An electric exploration of anxious love, the psyche, and the modern social experience, GLOWSTONE’s debut EP I is a vivid glimpse into the reality of two very unique musicians and demonstrates a sound in a class of its own. Formed by singer-songwriter-producer MADI and music-producer-musician and master composer sober rob, GLOWSTONE combines the insurmountable talents of both acts for something invigorating and introspective.

The duo waste no time on introductions or slow builds, and the EP immediately opens with sharp, biting percussion, a distorted bass, and MADI’s voice in both a gravel and a whisper, with a delicate harmony atop. The song, titled ‘BLACK MAGIC’ takes a look at the life of a musician in the digital age, with allusions to internet stardom, Space X, and internet fame that are all written with the spangled pen MADI is so known for in her music.

“Hey that’s my name / yeah I am somebody’s daughter/ I could tell you things that shock you/ been injected by the doctor/ Pay what you say / yeah it’s money in my face/ I can fake a TikToker/ all the ring lights/ and a timer”. The lyrics serve as a dark invitation to the world of I, as well as the pressures of mind-numbing entertainment facades and the new position of an artist as both musician and influencer.

This is repeated twice until listeners are swept into a delicate build and pre-chorus, with sober rob placing interspersed keys in between MADI’s delicate vocal, which soon turns to a near whisper at the confrontation of this new industry, in which she says, “It’ll be the death of me/ Oh my legacy.”

Throughout the piece, which continues to explore the relationship of the mind of the artist and its connection to the digital world, the beat itself ebbs and flows, with just as much attention to the intent as the lyrics. Sober Rob steps in to fill deep spaces, letting MADI’s words hang in the air without shrouding them in synths, and seems dedicated as a producer to the truth in the lyricism. His careful creation of atmosphere is something rarer in the EDM world, full of disconnected topliners who add music after the fact. It makes for a piece that rings with barren truth, and in that, a somber beauty.

The next track to follow, ‘FUzz,’ employs more synths and percussion, beginning on a distorted synth bass and electric guitar. Again, the lyrics and instrumental are laced tightly together, never neglecting the other in delivery and atmosphere. The piece seems to serve as a comfort from the harsh realizations of ‘BLACK MAGIC.’

“When you hit rock bottom/ Here’s an ice pack for your pretty face/ I’ve dreamed for revenge/ yeah it seemed so great/ `Cause I’m an evil woman / But your smile is pretty evil too/ I’ve dreamed for a chance we’d be in the same room/ In the same room.” It’s a devious and loving show of solidarity between the two artists, a song that testifies to the anxieties of the mind and the assurances of the heart. Together, the pair work through soundscapes with the deft knife of a surgeon, exacting in placement and delivery through every phrase. The song ends with immense and whirring sound design, and a peaceful resolve that leads into the even more joyful track that is‘FORMULA ONE.’

This piece is more dynamically contrasted in its verse/chorus structure, more pop-oriented, but it doesn’t depart from the alien-like sounds and metallic percussion of the rest of the EP. Lyrically, MADI explores the anxieties and joys of love, something that is complemented by the cyclical strings that make up the backdrop of the song, endless, anxious, but still warm in feel.

“Oh my heart is on a sleeve/ don’t cut in I’ll cut you out/” and the delicately placed line, “Can this last forever?” perfectly summarizes these feelings. Fear of being cut out while still remaining vulnerable. The question itself, “can this last forever?” serves as an expression of both joy and the anxiety MADI feels, once again demonstrating her mastery of songwriting. Her signature ethereal vocals on this piece, paired with Rob’s deliberate and nostalgic sonic experiments interplaying behind, create a new kind of romantic banter that serves the piece well.

The following piece ‘NO SLEEP’ dives deeper into MADI’s anxieties, and clearly delineates her immense struggles with mental health. An outspoken advocate for those like herself with BPD, MADI’s music often champions these conversations.

