When it comes to Aussie electronic music exports, few are finer than What So Not & Slumberjack. Both emerged on the scene almost a decade ago when electronic trap was at its peak in popularity. While their styles evolved over the years, its seems they haven’t forgotten their roots with the release of a masterful trap anthem entitled ‘Uh Uh.’ The single is everything we’ve been missing (and are finally starting to see re-emerge). Infectious vocal chops and uplifting chants give the track swells of emotion and humanize it without the need for a topline or hook. The chords are off-kilter and adventurous. There are swords clashing. The percussion pounds, driving the entire track. There’s an underlying tribal influence that provides a rich cinematic aesthetic. ‘Uh Uh’ sees the veteran producers’ styles collide for a banger that is near perfect. This is what the world needs more of in 2023.

Morgan (& later 1/2 Slumberjack; Fletcher, stranded in Sydney) & I went about channeling our inner 2012; giant characterised drums, chopped & bent vocal cuts & some emotional & wonky chords. We pretty much had the whole thing done in one afternoon & here is what it sounds like! – What So Not

Stream ‘Uh Uh’ below and everywhere via Jadu Dala.

Last year we claimed r/trap’s BOOST TAPE 01 was the pinnacle of trap. A bar set immensely high by impeccable curation and the mix of legends and rising stars involved. With their follow-up BOOST TAPE 02 the expectations couldn’t be much higher, but I can assure you it delivers. 28 tracks of relentless heat from the likes of Acrillics, camoufly, Chee, Chromonicci, Dabow, Deffie, episcool, Giraffage, Great Dane, Ivy Lab, LYNY, Machine Drum, MadBliss x Keeth, Oakk, Rome In Silver, Salva, Slumberjack x Ren Zukii, and somehow more. Once again the Boost Gang brings us some of the best trap, bass and club music that we’re destined to receive this year. From front to back the compilation slaps but we had to highlight a few of our favourites.

Kicking off the project comes Acrillics’ ‘What Do You Want.’ It’s no secret we’ve been longtime fans and supporters and it’s always great to see the duo making big moves. Serving as a perfect introduction, it starts as a slow burner with emotive undertones before unveiling a bass-leaning trap nature. Blending feels with aggressive and powerful energy makes this a can’t miss.

Chromonicci has become renowned for his diversity, from future beat finesse to lofi chill tunes and trap slaps, he can do it all. With ‘Singularity’ he finds a perfect fusion of off-kilter future beats and the chest-pounding energy of raw trap. It’s smooth yet, banging. Experimental but approachable and dare I say… smooth. In short, it’s spectacular.

The stash of unreleased heat that Dabow is sitting on right now is absolutely insane. Any time we get one of his highly sought-after IDs for release we relish it. ‘Poder’ has been a staple in Dabow sets and mixes so it’s great to finally get the proper release. From the bent vocal loops, to ice-cold keys and the blistering brass, this is trap music at its best. People really need to stop sleeping on Dabow’s greatness.

Possibly the biggest surprise on the tape is Giraffage’s’ ‘idgaf.’ Based around the vocal “I don’t give a fuck,” this is a blistering banger here to set speakers ablaze. Booming bass, precise vocals chops, and an almost absurd party vibe make it undeniably infectious. It’s the type of banger you could see getting spun out in trap or bass house sets or serving as the perfect bridge between the genres in a setlist. I didn’t know Giraffage went this hard.

Other mid-to-late tape standouts include Great Dane’s ‘aya hua’ which fuses tribal and spiritual energy with some serious bump, LYNY’s bossed-up anthem ‘Stumble,’ and RamonPang’s beastly ‘Santoor Unkown.’

Last but not least I have to highlight Rome In Silver’s ‘Little Demons.’ I’ve been waiting for this one to drop since I included it as an ID in my Electric Hawk Takover Mix in early 2020. Electric basslines, swooning vocals, crisp claps and a forward-thinking soundscape are expertly intertwined. The drops are funky and inviting while remaining mean. It exemplifies the exceptional balance that Rome In Silver has managed to master.

BOOST TAPE 02 is everything you wanted and more. Stream the full project below and be sure to grab it on Bandcamp.

