Tyler, The Creator’s ‘Yonkers’ was a breakout smash that helped set the stage for the rapper’s long and impressive career. Almost a decade later, Chicago-based producer Vermyllion is resurrecting the track with a wild new flip that’s dropping today on Spicybois’ Bone Apple Teeth compilation. The opening is familiar, leveraging the instrumental loop from the original with some heavy processing to make it feel fresh and even grittier. Wasting no time, Vermyllion adds in some filthy bass. After a quick drum break the track doubles down on the filth using the sampled synth stab to cut through the drops like a freshly sharpened sickle. Just as things began to mellow out the talented producer brings in a rerecorded variation of the original’s opening lines to punch things up. “I actually recorded that vocal sample after I had already written the rest of the track. It was definitely a cherry on top type of decision. I thought it would be cool to incorporate more of the original track and felt like it definitely carried the energy of the tune through the breakdown and then building into the second drop.” Vermyllion tells us.

Vermyllion’s ‘Yonkers Flip’ presents the perfect fusion of nostalgic elements and forward-thinking, hard-hitting bass. Blast this one below.

As of late, Meso and the rest of the Spicybois ferocious lineup of artists have been on a war path of sonic destruction. Coming fresh off the heels of the announcement of their takeover at the inaugural Wakaan Festival at Mulberry Mountain Arkansas, now just this past weekend they had one of their tracks played out by the legendary Canadian duo Zeds Dead. Today, Meso and Connecticut’s own Zachary Camner, or Camnah, have tag-teamed a wub-fueled monstrosity titled ‘Jroc’.

If Alice in Wonderland needed a musical face lift, ‘Jroc’ would absolutely be the theme song. It’s one part wiggle-inducing alien sounds, and 2 parts hilarious Trailer Park Boys reference, as the name and vocal samples come from a popular character on the show. Listening to this song on repeat for extended periods of time will induce a light coma coupled with rolled back eyes and an elegant pile of drool as the listener’s consciousness is whisked away on an interstellar vacation through sound and space. Pull up to the loading dock of your mental spaceship with this cued in your playlist and prepare for the wild ride you’re about to embark on.

Check out ‘Jroc’ in all its glory for yourself below!

Fresh off Spicy Nois, a 13 track compilation, the Denver and Chicago leading label duo creators Kevin Lee (MeSo) and Hunter Nott of SpicyBois are back with a savory selection of bangers. Floppi Disk is a 14 track treasury of trippy trap infused with undefined bass. Innovative music minds are working together to exhibit their art, and joining forces to release compilations like these are an important factor to bringing them well deserved attention.

The success rate levels and support this label is experiencing continues to rise at an astounding rate. Surpassing a monumental record of 6k SoundCloud followers, their spotlight towards the freshest producers is becoming more prevalent. They are exposing the artists that epitomize hard work by allowing the music to do the talking for them. SpicyBois have also recently began taking over fests and cities all across the nation with the groups latest amalgamation being at The Untz Festival.

Floppi Disk features a variety of 17 different producers such as MeSo, bawldy, WEKS, LoTemp, and TOWERS to name a few. Each track contributes to the mood this comp displays and reveals ambitious curation of bass that conveys the progressive thinking these creators contain. A few standout songs that I felt really capture the essence what SpicyBois is all about are ‘SHLAPPER’, ‘Vibe Shift’, and ‘Still Fukin’. Get familiar with this whole release though because they are guaranteed to be rinsed out everywhere this festival season.

British Columbia’s John Mitchell is no stranger to the dark eclectic periphery of experimental bass. Diligently polishing the scope of his production caliber under the guise just john for the past 3 years, Mitchell possesses an enigmatic capacity for conceiving tactful soundscapes, utilizing minimal percussion and cogent wobbles as depicted in standalone singles such as ‘This’ or ‘God Damn’.

Cut from the catalog of Perfect Number, Mitchell’s debut SpicyBois EP, ‘Darkness’ presents an opportunity for the styles of just john & smoakland to synthesize as one. “We share a similar vision and proclivity for experimental bass, and I think our styles both really shine through on this track,” Mitchell reflects on working with the Bay Area duo.

Hypnotic echoing lays the foundation for the track, weaving mesmerizing energy as it begins to unfold. A precipitous rush dissipates the melody briefly as a fleeting vocal sample thrusts the track into a rhythmic sequence of wobbles. Crisp beat breaks reveal hidden fringes of resonating frequencies and digitized mixdowns within entrancing energy soundscape of the track before a final momentous reprise imparts a final eruption of turbulent bass.

‘Darkness’ is an immaculate personification of just john’s virtuous production craft and boundless creative dexterity. Demonstrating Mitchell’s uncanny ability to work cohesively with other styles, the track depicts remarkable depth and a riveting flow that cunningly foreshadows the acuity that permeates the entire Perfect Number EP.

2 Beard Crew runs deeper than your average music duo. Evan Ebner and Donny Barlow met in the 7th grade and have since built a long history of friendship. The duo were living together when starting college and they began to explore the Detroit EDM scene around 2011. Having influences early on from the likes of Flux Pavilion, Caspa, Rusko, and, ill.Gates you can hear this shine through in their earlier work. Their first single, ‘Iced Out’, was presented nearly three years ago when the gritty and raw dubstep influential sounds were prominent and would go on to set the foundational tone for this crew who is currently signed to Mean Mug Music.

Progressing as a team, their craft slowly began to alter and be refined over time. “Around 2015 things started to shift in the scene and we began to dive deeper and discover darker sounds like TRUTH and The Widdler.” With this unearthing of new and intense heavy hitting formulas, the 2 Beard Crew would begin a revamped vision, “combing the new and old wave of bass music with heavy trap beats [and] lots of sauce.” Extra saucy if you will, so grab some extra napkins. This artistic transformation would come with the release of their mix ‘DEEP, DARK, DETROIT’ where Ebner and Barlow began to present these non-traditional bass structures over classic dubstep and trap layers. Although the 140 bpm range reigns supreme, the two would start to investigate an innovative and uncharted territory between 115-130 bpm.

Consequently, the examination of untraveled bpm ranges is what permits 2 Beard Crew to stand out from the rest. The chemistry between these two is captured throughout their work of sub-heavy music. Continuing to gain recognition for their studio skills, ‘Elevate’ is their latest release which is out on the leading edge label of SpicyBois. This song comes out of the gates swinging and ready to abduct any bystanders. Descending into the riser of the intro, listeners are hit with supersonic samples that evolve into an uproar of noises, seeming to have a cause & effect reaction. The end of one sound triggers the next and compliments a range of diverse commotion to piece together this audible exhibition.

SpicyBois was started in May of 2018 by Kevin Lee and Hunter Nott. It was created to provide an outlet for sharing music of lesser known artists. Good music can only be kept hidden for so long and they are here to share the broad spectrum of forward-thinking musicians. At a near 5k SoundCloud following, they have already provided a home for 74 tracks and continue to grow as they takeover this year. Spicy Nois was pieced together out of Lee and Nott’s love for music and an urge to bring attention to exceptionally talented producers who may otherwise go unheard. This 13 track project represents the depths of the underground and displays the quality of weird and wild yet oddly satisfying, ear massaging music that the SpicyBois label strive to release.
