The holiday season is in full swing! While December often acts as a time for things to slow down in the music industry, So Sus has taken the opportunity to bless fans with a dozen fresh flips. Labeled 12 Days of Flipmas, the artist has been unveiling a fresh bootleg each day since the start of the month. The pack sees their wide-ranging signature style applied across a myriad of sounds, styles, and artists. From remixes of Whipped Cream, capshun, RL Grime and Juelz, IMANU, and Flume, to surprising reimaginations of Reba McIntire and Kylie Minogue. I didn’t know that I needed a bass-heavy flip of ‘I’m A Survivor’ but now that we have it, I don’t ever want to be without it. There are too many gems to explore each one individually so just press play and enjoy each for the special treat that is.

2022 has been yet another impressive year for So Sus. The Vancouver-based producer released the incredible single ‘Derealization’ on our label, played his Toronto debut at Deadbeats, killed it at Shambhala, and so much more. Capping off things with a bang comes his Melancholia EP on Circus Electric. The project showcases his artistic evolution, finding the perfect development of his signature sound.

Over the course of four tracks, the producer gives listeners a piece of his heart. It’s an emotionally moving epic that doesn’t lack the punch we’ve come to expect from So Sus. ‘Don’t Forget Me’ alongside Sejo sets the tone for the project opening with a hauntingly beautiful aesthetic that is carried through. It feels like memories slowly drifting from the unconscious mind into the forefront before enveloping into a tidal wave of emotion. On ‘Puppet’ TetraTara’s dark vocals create an alluring but unsettling aura that is matched by the track’s powerful backing. The vocalist returns once again on ‘Attachment Theory’ showcasing the pair’s chemistry and balancing against the more triumphant drops. Saving the best for last comes ‘Truth & Deception.’ Serving as the grande finale, it exhibits the same sonic palette as the rest of Melancholia while feeling more commanding. It’s gloomy, menacing, and draped in mystique. Yet it still embodies an air of beauty.

So Sus’ ‘Melancholia’ mixes wave, trap, and bass for an intoxicating journey that deserves repeat listens. Dive in below.

Vancouver-based producer So Sus has been on a consistent ascent from the underground over the past few years. His debut EP Voices was nominated for Dance Recording of the Year at The Juno Awards and he’s released on a myriad of top-tier labels including Deadbeats, Monstercat, Bitbird, Circus, Jadu Dala, Alter/Ego, and more. Making his debut on FUXWITHIT Records comes ‘Derealization.’ The track is a three and half minute epic that fuses his loves for trap and wave.

Haunting vocal bends lure listeners in and add a distinct layer of emotion throughout. The synths are futuristic and triumphant, elevating the listening experience to new heights. The drops are chest-pounding and dizzying in all the right ways. Embodying a disconnect from reality, it’s beautiful, dark, moving, and intense. ‘Derealization’ blurs the boundaries between trap and wave, creating a truly one-of-a-kind auditory thrill ride. So Sus proceeds to get better with each release.

Derealization is when you feel detached from your surroundings. When things don’t feel real. It’s something that I’ve experienced from time to time. This disjointed feeling from things around you. I make tracks a lot of time that describes my mental state and for me, it’s a sort of therapy.

bitbird‘s community as a whole has always shown true heart and passion for the arts. From their extremely talented roster of artists to their listeners, everyone has a part to play. And it’s thanks to their whole movement they’ve become such a powerful force within the industry. Always innovating and evolving with their members. create together vol. 3 not only honors their whole group but also showcases a bright future for their label and upcoming artists. Changing the game once again with brand new talent, techniques, and sound. Creating a peaceful and mystical home for all to discover and call their own.

Inspired by their signature motto, ‘create forever,’ the label’s fans took the step of creating the bitbird discord channel where all are welcome to connect with each other creatively and spiritually. It was then in 2019, the community started to promote the ‘create together month.’ A one-month challenge where young up-and-coming artists worked together as one to inspire and push each other to evolve. After sending what they’ve created to the bitbird label, ‘create together vol. 1’ was born. From then on, they’ve managed to continue the series where more and more musicians rose to the challenge. Putting themselves on the map while empowering others to do the same. From having only 10 tracks from vol. 1, to a grand number of 25 tracks created by 41 artists on today’s vol. 3, it’s truly inspiring and heartfelt to see and hear how much everyone has grown.

Just like the other compilations, the birth of ‘create together vol. 3’ was held in their discord channel. The activities consisted of a full schedule of masterclasses hosted by the bitbird alumni. Artists such as San Holo, Pauline Herr, Tails, and Dot all participated to share their own knowledge and experiences to inspire the upcoming legends. Even Hein Hammers (previously a part of DROELOE) did a class on visual art creation! With the support of Twitch, Ableton, FL Studio, Auto-Tune, iZotope, and more, they provided everyone with educational resources and discounts on software and hardware. Making the process even more enriching and fulfilling to participate in.