The devastation of the Australian wildfires has been widely reported over the last several weeks. From the staggering number of animals succumbing to the fires, to the people affected and homes destroyed, it’s been an absolute disaster. In an effort to help those affected, five of Perth’s finest producers have banded together to create a benefit record aptly titled ‘INFERNO.’ “We live in such an incredible country and it’s really upsetting to see it burning away. We’re sending our love and support from West Australia but know that money is desperately needed,” Fletcher of SLUMBERJACK states.

The track sees Slumberjack, ShockOne, Twerl, HWLS & Loston coming together for a work that’s nothing short of epic. “There is so much emotion in the song and that’s exactly what we wanted the listeners to feel, how much emotion there is in our country right now over what’s happening,” Twerl explains. He’s certainly not overselling it. ‘INFERNO’ is one of most moving and impactful electronic records in recent time. Leveraging samples from news coverage, the track reminds listeners of the intense reality being faced in Australia right now. Add in haunting vocal bends, somber undertones and intense drums and the intro is gripping. The drops hit hard, powerful enough to go off at a festival or club, but packing so much more within them. Poignant and powerful, ‘INFERNO’ is a political statement, a work of art, and a great way to help a country in need.

How does a collab this massive come together? “Well originally Scott (Loston) had a benefit show planned in Perth, where a bunch of creatives were going to come together for a show to raise as much awareness and money as possible but unfortunately it couldn’t go ahead. So I thought, why don’t we all get in the studio for a giant collab to raise some money? So that’s exactly what we did. Scott also did some amazing artwork and made a fkn dope shirt that will be available to purchase too, all profits for that will be donated.” Twerl tells us. He expanded upon the charitable efforts saying, “Proceeds will be going to Red Cross Australia. They were chosen because they are a reputable charity organisation who’ve operated over 100 years in Australia. On the Bandcamp $2 will get you two versions of ‘INFERNO,’ but you can actually donate as much as you want. Any little bit helps! We thank everyone in advance for your support in such hard times, it means a lot to a lot of people.”

Stream ‘INFERNO’ below and donate to download and grab the merch here. If you’re looking to donate further, head over to the Australian Red Cross. Australians tend to loosely use the term legend, but Slumberjack, ShockOne, Twerl, HWLS & Loston are bloody legends for this one in the truest sense.

Slumberjack, an extremely versatile production duo hailing from Australia, have been making waves in the music world since 2014. Made up of members Morgan Then and Fletcher Ehlers, this group is a perfect example of two people with different musical skills coming together to create something special. Then is a classically trained concert pianist, and Ehlers has been making electronic music since the age of 11. Both bring their own individual styles to the table, allowing for a pleasing harmonic convergence. Their self-titled debut EP earned them the #2 spot on the iTunes electronic charts, garnering them both an audience to showcase their growth to, and the resources in order to expand on their already existing sound. With 2017 came their 2nd EP Fracture, released through Mad Decent, which to date has earned them almost 2 million plays on SoundCloud. With a solid framework to build upon, 2019’s Sarawak is a statement of just how far these two have come.

Sarawak opens with ‘Daggers,’ a collab with fellow Aussie experimental rock group Machine Age, which features emotional, powerful vocals from the groups vocalist. A guitar is featured in the drops, a pleasant addition that helps to highlight both parties involved. Next on the EP comes ‘Athena,’ which has a very progressive-trap feel. This has much more traditional styling influences compared to ‘Daggers’. The apex of the first drop is very satisfying, with an upbeat energy to it. The 2nd drop adds more of a future bass overture while still maintaining the familiar undertones from the first, which allows the listener to have new levels of depth and keeps the fluidity of the piece. ‘Hide and Seek’ is a more emotional-leaning song, with lovely female vocals and a chill trap aesthetic that leaves one feeling relaxed. The last 2 songs on the EP are collabs with trap heavyweights TroyBoi and Ekali. ‘Solid’ carries Troyboi’s signature sound with his thick basslines and use of foreign string instruments. It makes for a very adventurous, exciting beat. ‘Closure’ is a fitting closer to the body of work, featuring impressive sound design from Ekali and Slumberjack. The first drop has a satisfying kick but still maintains a relaxed atmosphere, while the second really rounds the 1st, really bringing out the full fledged sound that they were going for.

The 3 collabs in this EP highlight the individual strengths of the artists, without having any stylistically overpower another. Overall, Sarawak is a very diverse EP that is a joy to listen to.

