Despite making a name for himself outside of the drum and bass world, Kumarion has quickly evolved into a drum and bass heavy-hitter while continuing to make waves across various realms of the electronic music scene. In parallel, Smoakland have championed a distinct sound that harnesses the energy of old school dubstep, while simultaneously harvesting a drum and bass facet with their Liquid Smoak side project.

Following a joint tour that kicked off in late March, Kumarion and Smoakland now join forces on the three-track High Rollers EP, released via the coveted Deadbeats. A powerful, adrenaline-fueled release that’s guaranteed to captivate dance music fans, High Rollers features three sonically different tracks that encompass a range of styles and that come together nicely into one cohesive project. ‘Worth All The Wait’ featuring jELACEE is a smooth liquid jam that uses soothing vocals to complement the light-hearted nature of the track. Kumarion and Smoakland venture into jungle territory with the project’s titled track, ‘High Rollers,’ peppering the project with more energy than its opener and further showcasing their technical skills. Finally, ‘Fluxuations’ lends a halftime hand to the lively project, as the artists slow down the tempo but not the intensity.

Don’t miss the High Rollers EP below.

Concocting an exceptionally experimental and splendidly spooky audible aesthetic from the very beginning of their production career, Shanghai Doom have carved out their own welcome niche into the electronic music ecosystem. With ridiculous releases on a wide variety of prominent progressive labels like Wakaan, Bassrush, Wormhole Music Group, and more, along with being the 34th installment of our guest mix + interview series, they’ve consistently shown that they can captivate a far-reaching spectrum of bass music aficionados. Now, they’ve teamed up with a mighty menagerie of terrific talent to meld their creative efforts into the Collision EP, a 4-track hair-raising romp through all things deep and dirty out on the longstanding dub dealer Protohype‘s Underdog Records label, and we’ve had the great pleasure of premiering their collab with the sensational Smoakland boys ‘Time Warp’.

Flaunting some of the thicccest wubs in all the land, Smoakland’s trademarked style blends effortlessly with the foreboding soundscapes that Shanghai Doom are veritable mastercraftsmen of. Immediately greeting listeners with robust undulations that swiftly devolve into blissful speaker purrs, there’s really no time to strap-in and mentally prepare for the rich evil that one will endure. Dubious vocal chops that sound straight out of a horror movie invade your consciousness, bringing on all sorts of devilish thoughts that would seem extreme in any normal circumstance. Equal parts music, seance, and satanic ritual, hitting “skip” might be the best move around small children, unless, of course, you’re trying to indoctrinate them into the unholy church of malevolent wubs. Tight, immaculate mixing makes this track a true treat on the ears, while also straight diabolical energy for the soul. Man, does it feel good to be evil. Check out ‘Time Warp’ for yourself below!

Standing out as easily one of the most forward-thinking acts in the underground bass community, the dynamic duo of Smoakland have quickly separated themselves from the fold with their truly distinct speaker-flexing imprint and diverse array of hi-fi noise. They’ve consistently been one of our favorite acts to work with regularly in the past year, and they’ve showed no signs of slowing down by teaming up with Paris, France’s Eradikid for their latest release. Quickly rising out of the depths of the underground, Eradikid has had some of the hottest low-key bangers of the year with ‘Ranfla‘ and ‘Sell Money‘, both supremely showcasing a sound that is deserving of ten times the streams they’ve currently received. Looking for something to bop around to while feeling like a true digital gangster? Let Smoakland and Eradikid take the aux because ‘Old School’ is the one true answer.

Immediately gripped by the sparking electricity exuded by ‘Old School,’ your body will be coated in true ego-fulfilling currents. Coupled with a humongous adrenaline shot of pure carnal energy, you’ll be sent straight into a frenzy, capable of anything and everything, and inhibited by absolutely nothing. Sporting one of the wildest builds in recent memory, listeners will be instantly enraptured and lifted from their seats, feet fiercely flailing to the beat. A rare, yet wonderful, feat in the audio world today is having overtly aggressive tunes with make systems purr rather than rattle, and boy do these boys have that down-pat. Newton’s first law states “An object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an outside force,” so put this bad boy on repeat, get jiggy with it, and keep all those negative vibes outside your bubble of comfort. Check out ‘Old School’ for yourself below and grab the free download.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 6 months, you’ve heard the names Smoakland and SuperAve floated feverishly around the bass music realms, excitement and childhood glee twinkling in the eyes of all that mention their names. With an emphasis on bone-crushing low-end and stylistically bouncy creations that make your body vibrate viciously at a subatomic level, these youthful artists still early into their production careers have already made a firm claim at being some of the most impressive up-and-comers in the entire industry. Now, Smoakland has taken all their accumulated experience and growth and wrapped it all up into their debut Modern Throwback LP, a 10 track thoroughfare of absolutely monumental proportions out on The Gradient Perspective. The third track in this immaculate body of work is ‘No Good’ with SuperAve, and we’ve had the great pleasure of premiering it right here on FUXWITHIT.

