After years working behind the scenes with some of the biggest artists in the game including Flume, Skrillex and Marshmello, 2020 has allowed Naderi to truly come into his own as an artist. He’s been dropping massive flips for some time, but with the release of the HOTBOX EP in October he truly showcased the depth of his immense talent. The 6 track offering spans a myriad of genres and sounds ranging from spacey future bass, raw trap, vibey future R&B, D&B, sultry house and everything in between. Diverse while remaining cohesive, the project showed us everything Naderi has to offer. With his breakout year drawing close to an end, we felt it only right to end it with a proper bang: a guest mix + interview us! The mix brings the energy and feels, balancing both for a high speed half hour that’ll transport you to the club in Sydney. As for the interview, we discuss what to expect from his live sets, his debut EP, collaborating with friends, slowing down time and much more.

Where are you taking us with this mix? Set the mood for the listeners.

I first started DJ’ing in a club called Chinese Laundry in Sydney and there is a certain energy that the main room begs for you to play and I just wanted to capture a 2021 version of that energy in this mix.

I wanted to flirt with the slightly darker side of sounds that I like. I don’t necessarily mean heavier sounds, but sounds that are definitely cooler and edgier overall.

Is the mix a good preview for what a Naderi live set/tour will be like in the future?

I play a bit more fun and party than this usually, but if I did a gig somewhere I’m familiar with and know the crowd are down to follow me into the rabbit hole it would end up something like this!

HOTBOX was a way for me to stand on my own two feet and also change the conversation about who I am, not just a producer but as an artist.

You recently dropped your debut EP Hotbox, congratulations on the release. What was the process like putting it together? What does the body of work represent to you?

HOTBOX was a way for me to stand on my own two feet and also change the conversation about who I am, not just a producer but as an artist.

The whole idea started with wanting to put a few cool songs out, but it evolved into an audio visual experience that I poured myself into and it’s made some waves which I’m riding!

The project moves between a wide range of genres, from house to future bass, DnB, trap and more. Did you consciously want to showcase your diversity or do you just get bored staying within one genre?

I wanted to break stereotypes and take risks. I don’t wanna ever play it safe.

I always freaked out over the fact that I was into making so many different types of music and instead of running from it, I now embrace that side of me.

I’ve got a bunch of side projects over the last year, I’ve made some hardcore skater punk, some serious rap music and another rock-based project. That’s just me.

You mentioned in our previous interview that collaborator Reo Cragun is a friend. How important is chemistry and establishing a relationship when collaborating with vocalists and other producers?

For me to really gel with a singer, I put myself out there and just let myself be vulnerable, and if they reciprocate, we can make serious magic because we trust each other and aren’t hiding behind ego or some industry image shit.

Just be yourself, if they fuck with you they do and if they don’t that’s cool, you know it wasn’t meant to be. I used to get hung up on that, now it makes me appreciate the tight homies even more.

If it’s your first time working with an artist do you have any tricks to help create that chemistry or connection?

Just be yourself, if they fuck with you they do and if they don’t that’s cool, you know it wasn’t meant to be. I used to get hung up on that, now it makes me appreciate the tight homies even more.

How important is melody within your work? What makes a great melody?

Melodies and words are what people remember about music more than anything especially long after they have forgotten how dope your kick drum sounded etc.. A great melody to me is one where, say you’re at a bar with your mates drinking and one of you says “hey you know that song that goes like..doo do dooo doo” and they straight away get it. All my melodies remind me of something from my past that I can’t ever pinpoint, some kind of nostalgia.

How do you keep producing fun?

Trying new stuff out and experimenting. All my best songs come from being a mad scientist in the studio and trying things with no expectations other than “hey I wonder what happens if I do…THIS!”

Often it’s the music I love more than the ones that I wrote where I was being deliberate.

Cooking, food, music and production have a LOT in common in terms of balance between artistry and craft.

You mentioned that time stops when you take your dog to the dog park that used to be a cemetery. Are there any other areas of your life where you experience this sensation? Is it a feeling you long for?

