With releases that continue to be erratic and incalculable, spüke’s latest track ‘DRUNK’ turns back the clock to the 1980s, to the rise of acid house and the TB-303. A brand new step in his own production journey, the track serves as yet another testament to spüke’s genuine curiosity and ardor for sonic exploration, never concerned with creed or genre.

‘DRUNK’ is a faultless time capsule of the acid house of electronic music’s past, and this reflection offers hope for the future, with music that is as bright and inventive as it is nostalgic. The new track features the sounds of the Roland TB-303, a novelty bass synthesizer (and arguably the most sought-after machine) that was released by Roland Corporation in 1982. Designed to simulate bass guitars, it was regarded as a commercial failure and discontinued in 1984, merely 2 years into production. But the sound itself gave rise to the beginning of the acid house genre, and the defunct device helped lead the electronic music renaissance in 1980s Chicago, along with iconic Phuture DJ, originally comprised of Early “Spanky” Smith Jr., Herbert “Herb J” Jackson, and Nathaniel Pierre Jones, aka DJ Pierre.

The term “acid” is derived from the distinctly harsh “acidic” sound of the Roland 303’s squelchy resonant filter. Experimentation with the device by Phuture led to some of the most dynamic sounds of the era and made for music that was more than mesmerizing.

With such a rich history, it’s no wonder spüke has dove headfirst into what has influenced a larger portion of his discography. “I’ve enjoyed the 303 sound for a while now,” spüke says. “I’ve been incorporating it melodically in a couple of recent works… but I wanted to skew off and create a faster, harder, grittier track [with ‘DRUNK’].”

The original TB-303 is hard to come by, with original versions selling for upwards of $4,000 on eBay, so to create something authentic and original, even with new VST plugins and samples, can prove to be immensely difficult. And yet, ‘DRUNK’ seems to replicate a great deal of this nostalgic sound perfectly, bearing an unmistakable resemblance to Acid House of old, while keeping other aspects of the track buoyed to contemporary production techniques. The blend is electrifying, as custom robotic vocals also echo the phrase “Is it the acid? Is it the whiskey? No! It’s this fucking music!”. While the term “acid” does refer to the drum machine, listeners will definitely be left on a high from this titillating track.

Blessing music lovers everywhere, spüke is back with a brand new gem! This time, he presents a whole new vibe and atmosphere for his project. ‘High As The Moon’ is truly the next big step for his overall sound. Combining airy melodies, gentle drums, and a spacey atmosphere. All working as one to create one of his best tracks to date. If you haven’t heard of this groovy ghost yet, then we highly suggest checking out his discography of highly acclaimed works of art.

For a while now, spüke has done nothing but create a unique and everlasting world for himself and his listeners. A spectacular and star-striking vision which continues to push boundaries within the electronic music industry. From funky remixes of artists such as Khalid, Justin Bieber and more, to teaming up with big labels like BONSAI and Electric Hawk, he’s paving a solid and shining road to a better future. And with this new single, he’s expanding his sound even further to the highest degree. Surprising fans from all over and gaining a new level of respect for his flexibility within music production.

This track was spawned out of pure happiness. I was feeling ‘high as the moon!’ it had been awhile since I created a purely happy original. The drop in this actually started out with just a few flute notes… but it wasn’t enough, it didn’t portray my emotion to the fullest… so I went back in and started randomly (within key) dropping notes EVERYWHERE… and it worked! – spüke

‘High As The Moon’ takes you where no man has ever gone before. Completely changing the game with angelic flute melodies combining with a soothing environment surrounding all. Captivating any listener from the first to the last second. What’s so special about this is how unique the production sounds with every note being played. Careful attention to detail, skilled craftsmanship within the quality, and more, you’ll fall madly in love with this meditative vibe. Nurturing your well-being and attitude. Inspiring many to keep on fighting the good fight. It contains many different and brand-new qualities while still holding that classic spüke touch we’ve come to know and love. Uplifting fan’s hearts into the clouds. Soaring high above all. Never wanting to leave. We’re excited to see where this legend floats off to next. But for now, make sure to go support his hard work by streaming ‘High As The Moon’ everywhere!

If you’re looking for some fresh house music, you need to get familiar with spüke. First landing on my radar with ’emanate’ off Bonsai’s debut compilation, the track went from a standout to a staple in my summer rotation. It’s breezy and smooth while maintaining a futuristic and wonky feel. Its powerful vocals and keys provide an emotional appeal that commands repeat listens. It seems I haven’t been the only one bumping it on repeat, as the track recently hit a million plays on Spotify. But don’t mistake the Californian for a one-hit wonder. His catalog is lush with bops and bangers including ‘I Can’t Stop’ and ‘Les Filles.’ Always delivering, we thought it was due time to have spüke drop in for a guest mix + interview. The mix is an energetic house affair that’ll transport you to the club and get you moving! As for the interview, we delve into what drives him as an artist, hitting a million plays on a single, first shows back, and more. Dive in below and blast the mix.

