Fusing Indian influences with incredible and inventive trap and bass music, Rusha & Blizza are one of the most exciting production duos out right now. In less than a year they’ve unleashed 3 incredible EPs in Mudra, Sutra, and their most recent Mudra 2. Whether it’s crafting bouncy bangers, delivering powerful feels, or pushing the boundaries of sound design, every release is assured to impress. As their star continues to rise, we felt it was due time to connect with the production pair for an exclusive guest mix & interview. The mix features a ton of their own originals, a grip of unreleased IDs, exclusive edits, and some tracks from FUXWITHIT favorites like UZ, Sam Gellaitry, Baauer + more. As for the interview, we delve into their decade-plus relationship, the trap/bass scene in India, producing across genres, and the most important lesson they’ve learned this year. Dive in below.

Tell us a little bit about the mix. Where are you taking listeners with this?

We tried to keep it a classic FUXWITHIT mix while incorporating as much of our signatures and sounds we are currently vibing to as possible.

Musically it’s becoming telepathic and we rarely even need to work together physically.

You two have known each other for over a decade. How has your relationship evolved over the years? What impact has it had on your music?

To be honest our relationship has only grown deeper and we have never really had any arguments till now. Musically it’s becoming telepathic and we rarely even need to work together physically.

What drives you to create?

Just the feeling of doing things on our own terms all this while and getting noticed for it. We might not be close to where we imagined where we would be when we started off, but are more than grateful to everyone who has been a part of our journey and gotten us to where we are.

How do you balance having careers outside of music with working in music?

I (Rusha) am a full-time international lawyer and Blizza since the past year or so is now solely focused on music. It is a good balance as I bring a lot of the conceptualization and direction to the table and he brings the execution. This is how we have been able to sustain ourselves independently thus far.

When we spoke in the past you seemed to want to keep your music relatively niche, even going as far as to turn down offers from major labels. How do you ensure you’re growing the project in the right way?

With every project we want to try something new and we like having complete flexibility to experiment. I think with the peer reviews and our management’s feedback ensures that we keep growing in the right direction.

I think since this is what we grew up with, even when we are working on music that is not fusion, we subconsciously end up incorporating Indian influences to our music.

How important is showcasing Indian influences/samples in your work?

I think since this is what we grew up with, even when we are working on music that is not fusion, we subconsciously end up incorporating Indian influences to our music. Apart from that on a project by project basis we consciously decide how many influences/samples we incorporate.

What is the trap/bass music scene like in India? Is your music well accepted locally?

The trap/bass scene is at an all-time high. Both our previous EP’s were very well received, although we were not sure initially how they would react to them as our sound was quite different from what was being put out.

Your catalog is almost exclusively solo releases. Do you have any desire to collaborate with other producers? Is there a particular reason you haven’t done many collaborations?

I think it is the constant search for the next sound and the craving to put our thoughts on the canvas has been a limiting factor when it comes to collaborations. Although, we are constantly collaborating with choreographers, dancers, cinematographers, costume designers, stage designers, etc on long-term projects. For musicians, I think once we have the right project we would love to collaborate with indie artists and hopefully with our idols.

Your sound explores a variety of realms from trap to future bass and more experimental industrial vibes. How do you determine what type of music you’re going to produce?

We have a dual approach to it. We work on an EP or album which falls in a category, while also composing singles if we have any ideas which do not fall into the EP or album we are working on. Every few months we compile the singles and decide what to do with them.

I think it reinforces our inherent belief that we should create absolutely anything we want to create without doubting ourselves as life and everything around can be so fragile

What’s the most important lesson you’ve each learned in the past year?

I think it reinforces our inherent belief that we should create absolutely anything we want to create without doubting ourselves as life and everything around can be so fragile.

Where do you want to see Rusha & Blizza heading in the near future?
Just more random and fun projects that hopefully you and our listeners can dig.

New Delhi production duo Rusha & Blizza are here to make their mark. They first landed on our radar back in August, and have proceeded to impress ever since. Their most recent EP Sutra amazed and they were kind enough to share an exceptional unreleased track with us for our FUXWITHIT Takeover Mix for Beat Lab Radio. Their style ranges from hard-hitting trap to wild experimental bass, often with hints of Indian music to give their sound a masterfully exotic flair.

With the intent to make 2021 theirs, Rusha & Blizza are unveiling their first single of the year ‘Courage.’ More than just a single, it’s truly an immersive artistic experience. “We composed this song keeping the dance crew in mind and how the video will play out. The song as well as the dance form, are both experimental and it fits into our day one moto of Courage to the experimental,” explain Rusha & Blizza regarding the inspiration for this one. With the audio and visual components designed together, the end result is captivating and moving. The video is a gripping experimental dance routine that’s carefully choreographed. “Our old friend Chamy from Moscow introduced us to her Choreographer Igor and the dance crew and the moment we saw them in action, we decided to do a project with them,” the duo explain.

