There are few feelings better than stumbling across an artist that instantly amazes you. It’s a rare occurrence, but when it happens it’s strikingly memorable. When I came across Oddisee’s Odd Renditions early last year I thought, “who is this guy and why have I never heard of him?” I pride myself in being in the know when it comes to music and the fact that a hip-hop artist that is this amazing wasn’t on my radar was unsettling. Needless to say I became familiar with him very quickly with his music constantly on repeat. As I started to frame this write-up in my mind, I began drawing parallels to legends: A one man OutKast? Talib Kweli with a southern sound? A 2014 Q-Tip? In the end I concluded that comparing Oddisee to another artist is unjust…so just pretend you didn’t read that last sentence. What makes him so great? Everything. From his production, to his flow, his lyrics to his voice and overall sound. He’s original, introspective, and a breathe of fresh air, yet he almost immediately seems familiar.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/113143440″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

His most recent release Tangible Dream is a mixtape that exemplifies his current position. Oddisee is man living his dream. Unlike many he doesn’t strive for Penthouse’s, Private Jets, $1000 Champagne bottles or even immense fame. His dream is tangible and he his living right now, “All I want to do is make music for a living so that I can live to make music.” It’s message that should be taught in every classroom and embedded in the minds of society. Though the project was released as a mixtape it was easily one of the best bodies of work in hip-hop last year and could be mentioned in the conversation for album of the year (though it’s not technically an album). His best work to date, Tangible Dream showcases his versatility and sharp wit. The album opens with the title track where Oddisee paints pictures of his grind over a massive backdrop with militant snares. ‘Yeezus Was a Mortal’ takes aim at rappers who liken themselves to gods while flaunting his own skills.

“They see themselves as God or regard them selves as the chief/ The streets is hungry for kings, the kings are hunting for rings/ My nigga I don’t wear jewelry so fuck who rocking a chain/ I’m just rocking a beat, mo I’m just doing my thing/ Making money from rapping who claiming that talk is cheap/ If record sales and talent was ever one in the same/ I’d be running the game if that rule were ever to change/ But this a tangible dream, I don’t do it for fame”

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/113142998″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

‘Killing Time’ combines ominous loops with hard hitting drums for an anthem that’ll have you rapping along with ferocity. It’s also one of my favourite songs in the past 12 months. As the project progresses the vibe becomes more laid-back with Oddisee reflecting on life and relationships. His intelligence, wordplay, wise views and conversational style are reminiscent of legendary chi-town MC Common (there I go drawing comparisons again). ‘Yeah & Nah’ is another standout with the rapper displaying the lack of black and white that is life. “Is all about the business? Yeah and nah/ All for the music and lyrics? Yeah and nah/Do I fuck with niggas? Yeah and nah/ Do I care about who gone hear this? Yeah and nah”. From beginning to end Tangible Dream provides proof that Oddisee continues to refine his skills and get better with time.

The Beauty In All was released alongside Tangible Dream. The album is a 12 track instrumental effort that showcases Oddisee as a producer. It’s a mellow and easy listen that is the perfect backdrop to a Sunday afternoon or a great companion while studying. Standout tracks include ‘After Thoughts’, ‘The Gospel’ and ‘Patience in Play’ though I’d recommend just letting it play from front to back. In 2012, Oddisee released his first official solo album People Hear What They See. Taking an interesting approach Oddisee wrote the entire album outside while listening to the instrumentals he previously produced. The unorthodox approach paid off allowing for songs that transcended his individual experience yet still feel genuine and uncontrived. Can’t miss tracks include ‘Ready to Rock’, ‘American Greed’, ‘The Need Superficial’, and ‘Another’s Grind’.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/49580695″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

The final project I would like to highlight is Odd Renditions. The four track EP saw Oddisse remixing and rapping over some of his favorite artists which included K-OS, Bon Iver, Metronomy and Marvin Gaye. The end result is stunning, unique, and timeless. The project is a strong argument for why remixing music is immensely beneficial for everyone from the original artist, the remixer and most importantly the listener.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/1979943″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”250″ iframe=”true” /]