Paint us a picture: where are we going with this mix?

It’s actually about where I went with this mix; This is a part of a headline mix I created to play at my shows in Dallas, OKC, and 2 cities in California… so you’re basically getting a peek of the energy I bring when I’m on stage with this one!

How’s California treating you?

Amazing… other than this insane heat. I’m getting more shows around my hometown and growing my name bigger around here with the help of my management and some good friends @SVRFCE! I truly have the most amazing and supportive friends out here. Although I don’t care for my location, I make the most out of it!

I started creating and I continued creating because of one simple reason… it’s fucking fun!

What made you want to start making music? What drives you to continue?

Discovering that there were different kinds of electronic music and being fascinated with the new sounds I was hearing back in 2014-15. My dad was a CD DJ and would always play progressive house… which I didn’t care for and I equated that to being the entirety of “EDM”… little did I know there was a whole world of it. Discovering artists like Flume, Disclosure, Tchami, 20syl, C2C, BRO SAFARI, San Holo, Fabich, Louis The Child… you get the point; so many amazing artists making amazing sounds. I WANTED IN ON IT! So I started creating and I continued creating because of one simple reason… it’s fucking fun!

Can you talk a little about your recent struggle between making music for an audience vs. yourself? What impact has this had on your music recently?

There hasn’t been a struggle, I’ve always made music for myself! If you’re talking about me coming out with harder music… It’s what I always wanted to do. spüke was supposed to be a bass house project… like early Jauz type stuff… Thank god that didn’t happen. I loved the weird spin on house music and the original sound I started pumping out but I’ve always loved mixing bass/tech house. What you’re hearing now is my project splitting in 2… my melodic music being my “Ethereal” side and my heavier music being my “Supernatural” side. The response to me creating different music has been beautiful, I’m glad people are on board with what I’m putting out. It’s truly the greatest feeling!

I truly couldn’t be happier. I’m forever grateful to everyone who supports me and what I do.

You just hit a million plays on ‘Emanate.’ Congratulations! Where were you when you found out? How did you react?

Thank you so much! Being in the age of technology… not much of an exciting story because I saw it coming. I knew the exact day I would hit a million based on how many streams it was getting a day. I was in bed after waking up but my heart still sank, I let out a big sigh, and I just soaked it all in. All my hard work from the very beginning til this exact moment is paying off. I truly couldn’t be happier. I’m forever grateful to everyone who supports me and what I do.

People have been waiting for shows to come back, they had all this built-up energy that they’d just been storing up and now they can release it all! Love the energy I’m seeing, it’s so beautiful.

How have shows been so far post-pandemic? Is the energy different?

THE ENERGY IS A THOUSAND TIMES MORE INSANE. People have been waiting for shows to come back, they had all this built-up energy that they’d just been storing up and now they can release it all! Love the energy I’m seeing, it’s so beautiful.

What’s the last track that truly amazed you? What made it resonate with you so strongly?

In terms of MY music it’s ‘Les Filles’ because it took a year for me to get it how I wanted it to and when it was finished I sat back and was like, “I did it… I fucking did it! I made a heavy house banger like I’d always wanted to,” almost cried.

In terms of other artists it’d have to be Odd Mob’s remix to ‘Virus’ by Kloud. Wow. Odd Mob is a mastermind, all of his music is insane. ‘Virus’ hits different, it’s melodic but hard at the same time. Hits you right in the feels with that beautiful piano and the drop gives you an outlet to release all the feels. You have to give it a listen to understand what I’m talking about!

When you’re not making music and DJing how are you spending your time?

I work as a beertender at a Taproom! I love craft beer and visiting breweries from all around, it’s my second hobby! Bike Dog from Sacramento and Humble Sea from Santa Cruz are 2 of my favorites. Hanging out with my girl and going fun places with her, chilling, traveling, and mixing with the homies, and playing Apex Legends or Rocket League add me @spukeyboi on XBOX ;)

What do you have in store for fans for the remainder of the year?

MORE MUSIC, MORE SHOWS, MORE GIVEAWAYS, MORE… MERCH? What more could the fans want. I could post more selfies? I bet they’d like that.

Without all of you, I wouldn’t be doing the wild things I’m doing now. I love you all so much.

Any final words for fans?