As for the music? Nothing short of exceptional. Anchored by a distorted flute lead, the sound is dizzying yet engrossing. The bass is deep and rich, and the percussion is pounding and powerful. The vocals add a sense of depth and hopefulness. The sonic palette matches the energy for an anthem that breathes determination, inner- strength, and courage. If you’re in need of uplifting energy, simply press play and let it wash over you.

Stream ‘Courage’ below and be sure to watch the accompanying visual experience.

I’m not sure how we got here, but it’s officially the end of August. As the summer begins to draw to a close, we’ve got a fresh installment of Focus Five to keep the heat coming. This month we have an experimental production wizard, some dark and deep bass, fresh future beats, an Indian trap duo, and some DNB goodness. Check out all five of our picks below.

Alexander Panos

Alexander Panos may seem like a strange pick for Focus Five, as the last thing he has posted on SoundCloud dates back to May 2019. However, the wickedly talent artist recently re-appeared on my radar with a nostalgic and fun remix for Skrillex’s ‘Turmoil’ alongside the equally talented Hudson Lee. This remix assured me that Alexander Panos has not disappeared for good, and that his SoundCloud biography stating “debut album in progess” must have some truth to it. Despite not having a very extensive catalog, there’s no denying that a single listen through the Chicago-based artist’s music is equivalent to a journey to a distant universe. The combination of beauty and bass contained with his music is unmatched, evident in opuses such as ‘Cycles’ and ‘Dream Recall’ with Frequent. His shorter experimental pieces such as ‘Going Down’ display an unparalleled sound design mastery, again pointing at the extensive skill set that the artist possesses. Here’s to hoping for more Alexander Panos material in the near future.
-SC

Filthsun.

As an architect of chaotic good and master of low frequencies, Filthsun. has been dropping too much gas for us to ignore. Hailing from Portland, Oregon and a true embodiment of his name, this eclectic bass music producer is swinging far above his weight class. ‘THE WHISTLER’ and my personal favorite, ‘i feel funny’ are absolute bodies of tunes that sound systems don’t deserve without proper sacrifice. His most recent track ‘Rest And Relaxation’ brightly celebrates his much deserved milestone of crossing the 2k follower mark with a swanky surprise at the end. The self-proclaimed “man w/ eyes” has a varying style that’s glued to the underground, and we’re keen to see what’s in store from this forward thinking artist.
-JS

reform.

It truly wouldn’t be an installment of Focus Five if I wasn’t shining the light on at least one future beat producer. The genre has become a personal favourite and the pool of talent seems to deepen with each passing month. The latest artist to catch my ear in the space is reform. His new release ‘hideawayy’ is all you need to become a fan. Fusing shimmering melodies, soulful vocal bends, knocking 808s and an abundance of bounce makes this one too good to miss. Taking it beyond the typical banger are the stunning breaks; fusing lush soundscapes and DnB drums to provide a deep and moving calm that perfectly contrasts the animated drops. With tracks like ‘hey boo,’ ‘this one’s for you’ and ‘amanacer w/ théos’ bringing the same calibre of quality, reform. is 4 for 4. We’ll eagerly be awaiting what’s to follow.

Rusha & Blizza

India’s trap and bass scene is continually developing and Rusha & Blizza are the newest hot export. The New Delhi based duo recently unveiled their impeccable Mudra EP. The tracks fuse classic Indian samples and sounds with an undeniable banging trap aesthetic. ‘Kaka’ perfectly embodies the sound of the EP. It’s energetic, exotic and pounding. If you’re looking for something a bit more industrial and agressive be sure to check out tracks like ‘Stromy’ and ‘This Bottom,’ off their SOPHIE-leaning Gloss EP. With a wide palette of sounds at their disposal, we don’t know what to expect next, but we know it will be heat.

Tom Finster

After Millbrook, this month I’m backing once again the #DNB2020 trend by bringing Tom Finster to your kind attention. Hailing from Germany and part of the amazing and immensely talented UPSCALE family, we’ve already briefly encountered him earlier this year as part of the latest Inspected album. The first word I’d use to define Tom’s music is sophisticated. The second one would be captivating. The third, sensational. He’s an artist that easily bends the Drum&Bass etiquette to his creative genius and always manages to deliver unique and astonishing creations. His latest EP From Here On Blind crowns years of refined productions and marks, in my humble opinion, the highest point of his repertoire, which by the way has already been already supported by tastemakers such as Mixmag and Skankandbass. The only negative side of the story? Too little music lovers are blessed by his music. Have a taste of his Drum & Bass delights below and don’t forget to spread the word!
