Since emerging from the depths of the underground, PEEKABOO has become one of bass music’s most sought-after artists. From coveted festival slots to massive collaborations, it’s safe to say that the Detroit-based producer has reached the masses with his experimental bass sound that continues to captivate. With not one, but two collaborations with Skrillex this year, to a handful of singles leading up to today’s release of his debut album Eyes Wide Open, the artist who took the bass scene by storm with ‘Maniac’ and ‘Babatunde’ is consistently showing that he’s no one-hit wonder. And now, it’s time to dive into the next chapter of PEEKABOO.

Eyes Wide Open is PEEKABOO at his finest. From the monstrous ‘BADDERS‘ with Skrillex, G-Rex and Flowdan kicking off the project, to other collaborations with Zeds Dead, LYNY and Grabbitz, PEEKABOO showcases an undeniable chemistry with all of his fellow collaborators. In his solo tracks, the artist furthers the underground sound that he has championed over the last few years, while simultaneously pushing it to new depths. Take ‘Sleepwalk’ for example; it’s a track that carries a minimal bass swagger from start to finish, bouncing between cool fills and crisp percussion. In other cuts such as ‘I’ve Been Thinkin’ and ‘Don’t Wanna,’ the artist demonstrates his ability to create softer yet equally danceable bops.

Through the thirteen track project, PEEKABOO creates a unique sonic journey that is refreshing among a sea of saturated bass music. Don’t miss Eyes Wide Open below.

One of the biggest surprises on Skrillex‘s Quest For Fire, both in terms of the collaboration and in terms of the heat, was ‘Hydrate’ alongside PEEKABOO, Flowdan and BEAM. For Skrillex to tap one of the hottest vocalists out right now and one of bass music’s most promising stars in the same track is surely among the highest recognition PEEKABOO could ever desire. Since the release of the two albums, Skrillex has hinted that perhaps more is to come, while playing unreleased material throughout his shows this year.

Notable among this stash of unreleased goodies was a track that sounded like the aforementioned tune, but wasn’t quite it. Today, that track, titled ‘Badders,’ finally reaches the light of day, and sees the stacked lineup of ‘Hydrate’ return, swapping vocals from BEAM for added production flair from G-Rex. In short, ‘Badders’ is yet another brute that highlights the strengths of all involved. Carrying the flow that PEEKABOO has mastered while featuring key elements of each contributor, the cut is tailored to sound systems with a heavy sub. Flowdan’s lyrics sail smoothly over a bass-heavy undertone that gradually becomes nastier as it progresses (that crunchy bass in the latter half of each verse is just mean), and production swagger is ever-present from start to finish.

Don’t miss ‘Badders’ below.

As long-time supporters of PEEKABOO, it has been a pleasure watching him carve his own unique sound in an industry that (usually) rewards innovation. Having grown into an artist that now competes with the best, PEEKABOO continues to showcase how his distinct style works across all walks of bass music, recently adding his touch to NGHTMRE’s infamous ‘Street‘ and collaborating with Ganja White Night on ‘Mitosis.’

Today, the artist shares his first solo original of the year in a track titled ‘Bumpy Road’ released via NIGHTMODE. Staying true to the aforementioned statement, PEEKABOO elevates his sound further with his latest release, concocting a 140 BPM dubstep bop that’s unusually laidback but in all the right ways. Boasting no shortage of his signature style yet borrowing influence from deeper dubstep and hip hop all at once, ‘Bumpy Road’ is not a festival-ready banger, but a track meant for late nights in a dark, overcrowded club. The hip hop influence almost makes it a tune that you could hear Terror Reid spit some bars overtop, whereas the added grunginess in the second half gives the track its bass appeal.

We’ll be listening to ‘Bumpy Road’ on repeat for a while. Don’t miss it below.

If you’ve been paying attention to bass music at all in the past two years, Peekaboo is easily one of the most widely talked about up-and-comers in the entire industry. Dazzling ears with every single EP he’s put out, and netting support from every nameable player in the industry, success is nothing new to the Michigan native, now turned LA resident. Now, he’s teamed up with a young star on west coast, also currently living in California, in the form of ISOxo. For those unfamiliar, ISOxo had a blazing 2019 campaign featuring eccentric releases like ‘Ground‘ which was rinsed in almost every single top tier bass mix of the past 12 months, and ‘Radial‘, a collaboration with this good friend Knock2, which was released on RL Grime’s Sable Valley to thunderous applause. Now these two conquistadors of sound have teamed up for a true ‘Power Move’ of a release on Deadbeats.

