know what might pop up.

Welcome to the first volume of Bootleg Business, a brand-new FUXWITHIT original column, that celebrates the unsung art of unofficial remixes. Every month I’ll go back to back with a guest, showcasing a selection of our favorite edits, dubs, or whatever you want to call them. This will be a space free from the pressure to keep up with new music. Our guests will be free to dig into their libraries for long-forgotten gems as well as select the hit of the moment. Strictly unofficial.

For this pilot episode, we decided to kick things off in-house with a b2b between me and FUXWITHIT’s very own Colin aka classyvlassy. He’s a true basshead, so expect some trap bangers from his selection, alongside some hip hop and even drum&bass. From my side, I couldn’t resist selecting some well-known cuts but I believe you won’t be disappointed (the obscure stuff will come in the next episodes, trust me). Also, don’t worry, we don’t have any ‘Rumble’ edits.

Rude Boy (Klean Remix)

Hold on and read what I have to say before rage-quitting this article. I know this remix has almost half a million plays on SoundCloud alone and has been spammed all over the internet in the past week. But that’s exactly the reason why it’s here. It perfectly embodies the spirit of this column. Think about it: the most talked about moment of 2023’s Super Bowl (musically speaking) has been an unofficial edit uploaded by a Brazillian teenager on his SIDE ACCOUNT, with just a few thousand followers. Crazy, eh? I’ll say it one more time, unofficial creations keep the music world fresh and exciting. That’s why I wanted to open Bootleg Business with this track. It’s its manifesto.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1018139671″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

CLB – Bootlegs [002]

The title alone makes this a must for our selections. Chicago’s CLB is well known for his ability to give tracks he loves a darker and dirtier spin, and that’s just what he delivers on his second release of bootlegs. The 3-track offering sees CLB flipping tracks from Kunta Kinte, Skelecta x Distinkt, and Wiley Cat. The pack provides an insight into the sounds that influence the artist, shines a light on often-overlooked underground gems, and simply fucking bangs. Exploring the realms of 140 and grime, the icy bangers are built for dingy basements and beastly sound systems. Those looking to embrace the dark recesses of bass music will be delighted. Fans hoping for pop-friendly EDM bops will be frightened. Bootlegs [002] is yet another example of why we love CLB.

Dennis Ferrer – Hey Hey (camoufly Remix)

The first time I heard this remix I was languishing in a complete hangover after one of the many nights out during ADE. Once I heard the drop, I was reborn, ready for another party. This remix is a certified banger. It hits harder than a bottle of Jäger gulped down in one breath. When thinking about ‘Hey Hey’ I used to recall the sensual house vibes of the original or the hyperactive disco groove of the Riva Starr remix. Now all I can think about is me fighting for my life in a mosh-pit. Good job camoufly.

Fred again.. – Kammy (like i do) (So Dope Bootleg)

So Dope flexes his talents as a remixer with a unique flip of Fred again’s ‘Kammy (like i do).’ The fresh take embodies all of the emotion of the original while injecting a distinct level of knock. The original vocals tie the track together as So Dope adds in lush pads and beefed-up drums before exploring three unique drops. Moving from trap, to club and wave, this bootleg truly checks all of the boxes, making it primed to ring off at clubs without sacrificing any of the feels.

Polarkreis 18 – Allein, Alene feat. Nephew (Voliik remix)

Let’s go step by step. I’m a huge fan of Eric Prydz. His remix of ‘Allein Allein’ is one of my favorite tracks from him and it made me fall in love with these vocals. Voliik is one of the most fascinating and skilled producers I know. What could go wrong with the combination of all these elements? Voliik’s electro treatment is brutal and extreme as always, but it perfectly matches the adrenaline rush triggered by the vocals, in this version sung by the Danish band Nephew. Indeed, this is actually a remix of a rework of the original Polarkreis 18′ song. Confused? Read the SoundCloud description for the full, beautiful story behind this remix.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/829202374″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Lil Yachty – Poland (Formula & Nautika Bootleg)

I’ll admit that I’m a bit behind on this one. Released late last year, Formula & Nautika take Lil Yachty’s ‘Poland’ into the world of DnB. Let me start by saying this really shouldn’t be this good. That’s not a knock on Formula & Nautika’s talents because they prove them in stripes. It’s just rare that a DnB flip of a SoundCloud rap hit sounds this well crafted. Yachty’s addictive and simplistic vocals make it feel instantly familiar but the way they’re bent and stretched creates melodic layers that are damn near spiritual. The drops hit with maximum impact while still remaining infectious and uplifting. This song is simply too much fun. Don’t blame me if this is stuck on repeat for the foreseeable future.