“It’s incredible to see how every year the community pushes itself further and shows what it’s capable of. Even more than previous years, we have seen collaborations pop up! This shows again how music even in such a polarising world is able to connect people! Music is love, and we love music. create together.” – Thorwald van den Akker, bitbird’s creative director

create together vol. 3 is filled with non-stop action, emotion, and happiness. Bringing incredible atmospheres, peaceful melodies, and groovy rhythms to your ears. Gracefully dancing around your hearts and souls while leaving a sense of fulfillment to the highest degree. Powerful drums creations, cinematic environments, and of course some far-out sound design are what you’ll find within. Taking listeners by the hand and opening the eyes of many to what’s to come from these brand new and passionate souls. Artists such as THREESIXTY, Scro, and Alva Gracia make a stunning debut with the team with their star-striking pieces. While returning musicians such as So Sus, Byegone, and more continue to nurture your hearts thanks to innovative abilities and visions within their arrangements.

All in all, it’s a journey worth experiencing for yourself no matter where you are. Inspiring many to continue to create and to be themselves. So make sure to go show your support by streaming create together vol. 3 everywhere via bitbird!

The Boost Gang is back with the third installment of their Boost Tape series. We described the first edition as the pinnacle of trap and characterized the second as top tier. To say the bar has been set rather high would be an understatement but I am happy to report that they have once again delivered. The latest edition features another star-studded lineup that includes DJ Ride, GANZ, JWLS, Losco x golden child, Floret Loret, anti., episcool, Jon1st, Rohaan, Luminox, So Sus, HUCCI, and more! With over 20 tracks there’s simply too much heat to dive into detail on every track but we’ve opted to highlight some of our favourites.

anti. is one of the most underrated producers in trap right now and ‘FLEX’ serves as another reminder he’s next up. The track perfectly balances OG trap tendencies with a heavier bass vibe for a certified banger. ‘SAFEWITHME’ jumped out among the first section with the track proving to be one of Farrah most impressive releases to date. The bounce is immaculate, mixing booming low end with futuristic and mean club energy.

Anytime HUCCI drops it’s a treat and ‘Low Charge 6000’ is no exception. When it comes to making moody trap beats, there’s still no one better.

If you’re looking for some DnB the tape also has you covered. Jon1st’s ‘Step Up’ takes iconic rap vocals and creates a menacing off-kilter bruiser. Drawing on a similar dark energy, Rohaan unveils the monster that is ‘Sabertooth.’ This one takes you down dark alleys and into questionable dank basements for a raw rave aesthetic.

FUXWITHIT favourites Losco & golden child team up for the trap banger you’d expect from the two. The track finds that perfect balance between cartooney fun and brutish street sound. Another FUXWITHIT mainstay So Sus amazes with ‘Whale Song’ a track that draws from nature to create an epic sonic journey.

Anytime I explore a compilation I am hoping to find at least one or two new artists that truly wow me. So Durand and WERK checked that box with two of the most impressive offerings on the project. So Durand’s ‘Do2me (feat. Sacha Foster)’ is nothing short of an anthem. The emotive and catchy vocals lock listeners in while drops absolutely bang. Meanwhile, on ‘GEDDIT’ WERK bring a TNGHT-inspired sound that is nothing short of masterful. Warning: you may want to sell your soul to the devil just to ‘GEDDIT.’

TL;DR: Boost Tape 03 is one of the hardest compilations of the year to no one’s surprise. Listen below and grab it on Bandcamp. All proceeds go to MusiCares.

There’s no doubt that Partica is a collective that snatched our hearts ever since they came onto the scene. When everyone said that trap was outdated, the supergroup and record label pushed on, giving a platform to some of the best producers in the underground bass scene. For Halloween, they did something super special and brought together 23 incredible artists for a mega collab called ‘FRANKENSTEIN’ and everyone in the scene should give it a listen.

I imagine it’s super difficult to bring TWENTY-THREE artists together to finish a track. They got Dabow, capshun, So Sus, and episcool, to name a few. Even label heads Gurf and Runnit make an appearance. Just run through the list yourself and see the undeniable talent. Dabow himself shares on Twitter, “partica got us all together to create the biggest collab I’ve been part of. and it bangs super hard. friday.” Partica really did that. And the, “it’s Patricia,” vocal sample towards the end was really playful and fun.

