One of the most influential dons of the dubstep scene for well over a decade now, Rusko, is most well-known for his contagious on-stage energy, and his ludicrously dancy wobbles that set dancefloors ablaze. Doling-out dubs with the sole intent of crafting an elating communal experience, he’s been championed throughout the community for his insatiable drive and boundless creativity, including recently overcoming a personal battle with cancer. With seemingly no mountains being insurmountable in his life, he’s once again blessed the world with a fresh round of wubs with a 4 track affair in the form of Sauce, out now on Wakaan.

Kicking things into full-gear with the first track on the EP, ‘Ecstasy Wonderland’ is true to its name, filling listeners with intense feelings of glee and joy. From the looped vocal samples, delightful melody, and sensational trademarked wobbles from this audible madman, an instinctive grin will be firmly plastered on all listeners’ faces. Pure, unbridled fun is in short supply in the world at the moment, but this track opens up an express gateway to contentment that fans will be venturing back to for quite some time to come.

Who doesn’t like to indulge themselves every now and then? Well, prepare to gorge yourself with the second track on Sauce in the form of the scrumptious ‘Carrot Cake.’ Just as light and fluffy as its namesake, this track fits right into the playlist of any bright, sunny day, making bopping around town feel like a wholesome adventure rather than a drawn-out nuisance. With such upbeat energy, you’ll feel like the protagonist in a cartoon, with anything being in the realm of possibility, but shenanigans assuredly at the top of the list.

Ratcheting the energy up to 11, Rusko comes out swinging with the third track in this body of work with ‘Quarantinis,’ a ludicrous collaboration with a man that loves his wobbles as much as he loves his bananas, Dirt Monkey. Continuing the trend of aggressively shoving only the most positive of vibes into the earholes of all his loyal fans, the feel-good vibrations are readily palpable, and surely in abundance. Breaking your neck with a gigantic smile on your face never felt better.

Last, but surely not least, is ‘Wha Gwan’, a collab with a good ol’ southern boy that’s a frequenter of only the finest swamps in Louisiana, Boogie T. “Wha Gwan” means “what’s going on?” in traditional Jamaican Patois, and if you were wondering what exactly is going on in this instance, it’s one hell of a romping good time. Equal parts jiggy nonsense and wiggly wildness, fans will be left moving and grooving to their heart’s desire. Featuring vocals from Boogie expertly sprinkled throughout while simultaneously combining their trademarked sounds and styles creates a melodic, wubby, carnival of audible pleasantries. These two make a match made in heaven scenario, with complimentary energies and overall vibes that prevent any sort of clash or overpowering from either side. A perfect send-off for Sauce, ‘Wha Gwan’ caps the project with light-hearted jubilation and an instant compulsion to run back the entire project from the very beginning.

What’s more to say? Rusko has continued his campaign of legendary dubstep don status and incorporated some of the finest fellow wobble-dealers on the market into a project that’s just a downright good time. Who’s in need of some major Sauce? Rusko’s got you covered. Check it out in full for yourself below!

Since the return of Rusko in late 2017, we’ve seen a string of releases that show an artist that has truly evolved. It began with Rusko’s massive Has Made 5 More Songs EP on Circus Records, and more recently has culminated a few releases on Deadbeats including his EP MEGAGARAD. This time the UK dub legend gives us a more varied and intriguing side of Rusko with the Genghis Danger EP. This project touches on genres like drum and bass and even future bass, showing us that Rusko has no limits.

Beginning with ‘Go Up,’ the project sets the tone immediately as something different than what we’re accustomed to seeing from Rusko. Aside from the enticing vocals layered throughout the track, Rusko’s take on future bass is combined with his traditional impeccable sound design on the low-end while also toying with beautiful enchanting synths on the high-end. Moving onto ‘One Family’ which is packed with interesting drum-fills throughout the intro and breakdowns, while the drops are filled with grimy contrasting synths which play the melody. ‘oh my god’ is Rusko’s brilliant take on drum and bass, filled with interesting sounds and menacing lowsm this track adds a welcomed change in pace to the project. Finishing with ‘Bumbaclat’ this one is infused with elements of dancehall, giving it a distinct Rusko riddim sound. Check this out below!