Mr. Carmack – lean on rmx (1great dane totally helped too)

Here’s another widely popular, or I should probably say iconic, remix. I’ve been sharing this version of ‘Lean On’ left and right for six years now, it would simply be a crime to not include it in Bootleg Business. Long life to Carmack (and Great Dane too) for this gem and for that album full of random beats he dropped in 2017.

PRYZMS – TALES FROM THE DIRTY SOUTH RE:MIXTAPE

What happens when you flip Atlanta rap classics into hard-hitting bass cuts? ATL native PRYZMS decided to find out and we couldn’t be more grateful for it. Leaning into his early influences, TALES FROM THE DIRTY SOUTH RE:MIXTAPE is a love letter to the iconic sounds of his city that also show off his undeniable skills. Blistering trap and bass is elevated by vocal samples from rap staples that include ‘In The A,’ ‘Kryptonite,’ ‘Dirty South,’ ‘ATLiens’ and more. This is untapped SoundCloud gold that’s ripe for mining. Bask in the sonic riches.

SOOHAN – Missy Tribute

“A supercut of Missy Elliot’s hardest lines running atop a selection of Timbaland’s best cuts.” This is how SOOHAN himself described this cut, and to be honest, it’s pretty self explicative. There’s nothing much to add about the song (it slaps!) but I can’t stress you enough to check SOOHAN’s full discography. He’s a remix wizard and sample genius. On top of that, he doesn’t limit himself to pop remixes but he mainly incorporates and explores sounds from all over the world. His SoundCloud profile is a true encyclopedia.

Skrillex – Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites (Fabian Mazur Remix)

With the recent release of not one, but two new Skrillex albums, it’s probably safe to say you’ve been inundated with Skrillex remixes as of late. So why not lean into it with a fresh approach? Rather than taking on ‘Rumble’ or one of the iconic producer’s recent releases, Fabian Mazur has instead opted to take on Sonny’s all-time classic ‘Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites.’ With the original now well over a decade old, a fresh flip actually feels like a unique take. Fabian Mazur leverages the vocals and signatures from OG while completely flipping it on its head for a trapped-out twist that’s primed for the FUXWITHIT audience. Flipping a classic is always a difficult task, but Fabian Mazur always rises to the challenges ahead of him.

Mr. Carmack is back and he’s bringing the vibes. Just over a month after releasing his heavy-hitting CHAOS EP, the veteran beatmaker blesses fans with the four-track HOMETOWN HEROES EP. ‘GOD (MUSIC)’ sets the bar high from the outset. The Dilip-assisted heater is the perfect blend of cinematic, epic, and banging. The first half balances gritty trap vibes, punchy bass, and angelic vocals, while the latter portion is a breezy sunfilled groove. Connecting with AbJo & antonioiswho comes FORTALEZA a laidback baile bop that’s anchored by the cool keys and upbeat percussion. The title track serves as a rap anthem with Jordan Dennis sliding into the spotlight and stealing the show with smooth and swag-packed bars. The backing is summery and dancey providing the perfect canvas for the emcee. Closing things out comes ‘PARANA’ a trippy off-kilter bop that’ll put you in a trance and have you moving. The elements are dark and heavy while somehow remaining inviting and approachable.

HOMETOWN HEROES is yet another reminder as to why Mr. Carmack is one of the best out. Listen below.

Mr. Carmack has kept himself pretty isolated this year in terms of releasing music. The renowned beatmaker has still been active, hopping on twitch for his own streams and performing sets on others, like Ivy Lab’s weekly show, but after he dumped so much music on us last year, it’s understandable he’s needed some time in the studio. Carmack is back with a remix of Anderson .Paak’s ‘Bubblin’ and we really hope it’s the sign of the start of Carmack Season.