Thank you, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart! Your support means the world to me and my project. I wake up everyday happy to have such an engaging and exciting fan base. Without all of you, I wouldn’t be doing the wild things I’m doing now. I love you all so much. Thank you again!

Focus Five is back for 2021! As January comes to a close it’s time for us to round up our five fresh finds for the month. Rounding out the list we have some incredible future beats, a fresh take on house, drum and bass mastery, and a few producers defying genre barriers. Check them all below.

Cerdin

First setting off my radar in late September, killer Calgarian producer Cerdin kicked the door down with the ferocity of ‘FRACTURE.’ Its undeniable intensity and ominous energy give it the feeling of a high-stakes shootout. Almost unhinged in its radioactive rollout, Cerdin doesn’t let the track stagnate; instead, he fires off a flurry of effects while sending ‘FRACTURE’ flying off in all directions. More recently, we’ve seen an explosion of releases as he tackled the likes of A.G. Cook, Baauer, and Clipping in his second remix package. While distinct in their styles, each one of these free offerings slaps. Whether hyperactive like ‘Show Me What,’ a wall of sound like ‘AETHER,’ or slow and sadistic like ‘96 Neve Campbell,’ Cerdin crafts the perfect punch for each track. Now, for my money, Cerdin’s hardest hitters come in ‘Lemonade,’ ‘3030!‘ and ‘OLD SCHOOL.’ Hop on his hardcore bandwagon and brace yourself for a bumpy ride!

Drvmmer

Now that I think about it, it’s almost a year since I met Andrea aka Drvmmer for the first time. If I’m not wrong, it was during the only gig I attended in 2020 alongside Patrick, msft., Voliik, Marlus, GAZZ, Degra and many others. Ah, the nostalgia. Anyway, I waited so long to give him a spotlight not because I wanted to spite him but because I preferred to follow a rational approach. You see, sometimes here on Focus Five I like to follow my instincts and make bets, but I know that I’m not flawless. For this first episode of the year instead, I wanted to give you a guarantee and now I can assure you that waging on this artist is not a risky business. Drvmmer is an assurance. It’s not subject to volatility and inflation. His production level leaves no doubt, it is first class. Even though he usually creates highly complex sonic textures, the outcome is always absurdly clean. It doesn’t matter how many genres it changes within a single song or how much the sound pressure is: the outcome will always be a treat for your ears. Dubstep, electronica, drum&bass his SoundCloud profile says loud and clear “fuck genres”. Want concrete proof? Just listen to his latest remix of Jack U’s classic ‘Mind’ and thank me later. From what I know, he’s sitting on an insane amount of music and, even if he’s going to release just a small share of it, I’m sure you’ll see him again on the pages of FUXWITHIT in 2021.

Knick

It may be a new year but I’m keeping my streak of championing future beats alive in 2021. One of the latest producers to catch my ear within the space is North Carolina’s Knick. It was Knick’s collaboration ‘distantworlds’ off of cozy kev’s complacency that first caught my attention. The track is a majestic work of art – heavenly, vibey and packing just the right amount of bump. A dive into Knick’s SoundCloud shows this is no fluke. He just dropped a next-level collab with $teev, koru & ohgoddc entitled ‘elevate’. Living up to its name, the song will take you to a higher plane of existence. It will allow you to feel lighter, unburdened, and lost in the bounce. While the collabs are amazing, Knick can definitely stand alone on his own. ‘circumvent’ is absolutely stunning while ‘aluminum’ shows off a more relentless approach. For the future beats fanatics such myself, Knick is undeniably one to watch.

spüke

The last year has been everything but easy for everyone. Given the challenges, we could all use a little uplifting. Enter: spüke. The California producer is crafting energizing and futuristic house tunes to give listeners new life. ‘Emanate’ which was released on Bonsai’s Hayashi compilation was a staple in my summer rotation. Moving vocals, wildly bouncy drops, and a playful candor made it a certified warm weather bop. Keeping the heat up came the gripping and emotive ‘tell me’ which carries a truly uplifting energy. Risking it all with a remix of a classic, spüke delivered with an addictive flip of Flux Pavillion’s ‘I Can’t Stop.’ Taking on a iconic anthem is no easy feat but the talented producer delivered in full. If you’re looking for a fresh spin on house check out spüke.

Trinist

Unfortunately, I can’t take the credit for this one, but I feel like this month’s list would be incomplete without the inclusion of Trinist. Landing on my radar just a couple of weeks ago thanks to his pristine release on Powered by Inspected: Series 2, I knew I had to jump aboard the Trinist train before the bandwagon left the station. With less than 400 SoundCloud followers at the time of writing, the Netherlands-based producer has shown immense promise with his latest releases on Inspected, VALE, and Andy C’s RAM Records. The former, which was my introduction to this talented artist, is a mind-melting drum and bass cut that’s abrasive yet bouncy, and chaotic yet controlled. A deeper dive into Trinist’s brief arsenal shows more of this meticulous attention to detail, with carefully crafted sounds and mechanical percussion precision being a recurring theme in his latest tracks. I’m keeping a close eye on Trinist, you should too.

