As for September’s playlist, the spotlight is deservedly occupied by Sibewest and his brand-new album Fallout. Presented as “the epitome of the past year of my life, my condition, thoughts, attitude and inner struggle with myself. Self-disappointment, emptiness and weakness”, the project indeed sounds like an emotional autopsy that lays bare the Russian producer’s inner self. Conceived by Sibewest as a story divided into chapters, Fallout oscillates between moments of contemplation characterized by wave and ambient tropes, and tumultuous segments that embrace electro and post-rock influences. The ten songs compose a journey that unfolds through passions, nightmares, and epiphanies, and which serves Sibewest (and all of us) “as a reminder that even after the darkest times, the light ones will surely come“. Excluding the tracks already published during the rollout, ‘Thunder’ seems to have quickly become the fan favorite cut. If you don’t feel like listening to the whole album, this is a single not to be missed.

Other personal highlights among the thirty songs featured in the tracklist are MitraWave’s ‘Last Call’, vowl.’s ‘The End’, and ‘Gateway’ by HAIKU. This month we also have a solid remix and bootleg section courtesy of lvst, Førgøtten, DIGITAL ENTITY, MIRAJ, and Myrmax. rvnti’s wave arc keeps getting better and better as well as Heimanu’s recent release streak. Juche showed no signs of letting up and dropped three releases in September as well.

Out of the blue, MYSTXRIVL and Sokos decided to release (or re-release) their 2017 classic, ‘Pixel’, on SoundCloud. I have no idea if there is a deeper meaning behind this choice, but in the meantime, I didn’t miss the opportunity to sneak such a timeless masterpiece in between all the new releases.

In terms of releases, the spotlight goes to cali.xo’s brand new EP ‘luv‘. This new concept project from the American singer and producer taps into wave, but goes beyond drifting to more instrumental and ambient soundscapes that highly remind me of one of my all-time favourite wave-esque albums. With ‘luv‘ cali.xo shows once again her strong artistic personality and her unmatched ability to create intimate and vulnerable atmospheres. The playlist features many other slow-burning pieces from Gladkill, Klimeks, søul., Cirrus Minør, Blut Own, and many others. Juche included.

August sees the long-awaited second edition of Arcadia festival. The first show is happening this very weekend in Moscow, while at the end of the month, it will be St. Petersburg’s turn. The lineup is simply immense and you can probably understand how much it pains me that I’ll not be able to attend either of them because I’m on holiday in the weeks between the two dates. Last, but clearly not least, Night Drive IV is coming next week. Should I add something? I don’t think so. If this playlist (and the previous ones) aren’t enough to get you through till the 7th, you can watch some spoilers to fight the FOMO.

skeler wasn’t the only one cooking though. Thirty days is a long time frame in the modern music industry and June was another month filled with freshly baked songs. June also means it’s time for the traditional mid-year reports and I was glad to notice how this column makes this process incredibly fluent. I won’t geek out and bring up stats and analysis here, but take a few minutes to go through the previous playlists if you want to get a more three-dimensional picture of the scene over the past six months. You’ll find interesting creative and release patterns that otherwise are hard to spot in the boisterous Friday-to-Friday routine.

If I had to highlight two artists who have stolen the show over the past six months, I would select Bafu and Juche. Bafu wasn’t a new name for me, but with a superlative streak of devastating remixes and originals, he rightfully became the unpredicted hero of the first half of 2024. On the other end, Juche‘s massive impact on the scene was everything but unpredictable. He’s already a superstar, but despite his status, he deservedly earned this shout-out for having released a staggering total of fourteen original singles so far (collab with Sublab included).

In addition to tracks from these two champions, in this Wave Monthly playlist, you’ll find charming and introspective tracks from STATIC ANGEL, BL1THE and cali.xo, glyte and Øtherside. SBU, Teneki, crowit., ZETMO, KENØK, Exodynamix, and the dream team REMNANT.exe & Noah B brought in some hardwave-ish energy while if you’re eager for obscure and mental cuts you have to check Cirrus Minus, GAZHELL and SAGE & KYLLER’s collaboration.

First off, thank you so much for taking the time for this interview! How’re you doing?

What can listeners expect when diving into this experience? 

You can expect atmospheric wave-influenced phonk. Something you can put on for a late-night drive or road trip.

What’s the story behind the SAGE project? How did it become and how long have you been creating this vision? 

This project was purely created as a place where I can just put my musical ideas out there and hope that it can help someone out there who might listen. I started the SAGE project in early 2021 and things have certainly snowballed from where it started as an outlet of my random ideas I create.

Have you always been a creative throughout your life or was this a new field you wanted to immerse yourself in? 

I haven’t necessarily been a creative my whole life other than when I first discovered music production, so this was a new field I wanted to immerse myself in.

What about the wave environment really drew you into wanting to incorporate your own touch?

Who are your biggest inspirations from the beginning that continue to inspire you today? 

My biggest inspirations are Skeler, Sibewest, yerbby, and heimanu.

Do you have any hobbies outside the music realm that help you escape the pressures of life?

 I will play some video games like Elden Ring or Dark Souls.

Any thoughts on an EP or album in the future?

I have a y2k trance EP dropping very soon.