Moving from his earlier work to present day, Oddisee recently linked up with french producer 20syl for ‘Ongoing Thing’. A perfect match with a flawless fusion of hip-hop and electronic influence to create a smooth summer anthem. On the track he raps ‘I ain’t asking for change, I’m good at coining a phrase/ What I want is more than ever and never to fade away/ Is that too much to ask? Good, cause I ain’t askin’/ Already into action, I’ll have your answer retracted”. Considering his drive and the amazing music he has already created he’s poised to do just that. Oddisee’s catalog goes far deeper than the music showcased within this post. For even more Oddisee be sure to check out his BandCamp page and official website.

First things first, I want to clarify that the Hi-Yahs is one person. He’s not a band, dj crew, or pop group. He’s a hugely talented DJ/Producer hailing from Dallas, TX. His list of accolades include playing Mad Decent Block Party, a feature in Rolling Stone (Brazil) and a plethora of amazing remixes and originals supported by Tiesto, Diplo, Foreign Beggars, Bro Safari, 12th Planet, DJ Craze, Gladiator and more. On top of all this, he’s a down to earth dude who is constantly interacting with his fans in person and online. We had the pleasure of speaking with the man known as The Hi-Yahs. Check out the full write-up below.

FUXWITHIT: You started out producing hip-hop beats. How has that influenced your overall sound? How did your music evolve to where it is today? Was it a conscious change or more of an organic shift?
The Hi-Yahs: Hip-Hop had a lot of influence on my sound when I first started, a lot of my tracks had traces of hip-hop elements like 808’s and snare based intros on some of my electro tracks and some of my early dubstep had rap style drums and fast hi-hats minus the 808 sub. As for my sound right now it was more of a conscious shift or evolution, I knew that the only way I could gain longevity in the scene was to produce everything and be more of an all-around producer than a genre specific one.

FUXWITHIT: In a previous interview, you talked about Bro Safari’s contribution to your success through his inclusion of your collaboration with Alex Young ‘So Much’ in his Diplo and Friends Mix. Have you had a chance to connect with Bro Safari since? Is there any chance of a future collaboration?
The Hi-Yahs: Yea, I have been able to connect with Bro Safari on 2 separate occasions but never really got around to talking about collaborating. I still send him tracks on a regular basis though and I would love to work with him one day.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/59733327″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

FUXWITHIT: What is it like working with some of the biggest labels in the industry? How has it impacted your career?
The Hi-Yahs: It’s very cool and I get access to a lot of music way before anyone else does. The coolest thing about working with large labels is being able to work the big artists in the scene that you once looked up to.

FUXWITHIT: All of your releases are accompanied by a Free Download. Why do you feel it is important to provide your fans with free music?
The Hi-Yahs: Always loved buying music from my fav artists but with edm the music comes out so often that it ends up putting a toll on your bank account. So with free music I can get my name out there and it keeps my fans from breaking the bank on my tunes so they can come support me at shows.

FUXWITHIT: Do you prefer to DJ or produce? Why?
The Hi-Yahs: They are both so different but equally entertaining that choosing one over the other is impossible. I can tell you that I do look forward to DJing on the weekends more then I look forward to producing when I get home, but producing is on mind like 90% of the time though.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/141598811″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

FUXWITHIT: You’ve produced music in a variety of musical genres including Trap, Moombahton, Nu-Disco, House and more. Is there any genre that you’ve yet to explore that interests you?
The Hi-Yahs: There are a lot of styles of dance music that I have made but have yet to release them due to me wanting to keep them as secret weapons in my sets. But I have been playing a lot of jersey club over the past year and haven’t really made any of it yet so that’s one of the genres I plan on diving into. Also electro swing caught my eye a few years ago and I have been dying to make it but never got around to it.