I feel time slows down when I’m eating a meal with friends. Cooking, food, music and production have a LOT in common in terms of balance between artistry and craft.

Back in October you tweeted you were “working on something really cool to help the Australian music scene.” Can you tell us a little bit about what you have coming?

I’m working on a small platform for Australian artists, it’s still under wraps and it’s something I’m in the middle of right now and hoping to get off the ground in 2021.

I was terrified of putting music out last year. I’m not sure why! But that version of me doesn’t exist anymore… Now I feel that the only person I need to impress is myself and my fans…and my dog.

You’ve said it’s important not to compare yourself to others but rather focus on improving on the previous version of yourself. How would you compare yourself now to last year? Have there been any specific areas where you’ve seen notable growth?

I was terrified of putting music out last year. I’m not sure why! But that version of me doesn’t exist anymore.

I’ve also stopped looking to others for validation. Before I would get excited if a bigger artist would fuck with my work, but still have a lot of self-doubt over the fact that I work with so many huge artists and whether or not my own music is as good as theirs. Now I feel that the only person I need to impress is myself and my fans…and my dog.

What should we expect from you in the future?

I spent a long time making an amazing Splice sample pack which comes out real soon. It’s really some of the best samples I’ve made and I use them in literally everything.

I’m also working on my second EP right now which will continue the story I was telling in the first EP and sonically leans into a more festival-friendly side of music that I love!

It’s hard to believe that, despite being around for years working with some of the biggest names in the game, Naderi has yet to release an original body of work that he can call his own. That is ready to change very soon though, as the HOTBOX EP is set to bless our ears tomorrow. With the flute-driven trap banger ‘HOTBOXINDAWIP‘ and the softer ‘Stardust‘ featuring vocals from Reo Cragun released as the first two singles from the project, Naderi has set the stage for all to disregard genre expectations while still expecting quality production all around.

Before the six-track HOTBOX EP comes to light tomorrow via Lowly., we have the extreme pleasure of premiering ‘STAY,’ a genre-defying track that showcases Naderi at his finest. The introduction is serene and peaceful, instilling a sense of tranquility and ease in listeners. Shimmering effects and a soft vocal sample are gradually added into the mix, before more intensity appears in the form of upbeat synths and crisp percussion. As the minute-mark hits, the essence of the track is flipped on its head, with Naderi driving a drum and bass inspired tempo layered with a future bass soundscape. ‘STAY’ is complex in its production yet easy to groove along to, a true testament to the Sydney-based artist’s ingenuity.

Don’t miss the HOTBOX EP out tomorrow, and until then, dive into ‘STAY’ below!

Reo Cragun is no stranger to working with elite producers, having provided top-lines for the likes of Flume, Ekali, Pham and many more, and his connection with Naderi is fitting and natural. Since then, the Sydney-based artist has grown into his original sound with a variety of hard-hitting singles, paving the way for his debut EP out later this year.

Ahead of the release of the full project, Naderi has unleashed its first single, a brief yet punchy track titled ‘HOTBOXINDAWIP.’ About the single, Naderi states, “if you’ve been missing some of that melodic Australian bass and trap, this is for you,” and we couldn’t have said it better. ‘HOTBOXINDAWIP’ is a minimal trap heater highlighted by a repeated flute-like melody, a menacing sub bass, and crisp percussion throughout. Quick to the punch, Naderi’s latest is tailored to the FUXWITHIT audience, so don’t miss it below.

Hailing from Sydney, Australia the producer and engineer has worked with some of the biggest artists in electronic music from Flume to Skrillex, Marshmello and more. Launching his artist project a few years back, he made a name for himself with an impressive official remix for Keys N Krates. With his remixes of Skrillex and Flume combining for nearly 5 million plays on SoundCloud alone, it’s safe to say he’s been making some noise.

2019 saw Naderi unleashing his first original ‘Too Much Smoke’ alongside Lil Traffic. Combining rap, heavy-hitting trap and future feels, the track showcased the perfect fusion of what Naderi has to offer. Most recently, he collaborated with Vincent for the massive banger ‘Wasted Time.’ With a promising 2020 on the horizon, we caught up with Naderi to learn more about him, his music and his plans for the future. Get familiar below.