‘Power Move’ sounds like the hype song for a dynamic team of dastardly dealers of destruction. If you’re about to get ratchet and fuck shit up, this should be an instant go-to. The vocals “bitch I’m a boss” are sprinkled ever so cleverly throughout before the first build, feeding your ego like an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord of audible treats. Both artists’ styles are easily recognizable, and work exquisitely well in tandem, creating this crushing slap-fest that sets your soul ablaze. The amount of layers at play in this piece makes it the sonic form of lasagna, stacks of rich yummy goodness that come together into an absolutely superb overall creation. Make a true ‘Power Move’ for yourself and stream the track below!

When one ponders a list of the most progressive producers in the industry, many names can pop into your mind. But, when it comes to stylistically sexy, wub flambeing, beat tastes, there is only one artist that should come to mind; Matthew Lucas aka Peekaboo. A man on a mission for the past several years, he’s swiftly clawed his way from sheer obscurity to being one of the most anticipated sets at any event he performs at. First amassing inordinate amounts of attention in 2017 when Bassnectar first rinsed his track ‘Wobbly’ at Electric Forest and subsequently at almost every set the rest of the year, he became a hero of the underground almost overnight. Since then, he’s dropped 2 spicy collaborations with the don in the forms of ‘Disrupt the System’, and ‘Illusion’, an international sensation in the form of ‘Babatunde‘ with G-Rex, and had 3 immensely successful EP releases with Imposters, Maniac, and Wrecking Ball, all three winning the support of a vast majority of the biggest names in the business. His latest work, the 4 track slug-fest titled the Impossible EP out on Zeds Dead’s Deadbeats label, continues his malevolent curation of sonic frequencies, taking his already fine-tuned sound and expanding upon it in ridiculous fashion.

The title track for the EP, ‘Impossible,’ has been teased for months, initially getting rinsed when the year was still young at Ultra Music Festival. Opening with an alien-esque melody that welcomes you into the clutches of the tractor beam of this spaceship, your curiosity will be spiked instantly. Adding foreboding vocals that loop “impossible” next, the only thing that you’ll think will be impossible is that this track will be anything but an absolute banger. The first drop opens with noises I can only describe as “mortars with swag,” deep growling basslines that then burst into the sonic embodiment of energetic confusion, leaving listeners amped with absolutely zero clue of what’s going on. If the initial drop was one single flying saucer coming down to grace Earth with its presence, the last drop is the entire interstellar fleet, hell bent on terraforming our world to their delight. Featuring some of the cleanest kicks and snares in the game and ungodly sound design (nothing new to the boo man), this track is truly a hi-fi listening experience.

The 2nd track on Impossible is an ode to the fact that only a true mad scientist of sound could come up with this piece. Titled ‘Nut Case,’ this one uses unintelligible vocal chops to set the tone, rendering one completely incapacitated. The first drop has a crispy, crunchy opening, paired with one of the most epic melodies I’ve ever heard. It’s almost reminiscent of a church organ that’s carried into an epic Lord of the Rings battle, thrust right into the thick of the action and proudly proclaiming that shit is about to go down in one of the craziest ways possible. The latter part of the drop all hell breaks loose, and you’ll have the strong compulsion to smash the closest object in sight out of sheer adrenaline. It’s almost unfair how well this track is mixed, with so many competing layers happening at once, but coming out so buttery smooth they build-on and amplify every other sound. A prime contender for “tracks that make you stand still and hold your head in utter disbelief as you stare bug-eyed at air and mouth ‘what the fuck’ to yourself,” ‘Nut Case’ will surely be stealing minds for years to come.

The next piece of this 4 track puzzle is ‘Rock The House’, arguably the most diverse song from drop to drop on the EP. Starting off with a hybrid trap/house combo that’s a joy to shake your ass to, you’ll be busting out your wildest trap arms and hitting your best shuffles with a grin on your face. The builds carry the tried and true Peekaboo aggression, but the first drop is definitely a different step for him and more proof that he can conquer whatever avenue of production he pleases. The last drop is much more his traditional style, albeit with even cleaner sound and a section that sounds like quite the pissed-off tornado.

‘Smack’ rounds out Impossible, gathering all hellions within earshot with its top-tier hype-inducing vocals of “bring us the motherfucker,” feeling like the lord of badassery is calling his minions to bring him anyone who dares speak out against him. The first drop could be Mike Tyson practicing his respective hooks on your abdomen, with thick destructive hits that leave you in waste. The second deluge of bass has a fake drop that will surely catch you off guard, something new to Peekaboo’s repertoire, done with the utmost precision. The final drop is the perfect end to the EP as a whole, with so much energy contained within you’ll be practically bursting at the seams from your molecules turning-up so hard. Rough, sensual, and so clean you could eat a four-course-meal off it, you could easily just have that section loop for hours on end, firmly and fiercely living in the present moment.