If there ever was a polar opposite title for a track, it’s definitely ‘No Good.’ Proudly displaying sound design that delicately romps through your ear canals while simultaneously pulling no punches, you’ll be left in a state of complete euphoria, bliss being the only thing your consciousness will be able to comprehend. If you’ve ever wondered what taking a bath in sound waves feels like, put this bad boy on and soak up the vibrations as they pour over your entire existence to your heart’s content. The vocals of “You’re no good for me, I don’t need nobody” courtesy of Prodigy’s ‘No Good’ are sprinkled throughout the piece and dance around your headphones courtesy of the ridiculous panning included within, a testament to the immense quality of this piece and the progress both parties have had in their individual journeys. If you want a track that will elevate your mood so sharply that you’re left compelled to bop around your house like your life depended on it, this is that track. You’ll be left feeling like a “strong, independent woman that don’t need no man”, or you might even throw on ‘All The Single Ladies’ next, who knows.

‘No Good’ is just one tenth of Modern Throwback, and if you were wondering, the entire rest of the album is of the utmost quality as well. Sporting eclectic bangers like ‘1975’, which rightly sports a Led Zeppelin intro, ‘Wooly’, a sexy groovefest of grime featuring the ever-impressive Molokai, a massive DNB banger in the form of ‘God’s Gift’, and the excessively saucy ‘Set You Free,’ this body of work is nothing to be trifled with, and is assuredly deserving of a full rinse in order from start to finish. All aboard the hype train ya’ll, these boys have a one-way express ticket to the top, and this is only the beginning of the adventure. Smoakland have been one of our favorite groups here at FUXWITHIT for some time now, and the success that they’ve had in such a short amount of time is incredible and wholeheartedly deserved. We’re avidly excited to see what the future of the group beholds, but for now, check out ‘No Good’ and the rest of the Modern Throwback LP for yourself below!

Out of the throng of fiery west coast bass acts rises a dynamic duo fiercely pushing the envelope of sound design as we know it. Harrison Hays and Anthony Battaglia, better known by their collaborative project name Smoakland, have been bending sonic frequencies like diabolical mad scientists as of late. Curating a rich, diverse discography freshly into their musical journey has afforded them to hit a broad range of genres and moods all within a quite short span of time, making every performance of theirs a true roller-coaster experience. Mixing an old-school classic sound with a supremely progressive approach, they’ve successfully carved out their own niche for fans’ ears.

Now, primed and ready to dominate festival season in true fashion, we’ve gotten a sneak peek at their upcoming Modern Throwback LP and plenty of saucy live edits in the 96th edition of our guest mix series. We’ve also had the privilege of speaking to them about their journey so far, their inspirations, and what’s coming next. Check out the full interview and guest mix for yourself below!

What is Smoakland?

Smoakland (Harry & Anthony) is two best friends who randomly decided to start making music together.

Tell us a little about your collective musical backgrounds.

Anthony started making mashups back in high school for fun, and slowly after college started to produce originals. Harry started DJing in 2011, and continued to do so until 2018 when Anthony started teaching him to produce.

How did you guys originally meet?

We met in College at Boise State back in 2011.

What’s the collaborative process like for you two?

Anthony is the backbone behind the production. Usually Anthony will send over his ideas, Harry will add to them if he sees fit, given the song. There’s a lot of back and forth discussion on arrangement of song, etc. it usually doesn’t take more than 2-3 communication periods for a song to be made. We work very fast.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

We both have a heavy hip hop influence. A lot of rap, rap vocals. We draw inspiration from people like Zeds Dead if we are talking electronic.

We like to keep our sound current, yet have that throwback feel to it. We don’t want to be confined to just one genre. We love to put our classic style over anything that catches our ears.

You guys have already produced quite a few different genres, how would you describe your overall sound?

We like to keep our sound current, yet have that throwback feel to it. We don’t want to be confined to just one genre. We love to put our classic style over anything that catches our ears.

You did a guest mix for us today! Can you tell us the direction you took with it and how you crafted the overall flow?

