Fans spent the weekend eagerly anticipating Pusha’s response and it’s here. ‘The Story of Adidon’ takes the beef to new heights with Pusha holding absolutely nothing back. From dissing Drake’s Mother and Father, to throwing more shots at Baby, calling out Drake for impregnating a porn star (and neglecting the child) and even throwing some brutal shots at 40, nothing goes unsaid. This might be the most ruthless diss record since ‘Hit Em Up’. Listen below.

Earlier today Pusha T dropped his incredible new album Daytona. Capping the album off is ‘Infared,’ which had Pusha rehashing the Drake ghostwriting fiasco with bars like, “The game’s fucked up/ Niggas beats is bangin’/ nigga, ya hooks did it/ The lyric pennin’ equal the Trumps winnin’/ The bigger question is how the Russians did it/ It was written like Nas…

Earlier today Pusha T dropped his incredible new album Daytona. Capping the album off is ‘Infared,’ which had Pusha rehashing the Drake ghostwriting fiasco with bars like, “The game’s fucked up/ Niggas beats is bangin’/ nigga, ya hooks did it/ The lyric pennin’ equal the Trumps winnin’/ The bigger question is how the Russians did it/ It was written like Nas but it came from Quentin.” It seems the track really struck a nerve with Drake as he just clapped back with ‘Duppy Freestyle’ (same day).

Drake pulls no punches going in at Pusha, Kanye, and the GOOD music team. From calling out Pusha for over-exaggerating his drug dealing days, to highlighting his own writing for Kanye, to roasting Kanye for trying to “hold back Virgil.” Drake hasn’t gone this hard since he dropped ‘Back to Back.’ Anyone who thought Drake couldn’t go bar for bar with Push is going to rethinking that once they press play. I mean just peep the close on this, “It’s going to be a cruel summer for you/ I told Weezy and Baby I’ma done him for you/ tell ye we got an invoice coming to you/ considering that we just sold another 20 for you…to be honest.” Stream below.

The subject matter as you may suspect is very much the same (coke, etc.) but Pusha doesn’t hide from the facts. Also, there are some shots directed at The Boy that really burn.
As the EP progresses, the G-house vibe gets heavier with each song – save a brief trap interlude near the end, from the title track with Freddie Gibbs. Special mention goes to his collab track with Wax Motif: embedded in the heart of the EP, the deep bass combined with Pusha & Starrah‘s overlaying vocals will get you bouncing without even realizing it.

Destructo’s Renegade 2.0 tour, which pays homage to the EP, will see him travel across North America from April to June. We highly recommend catching him live if you get the chance! Check out the tour dates and EP below; tickets can be purchased via his website.

DJ Imanos dropped ‘Gunshy’ before the weekend, and its a juicy one that is still a secret. The track features lyrics by Pusha T and the sultry vocals of British songstress Karen Harding.

Imanos’s production on ‘Gunshy’ has a hybrdized flavor of iconic Trap elements and pulsing mainstream electronic sound. With a stalking, dark and hypnotic percussion line laced with bass, and Harding’s smoky vocals, this track will make booties sway and heads nod along.

The prowling vibrations of the beat are echoed by the lyrics. Harding croons in the hook provokingly, “I’m coming for the bullseye/ let’s see who is gun-shy/ oh, what you waitin’ for?”. Pusha T’s lyrics are powerful as he spits real game on a flow that will rile you and provide plenty of hype for the party. The duo are a lovely pair with true chemistry on this seductive single.

As 2016 draws to a close you know we had to end the year by highlighting the best songs of 2016. As you’ve come to expect, this year’s list contains a broad array of musical styles and genres. We’ve got everything from ignorant turn-up bangers to thought-provoking, socially conscious hip hop and everything in between. The countdown continues today with 20-11 and will continue throughout the week, ending on Friday. Check out our selects below and be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments. Tomorrow, we release the final 10.