‘Bubblin’ begins with spacious pads that lead into Anderson .Paak’s vocals and a Carmack beat filled with little melodic plucks, strange synth shots, and hi-hats that are ever present. The track has that Carmack signature that we’ve missed this year; complete style with ease and simplicity as the ultimate sophistication. When Busta Rhymes makes an appearance it’s all the energy the beat needs to feel complete. This isn’t the first time Carmack and Anderson .Paak on a track, and we hope to see more of in the future.

Over two years after the first installment and just weeks after earth-shattering remixes from the likes of EPROM and Tsuruda, Project Paradis has returned with a hint of the madness to come. Slated to be unleashed on Mad Decent on March 27th, each of the 6 tracks across the EP are set to incarnate the untamable styles of both Promnite and Mr. Carmack. The project transcends traditional releases through multiple visual accompaniments (courtesy of SHINOSM) such as the mind-bending video for the two teaser tracks released today; ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ (shown below) and ‘Cut 11‘. Exploring psychological bonds between the prisoner and captor, ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ smashes the barriers of physical and digital existence with an astronomical wall of sound.

Stretching texturized, artificial noises across turbulent interpretations of trap, experimental bass, house, grime, and more, Paradis 2 encapsulates the rowdiest ideas from the two madmen into a novel dystopian vision. Among the other disruptive tracks on Paradis 2, the long awaited ‘Bull Run’ is slated to make its massive debut on streaming services. Teased in this Carmack tweet and in countless Reddit threads, the monstrous, elusive track has been wreaking absolute havoc in sets from heavy-hitting DJ for years.

Producer. Innovator. Musician. The soul of the party. A builder, a tastemaker, and a pioneer. Turn up and cool down. With the wisdom of someone far beyond his age, Aaron Carmack does it all. He’s authored some of the most influential music ever posted online and continues to blaze a new trail.

Sitting on the green room stairs of Denver’s Bluebird Theater, we briefly caught up with the don himself. The 29 year-old SF-raised, LA-based Hawaiian has this incessant, tranquil focus about him. You can’t really tell what he’s thinking, but you can certainly feel the passion for which he directs his attention.

Aaron has been on quite the journey since he first started releasing music from his college in Long Beach, CA nearly a decade ago.

[I had] much less money. Much less. I was flat broke in 2010. Flat fucking broke. I was just failing out of college. I was selling my clothes for weed. I was promoting club shows for free. I was just living like a dummy. But I had a lot of good friends take care of me.

Having crafted a larger than life discography, spun at some of the largest music festivals in the world, inspired an entire generation of producers and won over the hearts of countless listeners, it’s safe to say Aaron has come a long way. And now?

“Still broke. A little less broke. Now we’re traveling. I’ve flown a million miles. This is the third band I’ve had in three years. Writing music in more ways than I could ever imagine and living off of it.”

With more timeless anthems under his belt than we can count, Aaron has surpassed the level of influence that most musicians will ever reach. Carmack established a formidable legacy from a decade of genre-defining uploads that span from easy going classics like ‘Old Beat’, ‘Humbled’, ‘CHOWFUN X LAURYN HILL’, ‘Brazllian Blowjob’, and ‘Free Baby’, to zealous bangers like his ‘Aerosol Can’, ‘DNA’, and ‘Charge’ remixes, ‘Kick It Up’, ‘Roller (New Look)’, ‘Drugs’, and the infamous ‘Pay For What’. The dude has more hits than we could even begin to cite, and after relinquishing over fifty tracks this year, 2019 witnessed an unfathomable addition to this pot. He destroyed our ears with his DEMOLISH EP, revived us with the hard hitting REBUILD EP, and dropped an experimental collection of songs intelligently paired with human chromosomes.

“I’ve always had the concept… I wanted to kind of use it as a way to learn something about it. I’ve always been interested in the way DNA works. The task was to find out a specific function for each of the chromosomes and apply a certain song I’d written to each one.”