In discussing betrayal from an unknown hand, she concludes, “that this time I’ll be at war with myself/ toil my health/ send gods with shields of stone/ what follows/ I’m fearful/ this time I’ll be the fall/ lost my wealth/ all I’ve dealt/ this love and so much more/ what breaks me and my core.” Heartbreaking yet absorbing to listen to, ‘NO SLEEP’ is a glimpse into a macabre yet glistening worldview that captivates listeners at their most raw. The instrumental also attributes to this atmosphere, with echoing horns and more delicate drums that seem to cradle MADI’s fragility. The song is a standout for its haunting beauty and brings listeners into the most intimate sonic crawlspace, the resting base of the EP. A second of silence sits at the end of the piece, and the next song begins with a sparse synth that allows the listener to add in a bit of recovery from the weight of ‘NO SLEEP’.

The closing track on the EP, ‘LIGHTS OFF’ is a more uplifting discussion of the manias MADI experiences, along with a more universal tone of resolve in the expectation of life’s disappointments.

The song is more proclamatory in its production and lyricism, with words that speak to mental decay in the digital age, modern depression, and the desensitization via media. “They call it somethin’ else,” MADI writes. “It creeps inside these heads/ Hide behind the complex,/ We’re just so flicking sad.” Her words are accompanied by a buoyant bass synth and tinny percussion that feels at the same time nostalgic and experimental, the perfect accompaniment to MADI’s reflective state.

She continues with the chorus “You know when you had lost/ Yeah that feeling when you “felt like God”/ Tiptoeing to the top/ Then it leaves you/ And the lights go off.” The instrumental here shifts into a deeper, more distorted bass that pulls into the weight of the “God” complex MADI is alluding to, and the cycle repeats. The EP ends on a vocal flourish from MADI and a final bout of sound design from sober rob, a voice that transforms into a whirring whisp of smoke, a final swish of keys. The listener is left with both magnitude and purpose to choose from, to go about their own lives in a more meditative state.

Overall, the EP serves as a dazzling companionship of narrative and imagination, a collaboration well done. The birth of a stratospheric new sound, GLOWSTONE combines the deep mental introspection and darkly delicate diction MADI is so known for, in tandem with the brilliant production of sober Rob.

With only more to reach on their unparalleled horizons, GLOWSTONE solidifies itself as a vibrant and absolutely unprecedented act in the world of electronic music, leaving listeners ready for more.

I warn you. This article will be a short one without a detailed “technical” analysis. On the other hand, the closer something gets to perfection, the less there is to say about it. Perfection is not something that can be analyzed, turned inside out. It can only be admired. Stop. You’ll probably have already figured out where this write-up is going, but I feel that it is not the time to say it yet.

“I had this idea sitting on my hard drive for more than a year, but luckily Rob — someone I look up to — took a chance at helping me finish it,” camoufly stated. It was odd to read these words and discover that ‘From The Start’ wasn’t created four-handed by scratch or that it didn’t come straight out of an intensive studio session where camoufly and sober rob locked themselves up for two weeks. Yet, the chemistry between the two artistic interpretations is immaculate. Despite the surprise, I can’t say I couldn’t see this coming. The two already have directly and indirectly given evidence of being on the same wavelength (I remind you that they wrote this collaborative article a while ago).

It’s very interesting how in the official statement camoufly describes ‘From The Start.’ I find the contrast and apparent conflict of many of the terms extremely bizarre and fascinating. You find words like “complex” and “intricate” alongside “colorful” and “genuine.” The reason I dwell on this small detail is because I’d personally never have used terms like the first ones to describe the song. From the point of view of a profane listener (who knows nothing of technical stuff) ‘From The Start’ enchants with its transparency and authenticity. It has the same power as a glass of fresh, crystal clear water. It flows effortlessly. It fully satisfies you. Taking up the concept expressed at the beginning of the article, it’s easy to put together a full-bodied, passionate analysis of an elaborate cocktail. But what can you do when you find yourself in front of a glass of water? What can you say about something so simply perfect? You can just acknowledge its status. Then, coming to the point of this review, this is the only thing I can tell you: ‘From The Start’ is perfect.

Maybe there’s one more thing. That vocal sample is so damn, great.

‘From The Start’ was premiered on Sound (where it sold out in a single minute) but now is available on all streaming platforms.

