“Every second is a little piece of me put into sound.” When an artist makes such a claim about a project, one can almost guarantee that it will be a sonic experience to remember.

Austin-based artist Justin Hawkes has been at the forefront of the American drum and bass scene for over a decade now, previously releasing music under the alias Flite before changing his moniker in 2020. The emergence of Justin Hawkes saw the artist keep his old fanbase while opening up opportunities for new fans to take notice, with every new release offering something unique.

Over the last year, Justin Hawkes has been building towards his biggest, most personal body of work to date, namely the Existential album released via Pilot Records on October 21st. Spanning fifteen tracks and over seventy minutes, the collection is a masterclass in drum and bass, solidifying the producer among the best storytellers in the scene.

“‘Existential’ manifests as a self-portrait. It weaves between my thoughts, philosophy and history, both within my career as a drum & bass artist in America and internally through the unknown future. The title itself represents the existential scenarios that have formed who I am, exploring my journey through crisis, the weight and forgotten wisdom of the past, even the sometimes comedic power of being an outlier.” Through the collection of tracks, Justin Hawkes unveils a little piece of himself, all while demonstrating his incredible abilities at creating enthralling pieces of music.

From euphoria to nostalgia, vocal-driven pieces to purely instrumental cuts, the variety of emotions evoked throughout the project are endless. Personal standouts include ‘Black Bloc,’ ‘Neverafter’ and ‘Arbiter,’ but Existential is so much more than picking a few favourites. It’s a collection worth listening to from start to finish, over and over again. Dive in below.

In late 2018, Bensley made his debut on Pilot Records with the infectious ‘Time‘ alongside T & Sugah and C. via the debut Destinations compilation. Now, over two trips around the Sun later, the Toronto-based artist makes his grand return to the imprint with his first original of the year following a triumphant bootleg of Tame Impala’s ‘It Might Be Time.’ As a label that is steadily becoming a personal favourite for quality drum and bass, each new release offers an exciting sonic journey, with Bensley’s ‘That Feeling’ being no exception.

Bensley’s got quite the knack for creating captivating and addictive rhythms, and that theme is rampant throughout ‘That Feeling.’ The gradual introduction sets the stage for what follows, with intriguing effects, a crescendoing melody and hypnotizing vocals slowly adding layers to the beat. As the drop hits, the energy is intensified with snappy percussion and a groovy bassline. Featuring a seamless change of pace halfway through to deliver a catchy house chorus before returning to the drum and bass cadence, ‘That Feeling’ is a well-rounded piece that is sure to please a wide array of listeners. Don’t miss Bensley’s latest below.

While #DNB2020 was a recurring hashtag across the North American electronic scene last calendar year, it’s the hopeful resurgence of shows in 2021 that is certain to bring this exhilarating genre to the forefront in this continent. Already popular across Europe, Australia and New Zealand, drum and bass has never really caught on in North America as it has in other parts of the world, likely due to bass music fans’ significantly different taste palette. However, with emerging artists such as SØL breaking the boundaries of the genre and adding a lighthearted appeal to his tracks, it’s only a matter of time until drum and bass finally gets the recognition it deserves overseas.

First diving in jump up before finding his future drum and bass signature in ‘Too Much,’ SØL returns to Pilot Records today with the dual single ‘I’ll Never Change / So Far Away,’ tapping vocalist Alec Primavera for both pieces that are sure to solidify his breakout as a promising force in the genre. SØL layers soothing melodies and soft soundscapes in ‘Ill Never Change,’ delivering a serene, almost pop-like touch on drum and bass. It’s infectious, bouncy, and gives listeners a glimmer of hope through tough times. Our favourite from the duet, though, is ‘So Far Away,’ a track teased by the legend Fox Stevenson since August of last year. Once again, Alec Primavera’s vocals provide a welcoming introduction to the piece, with SØL gradually adding elements to increase the track’s intensity. Without sounding cliché, ‘So Far Away’ is the manifestation of “future riddim” in drum and bass. The rapid melodic hits paired with a pristine combination of notes gives the track this irresistible energy that exploded in the dubstep scene in 2020, and that’s why we’re so sure that SØL is bound for greatness – exploring a familiar sound while doing something new and staying true to his drum and bass roots.

‘I’ll Never Change / So Far Away’ are two drum and bass tracks tailored to explode in the North American electronic scene, while also earning SØL a strong standing with fans around the world. Don’t miss them below.