Tastefully paired with a collection of art from the talented Ethan Schanberger, this project explores a more colorful side of Carmack’s production style. Ranging from house music to jazz and sprinkling hints of his signature future beats style, these tracks added a wonderful flavor to the endless chain of Aaron’s recent works. Although we noticed #19 and #21 are missing…

“That project was overshadowed by all the stuff we’re working on now… We had to stop the project short to start recording the album”

Following the release of two phenomenal EPs and nearly 30 singles, Mr. Carmack fully opened the flood gates by delivering his first cohesive, full-length vocal album titled VIISTA. Proudly showcasing the sweeping extent of his musical prowess, VIISTA registers a contemporary chapter of the ever-growing musician’s discography. Immersing listeners (cough Immersion Tour cough) into a new neighborhood of the Carmack sound, this project broke from familiar ground into palpable, uncharted territory.

“I’m trying to move more stuff in that direction. I want Carmack to be more in that direction anyway. Carmack’s my name. I can’t have myself be held to one kind of sound just because it’s under my name. I can alias it. I can still keep Mr. Carmack as my DJ stuff too, turn up shit, because I mean, obviously I love that shit. I wouldn’t be here right now if I didn’t love that.”

In the modern ever-shifting musical landscape, breaking away from a brand that’s been sculpted over years of releases can be a risky move. It’s a pressure that even one of the most well-respected and musically diverse artists in the game is conscious of.

I actually have an alias on Spotify, but I’m not gonna tell you what it is.

That sentence sent gave me goosebumps. Imagine all the tracks that artists make for themselves and don’t want glued to their name – let alone all the Carmack beats that have never seen the light of day! He didn’t share much, but we do know this:

“There’s music on it. I put out a track a week.”

Needless to say, the man has been busy.

“The chromosome idea was two months ago. I’ve been working with this dude (Ian) for six months.”

Ian Roller is a large reason VIISTA and this past Immersion Tour was made possible. Having met Aaron nearly two years ago, Ian helped bring the album to life by laying down some creamy smooth saxophone lines (along with a few other wind instruments) and arranging the project for a live orchestra.

Ian: “We did 17 piece arrangements with 5 saxes, clarinets, 4 trombones, 3 trumpets, guitar & keys, bass, drums, and Aaron on vocals, keys and trumpet. We reduced it to a 7-piece to make it more feasible. We can’t do a cross country tour with a 17 piece band. You can’t just go from a DJ thing to that.”

Mr. Carmack: “Yea you can. We just did it! (laughs)”

Ian: “Right, we just did it! But not for 10 shows of big band. So we have a 7 piece band, but they each have their own character.”

FUXWITHIT: “Are they coming back for any more shows?”

Mr. Carmack: “We got a whole new band. New York is kind of a lesson in professionalism. We hired a band before we’d even heard them play. In New York, they’ve had the music for a couple weeks so when we get to NY, we’re gonna have one rehearsal.”

As hectic as this might sound, it’s just another day in the life of Mr. Carmack. The forward thinker has always played by his own rules, especially when it comes to uploading music.

SoundCloud era brought actual, real amateur music to the front. And that made everyone scared because no one can control it. And that was why it worked on SoundCloud – because no one was controlling it. Anybody could upload, anybody could comment, anybody could do anything.

This struck a chord. Audius, a new SoundCloud competitor built on P2P blockchain technology champions the fact that, “Your artist profile can never be ‘deplatformed’, and your tracks can never be censored or removed.” Aaron was also one of the premiere artists during the launch of this promising disruptor.

Mr. Carmack: “A buddy of mine was a huge supporter & proponent of Audius, so I’m in it. How do you guys like Audius?”

FUXWITHIT: “So far so good”

Mr. Carmack: “I don’t really use streaming platforms anymore, per se. I don’t really use web based platforms. I just don’t know anymore.”

FUXWITHIT: “Where do you usually listen?”

Mr. Carmack: “My favorite thing now is finding old shit… New music not so much. I’ll hear new music as they come ’cause I have so many friends that, you know, are about that kinda shit. I don’t really feel like I need to be active like I quite used to be.”

Ian: “It kinda comes to you?”

Mr. Carmack: “Yeah. I just don’t dig as much as I used to. I’d love to. I think the spirit of digging comes and goes, you know? I wasn’t really a Gilles Peterson or Anthony Balthez, or like, a Zane Lowe or a Joe Kay, where digging is part of your art form. Where digging is part of your moniker, your charge. That’s your duty, to dig.”