Nobody does curation better than Lucid Monday. Every single time a new compilation drops, fans can expect everything from big names to up-and-coming talents, and hard-hitting beats to groovy bops. Recently, the masterminds behind the compilations have compromised more frequent releases for stacked collections spanning well over ten tracks, and their latest is the perfect embodiment of that statement. Coming over nine months since LM025, LM026 lives up to the hype and to the anticipation, spanning 22 tracks and featuring sounds from all the Lucid Monday favourites.

While it would take a novel to do every track justice, we have hand-selected a few favourites from the bunch to highlight today. And before we get into it, we highly implore you to dive into the compilation as a whole to form your own opinion, pick your own favourites, and appreciate the full breadth of talent on display in LM026.

The first standout comes from the ever-talented Chromonicci in ‘Teleporters.’ Doing what he has done so many times in the past, the producer fuses trap and bounce like no other in his latest tune, luring listeners in with a minimal approach that screams less is more. Not too complex but meticulously concocted, ‘Teleporters’ demonstrates Chromonicci’s undeniable talent in manipulating sounds.

The next standout comes from Losco and ONHELL, who teeter on the side of dubstep with their brute titled ‘Carnal.’ The track is ominous and sinister, borrowing elements from trap but carrying a halftime swagger with it that makes it so much darker and heavier. It’s unruly and unusual for a Lucid Monday contribution, but slaps way too hard to omit from the standouts.

Finally, the elusive zotti makes his return in a collaboration with FUXWITHIT favourites L*o*J in a stomping heater named ‘Pullup’ that meshes their styles to a tee. zotti’s vibrant sound makes itself heard throughout, while L*o*J contribute an arm-swinging vibe that makes ‘Pullup’ the type of tune that will make you flip your desk. Simply put, it boasts a confidence and swank that should be illegal.

There are so many more highlights in the compilation which in turn make LM026 a highlight of its own. Dilip, ini, olswel, Dabow, sober rob… the list goes on. Don’t miss it below.

sober rob, oshi, Pham… a brief list of names who were key in defining the rise of the future bass and trap sounds that SoundCloud explorers came to love, and that many tried to replicate over the last half-decade. Now, the torch has been passed to many others as the aforementioned artists have continued to break their respective sonic boundaries, but these talents sometimes return to their roots to remind fans where they came from, and what they are capable of doing. sober rob’s debut on NIGHTMODE titled ‘Atom Mirror’ is a perfect example of this statement.

‘Atom Mirror’ transports listeners to the glory days of SoundCloud through its vibrant energy, while keeping one grounded in the present with its futuristic textures. Wasting no time, a slow build quickly transitions into a quintessential sober rob drop lined with shimmering synths and rhythmic percussion. The idea is not extraordinarily complex, but the artist executes with a precision that is telling of his experience in the scene. With an even livelier second drop and an outro that oozes emotion, ‘Atom Mirror’ is a piece that hits in all the right places. Don’t miss it below.

But today, in 2021 we’re beyond excited to be able to shed some light on one of our favorite show announcements in years. Our good friends from Good Society (pun absolutely intended) planned a party in LA on August 7th, and will be hosting the first set in two years from the legendary producer Oshi.

As a nostalgic sucker for blissful beats, “gems I never released over the past 4 years” might be my favourite sequence of words, especially when followed by a promise of putting out these unreleased tracks. Call it an album, a beat tape, or simply a collection of tunes, perhaps the best Christmas present from producers this year came in the form of sober rob‘s 26-track compilation titled 1187. Yes, you read that correctly. Twenty-six tracks from the SoundCloud-era mastermind are available for streaming on the aforementioned platform as well as Audius.