What’s your favourite thing about Australia?

I love being outdoors whenever I get a chance and there’s no city blessed for that the way Sydney is. It’s just so beautiful but there’s also this super crazy futuristic vibe that Sydney is starting to get due to the melting pot of cultures that are thriving here.

I also love that nobody here gives a shit who you are, what you do and who you work with. They’re only interested in whether or not you’re a good person to be around.

Who is the most interesting artist you’ve worked with and why? What makes them special?

I’ve been crazy lucky that I get to work with some insane artists and at a certain point it’s like “I GET IT…you’re all fucking gifted!” haha but I really really love working with my friends Reo Cragun, Pauline Herr and Leotrix because we all just write so much good music together and there’s absolutely zero ego involved. We just want to make amazing songs.

I won’t lie, I had a couple of crazy opportunities over the last year or so to work with Skrillex and Marshmello so I took them. I’m glad I did because I learned so much shit…

How difficult has it been getting your own artist project off the ground?

There’s so many people that are supporting my crazy ideas that it makes me want to cry. I still have to go through the same challenges as every other artist though. My aim is to take over the world, one fan at a time, one song at a time, one melody at a time.

Your release schedule has been pretty sparse in 2019, have you been working on something big or does it just take you a longer time to create originals?

I won’t lie, I had a couple of crazy opportunities over the last year or so to work with Skrillex and Marshmello so I took them. I’m glad I did because I learned so much shit and made a tonne of amazing genuine friends through their teams.

Then there was this huge pressure to release music that met a certain criteria or standard because I’m friends with all these amazingly talented artists. In my head I felt like nothing I did was ever good enough (even though everyone around me told me it’s amazing etc.) I realised that I was comparing the beginning of my journey to the fully matured part of their journeys.

I then stopped hitting social media as much and just got busy with what I do best and that’s writing music.

If 2019 was the drought, 2020 will be the flood.

What are your release plans looking like for the next few months and into next year?

If 2019 was the drought, 2020 will be the flood.

You met with SoundCloud’s VP Jeff Ponchick fairly recently. What did you discuss? What’s your personal outlook on the platform?

Jeff is so smart that I feel dumb just being in the same room as him.

The discussions we are having aren’t just about fixing some software. Their platform has been responsible for a shift in culture and changing culture is what I’m interested in mainly.

Where they were, where they are now and their future are totally different things. There’s still thousands of artists getting noticed because of SoundCloud and every year there’s millions of new fans who are yet to discover music and I think they’re the people who they should focus on.

What do you do when you need a break from music?

I take my dog to the dog park. There’s this amazing dog park near my house which used to be a cemetery in the early 1900s but is now a dog park with tombstones. It sounds macabre but it’s a really beautiful peaceful place and for me, time stops whenever I go there.

What’s your favorite way to get high?

When I’m in California, I love to try all the different types of cannabis they have there. It’s still illegal in Australia so everyone in legal USA states is very lucky.

I also hit the gym everyday before studio sessions now and it’s changed how free I am with my music.

… I’m here to change the world with my own music now.

Do you ever get tired of being associated with Flume in the media?

I’m grateful for everything and any love I get from the media is amazing, but I’m here to change the world with my own music now.

Can you leave our readers with one piece of life advice?

Don’t compare yourself to others. Compare yourself with your yesterday version and try and improve on that.

Giving the track some momentum into Fall, the Toronto trio have recruited Stand Tall Fists Up (STFU), Wuki & Naderi for official remixes. Wuki kicks things off with the energy and oddness that only he can bring. An ominous synth loop leads into a bent-up build that drops into a fun house festival sound that is at times perplexing but undeniably enjoyable. Next up, Australian producer Naderi gives the track an ethereal future bass feel that’s downbeat yet triumphant. Saving the best for last, Stand Tall Fists Up come through with a rework that’s slowed up, bouncy and packed with deep bass.
