While we wait for Drake’s fourth album (Views from the 6), the Toronto native dropped a short film that shows his return to Toronto. ‘Jungle’ shows an overwhelmed Drake reminiscing on the past while he links up with his OVO camp back in T.O. Full of self captured video and views from the 6 (see what i did there? ha!) it seems as if Drake returning to Toronto in this short film is some insight to the upcoming album. No word on that mixtape yet, but there is a quick snippet of some new music halfway through and close to the end of the flick. Check it out in its entirety below.

Making this list wasn’t easy. Although there are probably hundreds of remixes out there, you have to weed your way through twice the amount of covers and reposts of his originals to find them. Which bring us to the reason we made this list: Drake is arguably the most popular and influential rapper today. Whether it’s a new artist he has signed, his role as Ambassador to Toronto’s NBA team, or his OVO Festival in Toronto, it’s hard to go a day without hearing his name. No wonder there are so many remixes out there.

After a week of digging through SoundCloud, we’ve compiled our favourite Drizzy reworks into one, album-like playlist. We’ve got every genre here, from Deep House, to Trap, to Jersey club. We go from 0 to 100 and then back again. Enjoy.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/62386304″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]

This Loston Remix of ‘November 18th’ is no longer on SoundCloud so it couldn’t be included in the playlist but it is simply too good to leave out. Listen below.

Keeping the latter in mind, the OVO boss decided to take to SoundCloud once again today to drop 3 tracks: two brand new tunes ‘6 God’ and ‘Heat of Moment’ and the recently leaked ‘How About Now’. If three new Drake tracks wasn’t enough to get you excited all three are also free downloads. ‘6 God’ features bass heavy production from Boi-1da & Syk Sense. The track sees Drizzy dropping braggadocios bars like “I’m bout to hit you with the work boy , I hate comin’ through and stuntin’ on niggas that I know, aww that’s the worst boy, WORST”. ‘Heat of The Moment’ is a much slower 40 produced R&B tune that is straight singing. “All the school kids are so sick of books and learning, they don’t read anymore, they don’t even read anymore, they just want to be, like all the rappers I can’t stand, niggas we don’t need anymore”. Peep the tracks and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Jodeci back! This past weekend Drake and his October’s Very Own crew hosted the Fifth Annual OVO Fest. As per usual, there were a slew of guest appearances on Day 2 with the legendary duo Outkast, headlining a historic Day 1. For this week’s Throwback Thursday we’re bringing back one of the hottest tracks from last summer. Prior to dropping Nothing Was The Same, Drake dropped buzzworthy singles that wouldn’t appear on the project. The “Jodeci Freestyle” featuring Cole was easily the best (runner up: 5 AM in Toronto). Both Drake and Cole bring dope bars, and if you didn’t know, a few bars got Cole into a little bit of heat for a quick minute. Nonetheless, the joint features a cool beat with a distinct bass line that is perfect for the summer. And in case you missed it, you can peep it below.

“hold your applause, who needs a poker face when you jokers show me your cards?” – J.Cole

Summer mine. Drake’s homie from Steel City (Hamilton, ON) OB OBRIEN comes through and drops two new joints. He dropped Steve Nash back in January and that track was pretty dope (check it out here in case you missed it). No clue as to what project these tracks are tied to or if they’re just freebies that are meant to rattle in your car during the summer. Either way, they will do exactly that. Both joints are dope. The first, 2 On/Thotful is a remix of the Tinashe and ScHoolboy Q track produced by the dude who’s been dominating the boards for the past 6 months, DJ Mustard. This track also features Drake. Both OB and Drizzy drop some dope ass bars. The next, Hazelton Trump has an undeniable bounce and has the TOPSZN General boasting about his adventures with women.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been five years since the release of Drake’s third official mixtape, So Far Gone. Originally released on February 13, 2009 the mixtape was the catalyst for Drake rise to superstardom. It also marked the first full project that the now famous duo: Drake and Noah “40” Shebib worked on together. Consequently So Far Gone had Drake finding his signature sound, fusing singing and rapping perfectly, over minimalistic banging beats.