“Many of these songs are unpolished and raw, lost projects that I didn’t go back and change, but I think it adds to the beauty and reflects the time when I made them,” sober rob shares about his latest collection. We know much of our audience has strong roots in the golden age of SoundCloud trap and future bass, and this album is perfectly tailored to this sound. From solo works, to pieces with long-time collaborator oshi, and a few more collaborations, every track from 1187 is a reflection of the sound sober rob has developed and evolved throughout the years, showcasing why he was at the forefront of the scene a few years back and why he remains such a strong force today. Personal favourites include ‘looking for you’ and ‘i know who you are’ with oshi, but we wouldn’t want to bias your opinion, so dive deep into the enthralling 1187 below and choose for yourself.

sober rob in recent years has dazzled fans with his otherworldly sound design and delectable beats. Setting up shop usually in the realms of future bass. Now we’ve been lucky enough to be blessed with a glimpse at his alter ego drunk Rob, who seems like he’d be a blast at parties. Making a hard 180 from the typical vibe of his songs, drunk rob is much more about thunderous kicks and an almost primal party persona. Boasting two distinct yet unquestionably relatable pieces of hi-fi ear candy in ‘OOOFFFF’ and ‘Pow,’ this EP is small but very, very mighty.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/671338268″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Leading this 2 track EP, sober rob blasts through the gates throwing punches and swingin’ elbows with this spacey banger. Hypnotic drum work layered with huge sub basses and rob’s elegant sound design brew the perfect concoction for this song. Leaving no room for sonic silence, this song is minimal yet so full of life, bringing a special kind of magic to our minds, and a familiar stank face and head nod to our bodies.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/671336795″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Rob teams up with Portugal-based Holly for this mortar cannon of a song, featuring kicks that aptly fit the title. Each note has a pleasing thickness to it, with little drags placed between bumps to give the movement this almost monkey bar effect, each note swinging perfectly to the next. This song becomes an absolute earth-shaker at loud volumes, bringing the filth to full frontal levels. With ‘Pow’ being the first ever collaboration between these two artists, I can only imagine what other audible intoxicants these guys can brew up.

Breathing new life into his project with this new alter ego drunk rob, sober rob reminds us of his versatility and his impressive amount of talent and skill. Leaving us wanting more, we hope to hear more big bangers out of rob, and I’m sure you do too. Don’t miss this heater of an EP, you will be sorry.

Words by Alex & Eli.

The wait is finally over. After working in the depths of his studio for the last year and beyond, sober rob can finally showcase his debut album with the masses. RESET has been in the works for what feels like forever, and sees the talented artist expand on his production abilities beyond what anyone could have imagined. The time spent refining his craft is displayed throughout the entire work, as sober rob has created a project that rivals some of the best future bass-oriented albums of all time.

Coming up in the golden era of SoundCloud, sober rob has always had a knack for making captivating, innovative future bass and trap beats. In an industry that is now saturated in these genres, the task of creating a unique full-length project while remaining true to his original sound was surely a daunting one. Nonetheless, sober rob has exceeded expectations in RESET. With his good friend oshi being the only collaborator on the production front, sober rob really lets his artistic skills shine throughout the project, whether on lyric-less instrumental ballads or on vocal-oriented tracks with Trevor Daniel, Karra, Sara Skinner and blackbear. RESET is a powerful, emotionally-driven album, as sober rob uses poignant lyrics, sultry chord progressions and penetrating sounds to evoke a plethora of caged emotions.

We strongly recommend you listen to RESET from front to back, as this will likely be one of the most underrated projects of the year. Check it out below!

Ekali & Denzel Curry’s ‘Babylon’ is an absolute monster. Remixing a track of this magnitude is no easy feat, but Ekali found a few producers that are more than up to the task. The official remix pack features 3 collaborative reworks. Kicking things off is Skrillex and Ronny J’s rendition. This one stays truest to the original, perfectly balancing Denzel’s vocals with some even more intense energy. I didn’t think it was possible, but this remix is even harder and darker than the OG. sober rob & oshi completely flip the vibe with their take. The beat and backdrop is smooth and elegant. It feels like riding though Central Park in a horse drawn carriage on the first snowfall of the season. But that’s just the beat. The aggressive in your face lyrics and delivery from Denzel are still there providing a stark juxtaposition that somehow works so well. Rounding things out comes X&G and josh pan’s flip. As expected it’s the wildest and weirdest of the bunch. What start out tranquil and vibe-laden goes completely off the deep end. One minute they’re hitting you with club inspired vocal chops, the next you’re straight into the jungle with tribal drums beating harder than you heart when you’re standing next to a lion. Stream below.