We wanted to display a couple of songs coming out on our Modern Throwback LP that drops 4/6. We also spun a lot of tunes we’ve been playing the past 2 months that have really stood out to us. A bunch of favorites!!

We want to keep that old school dubstep feel, while also bring a whole new style of sound design to the game.

You guys are traveling around on your own Modern Throwback tour this summer! Can you tell us the significance of the name, and what people should expect when they check it out?

We use that name because we love keeping the nostalgia flowing! We want to keep that old school dubstep feel, while also bring a whole new style of sound design to the game. If you come to a stop on our tour, expect a lot of older dubstep songs, mixed in with a plethora of new and unreleased from friends. We want to take you on a dubstep journey!!

Tell us about your upcoming album!

There’s 10 songs. 3 collabs, and 7 done just by us. We’ve been working on it for the past 7 months collectively. This is our greatest body of work from start to finish, and it really displays our range. From dnb, to halftime, to old school dub. We even have a rapper coming through to spit vocals! We are covering all aspects.

Talk to us about the new collective Left Coast Xtracts. Who’s a part of it? What’s the direction that’s being taken with it?

LCX started off as a side project with our buddy Jeff Matthews (LABS). We wanted to make more subtle dubstep with a softer approach. After our first release, I had an idea. What if we did this for other artists? Give them a platform to display their music. I’m also tired of some labels releasing great songs, and then not so great songs. We want every song we release to be a hit, to where you can’t stop coming back to listen to it. Quality music all around.

You guys have your own guest mix series in the form of Dope Tracks for Bass Cats! Can you tell us what the inspiration was behind that, and the direction you’re planning to take with it in the future?

That also started as an idea for us to release a mix every few weeks to keep our sounds updated. Then it turned into guest appearances from our favorite underground artists. We hope to continue the mix series, and keep on putting our quality tunes from all of our favorite producers we feel deserve the recognition.

Whenever someone tells us our music has made a difference in their life, or just seeing how hype people get at our shows. It’s infectious. We never want to stop what we’re doing.

What keeps you guys motivated to put in work day-in and day-out?

The sense of accomplishment. Whenever someone tells us our music has made a difference in their life, or just seeing how hype people get at our shows. It’s infectious. We never want to stop what we’re doing.

What do you believe has been the biggest factor in your success up to this point in your careers?

Being unapologetically us. Every move we’ve ever made, has been for the best of Smoakland. We leave our egos out of it, and always do what’s best for the music.

Who do you believe are some of the most forward-thinking underground acts in the scene right now?

Vibe Emissions has been killing it lately. Dudes been on another level of production. Also SuperAve. Is just starting out and he’s already in a league of his own. Also, watch out for LABS because the dude is gonna have a massive year in 2020.

Where are you guys most excited to play this summer?

Lightning in a Bottle for sure. That’s been a festival I’ve only ever dreamed of playing. Also TheUntz is going to be very special for us.

Two of the heaviest hitters in the underground bass community, Smoakland and SuperAve, have been steadily wheeling-and-dealing successful banger after successful banger on their own individual campaigns of auditory decimation. SuperAve’s first upload on SoundCloud was a mere 8 months ago, but they’ve already earned support from the Legends Zeds Dead among others, along with recently being the 87th installment in our guest mix series here on FUXWITHIT. Smoakland had a tremendous 2019 run, and in 2020 they already have major festival bookings, an album coming in April, and a guest mix planned with us for a not-so-distant release. Pooling their collective momentum and unique styles to max capabilities, they’ve blessed fans’ ears with their latest release ‘Telegraph’, released on the legendary Saturate Records, and we’ve had the great pleasure of premiering this sonic warfare device here on FUXWITHIT.

‘Telegraph’ is one of those collaborations that works so well you hope the contributing artists have a dual EP coming soon. Combining the speaker purr-inducing bass lines from Smoakland with the wobblier elements of SuperAve creates a listening experience that’s truly unique and exceedingly progressive. This is a perfect fit for a release on Saturate, as they’ve been one of the most forward-thinking labels in the game for years now. The first drop commands your attention, with a melody so powerful it feels like you’re receiving an organ sermon in the church of bass. “Psalm 420, thou shalt get down to these divine beats.” The switch-ups are immensely lively, bringing out only the most wild of dance moves from anyone within ear shot. The final drop is bursting with energy, and viciously slams your head back and forth in true rag-doll form, with zero regard for human life.

If this track is any sign of what’s to come from these two maestros of the underground, 2020 better strap in, because it’s going to be one hell of a ride. Check out ‘Telegraph’ for yourself below, and grab a free download here!