20. Zeds Dead – Stardust (Ft. Twin Shadow)

Off of the latest album Northern Lights Zeds Dead’s ‘Stardust’ keeps fans refreshed. The track’s bouncy beat, sparking electric guitar, and twinkling background vocals help Twin Shadow’s clear choral notes sink into your ear. This song’s nod to pure instrumental sounds attests to this duo’s unique and off-kilter bass music style. With heavy credentials from touring and producing with various other big names in the genre, ‘Stardust’ gives off a galactic glow just like a supernova. Zeds Dead had an exciting year starting their own label with an announcement in March, which means fans have a lot to anticipate in the (hopefully) near future.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/285269538″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

19. Skepta – Man (Gang)

In 2016, Grime finally made its mark across the pond in North America. Skepta was the leader of this movement and his album Konnichiwa was easily one of the best releases of the year. ‘Man (Gang)’ is signature Skepta, blending a rugged grime beat with his boisterous bars. Featured just before the hyped premiere of Drake’s Views on OVO Sound Radio only furthered its hype. With ‘Man (Gang),’ Skepta cemented his status as one of the breakout rap stars of 2016.

18. Destructo x Wax Motif – Catching Plays (Ft. Pusha T and Starrah)

This is genre blurring at its finest. With elements of trap, rap and house ‘Catching Plays’ was an absolute monster. Destructo and Wax Motif are the current kings of G-House and this just underscored their claim to the throne. Pusha T delivered yet another stellar guest verse, blending tales of opulence and criminal activity. Rounding this one out came Starrah’s hype inducing vocals, perfectly bridging the gap between Pusher’s bars and the heavy drops.

17. YG & Nipsey Hussle – Fuck Donald Trump

‘Fuck Donald Trump’ has over 13 million views on YouTube and has been used by many Americans to work through some stages of grief that they are still coping with after the election. As old as the tradition of voting in America that has been critics of the candidates that have inspired many different forms of art. This politically-themed song propelled YG and Nipsey Hussle into a tour under the same name this fall, and have had dates for performances posted as late as November 30th.

This track is a powerful warning and touches upon the many issues of the hyper-racialized United States. In the beginning of the track’s official video there are a few clips that include anecdotes of discrimination, images alluding to the violent nature of the socioeconomic and ethnocultural conflicts that are televised, and at the end of the video there is a clip of Trump himself promising to build a wall to designate the border between the US and Mexico. This is an audio-visual performance displaying the country’s contemporary harsh-truths. The track’s style is tradition. The rhyming which refreshes the true tradition of Rap and Hip Hop: giving an outlet and a voice to the frustrations of those who are shamefully ignored and discredited.

16. The Weeknd – Starboy (Ft. Daft Punk)

The Weeknd was a staple in the game last year and this year he proved that he could be consistent and stay at the top with a couple other cats. The title track from his 3rd studio album Staryboy comes in at number 16 of our Top 50 and for good reason. First, let’s start with how he was able to get Daft Punk on the record with him. No easy feat to secure these two, as they are super selective with who they choose to work with. If being a top selling R&B act with a couple sold out tours wasn’t enough to solidify him as a star in the game, featuring Daft Punk on a single definitely was. The production on this track is incredible. It seems simple on first listen, but when you really sit with the song and take it in there are so many nuances from the bass line to the keys and even cadences Abel uses with his voice; that make this song so great. When you take a look at the visuals for this chart topping track, you can start to understand what Abel means when he sings “look what you’ve done, I’m a mothafuckin’ starboy”. In the video, The Weeknd kills off his old self, becoming the alter ego he has referred to as Starboy. Great song, great visuals and the album happened to be just as solid.

15. Chance The Rapper – Summer Friends (Ft. Jeremih and Francis & the Lights)

“0h, oh, oh, incredible,” the opening lyrics perfectly describe the vocal intro crafted by Francis & The Lights. It’s the type of unique sound that makes you sit up straight and say out loud, wow what is this? When the bass and drums start knocking you’re overcome with bliss. Chance’s verses take you back to childhood like a Ray Bradbury novel, reminding you of the magic that was summers off. From ice cream trucks, to summer camp and trips to Blockbuster. Chance manages to craft verses that are deeply personal while being incredibly relatable. Just when you thought the track was peak perfection and couldn’t get any better, Jeremih comes through and elevates it even higher.

14. Rae Sremmurd – Black Beatles (Ft. Gucci Mane)

You know that song everyone plays when they make a Mannequin Challenge video? This is that song. We’re not exactly sure how this caught fire, but boy did it catch and Rae Sremmurd’s rise to the top hasn’t slowed much. The duo out of Mississippi secured themselves as hit makers this year with their sophomore follow up. Enlisting Guwop to join them on this track with the help of Mike WiLL Made-It, Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi crafted the perfect party-started that went on to become one of the biggest tracks of 2016.