Continuously separating themselves as one of the most premiere platforms in all of dance music, the fine folks at Electric Hawk have shown they have quite the knack for finding the pulse of the community and some of the most sultry underground talent. Just a little over a year ago they unveiled their debut compilation album In Harmony, a wide-ranging eclectic collection of tracks from some of the brightest up-and-coming minds in the business. Now, they’ve started 2021 with all cylinders firing with the release of their sophomore compilation in the form of In Unity, a delightfully diverse collection featuring blistering pieces from the likes of Redrum, Deadcrow, FRQ NCY, Tek Genesis, NotLö, Sky Suite, Capshun, Eyezic, Spüke, Nik P, and many more! Check out my full thoughts on the compilation, and snag a saucy surprise for this weekend below!

Gently welcoming you into the calming embrace of this sonic voyage, Redrum kicks things off with a full-bodied, elongated hug with ‘Fluid.’ Featuring airy, thought-provoking melodies and a warm glow, this piece is the equivalent of watching the sunrise as you sip your morning coffee in solitude, keeping you firmly grounded in that moment. A wonderful kick-off to In Unity, listeners will be left locked-in as the tracklist moves ever deeper through the compilation.

Feeling like a jolt of electricity that courses through your bones, Nik P’s ‘Crescent’ is a tremendous concoction of delectable drum and bass that makes it nearly impossible to not start wildly wiggling no matter the setting. Deep basslines, swagged-out fills, and sensational grooves combine to create a sound that is truly irresistible. An audible stimulant of only the highest caliber, Nik P has truly outdone himself, and offered up one of the most energetic pieces on the entire compilation.

Settling into the middle of In Unity, the tremendous twosome of NotLö and Sky Suite offer up a sizzling bass-heavy affair in the form of ‘Dismantle’, a piece that successfully rearranges your being at a subatomic level. With nothing dainty about this piece in sight, listeners should expect hearty cascades of thunderous low-end and immense amounts of crunchy delight. It’s not often that two swiftly rising titans of the underground scene put their heads together, but fans will be guaranteed to be more than satisfied from this delightful combination.

For fans of gritty heavy goodness, Deadcrow’s ‘Predator’ is an absolute weapon of a track, capable of leveling entire city blocks with its vicious sound design. Without a doubt the heaviest piece on In Unity, this is one track that’s surely going to be a favorite among the basshead crowd and would be a sure-fire gamechanger on a standard festival rig. For hard wave aficionados, and even fans of genre-bending underground heat, Deadcrow successfully serves up only the spiciest of heat.

Sydney, Australia’s Tek Genesis continues his sonic expansion from his original project William., trading more traditional trap stylings for left-field-centric flavors. His latest track ‘Holographix’ is no exception, sporting an underlying hip-hop aesthetic while pounding your eardrums with heavy, full-bodied bass that gets one’s head nodding ever-so-satisfyingly. A little bit dubby, a little bit wubby, but all around a fantastic time.

One of the most refreshing pieces on In Unity, ‘Epiphany’ brings unmatched energy to the table filled with unbridled and unrelenting positivity. A track that truly makes it difficult not to smile and get up and groove, this equates to a tremendous treat on the ears and a pleasant jolt to the bones. FRQ NCY has truly upped his sound design to immaculate levels, and his artistic prowess will surely carry him to major career milestones in the coming years.

The last piece I’m going to cover from In Unity is the massive three-way collab between Capshun, Eyezic, and Spüke. A gyration-inducing amalgamation of distinct styles that come together to create an atmosphere of inquisitive joy. Peace sitting calmly at the forefront of your mind while your body relishes in the current moment, it ends by drifting off to quietly to nothing, going out just as soothingly as it began.

Wow. 14 tracks. 18 artists. 1 massive success. In Unity perfectly encompasses the boundary-defying attitude that is so prevalent from the fine folks at Electric Hawk, and is a sure sign that they’re here for good. A shining light in the music community, and a welcome home for the best and brightest, their sophomore compilation album is a smash hit. Want to keep the party rolling? Check out their In Unity Virtual Music Festival this Saturday and Sunday (January 23-24) featuring almost every artist included on In Unity, along with the saxxiest man in bass music Griz. If Electric Hawk’s past streams are any indication of what’s to come, this will surely be a can’t miss event. Hope to see you all in the chat!