The king of wobble is back and stronger than ever! Fresh off the self-released ‘Mr. Policeman‘ and ‘Squeeze’, the first single from his upcoming EP on Deadbeats, Rusko is showing no signs of slowing down with his third track in just over a month. Tackling PLS&TY‘s highly energetic future bass track ‘Rebel Love’, the dubstep don flexes his versatility in his latest remix. Staying true to the original vocals, Rusko flips the track into bass insanity after hinting at a drum & bass flavour through fast-paced percussion in the build up. At the fifty five second mark, the track will transport you to the early days of dubstep with wonky synths layered over lively and punchy drums. Paired with the anonymous vocals, Rusko creates a listening experience that can be pleasing to both bass heads and future bass aficionados, without breaking the flow of the track.

Rusko’s ‘Rebel Love’ remix is further proof as to why the British producer is among the most respected in the scene. Don’t miss it below.

Dubstep would not be where it is today without Christopher Mercer, better known as Rusko. A true pioneer in the genre, Mercer brought dubstep to the mainstream way before it was known in North America, and has continued to grow with it for well over a decade. After a successful battle against cancer last year, Rusko has returned to adding his Midas touch to music this year, notably through a bouncy remix of Selena Gomez and Marshmello’s ‘Wolves’ and an electrifying five-track EP. To say goodbye to another phenomenal year, Mercer has blessed fans with one last single titled ‘Mr. Policeman’ to warm your hearts during the holiday season.

‘Mr. Policeman’ is the perfect embodiment of Rusko’s journey through dubstep. Kicking off the track with a reggae-inspired beat that was extremely popular in the early days of the genre, Rusko catches your attention in an instant. The beat is accentuated with fitting vocals and futuristic laser fills, before the British producer shoots listeners back a decade with the wobbliest of drops. Although nostalgic, ‘Mr. Policeman’ is equally refreshing, as the wobble king merges his early influences with a modern touch, providing us with a wavy musical experience. There’s no denying Rusko will always be one of the greats, and his latest track continues to prove why he is respected by the masses.

Dubstep legend Rusko has been delivering relentlessly throughout 2018! He started this year off with a new single, followed by a remix to Selena Gomez & Marshmello‘s collaboration. Now, the UK-based producer continues his hot streak by blessing us with a new compilation, one with a nice and succinct title: Has Made 5 More Songs.

The pre-released track ‘Hot‘ is embedded deep within the middle of the EP. It serves to stand as the pinnacle track with such placement, especially given the surefire hype it brings along with it. Said hype can largely be attributed to its surging popularity, in the month that it’s already been out.

The EP starts off with a song you’ve likely heard quite a bit over the past year – a super-collab alongside Dangerous, Fraksure, and Simskai. It’s very easy to get caught by its infectious riddim sway, and you’ll likely catch yourself chanting along to ‘Walalangleng’ by the end.

The hangtimes of silence in each drop can be said to serve as a foreshadowing of what’s to come later on in the EP – but enough said for now.

Afterwards follows ‘High’, a tropical, sunshine-filled melody accompanied by a rather effervescent voice, chiming about the wonders of being high – as the title suggests. Throughout most of the song, there’s a consistent pulse from the bassline which sits in the background, akin to a “slight buzz”, or perhaps an afterglow – depending on how you feel the bass.

‘Hot’ is next on the roster, and coming back to the song, it can be considered as that one song which has “resemblance to the artists’s old-school style”, particularly with a small likness to ‘Woo Boost‘, as an example. Those also familiar with that one time in 2016 in which Rusko dropped 14 songs in 14 days, may recognize this as a “Dubstep VIP” to one of the releases.

‘Hot’ ends off in a way which seamlessly segues right into the next song after that, from “classic dubstep” to a reggae-dub track which proves that silence is quite a loud statement in itself. As you listen, take the song’s advice and mind the gap – other than that, enjoy a nice, chill cruise across the bass-fueled waves.

After all the sub/wub/dub madness, the EP closes out with Rusko giving a taste of his soothing and serene side. He taps into Anjulie‘s vocals from her song of the same name, providing a twinkly twist. The emphasized reverb gives the vocals an eternal feeling, which goes rather well with the tranquil and composed nature that Rusko brings.