13. A Tribe Called Quest – We The People

We, the people. The same three words that are notably from the US Constitution, also became the title for a track coming off of the long awaited and anticipated ATCQ album. This joint made our list for a few reasons which we’ll address here but it is important to note that this album is the first major album from Tribe in 18 years. These legends were able to write and record most of the album prior to Phife Dawg’s passing (RIP) after being away from the game for almost two decades. And the best part is, they didn’t miss a beat. ‘We The People’ is a powerful and timely track considering the US Election and all the civil unrest in the US. Over production that could fuel the revolution, ATCQ go in on the conditions of “the people” (representing Blacks, Mexicans, Muslims and the LGBT community) and address how the police have been killing off people in the street. Powerful, timely and unfortunately – completely accurate. ‘We The People’ is number 13.

12. Drake – Controlla

As of this moment Views is 4x Platinum and has spawned some of Drake’s biggest hits. The album was described to be a soundtrack for those who experience the change in seasons like we do in Toronto (Winter and Summer). The album flows as such, starting in the cold and brisk winter, warming up to the summer time vibes and back to winter. Being the title was originally Views from the 6, it makes sense that there are multiple tracks with a dancehall influence as the Caribbean culture in Toronto (or the 6) is vast and beautiful. ‘Controlla’ is one of those tracks and it does not disappoint. When the track leaked earlier in the year, many people expected Popcaan to remain on the album version but that was not the case. Nevertheless, ‘Controlla’ still went on to be a great hit, influencing others to jump on the dancehall bandwagon (no shade, Tory – we fux with you). With Boi-1da, Supa Dups and Di Genius behind the boards, there was no way this wouldn’t be a certified hit.

11. Fat Joe – All the Way Up (Ft. French Montana and Remy Ma)

Coming in just shy of the top 10 is Fat Joe’s undeniable club banger. Featuring French Montana and Remy Ma, Fat Joe returned with a well crafted and certified hit. Produced by Edsclusive with some help form Cool and Dre, ‘All the Way Up’ became Joe’s biggest hit since his ’02 smash ‘What’s Luv’. The infectious beat combined with the chant like hook made for a club hit and naturally spawned several remixes including a verse from Hov.

“What kind of music do you listen to” is the most frustrating, overused question of the 21st Century. People ask this question as if “genre” is a neatly defined term, as if all music can quickly and easily be divided into “rap” or “rock,” “alt” or “pop.” What’s worse, we live in a day and age when artists are pressured to be “pure.” Audiences look for “real” rap, EDM, rock, and country, as if melding genres somehow makes an artist “fake.” Luckily, Zeds Dead was not discouraged. Their new album, Northern Lights, plays with the concept of genre, refusing to fall under any one label. As a result, they put out one hell of an album.

I haven’t listened to Zeds Dead since the height of my dubstep phase (when I saw them perform with Skrillex, roughly five years ago), so I wasn’t sure what to expect when I turned Northern Lights on. I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least. Dubstep is a fun concept, and the advent of dubstep music was exciting, but as a “genre” it’s a little disappointing. The wobbles and drops that make dubstep so satisfying become repetitive; the music ceases to be individual songs and blurs into one big mess of wubs, wobbles, and wiggles. But Norhern Lights provides something new, asking “what is dubstep?” The answer may surprise you.

“Genres” are not neatly defined categories in which we can place music. Rather, each genre is characterized by certain qualities. A genre is more like an adjective to describe a song than a noun or classification that that song belongs to. Northern Lights shows us that dubstep can be rap, alt, jazz, or anything in between. Rather than just taking my word for it, let’s look at a few songs.

1. ‘Symphony’ (Featuring Charlotte OC)

This is the first song I heard from the album, and it got me hooked right from the start. Something about that piano riff and Charlotte OC’s vocals catches me just the right way. ‘Symphony’ is basically a dubstep version of Suzanne Vega. Though the instrumentals are undeniably dubstep, the wobbles and other dubstep components don’t overpower Charlotte OCs lounge-singer-esque vocals. This is a testament to Zeds Dead’s creative power and musical talent: most dubstep DJs are so heavy on the wobblesauce that vocalists are overpowered, if not drowned out completely. Zeds Dead avoids this by implementing acoustic sounds: classic dubstep musical components played with piano riffs and orchestral strings. The more synth-heavy wobbles only come in to punctuate and emphasize the vocal aspect of the song. Don’t take my word for it, listen for yourself:

2. ‘DNA’ (Featuring Jadakiss, Styles P)

This song is a testament to the rapping ability of Jadakiss and Styles P as well as Zeds Dead’s musical skills. ‘DNA’ isn’t rap with a dubstep beat, or dubstep with rap verses. It isn’t part dubstep and part rap: rather, it is 100% dubstep, 100% rap, and 100% fire.

