I created the instrumental for this track to be an atmospheric house track that transports you to another world while keeping that Sasha Rome bounce. Ero808 did an amazing job singing on the track, using a Weeknd-like flow to glide over the instrumental with catchy melodies and vocal production. LaVera and I previously worked together on our single ‘I’ll Never Be The Same’ and I knew her silky smooth vocals would fit well over this funky house beat I made. The track started with the arp which I built a drum beat around, and then for the chorus I jammed on the funky chord stabs until I got a rhythm that made me dance. After that I added the guitar licks to wrap it up. It’s one of my simplest yet favorite guitar riffs because it just fits in the pocket so well and really plays off the groove.

Lavera leads the track with her angelic vocals, only highlighted by Sasha Rome’s impeccable groovy production. The singer also gave us some insight on the meaning of the lyrics saying, “So I’m ironically really good at communication, but sometimes I get really bad social anxiety, so that’s more or less what that’s about. Just not wanting to deal with people and all of their bullshit that they tend to carry with them. I love meeting and connecting with people but sometimes it’s exhausting. So to summarize, the song is about shutting people out, and choosing not to deal with the world. And [about] how I’d rather stay up in my own little world where I don’t have to deal with people and can control my own environment.”

While Bonsai Collective is known for spotlighting melodic production influenced by trap, jazz, hip-hop, and funk, Denali Records will be focusing on harder electronic music like bass, drum and bass, house, and more. The new label will be curated by capshun, Sasha Rome, and Afrosamuraiist, who’ll be receiving support from their other Bonsai labelmates.

Denali originates from the name of the tallest mountain in North America. This symbolizes the heavy, hard-hitting tracks we will release with the new label. We want Denali to be the home for hard electronic music including bass music, house, DnB and others. With Bonsai we focused on the melodic side of EDM and we’ve had to exclude some good music that didn’t fit the Bonsai sound. Now with Denali we can represent those harder-hitting tracks and between the two labels we can cover a lot of ground in the electronic scene. We will continue to support both established and up and coming artists, with the quality of the music always being #1 for us.

Not letting the limitations of quarantine affect their creative processes, the musicians decided to connect over Zoom to finish the track.

We tried to create an emotional track that takes you on a journey, one that could be played in a club but also listened to at home. The ending is one of my favorite parts of the track because while the rest of it is a driving four-on-the-floor house track, at the end everything stops and opens up letting you really feel everything you just heard.

‘Meridian’ absolutely takes you on an emotional journey. Static electricity moves through the track, carried by booming basslines and twinkling synths. While lissfully blending elements of future bass and bouncy house, you can hear the beatmakers’ unique styles shine through. ‘Meridian’ is definitely an experience in which HYPERDAZE and Sasha Rome entrance us from start to finish.

There’s no shortage of impressive tunes but as always a few standouts have caught my ear early on. GREGarious’ ‘Return of the Boom Bap’ is a must for hip-hop heads combining Rakim & Mos Def vocal samples with shimmering synths, groovy bass and careful cuts. Afrosamuraiist brings the ‘Flava’ with his delectable  contribution that’s meditative yet sultry. This one feels like doing yoga in clouds. Rounding out the standouts comes Sasha Rome & Capshun’s ‘I Need.’ It’s a driving and emotive blend of house and future feels. An apt close, it’s that bittersweet feeling of a vacation fling coming to an end.

The above picks are just a small sample of the wealth of vibes presented on PIL Society’s latest compilation.
