LA-based BINKS is a trap OG that still somehow remains slept on. As half of Pyramid Juke he helped to shape the electronic trap genre with a slew of bangers including the classic ‘Yen’ alongside Ookay. In the past few years, he’s launched his own solo project and signed with Mayhem’s SKRONG record label. With the release of his Frequencies, Hope and Transcendence EPs, BINKS has proven his skills continue to sharpen with time. 2020 is shaping up to be BINKS biggest year ever, with collaborative projects in the works with Bro Safari and PRYZMS, plus a ton of solo material on the way.

We caught up with BINKS for an exclusive guest mix and interview. The mix showcase BINKS heavy-hitting trap and bass style perfectly and even teases upcoming collabs alongside legends Bro Safari and Craze. As for the interview, we discuss his early trap roots, personal transformation, 2020 outlook and more.

Can you tell us about your roots in Pyramid Juke and your role in the early stages of electronic trap music?

So Pyramid Juke was one of the many artists who help set the direction of edm trap music. We didn’t blow up but we did make a lot of noise. The last EP we released was in 2014 on 12th Planet’s Record Label Smog. We were turning heads but we lacked consistency & effective communication so it fell apart.

You went through a pretty big personal transformation over the past few years. From a new exercise regimen and yoga, to a plant based diet and meditation. What prompted this change?

Well during my early 20’s I was feeling like shit all the time. Depression was kicking my ass & I was worried about how my health would turn out if I continued my poor lifestyle habits. So I searched for a solution to rid myself of the unpleasant feelings that have haunted me for years.

The changes impacted my life in such a positive way. I lost 60 pounds in total. I have more energy, I’m not depressed & I feel more focused than ever before.

How have the changes impacted your life and musical output?

The changes impacted my life in such a positive way. I lost 60 pounds in total. I have more energy, I’m not depressed & I feel more focused than ever before. I work a day job & go to the gym so it feels nice to still have energy for music.

How did you connect with Mayhem and Skrong? What’s it been like working with them?

Well after Pyramid Juke fell off, I started to release music on my own because the thought of not releasing any music made me sad. I picked a name that I thought sounded cool & started working. I released singles on my SoundCloud & Mayhem would always show love & drop comments on my tracks. Mayhem was the only OG at the time really fucking with my music & one day he sent me a message on SoundCloud asking if I would be down to drop an EP on his label SKRONG. Fast forward to 4 amazing years later & I’m still with them. Mayhem & SKRONG gave me hope again, I was sad after Pyramid Juke because I felt like maybe music was not meant for me. SKRONG showed me that music is & will always be meant for me.

I love adding specific percussion sounds in my songs because it reminds me of my ancestral background. It reminds me that they still live through me now & forever.

I read that you have indigenous roots. Has that any impact or influence on your music?

Yes I do! To the indigenous people of Mexico & it certainly does! I love adding specific percussion sounds in my songs because it reminds me of my ancestral background. It reminds me that they still live through me now & forever.

You seem to have an inclination for collaboration. What is it about working with other artists that you enjoy so much?

It’s nice having different perspectives when creating music, sometimes other people can see & hear things you can’t & that helps me observe the spectrum from a different lens.

Do you think coming up as part of duo had any impact on this?

It def played a role but I also enjoy having my own space to create.

I heard that you have an EP with Bro Safari in the works. What should we expect from it? Do you have any release timing in mind?

Yes I do! It’s been so much fun working with Nick! I actually dropped 2 IDs in this mix of our unreleased tunes so everyone can see what we got going on! As of right now no solid release date yet, but I will def keep y’all looped in!

So for 2020 I’ve got an EP with my boy Pryzms dropping on SKRONG, I have a collab with the OG Craze coming out on SLOW ROAST, I have collaborations with Mayhem, Armanni Reign, Drug Money, Nate Rose, ZIGGY2PLAYA & Kevin Flum…

What else do you have planned for 2020?

So for 2020 I’ve got an EP with my boy Pryzms dropping on SKRONG, I have a collab with the OG Craze coming out on SLOW ROAST, I have collaborations with Mayhem, Armanni Reign, Drug Money, Nate Rose, ZIGGY2PLAYA & Kevin Flum. I’m also working on another solo EP & still have about 10 more instrumentals that need rappers & singers so I’m def locked in for 2020.

Tell us about the mix. What should listeners expect. What was your aim when putting it together?

The aim of this mix was to show the listeners what to expect from the BINKS project in 2020. I added some unreleased tunes in this mix with the collaborators that I mentioned above & I also have some fairly recent singles of mine & other artists that have inspired me in this mix.

Any final words or advice you’d like to leave fans with?

Thank you for taking time out of your day to support me! I appreciate every single one of you so much! I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I enjoyed putting it together for you. Remember if you have a dream go chase it & never give up! You are all worthy of greatness & love. Again, thank you, I love you! May the universe flow in your favor!