Isn’t it amazing when artists announce something is coming soon without creating months of hype around it? Just last week, SLUMBERJACK tweeted that their collaboration with TroyBoi was available for pre-save, and when a track is more than just good enough, the number of streams will let it speak for itself, requiring no additional hype. This announcement incited speculation among fans as to what this trap banger would sound like, as teasers were scarce. One thing was for certain, though, and that was that a collision between the British and Australian kings of trap was bound to be a heater.

Today, the short-lived anticipation comes to an end with the release of ‘Solid’ on Monstercat. The trap lords start us off with their distinctive percussion and an eerie melody, setting the stage for the banger that follows. Wasting no time, ‘Solid’ flips into an insanely catchy yet still wonky bop that will surely tickle all your senses. The combination of heavy basses with gritty synths and minutely-timed vocal samples will get any bass enthusiast sweating and craving more. After continuing to play with frequencies and sound-panning in the break, ‘Solid’ drops into a similarly heavy second drop, with an added touch of emotion. Don’t miss it below.

Australian-born duo SLUMBERJACK and Vancouver’s Ekali have both woven their influence into the trap and bass scene in the past 4 years. Garnering opportunities to work with talented icons such as Porter Robinson, with their riveting take of ‘Fellow Feeling’ on the coveted Worlds EP, Morgan & Fletcher have demonstrated an uncanny ability to blend the line between trap and future bass. Ekali first took the future beats genre by storm with an exceptionally sophisticated remix of ‘Smoke & Retribution’ from Flume’s famed SKIN EP featuring vocals from Vince Staples and Kučka and has released nothing short of excellence since then.

Lacking zero qualifications, the 3 paired up last week for a ridiculously ornate single titled ‘Helios’, which is a brilliant illustration of two styles coming together with glorious synonymity, better than anything I could’ve possibly fathomed on my own.

The track begins with a soothing buildup with gentle chanting vocals in the backdrop, which at first seem to start at a distance, but gradually draw closer as the strings and drums heighten the energy of the song. Suddenly, a riser is introduced as the pace of the drums quickens and before you know what hits you, an exquisitely timed break launches you into the gut-wrenching first drop. By contrasting the dark, deep synth melody with a relentless shower of growling trap noises the trio managed to preserve the melodious essence of SLUMBERJACK’s style while beautifully accentuating the meticulous nature of Ekali’s sound design. A more distinguished, hopeful melody returns, briefly soothing the vibe before an unsuspecting barrage of belt-fed machine gun samples propel you into the second drop. The journey ends with an air of optimism as the yearning string melody brings the tune to a close.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/474397104″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

After being completely baffled by the original, we were thrilled to see an edit originating from budding Australian trap producer, Yvng Jalapeño. As his name insinuates, Jordan has been cheffing up spicy beats in the Land Down Under for nearly 3 years and has recently made waves with an absolutely disgusting remix of the track ‘Interstellar’ from the ATLien’s Invasion EP.

With an ingenious eye for combination, Jordan leverages the lavish chorus from RL Grime’s tune ‘Wanna Know’ featuring vocals from Daya to illustrate his interpretation of the most recent masterpiece ‘Helios’ from Ekali & SLUMBERJACK.

The edit begins with the same heartwarming melody as the original, which sets the stage for Daya’s sumptuous vocals, which gently trickle in around the 0:10 mark. When I first heard the track, I had to double take to make sure I wasn’t playing two tracks simultaneously because the chorus flowed SO seamlessly with the original. The initial buildup furnishes the first opportunity for Jordan to tease his signature filthy trap style into the track as the vocals from RL’s track slowly fade out. Permeated with tight metallic drums, the drop takes the song into an entirely new direction, while leaving just the perfect amount of remnants from the original synth pattern to keep you hooked. The vocals flawlessly rejoin the melody, which steadily builds into a gripping second drop, reintroducing Jalapeño’s high pitched trap rhythm interwoven with the harmony of the original track.

“Really loved the original & had some ideas in my head while listening. I wasn’t originally going to keep the ‘RL Grime – I Wanna Know’ vocal in this but it fits really well, so I left it in as this is only an edit” Jordan discloses with his fans on SoundCloud. Even despite his ambiguity, we couldn’t be more pleased with the result of his efforts and personally feel that the vocals do a terrific job of enhancing an already spectacular original.