If there’s anything to gleam from Impossible, it’s that Peekaboo has already transcended any preconceived notion of what makes bass music what it is. Utilizing sound design that has reached an unparalleled level in layering and flow, he has crafted a body of work that is “impossible” to ignore. For fans of gritty, girthy, grimy bass music, this is a can’t miss, a can’t stop replaying, a can’t stop finding where he’s playing next because you physically need to hear these tracks on a pristine sound system and what madness he’s cooking up next. Peekaboo is here to stay, and his growth will surely see him headlining festivals across the country, and even across the entire globe. The only person that knows what’s coming next is Matthew Lucas, leaving fans anxiously awaiting any and every track that will grace their ears with. For now, check out the diabolical Impossible EP in all its glory for yourself below!

Likely due to their unique yet still somewhat similar styles, the two producers have both released tracks on big labels such as Wakaan and Deadbeats, while also locking down high-profile collaborations with Bassnectar. With the latter having remixed the former’s ‘Babatunde,’ it was only a matter of time until these two masters of wonk came together on an original work, and we can finally say that this dream has become a reality today.

Out now on Wakaan, ‘Colossal’ certainly lives it up its name, and the artwork only adds to the punch. The introduction is set in the depths of the jungle where the monumental ape resides, with distant yet approaching stomps hinting at the beast’s impending arrival. Minimal yet foreboding, the introduction speaks volumes to PEEKABOO and Dirt Monkey’s ability to captivate your attention. As the track soon reaches its apex, the influence of both producers quickly comes to light in the most wonk-tastic way imaginable. PEEKABOO’s freeform signature and Dirt Monkey’s wobbly synths come together to form a monstrous track, certain to be played out at all of the big festivals that 2019 still has in store. Don’t miss ‘Colossal’ below!

The reactions he is able to manufacture is something that every artist desires. PEEKABOO manages to manipulate empty space in a fashion that pushes attention to resilient bass. His latest remix slaps a refreshing outlook on the classic of ‘Lights Go Down’. Showing his versatility, the original still shines through with avid vocals but are now paired with a mind-bending melody and rabid reverb. A sense of pressure is created with the build up, only to be slammed through an alternate state of consciousness when the drop hits. PEEKABOO speaks new life into a staple track, and is able to push forward to make a bass statement in 2019. The fandom created only backs up the music and caliber curated in the character and branding of PEEKABOO.

There is a new EP just out through Wakaan. Liquid Stranger’s bass label is taking ‘Babatunde’ from PEEKABOO and G-Rex and giving it six fresh versions. The original was released in 2018 and has almost half a million streams to its name – we were feeling it.

Each remake on this EP lives up to expectation. PEEKABOO and G-Rex make a triumphant return with a VIP version of the mix, and it builds suspense from the offset before hitting you with the drops. Dirt Monkey utilises rhythmical depth on his version, whilst there is an epic energy to Eliminate’s which chops and changes rapidly.

Both TYNAN and LUZCID contribute the next couple of flips, with the former’s filling us with joy thanks to its deep, textured instrumentals. The up and coming duo um.. are given the task of rounding off the Babatunde EP, and do so with wonky beats and meandering shards of melody.

G-Rex says of this release: “For this remix EP, we went out and handpicked not only some amazing artists, but our great friends as well to remix our track. Each remix comes with their own unique style that makes the entire package cohesive and interesting.”

Two nearly back to back EPs on Wakaan titled Maniac and Imposters have skyrocketed on the charts, providing ample ammunition for notable DJs in live sets and mixes throughout the summer, demanding the sounds of PEEKABOO as a staple crowd pleaser.

The latest release from the Michigan native braves a difficult challenge. Presented with the minimal, bass-heavy canvas of Caspa’s ‘Tech Foul’, the bright young talent entwines his innovative fills and pristinely timed breaks, utilizing the minimal nature of the track to demonstrate his meticulous approach to production and reverberating bass lines.

There are a few artists who have stormed onto the scene in full force this year, and there’s no denying that both PEEKABOO and G-REX are at the top of this list. While the former has collaborated with Bassnectar and wev and released on labels such as Wakaan and Jadū Dala, the latter has teamed up with the likes of Hekler, TYNAN, and Kai Wachi and has released tracks on Never Say Die, Kannibalen and TWONK. There is no shortage of heat coming from these two, and they acknowledged each other’s dominance by collaborating on a massive remix for ATLiens’ ‘Witch Doctor’ earlier this year.

Yesterday saw PEEKABOO and G-REX come together once again in an original that can be described as a fury of freeform bass. Both artists have a signature minimalist sound that focuses on heavy bass lines and underground wobbles, and their latest track titled ‘Babatunde’ released on Wakaan shows listeners exactly why these two are a match made in heaven. The artists waste no time creating an eerie atmosphere before building into a brain-melting drop that can only be fully appreciated with a good set of headphones. The second drop takes listeners on an even wilder journey accentuated by gut-wrenching sound design and hypnotizing percussion. Simply said, the newest concoction from PEEKABOO and G-REX is a must-listen for all bass lovers.