‘Limitless’ is a track that will bring you back to the glory days of trap music without escaping the evolution that the genre has seen over the last few years. Combining elements of hip-hop and electronic music with ease, BINKS and Pryzms hypnotize you from the get-go with a pulsating bass that gradually builds with the addition of punchy percussion. As the drop hits, the true insanity of the track is unleashed as a metallic roar of synths and a pounding bassline drive the track forward. A short bridge to the ninety-second mark of ‘Limitless’ brings listeners to the highlight of the song, as the energy and intensity is lifted to new heights and does not let up until the track comes to a close.

Atlanta is hotbed for trap related activities. It’s no surprise that the influence trap rap music has had on the scene there has bled over into the EDM scene. Mayhem was at the forefront of bringing trap into electronic music and today he’s back with a brand new track, titled, ‘Odyssey,’ and in it, he creates an epic journey through sound.

‘Odyssey’ begins with an ever hopeful atmosphere that quickly shifts into a much more ominous vibe, gaining intensity until Mayhem unleashes an incredible trap influenced soundscape filled with wonky lead basses and spot on percussion that is sure to make dance floors erupt. The second drop has a much different feel, opting to use a dark, unflinching, wavy bass line to carry the rhythm through. ‘Odyssey’ uses heavy drums that really stand out and give the track a major push forward in terms of how impressive Mayhem’s sound design is. As it fades out, the listener is returned to that hopeful atmosphere, instilling a sense that your journey is complete.

‘Odyssey’ is truly a remarkable piece of work, blurring the barriers between genres, it takes the listeners on a beautiful journey through Mayhem’s mind.

LA-based bass producer BINKS has been on quite a journey. He first made major waves in the scene in the early years of trap as half of Pyramid Juke. After the group split, he did a fair amount of soul searching and re-oriented his life. From launching his solo artist project to switching to veganism and finding mental and physical health through yoga and meditation, the last few years have been transformative to say the least. We had the pleasure of premiering the title track off his EP Hope last year which really set the foundation for his new chapter. Today BINKS explores yet another new chapter, this time teaming up GNOSIS. An LA native with influences coming from his shamanic heritage, deep meditative mind states and ancient technology, it was almost destined for the two to come together. With their chemistry overflowing one track wouldn’t be enough, so they’ve blessed fans with a full EP entitled Transcendence which is out now on SKRONG.

“Transcendence’ embodies the depth of limitless potential that lies within the human consciousness. Go beyond psychological constructs & rise above to your true potential,” says BINKS. Sewn throughout is an underlying energy that’s part spiritual, part otherworldly. ‘Astral Projection’ kicks things off with lazery synths and deep bass meeting a futuristic sci-fi aesthetic. It’s dark, heavy, and alluring, pulling you in for what’s next. The first half of ‘Symbiot’ is stripped back; percussion snaps over bass pulses creating a brooding alien soundscape. The second half makes the first feel like a calm before the storm, as an intergalactic battle erupts. If the previous track presented the battle, ‘Calcination’ is an all out war. Futuristic beings clash under the shadows of monolithic black pyramids towering thousands of feet above. Acid rain showers the scene with terrifying warmth. The project’s title track sees BINKS & GNOSIS taking us straight back to the trap. 808’s are layered with vocal gun sprays and “gang, gang” samples. Like all the track prior, this one only gets harder and weirder as it progresses. Closing things out comes ‘Defcon,’ an experimental heater that feels like exploring new and dangerous worlds. There’s an overlying mystique present that’s juxtaposed against disconcerting reverberations that practically scream danger with each beat.

GNOSIS describes the project saying, “Transcendence’ is an alchemy of vibrations & intention. This project is a fusion of organic & synthetic soundscapes, dancing in tension and release, bringing order to chaos. It is the process of an old paradigm of bass music transcending into the new.” Dive in below.

With influences ranging from Outkast and Organized Noise to Gucci Mane, Future, HXV and Mayhem, you can bet his sound is ATL to the core and his love for 808s is strong. After grinding for years he had the pleasure of connecting with one of his idols in Mayhem. With Mayhem instantly impressed with his music, it was only a matter of time before he ended up on Skrong. Today we have the pleasure of premiering his latest and greatest work, ‘Sovereign’.

‘Sovereign’ is an absolute beast of a banger. Drawing inspiration from Game Of Thrones and mixing it within his own emotional turmoil, PRYZMS concocts a track that is epic in its sound and style. It pulls elements of future bass and dubstep and hammers them into a gritty trap framework. With just over 300 followers on SoundCloud PRYZMS may be Atlanta’s best kept secret, but we don’t expect that being the case for much longer.

Stream ‘Soveriegn’ below and be sure to check out our interview to get familiar with the talented producer.

Were you born and raised in Atlanta? What impact has the city had on your music?

Born and raised in Atlanta. My dad actually made music and was a part of the Dungeon Family, so being around them as a kid, music stuck with me ever since. I grew up listening to Hip-Hop and EDM so much that it made me want to start producing. My top influences from Atlanta that sparked my interest in producing are Organized Noize, OutKast, Gucci Mane, Future, Mayhem, HXV, FKi. And listening to them growing up, influenced the music that I make. I’m a sucker for thumping 808s lol. The city has given me the hustle and grind work ethic.