Who are some of your personal favorite underrated artists that deserve to be known more? 

Personal favorites would include : Mrjay, Haydys, Jack Instinct, Miraj, Shrxpnel, Koi sum, Rxflxct, Baeldorf, and yerbby.

I see myself branching into a lot more than just wave-adjacent music. Having full creative freedom in this project for the future is my goal

Distinct Motive

Continuing to show support for the resurgence of the deep dub/140 sound, it would be criminal to not mention Ontario’s very own, Distinct Motive. The name might ring some bells if you’ve been following Deep, Dark, & Dangerous over the last half-decade, but that’s just scratching the surface of this project. His recent two-track EP on Bandcamp, Number 5, captures everything we love about 140 and Distinct Motive. From tasteful sampling, crisp sound design, and inventive songwriting, this recent release is a guaranteed welcomed addition to anyone’s library. 

Beyond recent releases, Distinct Motive is someone you do NOT want to miss if he’s rolling through your corner of the world. Usually always accompanied by an equally talented lineup, Distinct Motive has recently been part of Deep, Dark, & Dangerous’s Atlanta takeover with names like Truth and Pushloop. It seems like only the beginning for the man in question, but in truth, the Distinct Motive project’s current position is a product of 10 years of sticking to your guns and pushing sounds that are important to you. Eventually, people will listen.

DJ Jackum

Tracing information about DJ Jackum was not exactly a friendly task, but in the end, it was time well spent. Given the total lack of links on his SoundCloud and Spotify profiles, I feel obliged to thank The 3000 Network’s team for putting me on the right track with this article. Based in West Yorkshire, DJ Jackum is a self-described “party garage” producer (a tag I love) whom I discovered in late 2022 through his eponymous EP Party Garage, released by the prolific GS Dubs imprint. The festive and dancing soul of the EP, a quirk it has in common with pretty much all his releases, quickly turned it into one of my favorite UKG projects in a while. Bootleg or originals makes no difference, so far there has been no room for slow dances in Jackum’s discography. Every track is a showcase of pure funk goodness, a heap of bumpy basslines, pushing grooves, and clever samples. ‘Party Garage Disco Anthem’ and ‘Proper Knees Up’ are my recommendations to get familiar with Dj Jackum, but if you’re looking to pimp your blowout playlists or DJ USBs, there’s much more to discover. Also, be sure to stop by his Instagram profile where he’s all but elusive and enigmatic.

Kinoteki

Kinoteki first landed on my radar at the start of the year when I randomly stumbled upon his incredible Dawn of the Final Hour album, released via Tabula Rasa Records. Spanning eleven tracks and almost 55 minutes, the album was one of the most captivating start-to-finish listening experiences that I had experienced in a long time. Take ‘Third Strike’ for example, which itself runs well over six minutes, building slowly and weaving through complex soundscapes in a way that hooks your attention for its entirety. I have since explored much of Kinoteki’s discography (highly recommend Silence Kills with Kelbin) and have never been disappointed. The New York-based artist has a mere 850 followers on SoundCloud at the time of writing, but don’t let these numbers fool you – he’s the real deal. Kinoteki doesn’t only make long, introspective burners, either. You can tell the artist is having fun with his art through light-hearted bootlegs of tracks such as ‘Rumble’ and more recently, ‘U Just R.’ Kinoteki is one to watch. Don’t sleep.

RWB

With UK sounds taking over in North America (see 140 and garage) it’s only right that we highlight one of the UK’s nastiest bass producers out: RWB. The multi-genre producer embodies an array of sounds that have become synonymous with the UK ranging from grime to garage, 140, drum & bass, and beyond. His SoundCloud is a goldmine of masterful dark bass music released in just over a year. A number of killer grime flips caught my original attention with ‘Donny Don Flip,’ ‘Ice Rink,’ and ‘Man I Wear’ all ringing off. In the mood for some moody DnB? ‘Lost Intamacy’ is a sultry and shadowy romp that will have you thirsting for more. Bending Drill and 140 together his most recent release ‘Frozen Time’ is a pensive and ice-cold banger.  If you want that raw, gritty UK shit, RWB is the plug.

With the wave scene continuing to grow every day, artists such as SAGE are pushing the environment forward in the best direction. Putting in major work each day to bring listeners unexplainable journeys to the future. His discography of work contains some of the most powerful and eclectic wave pieces to date. From gorgeous hardwave compositions to some wild phonk with a ton of attitude throughout, he’s truly showcasing his versatile production skills through each release.

One of his most recent singles, ‘Arcane’ is a massive collaboration with Aekae. Bringing in what makes this style truly remarkable and enticing. Time-shattering drums, euphoric melodies throughout, and a vision for the future, this is easily one of his best releases to date. Both styles intertwining with one another is simply astounding and jaw-dropping. The atmosphere will just take your breath away.

His newest release, ‘Delirious’ contains a dark and sinister force within. Perfect for those late-night drives no matter what environment you’re in. The vocal he uses works perfectly with his production. Carrying your attention every second with its chill and vibrant personality. Completely immersing the listener! And not to mention a complete switch-up in rhythm at the end. Creating a whole new emotion to add a whole other layer to the overall piece. So make sure to keep an eye on him. We’re excited to hear more from him!