Ian: “It seems like yours is more just like, creating.”

Mr. Carmack: “Ehh I dig when I want to. If I need new shit I’ll go find some.”

Ian has been at the forefront of the album since its inception, and carries a unique insight into the mind of Aaron Carmack.

“It’s hard to describe him with genres… I would just call it genuine. He really wanted to put together a record that showcased what he enjoys in live music, that feels good, and will bring good feelings to other people. It’s just a genuine record from a genuine dude.”

Carmack has given the world something he’s always dreamed of; weaving together a groundbreaking album while maintaining his artistic integrity.

“This is just something he wanted. He was like ‘This is separate from the tour dates, this is separate from everything else. I’m hiring you to do this because I want this. Because this matters to me. Because I want to hold my music in my hands. These charts matter to me.’ He said to me, ‘I’m tired of spending so much money on lighting rigs. I wanna spend that money hiring musicians to come and play my music with me.’ And I fucking will not ever forget that, you know? Because that means so much. “

It warms our hearts to see the legend continue to manifest his dreams. We can’t wait to see what else the future holds for Aaron Carmack.

The producer has helped to redefine the sounds of trap and bass over the past several years with hundreds of incredible tracks and he’s always cooking up something fresh. Proving his artistry is ever-evolving comes his new album VIISTA. Trap heads be forewarned, this isn’t a collection of bangers set to slaughter DJ sets, this is a project lush with vibes and rich in emotion. Carmack’s production mastery is on display but it also sees him exploring a new side, this time as a vocalist. The project fuses elements of R&B, jazz, and hip-hop for a laid-back and emotive soundscape. Early standouts include ‘All These Flags,’ ‘I Still Fuck With You’ and ‘Stairwell of my High School’. Listen to this one with an open mind and marvel at the diversity of Carmack’s artistic offering.

Mr. Carmack is one of a kind. There’s really no other words to describe how much of an influence the San Fransico beat-maker has had on the electronic music scene. From his unique productions, to his memorizing live sets and shows, it’s difficult to name another artist that has accomplished so much, and has been driving forward-thinking projects like Aaron Carmack. Having recently released two new EP’s (Demolish & Rebuild), most producers would take a break. But Carmack goes ahead and drops two new tracks on us even though we’re barely getting over his Rebuild project.

‘Healing’ might be recognizable to long-term fans of Aaron, like myself. Having previewed this in his Queen of Hearts mix, ‘Healing’ has been in the works for more than 4 years. Carmack has gone back and reworked the sound design in this track, adding extra percussion and vocals that didn’t exist before. ‘Healing’ is a brilliantly moving track, making the listener reminisce about old times and better days.

Carmack also released ‘REMEMBER TO REMEMBER’ which begins with a dreamy melody and introspective atmosphere that turns into a simplistic, yet heavy hitting trap beat that is focused around Carmack’s unique style and sound design. It’s a low-key banger that classic Carmack fans will absolutely love.

Be sure to check out both tracks below. As if this wasn’t enough, Carmack also announced his album will be dropping in November. Get ready.

“Sometimes you gotta take some personal time to rebuild.”

Legends have emerged throughout 2019 to engulf fans with endless streams of nostalgia and innovation. Mr. Carmack is no exception, having dropped the DEMOLISH EP, the I <3 Trap EP and a handful of singles to mark his return. Today, the icon is back with another massive project titled REBUILD, which likely serves as a follow up to his first full work from earlier this year.

Truly Mr. Carmack at his finest, the REBUILD EP is a set of seven tracks that display the talented producer’s endless range within styles without escaping his signature trap flair that he has developed over the years. The opener, ‘THINGS I CANNOT TELL YOU TO YOUR FACE,’ may be the best exemplification of this statement, as a multitude of melodic layers contrast a rugged trap undertone to get listeners hooked from the get-go. Softer pieces such as ‘Midnight’ with Kenny Segal and ‘For Billy’ hit you right in the feels with melancholic melodies, while ‘CARTIER’ alongside Great Dane and ‘Hmm’ with Goodnight Cody are gritty heaters that are perfect for experimental bass lovers.

All tied together through different styles, the REBUILD EP is yet another reminder of why Mr. Carmack is considered one of the best. Don’t miss it below.