How did you link up with Skrong?

It’s actually a crazy story. A couple of years ago, Mayhem was doing a remix contest for a song he produced, ‘Smoke & Mirrors’ by Lil Silk. With Mayhem being one my all-time inspirations, I entered the contest, hoping that maybe if I won the contest or at least got his attention, I’d get the chance to work with him in the future. Sadly, there was a problem with the site, and the contestants never got the results back. Fast forward to a few years, Boombox Cartel was playing in Atlanta, and I saw who I thought was Mayhem, in the VIP section. Later that night, I checked on Instagram and saw Mayhem’s story. Turns out, in his story, I was standing at the front of the stage. So, I messaged him and told him that was me in his story, he clicked on my profile and told me he liked my music and that we should link up. The rest is history.

Where does the title ‘Sovereign’ originate and how does it tie into the song?

The song title came about because at the time, my girlfriend and I were watching Game of Thrones. I was aiming for a powerful sound, and while creating & listening to the song, it made me think of a king or powerful individual.

The song relates to me almost quitting music. While I was losing my mind, I had to lose myself, in order to level up my music.

Can you speak to importance of the vocals “I’m losing myself”? What do they mean to you?

The song tells a story about someone who has just become a king. The people of the city have their doubts that the new king will be good at his job, because he is perceived to be weak. In the first drop, “I’m losing myself” are the words of the king, getting negative energy from the people, all these tasks being given, the city being under siege. He ends up losing his mind. In the second drop, “I’m losing myself” is him arguing with himself. He’s thinking about giving up and surrendering. The words take a turn as he “loses” his old coward self, stands his ground, and gives his all. Then the words “level 3” come in and basically he leveled up and won the battle. The song relates to me almost quitting music. While I was losing my mind, I had to lose myself, in order to level up my music (if that makes sense).

What emotions or experiences shaped ‘Sovereign?’

This song means a lot to me and is very special. My girlfriend gave me the idea of bringing flash drives to shows we went to. They’d end up getting thrown out, forgotten, or most of the time, not even listened to. I’m glad I brought one to the Boombox show because not only was I able to give it to him, I also got in touch with Mayhem, So right after I met Mayhem, it gave me more motivation to try even harder with a “go big or go home” mentality. Which is the feeling I felt creating ‘Sovereign.’

BINKS may seem like a new name in the trap scene but he’s actually an OG. As half of Pyramid Juke he helped shape the genre and unleashed a myriad on monster tunes including the Ookay assisted slapper ‘Yen’. Despite the strong reputation and fan base the duo built, they eventually landed at a crossroads, with the two members wanting different things, “I invested a lot of time & effort trying to make the project grow but unfortunately me & my friend wanted different things in life. My dream is to make music everyday and to take care of those who I love, doing what I love. My dream is to bring people together with the universal frequencies we call music. There is too much division on this planet & it makes me cringe. I believe music transcends cultural, ethnic & religious layers of the human consciousness & it allows us to set asides those walls between us & work together. So this dream that I have is way bigger than me. So when I left Pyramid Juke I knew it was going to be hard starting over but I had to make a decision. Do I want to work at a job for the rest of my life with regret for not pursuing my goals & dreams? Or do I want to make it happen? So here I am, trying to make it happen.”

After making the tough decision, BINKS has been consistently dropping fire. From his stellar remixes of Missy Elliot to his last EP Frequencies. The project landed on fellow Trap OG, Mayhem’s label Skrong. The label and Mayhem have been instrumental in his growth as solo artist, “Working with Skrong has been such a blessing in my life. When the whole Pyramid Juke thing fell off I continued to work on music & I would always send out tracks to other artists. The only artist who would respond every single time was Anthony (Mayhem) telling me ‘yo this is dope!! Keep it up!’ or to give me tips on production. Then one day I sent him another track & he said ‘how about releasing a EP on my label?’ Oh man I was so happy that day haha & I still am! Working with Skrong has been great honestly, everything has been flowing so smooth, the communication is great, the vibes are dope, I’m blessed. It’s such an awesome feeling when friends believe in your work & want to work with you. I will always fuck with Skrong & I will continue to be associated with the label for years to come. Skrong believes in me & I believe in Skrong. They worked with me at my lowest & helped me grow. Best believe I’m going to be working with them when I am at my highest. We are a team. We a family.”

With the Skrong family at his back, BINKS is here with a fresh single entitled ‘Redemption’. It’s a filthy trap heater that embodies the nostalgic feel of the genre’s early days without sounding dated. While a large portion of the current trap sound is dubstep inspired and sound-design driven, ‘Redemption’ takes it back to the basics. Snapping 808’s are sprinkled in with gun blasts and some raw synths. It’s that uncut dope that’ll remind you why you fell in love with the genre in the first place. Stream below and look out for his joint EP with Gnosis dropping later this year.
