One of the “sketchier” characters in the world of bass music production, Tim Maitland has been pushing the envelope of gritty, dark, trappy beats under his alias sktchy ppl. Now he’s unleashed his latest consciousness-blending creation, ‘Lonely’, a grimy romp through the seedy underbelly of bass music

‘Lonely’ starts off innocently enough, with an airy melody and light drums with “where the cash at?” vocals used intermittently. The white noise gets gradually louder before descending into the first drop, an already blazing beat by itself that only gets more impressive as the song progresses. The second drop incorporates much deeper, harder kicks while still keeping all the elements of the first drop, feeling like a Pokemon that has just evolved. The ending blends all these layers together into a veritable auditory lasagna, layers on layers working in blissful harmony. The melody returns shortly after while “everyday’s a grind day” is looped and then replaced with “don’t tell me to hold on, because you know I’ve been on top for so long,” an instant ego boost if I’ve ever heard one.

Sktchy ppl has shown with his latest productions that everyday is indeed a grind day, with each subsequent release showing immense amounts of growth and personality, traits that are in high demand as of late in the music industry. For now, check out ‘Lonely’ for yourself below!

When you hear the term “sketchy people”, what usually comes to mind? Dark alleyways, people adorned in dark hoodies that obscure their faces, and an air of mystery with a touch of impending doom. Today, sktchy ppl, born Tim Maitland, has brought us a sonic embodiment of his own persona in our latest installment of our guest mix series. This mix is rife with IDs from sktchy ppl himself, including collaborations with both Mo Vibez and Untitld. We’ve also had the distinct pleasure of getting to talk with him about his musical beginnings, 2019 as an already legendary year, and of course all things Lost Dogz. Make sure to also keep an eye out for a sample pack and new track he’ll be dropping on 7/1! Check out our full interview and guest mix out below!

In your previous interview with us, you spoke in detail about your father and his work in the music industry. Do you believe that if he hadn’t been doing something musically inclined that you still would’ve found your way to making music?

Honestly, probably not, he was the one that got me started on the drums at age 3, he’s the one that taught me how to play guitar and bass at age 13, so yeah honestly, I am so lucky I was given this opportunity, I may have wanted to do something with music, but I would of just been bad at it without the push from my father.

Everyone in this industry is just so nice and it’s such an honor to be a part of it, I’m just grateful to be part of lost dogz and to have such great friends

2019 seems to already be a massive year for yourself and the rest of Lost Dogz. How do you stay grounded during all this?

Well, just staying humble, not getting an ego or thinking I’m better than anyone else. It was honestly a surprise to me that I got booked for main stage at both Emissions and The Untz, and honestly that opportunity led me to meet some of my favorite people I know now, from the L*o*J bois, and sober rob, THRPY, soulecist, adiidas, and all the bois I already knew. Everyone in this industry is just so nice and it’s such an honor to be a part of it, I’m just grateful to be part of lost dogz and to have such great friends.

Sktchcast, your last EP release, was a witty mix of music and skits. Do you plan on continuing releasing EP’s as Sktchcast’s?

I am planning on doing a follow up to sktchcast, it probably won’t be my next EP release but it is coming, I already have a lot of the skits written out, ideas from the homies like Vide and my boi colton, it’s just fun to show people my sense of humor, even if it is stupid.

Give us a rundown of how you prepare for a set.

Well, this year certainly made me really realize to be prepared for sets and not just wing em, basically depending on the festival I’m playing I go for that mood. For example, Emissions is a more downtempo, low frequencies, leaned out type fest (that’s how I interpreted it anyways) so I wanted to go more, lo-fi trap, less wubs, 70-110 bpms, more of an early sktchy ppl vibe. The Untz was way more hype, and because we had that huge b2b we planned it together and it was way more hyped, and wubs, and dirty and 130bpm and up, I had an amazing time at both and cant even compare them, they were both amazing.

the feeling you get when you are on the main stage, with 4 of your best friends in the entire world…is a feeling I cannot describe.

You were recently part of the Lost Dogz takeover b2b set at the Untz! Can you tell us a little about that?

Oh man, probably the funnest festival I’ve played so far, the feeling you get when you are on the main stage, with 4 of your best friends in the entire world, all just throwing down songs and vibing off each other is a feeling I cannot describe. The crowd honestly shook me haha, I couldn’t believe how many lost dogz shirts I saw in the crowd, people had totems of dogs, it was just a really cool experience I hope to get to experience again. Shout out to The Untz and their whole team, honestly that was a beautiful festival, camping wise it was the best one I’ve been to.

What other labels or collectives do you look up to right now besides your own?

Definitely Courteous Fam, all those guys inspired all of us Lost Dogz, Below the Surface are the homies and I love those guys, shout out Jerremy and Bernard, Dont Die At Work is always dropping fire as well.

If you had the opportunity to work with one non-electronic artist on a track, who would it be?

Does Tennyson count? Probably not, U would say MF Doom or Earl Sweatshirt, for sure.

What are you most looking forward to for the rest of 2019?

Well I have a bunch of unreleased, that you will hear in the mix, that I’m going to be putting in an EP by the end of this year, I have a sample pack dropping the beginning of July, it’s gonna be a huge pack with over 350 samples, definitely the best pack of mine to date so make sure you cop it, and honestly hoping to get booked for some more shows and festivals

Where do you see Lost Dogz this same time next year?

I see us where we are now, just having fun, telling jokes, making dope ass music, playing shows together and having fun with each other, we may have a bigger following by then, and I’m really excited for what the future holds.
