California based musician, Shlump has released his new EP, Program Malfunction on Circus Records. He continues to impress his audience thanks to the diversity in sound design and mind bending arrangements. Making appearances on Circus Records, Wakaan and more, he’s leaving his mark on the underground bass scene anyway he can. Shlump is known for his space filled techniques consisting of top notch engineered elements. You can imagine yourself floating through the cosmos with every release. And this EP is proof he’s evolving in the best ways.

Program Malfunction is a trip through time and space. Each piece holds a characteristic standing out in their own way. The first track, ‘Program Malfunction,’ is his collaboration with experimental bass artist, Call Me. From the future garage style introduction, to the hard-hitting chorus, it has a lot of surprises. You can hear both styles being combined in harmony. A perfect introduction to the whole project.

Next up is a track called ‘Hardcore.’ The vibe lives up to the title completely. If you love heavy bass in your face, this one will be on repeat for you. Starting out with a lush and intense introduction, he knows how to get the listener invested and ready for what’s to come. With a heavy buildup going straight into the drop, Shlump wastes no time in sharing his creative craft with the world. It’s a blast of distorted leads, taking you away into another dimension. Making an extra effort to please headbangers everywhere.

‘Lose Control’ evokes a calm yet impactful feeling onto you. Being able to migrate heavy sound design into a different style is what makes the song feel fresh and new for Shlump. It’s an experience like no other. You can hear and feel the amount of time it took to create such a song. ‘Lose Control’ hypnotizes the listener and brings them into a whole new world of sound and rhythm. A song you’ll want to hear live in the future.

Finally, he takes a bow and ends the project with a special surprise. He blesses our ears with a remix of the Doctor P classic ‘Sweet Shop.’ Released back in 2009, it was a major tune for the legend himself. Now in 2020, it’s back. But this time, it’s brought into the future thanks to Shlump’s impressive production style. He does the song justice and more which is sometimes hard to achieve with classics. Once the piano from the original kicks in along with his heavy drums, you know we’re going to hear something spicy. The buildup shows he’s ready to show what he’s made of. And once the chorus is activated, it will leave a huge smile on your face. The intense and distorted leads he creates compliment the original track well. Incorporating a similar vibe and feeling from the original made it feel familiar and new at the same time. A notable remix overall.

In the end, we’re pleased to say Program Malfunction is a strong and memorable project. From the first song to the last, you’ll have it on repeat. We’re excited to see and hear what he creates next.

Former head of all things Twonk, Sami Diament, has had arguably one of the strongest rebrands of any electronic artist in the past two years. Trading-off wonky trap stylings for psychedelic thoroughfares, he’s completely shifted his sound focus and fan base. Finding a home and abundant amounts of friendship in his new auditory ecosystem of the Wakaan label, he’s made numerous connections and substantial amounts of growth. One of those friendships came in the form of Michael Petzel, also known by his production name Shlump, regarded for his galaxy-sized extraterrestrial-esque beats. Today, these two modern-day auditory storytellers have come together for a collaborative EP release entitled Universal Wub.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/708779578″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Your first step on this intergalactic journey is the title track ‘Universal Wub,’ a gentle descent into the full body of this work. The vocals “unlocking the secrets of the universe” welcome you into this piece, creating a frequency-laced sense of energetic exploration. The drop gives you the sharp sensation of not floating through space, but rather gangster moon-walking. The attitude and intended aesthetic is readily palpable, with elements from both artists easily felt throughout.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/709270567″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Your next blast into the cosmos is ‘STARCHILD,’ a track sure to you in tune with your inner zodiac sign. Aided by silky smooth vocals from Sarah Hudson that send chills up your spine, this is a track that will surely set your atoms ablaze. The melodic segments of this track mixed with the raw bassiness of the drops gives it this light and dark effect, making the entire piece an adventure from start to finish. The melodies included within are majestic, and all the little accents are fully-fleshed out, each note having inordinate amounts of depth. This track really highlights how well these two artists’ styles jive together, LSDREAM’s melodies popping like a popcorn kettle over the top and Shlump’s patented basslines leaving you completely enraptured.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/709767187″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

‘R.A.V.E.’ sits in the third spot on the EP, a reminder to all fans of electronic music that RAVE is actually an acronym for Radical Audio Visual Experience, with radical audio experience being a fantastic descriptor of this track alone. The build leading into the first drop emits this old school techno vibe with female robot-like vocals repeating “radical audio visual experience” before descending into a primordial ooze of low end, surely forcing all listeners caught within its frequencies to catch a one-way ticket to being fully lost in the sauce. This track is immaculately mastered, with ludicrous amounts of feeling in every second. One can easily get up and groove to this track, or simply lie back and close your eyes taking it all in.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/709768627″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Last on Universal Wub is a living, breathing ‘ORGANISM.’ The opening starts off like a sci-fi thriller, leaving one wondering “what in the world is about to happen to me!?”.The initial drop is so low a boxing referee would call it for going below the belt. A melody that leaves one curious comes quickly after, shifting up the vibe before fully smacking you once more with bass that is more full-bodied than the first drop, incorporating an eccentric hollow horn-like sound that is reminiscent of a tentacled monster from another dimension trumpeting an inconceivable horn. The song drifts off with horns and a light melody, the beast slain and the adventurers alive to fight another day…at least for now.

Universal Wub is a prime showcase of just how well LSDREAM and Shlump’s styles meld together, with Diament’s mind-bending melodies and mystical arrangements perfectly matching with Petzel’s all-too-familiar basslines of absolute destruction. It’s easy to see why these two formed an entire tour around this EP, as anyone that listens to this body of work can only be left to wonder what else these two madman could possibly come up with. If you want to hear these songs rinsed on a proper sound-system, definitely make the trek to the nearest tour stop for intense hi-fi satisfaction. For now, check out Universal Wub in all its glory for yourself below!

Native to Santa Cruz, Michael Petzel is swiftly approaching a decade-long career producing and performing a diverse scope of bass music under the intergalactic guise Shlump. Grazing freely between varieties of glitch-hop and dubstep, Petzel’s style composes influence from west coast hip-hop and early 2000s breaks as depicted in early projects, such as Hydro released via MalLabel Music in 2014.

Maintaining a proclivity for quick cuts and hip-hop sampling, Petzel has leveraged the modern era of bass music as a point of transition for his own style, shifting towards the untrampled grounds of leftfield bass in 2016, marked indistinguishably with the release of his Fracture EP via ShadowTrix and the closely preceding Like a Drug EP via Wakaan Records.

Shlump envisions the exploration of a vacated foreign planet in his latest System Crash EP as his voyage dives deeper into the experimental nether. Jagged ranges of mountainous bass scatter the surface of the distant domain providing the immediate perception of depth, while slanted digital crevices provide an overall exquisite texture that permeates each track from the project.

Be sure to check out Shlump’s four-course audible feast below, out now via Wakaan Records.
