This year we have seen several comebacks of acts that have deeply shaped our adolescence. First, we got new Vindata music back in February, then some Skrillex releases, Swedish House Mafia a couple of weeks ago, and now a track from the legendary French act, Point Point. Legends that certainly need no introduction, whose impact on the European scene (both as producers, DJs and record label’s owners) is still underestimated in my opinion. After years of silence (their latest phenomenal upload on Soundcloud was 3 years ago), they are back with exactly what no one expected.

I have heard many who were expecting some kind of follow-up to hits like ‘F+L’ or ‘All This,’ but I think it’s useless to specify that it has always been a vain and unrealistic hope. If they still had similar hits to churn out they wouldn’t have stopped, would they? With its extremely funk bass and pop touch, ‘seeyaanotherday’ day deviates significantly from Point Point’s legendary future bass sound, but not from the nature of their project. There’s no need to dig too deeply into their repertoire to find many miscellaneous influences that range from bass music to house (they’re French after all). For this reason, talking about a new Point Point sound (as in the case of Swedish House Mafia) doesn’t seem right to me. I see ‘seeyaanotherday’ more like a continuation of the same journey. While asking around opinions about the track, I surprisingly found out that some perceived the lack of a singer as a weakness. I have a completely opposite opinion. In this way, the instrumental is able to breathe. Every sound has plenty of time to shine without necessarily having to exploit only those few moments left free by the vocals. In short. Is ‘seeyaanotherday’ an instant classic? Probably not. Is it a fantastic tune, perfect for this second half of summer? Absolutely.

Given that, alongside this new release by Point Point we recently spotted new music also via Record Record, I believe we are safe to presume we can expect new releases from both of the two coming in the next season. Meanwhile, you can stream ‘seeyaanotherday’ below or on your favorite platform here.

Prior to founding the eclectic label bitbird, which furnishes a platform for the softer delicacies of indie and electronic music, San Holo worked considerably with iconic Paris production trio Point Point. Working congruously with one another, in what one might consider the earliest infancy of both artist’s future trajectory, created a variety of opportunities for both direct and indirect collaboration. Of such items, ‘Hiding,’ selected from the second volume of Point Point’s coveted Filet Mignon compilation released in the spring of 2014 provides a primitive glance into the foundation of future bass, while also presenting an opportunity to derive some of the preliminary inspirations of both San Holo and fellow bitbird artist The Nicholas.

Take a moment to relive ‘Hiding’ from San Holo ft. The Nicholas below, and be sure to grab your free copy of the entire Filet Mignon Volume II Compilation as a direct download from SoundCloud here.

Big Wild’s powerful anthem ‘Invincible’ has just been reborn with a new visual and a pack of reworks. Seeing flips from Manila Killa, Point Point and J.Phlip the song takes on a few new lives. Manila Killa increases the intensity, moving away from his future pop stylings to take on a more vicious approach. Meanwhile, Point Point slows things down, stretching the vocals out over heartfelt keys. Don’t be fooled though, the soundscape gives way to a wonky reeling. While the first two explore the excitement of the wild, the final remix from J.Phlip takes a calm approach. This one is a spiritual drum sessions as the sun rises; slowly progressing while maintaining a steady and grinding rhythm. Check all the remixes below.

As mentioned, the release also comes with a new visual featuring a young female tennis player battling a dark robotic opponent. It’s a classic women vs. machine battle with a new twist. See how it plays out below.

Opening with looped claps, the minimalistic approach serves to build some serious anticipation. As the signature chant comes in, a myriad of synths begin to fill things in. When Kanye’s voice hits we are greeted with waves of sound; a thick wall of massive synthesizers and deep bass. Point Point proceed to break things down, drawing the track out with skillful progression. When the intensity returns once more, it feels like a celebration and epic finale.

On SoundCloud it’s easy to get lost in a sea music. Depending on who you follow, your stream can flow one song into the next as you work away at something, barely noticing when one song fades into the next. But every so often a song comes on that snaps you out of your trance, heats up your auditory senses and says “stop what you’re doing and listen to me.” Late last night this happened to me as Point Point’s ‘F+L’ crept into my headphones. From the very beginning the grandiose cinematic build pulled me in. It was an uncommon break from the familiar trap and future bass bangers that still packed an underlying familiarity. As it began to evolve, Kanye West’s ‘Flashing Lights’ came into focus, but in a way I’d never imagined it. The orchestral introduction gave way to an upbeat synth heavy sound. Put simply ‘F+L’ is a stunning composition that you need to listen to.

The project sees reworks from some of his finest countrymen including DJ Snake, Mercer, Point Point, and the mysterious newcomer Malaa. Aside from the French connection the EP also features Jauz and San Holo. The name power alone grants this a spin and from front to back the music lives up to the hype. Each rework gives the track a unique sound, from San Holo’s and Point Point’s varying future bass approaches to Malaa’s dark and deep house grooves. DJ Snake & Mercer deliver a high energy anthem primed for festival season, while Jauz takes things into uncharted waters with a mind-rattling concoction of screechy synths and smooth house vibes.