Onto my personal critique—and let’s preface this by me admitting that collaborations rarely do it for me, but I tried to keep my own bias aside and listen to ‘FRANKENSTEIN’ for what it is—and it’s a good track. However, while there are some great trap builds, for a song marketed as ‘trap 2’, its drops and most memorable moments are on the dubstep and experimental bass realm. The song that has some of the best trap producers right now, so that part was a bit disappointing for me. Additionally, for a Halloween track, the spooky factor could have been turned up a notch. The intro was haunting, but once it hit the 30-second mark, I forgot it was a Halloween track until the “Frankenstein” sample came in.

I also get that the real Frankenstein is having so many different producers bring a different part in to create a mammoth of a track, though. And overall, it’s cohesive and a great tune. The artwork is also flames. So listen to the Partica mega collab ‘FRANKENSTEIN’ for yourselves below and let us know your thoughts!

Traveling back to 2017, Monstercat took a huge chance and hosted their first-ever block party called Monstercat Compound. Showcasing some of the most unique talents within the heart of Vancouver. A major step for not only the label itself but also their artists. Being such a huge success, they’ve continued to host it throughout the years. Spreading nothing but positivity and good music overall. But sadly, with the world being in complete disarray last year, they had to take a break to ensure the utmost safety for everyone. Now, with the help of Westwood Recordings, they’ve brought their everlasting event back to Canada once again this year for their fourth installment!

To celebrate their return to the big stage, Monstercat has introduced their first-ever label collaboration which honors the whole event and its major achievements. They call it, Compound 2021. And with Westwood Recordings helping to curate this beautiful lineup, it’s hard to not be totally stoked for what lies within! Artists such as The Funk Hunters, So Sus, Akylla and more have all participated to add to this wonderful movement and vision. All creating individual works of art to add to this incredible achievement. An eight-track body of work, honoring brand new up and comers as well as the veterans. Whatever style you’re into within electronic music, there’s something for everyone!

Monstercat Compound has always been such a special event for me, as it allows us to showcase what the organization is all about in my hometown of Vancouver. The Compilation was created to celebrate the incredible talent that Canada has to offer with our global community. I am thrilled to be collaborating with Westwood Recordings on this project, as the impact that they have made on the West Coast electronic music community was a real inspiration for me when I first started working in the industry. – Orri Sachar, Director of Music, Monstercat

The Compound 2021 compilation is a gorgeous new installation that commemorates the service both Monstercat and Westwood Recordings have brought to the industry. From groovy house music, aggressive dubstep, and even some gnarly trap, you’ll have nothing but a healthy and overwhelming smile from each piece. All adding their special flair to spice up this incredible dish of sound and rhythm. Resulting in one of the most memorable compilations of 2021. Each track flows into the next naturally. With much success and a great response from their first collaboration, ‘East Bridge,’ Hex Cougar, Pauline Herr, So Sus And Sejo have returned once again. To take their visions to the next level. Combining true will and dedication to reconnect a once broken society. Building a better tomorrow for all. A bridge to connect spirits again. And the key to it all is their newest body of work. The Genesis EP.

A four-track journey showcasing the process of saving the world through atmosphere and sound. Filled with heroic melodies and star-striking sound design, these masters of the spectrum truly gave it their all. Not stopping until finishing what needs to be done. Displaying perfect unity and balance within their friendship and bond. Spreading heart-stopping works of art. So prepare for one of the most unique and jaw-dropping expeditions within electronic music.

I’ve had this idea of getting a bunch of different producers together and trying to tackle a particular genre/style for a while now. So Sus, Sejo, and Pauline had all sent me demos independently, and I thought it would be a dope concept to combine all three tracks (plus one demo of mine) into one project and have everyone work on all the tracks simultaneously. – Hex Cougar

The Genesis EP saves the souls of the departed and the scared. It nurtures your ever-living being and lifts you back on your feet. Telling you everything will be ok and to keep fighting. From dreamy arrangements, everlasting atmospheres and powerful vocals, this powerhouse group knows how to make an outstanding first impression from beginning to end,

What’s so inspiring is the sheer stability of their conjoined styles. Bouncing off and benefiting from one another. Creating a near and unified utopia of peace. Each track never feels rushed and carries over in a wavy and memorable fashion. A passage that will stick for a lifetime. Making you become addicted and one with their art. Knowing the world is in the palm of your hands. By stepping out of their comfort zones, it’s easy to say they definitely learned a lot and discovered new abilities from each other. Bravo to each of them for creating individual rites of passage. Benefitting themselves as well as their listeners. And their stories will continue no matter what. So makes sure to go support and honor these artists by streaming their Genesis EP everywhere via Alter/Ego! We’re excited to see where they go next.