The wide variety in the entire project showcases a bit of what Rusko’s come to create in the past, serving as a nice throwback for the long-time fans who are accustomed to his sound, while also simultaneously appeasing to today’s trends in music.

It’s no surprise that some of today’s hottest new producers fall within that group, including LA production duo NIGHTOWLS. What better way to celebrate and showcase the classic that inspired them then to give it a 2016 flip? With the stems provided by Rusko himself, NIGHTOWLS give it the perfect update. The rework maintains the core sounds of the original while giving it a nasty bass house sound. It’s a reminder of how incredible the original is and a testament to NIGHTOWLS talent. Anyone who can take on a track this massive and do it justice deserves major respect.

In 1999 London nightclub Fabric opened its doors for the first time.

Boasting 25 000 square ft. across three rooms, one of which is equipped with ‘bodysonic’ technology (sections of the floors attached to bass transducers – essentially extra subwoofers built into the floor), the space quickly gained a reputation for throwing forward thinking events with up and coming artists, many of which were (and still are) at the forefront of their genre. In November of 2001 the club began operating as a label of the same name, releasing monthly compilation albums, each of which was assembled by a different DJ. The series’, entitled fabric and FabricLive respectively, are well known for unearthing new trends as well as showcasing some of the biggest names currently contributing to the progress of various dance music genres. The two series, which trade off releases each month, differ by the genres they associate with. The fabric series focuses on more established styles under the umbrella of dance music such as techno & house, while the FabricLive series showcases movements such as dubstep, grime, breaks, drum and bass, and various other sounds that make up the ‘underground’ side of dance music. The success of both compilation series’ also prompted the label to start a regular mix series, further strengthening their ability to bring new sounds to the masses with more freedom than official releases can offer.

Below are a few of my personal favourites.

In 2007, two up and coming UK producers named Caspa and Rusko teamed up for FabricLive.37. Bringing even more attention to the quickly expanding blend of UK-garage, two-step and dub music, this album introduced a lot of listeners outside of the UK to dubstep. Furthermore, this release was surely instrumental in vaulting both Caspa and Rusko to international success and making both of their names synonymous with the genre. With pulsing basslines and hard-hitting shuffle beats, this mix is a great representation of the original intention of dubstep; Reggae-inspired, percussion heavy music with enough bass weight to change your life.

FabricLive.40 features Dutch drum & bass trio Noisia. The trio are basically gods of the drum and bass world, and also host a weekly podcast where they feature a wide variety of interesting and lesser-known bass music (not limited to drum and bass). With incredibly crisp and powerful productions on top of pounding, aggressive rhythms, this edition of FabricLive pushes forward with intensity from start to finish and is surely worth a listen, especially for curious-types who may not have much experience with drum & bass.

Though not all of the releases are recorded live-off-the-floor from Fabric nightclub as some might assume, both the fabric and FabricLive series’ continue to indiscriminately showcase new sounds and movements in the world of dance music. In focusing on releasing mixes that present music in the same way an attendee would experience it in a nightclub (‘licensed rave tapes,’ as Fabric founder Keith Reilly puts it), the series stays relevant and gives a ‘live’ experience to those that are not able to attend events in person. By handing over complete creative control to the artists they feature, the label is easily able to keep up with trends and new sounds. These releases (which are going into their 15th year) have not only become a go-to series for fans worldwide, but have also helped to solidify the name Fabric as being synonymous with progressive and innovative dance music.

I would strongly encourage everyone to take a look at this list of fabric and FabricLive releases, as this post can hardly hope to scratch the surface. Whatever your dance music tastes are, these series’ include something for everyone, and are also a great tool to experiment with new genres, or to get to know an artist. The editions featured in this post are largely dependant on my own tastes and are really just a small window into the wide variety of material that this prolific club and label offer.

That being said, here are a few more recommendations;

Foamo Fabriclive Mix, July 2012 (bass, house)

Jimmy Edgar FabricLive.79 (techno)

Skream Fabric Promo Mix June 2015 (techno)

Four Tet FabricLive.59 (future house)