FUXWITHIT: You recently produced a track for Waka Flocka. How did that come about? Did you get a chance to collaborate in studio together?
The Hi-Yahs: My friend FR4NCIS that I did the track with does a lot of hip-hop production and he came to me with the idea for the track. He already had the vocals from Waka and Kalyko so I didn’t get a chance to work with them in the studio. Most of the time when you do collabs with artists everything is passed back in forth via email.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/151375419″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

FUXWITHIT: A lot of people are saying that Trap is dead, oversaturated or played out. What are your thoughts on the current state of Trap music?
The Hi-Yahs: I feel like trap is far from dead and it’s getting bigger in the states with the emergence of chill trap/future bass and twerk/mid-tempo music becoming a dominate sub-genre. Also the market overseas in Europe and Australia is insane. I do agree that it is slightly oversaturated with mediocre music but that happens to any genre when it reaches high levels of popularity.

FUXWITHIT: Your fan interaction is second to none. From personally replying to nearly everyone on your Facebook to inviting fans to come and talk to you at shows. Why is this personal interaction so important you?
The Hi-Yahs: I know from past experience that one of the greatest feelings is getting a personal response back from one of your favorite artists and it can make your shitty day or week a lot better. So with that being said if I can provide any type of happiness to a person’s life I will go out of my to do it. (That sounds so corny, lol).

FUXWITHIT: Tell me about your craziest fan experience.
The Hi-Yahs: I think have one crazy fan experience. It occurred last summer and not sure of the city because promoters have a tendency to book early am flights after having me play 1-3 am sets which in turn everything blends together. Sorry end rant and back to the story. I remember being about a hour into my set and was going from moombah to twerk music and a bunch of girls hopped on stage and started twerking as usual lol. One of them tapped me on the shoulder and handed me a shot, so of course I took the shot then I turned to thank her but instead of her saying you are welcome she open mouth kissed me then she hopped of stage to dance with a dude that could have been her boyfriend. After my set she just left so either I am a terrible kisser or her boyfriend was mad.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/143563992″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

FUXWITHIT: What makes The Hi-Yahs DJ sets special or unique?
The Hi-Yahs: I think it’s maybe the amount of genres I play in my sets that makes them unique because you never know what style I am going into next. But what makes them special is that over half of the songs you hear that night you may have never heard before or have even heard of the artist that made it. I am always supporting new artists so I play out a lot of stuff I get from up and coming artists.

FUXWITHIT: Can you give us a few up-and-coming artists that we should be on the lookout for? You mentioned Trippy Turtle, Juyen Sebulba, Victor Niglio and Cry Wolf in a previous interview. All of which are doing pretty big things right now.
The Hi-Yahs: I love getting asked this question because there is so much talent. I can name like 2 dozen artists but I will give you this small list of dope artists: (ABC Order) Alean and Skyy, Foxsky, Goon Bags, Happy Colors, Maison Cartel, Our Time, Rickyxsan and TAGRM aka The Al Gore Rhythm Method.

FUXWITHIT: What can we expect next from you in terms of upcoming releases?
The Hi-Yahs: Brand new 100bpm mid-tempo remix I made for a Brazilian rap group just got released a few days ago and was featured in Rolling Stone Brazil. (You can check the article here).
I got some Melbourne and some big room coming out as well. Plus I got a really ignorant trap remix coming out soon that I did with my good friend ‘Pass The 40’ (Main Course Artist).

FUXWITHIT: What was it like to be featured in Rolling Stone (Brazil)? How does that rank among your career achievements?

The Hi-Yahs: It’s pretty F-ing Amazing!! Not in my wildest dreams would I ever expect to be in Rolling Stone. This ranks really high up there in career achievements, its up there with Tiesto dropping one of my tracks on his radio show. Crazy!!

