A single repeating note opens the track before erupting into fast-paced drum beats that mirror the speed with which Strategy spits out bars. The rolling drumline gives way to an angelic empty space halfway through the track, reminiscent of deep 140 bpm classics from the likes of Coki, Benga, and Caspa. The moment Strategy goes silent is the best kind of sonic whiplash, the kind of moment that makes one audibly gasp “Whoa…” There’s hardly enough time to piece together the first verse of the track before he comes roaring back in for the second between the hypnotizing bassline and sharp hi-hats. It’s a simultaneously filthy and poetic end to this composition.

Strategy does not miss a beat on ‘Blue Mile.’ Amidst the murky low-end rumblings of Of the Trees and Crenshaw, syllable after syllable fires through like a machine gun. It’s clear that the grime wave has finally cemented itself stateside, with Strategy himself remarking that he’s “Got a decent amount of American followers.” In this case, they’re well-deserved.

‘Blue Mile’ is a standout track for Memory Palace. Along with the likes of LYNY, Esseks, DMVU, and Of the Trees himself, Crenshaw is a perfect fit for the vibe of the label. Having recently announced a hiatus next year from his usual Claude VonStroke alias, we can only wonder what label we’ll see him collaborating with next. Longtime fans are still awaiting a second Crenshaw album, given that the first came out nearly seven years ago. Whoever it is, they’re in for a treat. If 2023 has given us any indication of the trajectory of these two producers, it’s safe to say they’re only going up.

Red Rocks amphitheater is a place with both magnificence and majesty. It is a famous venue, naturally occurring perfect acoustics that allow an audience of thousands to see their favorite live performances under a blanket of stars, snuggled on the side of the Rocky Mountains, in sunny Colorado, USA. On April 26th 2019, one of the hottest brands in dance music is coming to Red Rocks: Pardon My French, the French House collective comprised of DJ Snake, Tchami, Malaa, and Mercer.

DJ Snake is at the forefront of electronic music, making hit singles, fire collaborations, and steamy videos with some of pop music’s biggest names. He started getting notoriety in the industry from his work on Lady Gaga’s ‘Born this Way’, which earned him a Grammy nomination, before taking over the underground electronic scene. Fast forward to 2018 when he made it to #1 worldwide on Spotify and YouTube, and #1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs Chart with Cardi  B, Selena Gomez, and Ozuna for ‘Taki, Taki’. Last year he also launched his own record label Premier Class Records. Some of these artists include Mercer, Grammar, and Saymyname.

Tchami also founded his own record label called CONFESSION, releasing music with many artists including  Malaa, Mercer, Brohug, and Dustycloud. Some of Tchami’s most recognized releases have been ‘Afterlife,’ ‘Adieu,’ and ‘Promesses’. It is worth mentioning, Malaa and Tchami seem to have a bond sort of like how the metaphorical angel and devil that sit on your shoulder do, and it’s been this way since their acclaimed No Redemption EP and following international tour. FUXWITHIT went to their headlining Red Rocks performance last year and was blown away by their energy, mixing, and production at every level of the performance.

If there was a black sheep in this family of Pardon My French, it would be Malaa, Known for wearing a ski mask, smoking cigarettes on stage, and demanding a Jack Daniels’ sponsorship on Instagram, this anonymous DJ released ferocious house tracks ‘Notorious,’ ‘Pregnant,’ ‘Bling Bling’, and ‘Cash Money’ and continues to steadily release mixes on SoundCloud called Who is Malaa?

Mercer has produced incredible funky, fresh house tracks, but creates under the genre of NeoDisco. Clearly influenced by the era of music his grew up during, Mercer has shared his modern take on disco and house music. As crisp and crunchy as his bass lines are there is still a smokey flavor of vintage vibes in his tracks. ‘Lunatic’ and ‘Let’s Get ill’ both with DJ Snake, have been millions of streams. He is of the jet set and can be found booking shows all over the world at major clubs and festivals.

His last album A Color Map of the Sun- you know, the one he spent years recording live musicians, pressed to vinyl, and then produced by combining samples with modular synths and digitizing effects- came out over three years ago (2013), and with declarations along the lines of near completion last December, the hunger for some shiny-new Pretty Lights is reaching hangry-zombie levels. Amazingly, Pretty Lights has released album after album, single after single, free making him not only a gifted musician but also a generous one.

Dubbed ‘the future of electronic’, the sound that comes out of Derek Vincent Smith (Pretty Lights) is a fusion of the meatiest parts of hip hop, funk, punk, rock, rap; all the good stuff is then lovingly marinated and sautéed in a delectable roux of synthy, growling, electro-bass tastiness.

During the hottest month of the summer, Pretty Lights will be performing at the enchanting Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, CO. August 11th and 12th. I would be prepared for masterful mixes, samples of the dankest variety, and an overall sparkling experience so long there are at least teases of the yet-to-be-released-2017 album. There were some complaints that echoed through out message boards, and throngs of attendees. One was the weather. It was cold and rainy, and I was worried about lightening (which is the line for Red Rock’s safety), but as soon as I was passed security, there was not a drop. The other issue was that there was no announced, or released set list, and for fans of What So Not, there was disappointment if you were not there when door’s opened. This also went for those who had purchased tickets to see Gryffin.

I was able to make it for Gucci Mane‘s complete set which was steady. There was an element of throwback-style in Mane’s performance, since it was just his DJ and himself holding down the stage. Mane rhymed and flowed like the professional that he is, and definitely warmed up the crowd on the chilly night. He performed some of my favorites including ‘Freaky Gurl’ and ‘Pills’.

Next up was one of FUXWITHIT’s favorites, Branchez, who killed it with a dynamic and emotional set. It was amazing to hear ‘Feel It’ live. I was particularly impressed by the visual graphics and transitions that Branchez chose to set the stage – they were seamlessly in line with his hyper-pop style. My favorite sequences were the underwater scenes, which seems to be a rip from Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement, but they were still sexy and entrancing.

Flosstradamus’s presence was first made known by the construction of a pyramid on stage in front of a false-cliff where I knew Floss would disseminate some sort of reality-altering bass sounds. The intricate stage set up really made this feel like a production, but also served a purpose of creating a holographic type of experience. During one of many disgusting remixes, a cartoon koi fish danced over Floss’s shadowy figure inside the pyramid and then jumped up into the background screens to ride the crest of anime styled waves.

Floss’s hype was also amazing, promoting 420-friendly taunts, and complaints about how we were hot-boxing him inside the pyramid. His playful personality shown through all the effects, and proved why the HDYNATION is as loyal as they are.

Some of the remixes that he shredded through were Afroman’s ‘Because I Got High’, Pharrell and Snoop Dogg’s ‘Drop It Like Its Hot’, Migos ‘Bad & Boujee,’ the classic nineties Alice DJ ‘Do You Think Your Better Off Alone’, Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’, Flume and Tove Lo’s ‘Say It, Daddy Yankee’s ‘Gasolina’. My all time favorite though was Biz Markie’s ‘You Got What I Need’.

HDYFEST 2017 was in the perfect location since the amphitheater is on the side of the Rocky Mountains, making the audience feel like they are perched on the edge of world as you look out onto the sparkling prairie, and up into the twinkling stars. The space is ideal for a bass-dripping rave like this one, and I am already looking forward to next year. Here’s until 2018!