As mentioned above, genres aren’t as separable as people seem to think. “Rap” describes a lyrical style, whereas “dubstep” describes an instrumental style. The terms, therefore, are not mutually exclusive. That said, it is incredibly difficult to make a song that really excels at both genres. Dubstep relies on a rising and falling beat, like a musical tide. Most artists try to meld dubstep with other genres simply by adding wobbles and drops here and there, but this misses the point: dubstep, like jazz, is largely based around building up tension and anticipation, followed by a release (in the form of a drop). Great artists, like Zeds Dead, can incorporate this into the lyrical aspect of the song. Listen for yourself and let us know in the comments if you agree:

3. ‘Too Young’ (Featuring Rivers Cuomo, Pusha T)

For anyone listening to this song, wondering why it sounds so familiar, you aren’t going crazy. ‘Too Young’ features Rivers Cuomo, the musical mastermind behind Weezer. It’s hard to say just how directly involved Rivers Cuomo was in the production of this song, but it is abundantly clear that his style influenced the final version of this song. It almost sounds like Rivers Cuomo wrote a song with Pusha T rapping the verses, and then he asked Zeds Dead to put their personal touch on the whole thing. The final product is impressive, to say the least: a synth-heavy Weezer-jam with rap verses. Speaking of which, Pusha T deserves a ton of credit for his lines on this track. His second verse is particularly powerful, with lines like:

We grew up on fairy tales,
No wonder we’re dreamers,
Rejection, know very well,
They didn’t believe us,
We made ’em believers,
You thought you ain’t need us,
How you gon’ stop us now?
The youth are the leaders.

This fits perfectly with Rivers Cuomo’s chorus, which states “girl, we’re too young, don’t give up on life, / don’t, don’t stop believin’.” Together, the lyrics are more inspirational than your run-of-the-mill “feel good” jam. See for yourself.

Pusha T didn’t write ‘Circles’ to be a social justice anthem. He didn’t write it to show off his lyrical chops. It is abundantly clear that Pusha T had one goal in mind when he wrote this song: to make America rage again. Pusha T takes us back to the days before Trump, before Hillary, before conscious rap was mainstream. This song doesn’t make you want to take to the streets, or fight the power: it makes you want to buy a keg (or racks, if that’s your style) of cheap beer, a few handles of cheaper liquor, and a stack of solo cups. And that’s totally okay.

Without naming names, a lot of modern rappers are trying desperately to do or be things that just aren’t them. Every song doesn’t need to revolutionize the industry or change the world. Sometimes we just want to party. With ‘Circles,’ Pusha T takes me back to college. I can’t help but remember the good old days: drinking too much, losing at beer pong, getting turned down by sorority girls.

But ‘Circles’ is more than a nostalgia machine. The lyrical structure may be simple, but Pusha T throws some fun wordplay in just to keep things exciting for anyone paying attention. Lines like “if we on the same accord, / I’ll take you out that Honda Civic” and “make it rain ’til it’s purple” are fun little easter eggs for anyone paying too much attention.

If you really want to pick apart the lyrics, you might notice a theme of cosmetic surgery throughout the song. Maybe Pusha T is just giving “compliments to your surgeon” as a creative way of describing how attractive someone is, but maybe this is a commentary on the lengths people go to to be desirable. Before I get too philosophical, why don’t you all just check the track out for yourselves and tell me what you think in the comments:

Destructo and Wax Motif are pretty much the kingpins of this bass house & g-house shit. Further cementing their status comes a colossal collab with Pusha T and Starrah.

Destructo and Wax Motif are pretty much the kingpins of this bass house & g-house shit. Further cementing their status comes a colossal collab with Pusha T and Starrah. From the ominous opening and Pusha’s picturesque bars (“Overdose on a sunset set, and an open coast, my network full of drug dealer who don’t hold a note”) you know this one is going be major. Pusha’s grittiness is juxtaposed with Starrah’s swaggy vocals (think Rae Sremmurd) while the beat sees a variety directions; moving from fierce trap, to energetic and of course, the filthy house grooves that Destructo and Wax Motif are known for. All this adds up to an absolute monster set to murder the remainder of 2016.