Andrew Luce is an aspiring young Dj/producer from San Francisco, CA. At only 16 years old, this kid has been killing the remix game, taking hip-hop and R&B records to the next level. Upon hearing his latest remix of Jeremih’s ‘Birthday Sex’ (listen below) I was blown away. The track features a dark and sensual vibe that is reminiscent of Cashmere Cat . Hearing that track alone I thought, “damn this dude is cold” but as I began to dig deeper into his material, I became more and more impressed. If you’re feeling it, be sure to check out his sexy remix of The Weeknd – Drunk in Love (Remix) and his take on T-Pain’s club classic ‘Buy You a Drank‘.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/141516583″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Another mindblowing tune is his flip of 50 Cent’s ‘Candy Shop’. Utilizing the vocals from the original, Andrew Luce updates it with an insane 2014 trap twist. The drops are absolutely bonkers, sounding like something you’d expect from DJ Snake. Speaking of bangers, his remix of Far East Movement & Sidney Samson – Bang It To The Curb is another unbelievable track. It combines twerked out builds, low bass drops and some crazy cowbell that’ll make you lose your shit. He absolutely murders that cowbell, check it out below.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/139579354″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/132057550″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Though Andrew Luce has really shined as producer who makes hard hitting tracks, he can also switch it up. His original ‘Madeline’ shows his ability to craft chilled out, breathe taking vibes. His remix of ‘Thirteen‘ further illustrates his diversity by taking a step into the Dubstep realm. Not only are his songs amazing but they are also all free downloads!

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/122170384″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

It’s only a matter of time before you start hearing Andrew Luce’s name and music at every festival, club and party you attend. He is set to drop a remix of Get Low – Lil Jon & The Eastside Boyz on Wednesday (4/9/2014) which will likely be destroying clubs for the foreseeable future. Be sure to show him some love on Facebook and Twitter. And check out his SoundCloud for even more bangin’ tunes.

At fuxwithit we’re always working to provide you with new sounds, break up-and-coming artists and generally give you new shit to bump. Keeping in line with that we’ve got an amazing artist you need to check out. His name is Cesqeaux and he hails from Groningen, Netherlands. He’s dj/producer who makes Moombahton, Trap, Eclectic, & Generation Bass. You may have heard his name if you’re a fan of Dutch superstars Yellow Claw. That’s where I first caught wind of him, but never took the time to really look into his material. That is, until I heard the tracks off his EL Sabora EP with D’Maduro. The 3 song EP fuses latin music with Moombahton and Trap for a truly original and absolutely amazing sound. Every track is a certified banger, guaranteed to get you dancing. Stream the EP below.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/20802377″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”350″ iframe=”true” /]

Outside of the EP, Cesqeaux has also done a number of notable collaborations with Yellow Claw. The two biggest tracks being ‘IBETCHU’ and ‘Make It Clap’. Both contain massive builds and insane drops that’ll destroy any festival. Also be sure to check out the chilling ‘Psycho’ which will add some serious horror to any Halloween set it’s featured in.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/80337564″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Just because Cesqeaux has done some killer collaborations don’t doubt his ability to hold his own on a record. His originals ‘Justice’ and ‘Drill’ pack a serious hard hitting punch and his remix game is no joke either. Just listen to The Bloody Beetroots feat. Steve Aoki – Warp 2.0 (Cesqeaux TRAP 2.5 REMIX) or his remix of Justin Timerlake’s – Don’t Hold The Wall.

Hailing from Washington, D.C. Alex Young is an amazing young producer. He has dropped a slew of mind-blowing tracks over the past year. He is a multidimensional producer who’s work has already encompassed a wide range of genres. I first got into Alex Young after hearing his edit of Skrillex, 12th Planet and Kill The Noise – Right On Time. I have to admit when I first saw the track I thought, “An unknown producer (to me at the time) remixed Right On Time. What value could they possibly add to the already phenomenal song?” I was pleasantly surprised when I clicked play and was greeted with the sound of bouncing basketballs and blowing whistles, setting the tone for a very different and dare I say even more enjoyable version of the song.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/105130981″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Once I had heard the song, I was instantly a fan and looked for more of what Alex Young had to offer. Since then, a fair bit of time has passed during which he has put out a ton of stellar music. His most recent release is a remix of Icona Pop – Just Another Night. The song is sure to be a huge festival killer with poppy vocals, progressive builds and an absolutely ridiculous drop. It’s just one of many bangers that he has produced. Be sure to check out Mastermind and his collaboration with the The Hi-Yahs – So Much.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/131189421″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Part of what makes him standout is his versatility. Two songs that showcase his ability to make mellow, bass heavy and beautiful music are SWTRWTHR and his remix of BenZel – Fallin’ Love. The former makes use of the of The Neighbourhood’s popular Sweater Weather taking what the original track has to offer and building on it. The end result is an absolutely gorgeous soundscape that needs be heard.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/123070751″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