Members of the illustrious and progressive west coast bass movement Harrison Hays and Anthony Battaglia, also known by their dual production moniker Smoakland, along with Tennessee native Bryce Herlong, or Vibe Emissions, have come together to produce a wubby wonderland of auditory delight. Putting a new age bass-centric twist on the timeless 1962 classic ‘Somebody Have Mercy’ by Sam Cooke, these dealers of deep, heavy frequencies have joined past and present hand-in-hand.

The initial aspect you’ll notice of ‘Have Mercy’ within the opening seconds is the sense of a dark mysterious force quickly approaching. The tone of the piece is quite serious, drawing you in with hollow, faded out notes accentuated impeccably by crispy snares. The predrop vocals bring in Sam Cooke, asking longingly “will somebody have mercy?” Sorry to break it to you Sam, but mercy will surely not be coming anytime soon from these two groups. The wubs are thick, full-bodied, and plentiful; a veritable all-you-can-gyrate buffet. Featuring immaculate mixing across the board, each sound feels individual yet part of the bigger whole, nothing taking up more space or attention than another. Need a workout for your sound system? Throw this bad boy on and watch your speakers flex so hard it looks like they’re going through the ringer with a personal trainer, assuredly squealing “have mercy” in response.

Both Smoakland and Vibe Emissions have shown consistently throughout the course of the year that their sound is here to stay and will only continue to get more sharp, polished, and creative. For fans of all the forward-thinking players in the bass music realm, this are two groups to keep a very close eye on for the foreseeable future. For now, check out ‘Have Mercy’ for yourself below!

Bay area boys Anthony Battaglia and Harrison Hays, better known by their duo production moniker Smoakland, and North Carolina native Houstan Harrelson, aka Houman, have been individually flexing sound systems to max capabilities as of late. Incorporating bass lines thicker than a bowl of oatmeal and vibrations that don’t bang, but rather drip gangster swag, these guys are a force to be reckoned with in the sound design game. Today, they’ve created a vat of their collective creative juices, to mold a concoction that will take you straight to the dome.

‘Blunted’ is an intoxicant of the highest degree, eliciting an ego-boosting sense of fulfillment. From the opening beats, the overwhelming sense of style and immaculate aesthetic is readily apparent, making even the most conservative of listeners drop it all the way to the floor. Right before the first crashing of immensely thick bass, the pre-drop vocals of “soon as you start sleeping, catching you off guard” grace your ears, and if you weren’t firmly holding onto something, you might just get swept away. Prime bumping material, this is a song that deserves nothing but the highest quality of sound systems for pristine rinsing. The saying “music is the drug” is a snug fit for this piece, as you can practically feel your entire state of being elevate to a higher plane of consciousness.

Rich, full-bodied, and intricate are all perfect descriptors of what these 2 impressive groups have put together. With no signs of slowing down anytime soon, Smoakland and Houman are experimental artists that will continue to bleep on even the most tight-knit of radars. For now, make sure to keep ‘Blunted’ in your constant rotation, and check it out for yourself below!

British Columbia’s John Mitchell is no stranger to the dark eclectic periphery of experimental bass. Diligently polishing the scope of his production caliber under the guise just john for the past 3 years, Mitchell possesses an enigmatic capacity for conceiving tactful soundscapes, utilizing minimal percussion and cogent wobbles as depicted in standalone singles such as ‘This’ or ‘God Damn’.

Cut from the catalog of Perfect Number, Mitchell’s debut SpicyBois EP, ‘Darkness’ presents an opportunity for the styles of just john & smoakland to synthesize as one. “We share a similar vision and proclivity for experimental bass, and I think our styles both really shine through on this track,” Mitchell reflects on working with the Bay Area duo.

Hypnotic echoing lays the foundation for the track, weaving mesmerizing energy as it begins to unfold. A precipitous rush dissipates the melody briefly as a fleeting vocal sample thrusts the track into a rhythmic sequence of wobbles. Crisp beat breaks reveal hidden fringes of resonating frequencies and digitized mixdowns within entrancing energy soundscape of the track before a final momentous reprise imparts a final eruption of turbulent bass.

‘Darkness’ is an immaculate personification of just john’s virtuous production craft and boundless creative dexterity. Demonstrating Mitchell’s uncanny ability to work cohesively with other styles, the track depicts remarkable depth and a riveting flow that cunningly foreshadows the acuity that permeates the entire Perfect Number EP.
