Legendary veteran MC Pharoahe Monch returns with a soulful new single entitled ‘Yayo.’ Produced by Lee Stone, the track features his signature quick-witted wordplay and tenacious flow. The funk-driven bassline and gritty drums give the perfect backdrop for Monch to do what he does best: show why bar-for-bar he’s consistently mentioned as one of the most technical rappers we’ve ever seen.

Monch proves why he is on another level lyrically, packing in punchlines with one clever bar flowing seamlessly into the next. He shows off his truly impressive ability to hone in on a concept and explore it from all possible angles, this one being described by Monch himself as “a giant metaphor for cocaine.” Lee Stone’s production sounding straight out of a 70’s blaxplotation movie certainly brings the metaphor to another level.

The single is his first official release since his 2014 album PTSD. While Monch has stated that the single will not be attached to any release, it certainly does give hope one may be coming in the near future.

For those unfamiliar, Pharoahe Monch has consistently earned a reputation as one of the most underrated, thought-provoking, and conceptual rappers of the underground. His work in the early 90’s as one half of the duo Organized Konfusion is considered an early precursor to the “backpack” scene of conscious rappers that emerged around the turn of the century, including Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and many others.

His four solo albums since haven’t disappointed either. Whether it’s the darker (though unfortunately not on streaming services) Internal Affairs or the lush textures of Desire, each is rich in its own unique sound while still featuring Monch’s sharp pen game in full force.

If this single is any sign of things to come, 2019 should be shaping up to be an impressive comeback year for Pharoahe Monch.

One for the treble, two for the bass. For this week’s throwback we’re bringing you a track that flew well under the radar even though it was intended to be a radio smash. This track dates back to the year 2000 before Mos Def adopted the alias and persona of Yasiin Bey. The track features the late Nate Dogg and Pharoahe Monch and comes off the Lyricist Lounge 2. The production comes from Rockwilder who back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s was one of the hottest producers out. And though it was set to perform commercially (but really didn’t, #83 of Billboard’s Top 100), Mos Def and Monch didn’t compromise at all lyrically. At the same time, the hook is provided by Nate Dogg – who (as usual) brings hard lyrics together with a melody that you can’t get out of your head. Check out the track below. Rest In Peace Nate.

Fresh off of the upcoming album dropping April 15th, the Pharoahe drops Rapid Eye Movement. We loved Bad MF and this track is also something special. As per usual he hits the beat with his sharp bars, but Black Thought really bodies this. There are almost too many bars to highlight. The recommendation here is listen to the track…

I’m a bad motherfucker man!
I’m a bad motherfucker man! Mr. Simon Says is back on the scene and as we anticipate his upcoming solo LP “PTSD” (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), he dropped this 3 minute warning shot. It’s very exciting to hear new music from Pharoahe Monch and he doesn’t hold back on this track at all. The beat is hard and will have you bopping right from the drop, and you can definitely expect some dope bars from this bad motherfucker. PTSD is a concept album that follows the struggle and after effects of an independent artist who has spent his tenure battling the industry, while navigating through life as a Black American male. The LP is set to feature some of the dopest and underrated rappers in the game as well and is sure to be a great listen for hip hop heads. We’re excited and we can’t wait for it to drop. Do you fux?