In just over a year Alex Young has really made a name for himself, proving to be one of the best rising young producers. With his debut EP set to drop this year, expect to be hearing his name and more importantly his music, more and more regularly. By the way this is only a selection of the great music he’s produced. For even more tracks be sure to check out his SoundCloud page.

The debut album solidifies the legitimacy of an artist and helps to determine if they are worthy of the hype. However, prior to the release of their debut is often when artists are at their hungriest. Grinding over the years, releasing high quality material for free. One artist who exemplifies this (and is def worthy of the hype) is Gaithersburg, Maryland’s own Logic. At 24 years old, he is the best artist in the game without an album out. His lyrical abilities are nothing short of incredible. Every verse contains witty wordplay, hard hitting punchlines and the perfect amount of humour. Not to mention he has one of the best flows in the game. (Peep the punctuation, that’s best flows in the game PERIOD). Just listen to ‘Disgusting‘ and try to think differently. Logic’s sound and style is also quite unique. Being from Maryland, he has an East Coast style with hints of Southern influence. Last year, he was featured in XXL’s Freshman class, inked a deal with Def Jam, and was part of the star studded Cud Life Tour alongside Cudder himself, Big Sean & Tyler the Creator. Those are phenomenal achievements for a young artist, but it’s his music that really speaks volumes.

One of the things that really makes Logic standout is his ability to do justice to, or sometimes even completely murder classic beats. Usually when I hear an up-and-coming artist get on a classic track like ‘Biggie’s – Kick in the door‘, I’m offended (how dare you? That’s like a child painting over a Picasso) but Logic continues to make me re-think that feeling. In the past few years he has ripped Outkast – ‘Ms. Jackson‘, Jay Z – ‘Bring It On’ (see above), A Tribe Called Quest – ‘Electric Relaxation‘, Kanye West – ‘Good Friday‘, Craig Mack – ‘Flavour in Ya Ear’ (see below) and even electronic classic Justice – ‘Dance‘. I haven’t heard a rapper kill this many classics since J. Cole was murdering mixtapes.

Just because Logic is master at ripping beats don’t think for a second think that he’s just another mixtape rapper. Logic has proven his versatility and ability to make tracks with mainstream appeal without sacrificing his talent. Whether it’s bangers like ‘5AM‘ and ‘Ballin‘, songs for ladies like ‘Do Ya Like‘ (shoutout Childish Gambino on the beat) and ‘Aye Girl‘ or just straight rapping on ‘Young Jedi‘, Logic can do it all. Did I mention he’s also coming into his own right as a producer? Logic crafted a beautiful, jazz inspired soundscape on ‘Midnight Marauder‘ while “Get Like Me’ shows him getting more dark and heavy behind the boards.

He is the type of artist that every listen allows you to better appreciate his abilities. You’ll be catching wordplay the 15th time you listen to a song. Add to the fact that he’s currently working on his debut album, which will be executive produced by the legendary No I.D. Right now Logic is like Kendrick Lamar in 2012, just before Good Kid, M.A.A.D City dropped. So get familiar with him now, so when his album drops and everyone is raving about it, you can act like you’ve been on him. If you’re feeling what you’ve heard so far be sure to check out all 3 of his Young Sinatra mixtapes starting with Young Sinatra: Undeniable (2012), Young Sinatra: Welcome to Forever (2013), and then Young Sinatra (2011).

On his latest offering ’24 Freestyle’ Logic spits, “It’s Logic, coming for their necks no disrespect, I did this shit in two minutes or less, spent a year on the album, who knows what to expect?” I expect greatness and seriously doubt Logic will bless us with anything less.