The mixtape was the first indicator of Drake’s ability to make a cohesive, fluent project. Though Room for Improvement and Comeback Season were solid efforts, they felt more like a collection of songs then an album. So Far Gone felt like an album… a really good album. “Dropped a mixtape, that shit sounded like an album”. The way that ‘Lust for Life’ flows into ‘Houstatlantavegas‘ seamlessly, leaves no question as to whether or not these tracks were meant to be played back-to-back and this carries throughout. Anyone who has listened to the mixtape from front to back is hard pressed to listen to the tracks individually. It just doesn’t have the same vibe.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmSFP3veWyc&w=516&h=315]

So Far Gone is also where Drake really finds himself lyrically. On ‘Successful’ Drake spits, “The game need change and I’m the motherfuckin’ cashier/ Nickels for my thoughts, dimes in my bed/ Quarters of the kush shape the lines in my head”. Even haters need to admit that that’s some nice wordplay. On ‘Say What’s Real’ he spits, “Future said, Since this Ye shit you better kill/ and I think this got that making of a legend feel”. He didn’t let Future down and couldn’t have been more correct. In a recent interview 40 spoke on how his verse on ‘Say What’s Real’ served as the foundation for the sound of the entire mixtape.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDpFBSDr-yg&w=516&h=315]

It’s almost impossible to discuss So Far Gone and not mention the breakout hit ‘Best I Ever Had’. The poppy love song took over the radio and went from a mixtape cut to a #2 Billboard Top 100 smash. It also features one our favourite Drake lines of all time, “When my album drop bitches will buy it for the picture/ And niggas will buy it too and claim they got it for they sister”. Even then Drake knew he had a ton of haters and closet fans. But he wasn’t mad at it, he embraced it. Essentially telling them you can hate my image, but you can’t deny the quality of my music. The success of the single led Drake to release the So Far Gone EP in September 2009, which went Gold in the summer of 2010.

Musically, So Far Gone introduced the world to the signature OVO Sound. Low Tom drums, clear snares, distorted guitar riffs and muffled bass lines all produced, mixed and mastered by 40, set the tone for Drake’s future projects. This sound would go on to influence a number of other artists and producers alike. Drake’s So Far Gone also featured him singing and rapping over other artists tracks. It was the first true demonstration of Drake’s ability to mix rapping and singing seamlessly. Looking back, the selection of tracks to sing on seems very calculated and incredibly smart. We got a taste of some really dope R&B with tracks like ‘A Night Off’ and ‘Brand New’. Then there are the uppity pop tunes like ‘Little Bit’ and ‘Let’s Call It Off’. It’s tracks like these where listeners were exposed to his singing and in turn were prepared for tracks like ‘Shut It Down’, ‘Doing it Wrong’ and the smash hit you’ll be hearing at every wedding this year, ‘Hold On We’re Going Home’.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCWyR436n1Q&w=516&h=315]

On ‘The Calm’ Drake raps, “Leader of the new school, it’s proven and it’s known/ I’m sittin’ in a chair but in the future it’s a throne.” And over the past 5 years he’s realized just that. Drake has risen from up-and-coming Toronto mixtape rapper to a rap Kingpin. Since it’s release, Drake has received 18 Grammy nominations (Winning Best Rap Album for Take Care), Won 4 Juno’s, became the Global Ambassador for the Toronto Raptors, and surpassed Jay-Z’s record for most number one singles (10 total) on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Chart.

In light of all his success Drake exhibits no signs of slowing down. As an artist or a business man. Drake is making it clear that he is working hard to become the next Jay-Z and So Far Gone was his Reasonable Doubt. Happy Anniversary to So Far Gone. I’m sure we’ll be bumpin’ it in another 5 years.
