Sylvan LaCue Delivers ‘No More Apologies DEMOS’

Less than a week after celebrating the 6 year anniversary of his breakout mixtape Searching Sylvan, Sylvan LaCue has blessed fans with No More Apologies DEMOS. Sylvan characterizes it as, “A compilation of songs that either didn’t make ‘Apologies in Advance’ or my upcoming album.” The 9 track effort is a perfect sampler to hold fans over as they await his upcoming LP. The project packs a little bit of everything from pensive and reflective cuts, to straight flexing on tracks and everything in between. Short but sweet, it’s a reminder of everything we’ve come to love about Sylvan, notably his openness, honesty and ability to skate over beats flawlessly. Despite the lack of precise conceptual direction you’d regularly expect from Sylvan, the quality does not suffer in the slightest.

Our favourite Florida rapper is back! Amidst his tour, Sylvan LaCue took the time to bless fans with an incredible new freestyle. Going in over Bas & J. Cole’s ‘Tribe,’ Sylvan does what he does best: floating over the vibey beat and raining down quotable while switching his flow. ‘3:33’ is sure to command spin backs with LaCue touching on passing up on deal from Roc Nation to continue his independent grind with Wise Up, Mac Miller’s passing and overcoming doubters who said he, “wouldn’t be shit without Logic”. Great bars over an equally great beat, oh and it comes with a dope visual too. What more could you ask for?

Sylvan LaCue Drops First Great Rap Release of 2018 With ‘Apologies in Advance’

Since the release of Searching Sylvan, Sylvan LaCue has consistently proven he’s one of the best rappers out. While he may not receive the popularity or looks of artists like J. Cole and Chance The Rapper, the quality of his music is certainly on par. With the release of Apologies in Advance, Sylvan proves this once more. While a large portion of rap these days is overly simplistic, favoring melodies and heavy production in place of lyricism and storytelling, Sylvan ops to stay true to himself. The album may be the deepest exploration of one’s self I’ve heard in a rap record. There’s no persona, no falsehood, just unbridled honesty. It’s a theme we’re seen in that past from LaCue but Apologies in Advance takes things deeper than ever before.

The project is tied together with a series of skits (9 total) that take you inside a support group of millennials opening up and exploring things like self-worth, motivation, anxiety, unattainable perfection and more. At first glance the concept could seem corny and if the execution wasn’t there it would be. Thankfully, it is there. The conversations feel honest and are deeply relatable. They serve the story well and help to deepen the concept. Each skit gives you a new perspective and warms you to new ideas that Sylvan explores in depth in the following song.

While the skits may become tiresome/redundant with multiple listens leading to skips, the music itself is definitely skip free. The 11 songs contained within the project are nothing short of amazing. The production, which was mainly handled by LaCue himself, provides the perfect back drop on each track. It’s powerful enough to command your attention while not being overpowering, which allows Sylvan’s lyrics to be the be the focal point. The lyrics hit deep, whether they’re inspiring you or forcing you to look inwards and re-evaluate yourself. It’s not the easiest listen you’ll approach this year, but it’s likely to be one of the best. Apologies In Advance proves that quality rap music hasn’t gone anywhere, you just may need to look a bit further than the Billboard and SoundCloud charts.

In the span of a few years he’s sharpened his skills and refined his voice with each release. 2017 saw a shift in his music with him getting behind the boards and producing his own tracks. Sylvan LaCue is back at it with the self-produced single ‘Guilt Trip.’ It’s his third release off his upcoming album Apologies in Advance and it picks up where ‘Best Me’ and ‘Grateful’ left off. Icy keys provide the backbone for the beat, while heavy bass and slapping drum work drift in and out. Lyrically it’s what we’ve come to expect from Sylvan; introspective and personal with a weight of emotion. It’s a slice of Sylvan’s soul that you can’t help but indulge. His pain, passion and confusion are emotions that you find in yourself. Along with the release comes a stunning visual directed by Jonathan Benavente. It’s split into two distinct sections that help to clearly divide the track into two unique parts Considering the quality of the visual and the track it’s clear that Sylvan is one of best independent artists out. SABA & Sylvan LaCue’s Bucket List Tour Offers A Glimpse Into The Future of Hip-Hop

There’s nothing better than seeing immensely talented artists in an intimate venue before they blow. There’s something magical about going to a show where there isn’t a bad spot in the house and seeing a star (or in this case two) in the making. April 1st saw Saba & Sylvan LaCue‘s Bucket List Tour descend upon the 6ix. Taking over Adelaide Hall, the event was a true showcase of hip-hop’s future.

I rolled in as Pivot Gang’s Joseph Chilliams was on stage. Despite the fact that it was just before 9:00pm the crowd was surprisingly well filled-in and energetic. Chilliams’ stage presence was unique to say the least. His demeanor was something between a friendly stoner and a stand-up comic. His humor was easily his brightest talent; whether it was transitioning between tunes or dropping laugh out loud inducing bars like ‘FN-2187’s, “Real niggas never pull out/shout out my dad.” I can’t help but mention he also dropped a tune dedicated to Fergie. Needless to say he definitely scooped up a few new fans.

Sylvan appeared on stage shortly after Chilliams, rocking a Wise-up tee, a hoody and a jean jacket. The low-key style was a cool contrast to his commanding energy as he kicked things off with the high energy ‘Automatic’. The intensity swept over the crowd and had hands waving with ferocity. Sylvan closed the track off a Capella, a tactic he deplored several times throughout. The lack of backing served to showcase his flow, punctuate specific lyrics and add a more organic 1-on-1 feel. After his first track Sylvan let fans know his DJ actually couldn’t make it into Canada so he had his photographer filling in. Despite that fact the show still moved quite smooth and Sylvan was able to adlib through any extra loops or slightly behind fades. The set centered around his most recent releases with tracks like ‘Heavenly,’ ‘The Truman Show’ and ‘Grateful’. He closed the set off with his inspirational anthem ‘Best Me’ to immense fan fare. The track closed out beautifully with fans finishing the hook one last time.

After Sylvan’s stellar set, DJ Dam Dam jumped on the decks to keep the energy up and get the crowd hyped for SABA. He played it up to the hometown crowd with Jazz Cartier’s ‘Dead Or Alive’ before taking fans to Chicago with everything from Chief Keef to Kanye.

SABA came out smooth cruisin’ onto the stage with the swaggy ‘Stoney’. He took a quick break to celebrate the tour’s independent status and the fact that majority of the tracks he was performing were cut in his grandma’s basement. He then took time to slow things down and sing a back and forth ballad with the crowd. When Chance The Rappers ‘Angels’ came on the crowd erupted. Possibly the most memorable portion of the night came when he brought back Sylvan LaCue for ‘Best Me’ remix. SABA started calm with the mic on its stand and little movement. As his verse intensified as did his energy; ripping the mic off the stand and belting out the final bars. Sylvan kept it low-key while SABA rocked the stage but exploded as soon it was time for his verse. The chemistry on stage was incredible and had fans wishing they had more collabs on deck.

Following it up SABA took it back to a few ComfortZone cuts for the OG fans. This portion allowed SABA’s keyboardist/drummer some shine with tight solo breaks. From there things took a serious turn. Feeling one with the crowd, SABA allowed himself to get personal. Informing fans that just after finding out he booked his first headlining tour, his cousin John Walt was tragically murdered. He incited a chant to pay his respects before performing the fittingly poignant ‘Church / Liquor Store’. With the night coming to a close, SABA shut things down with ‘MOST’ and ‘Westside Bound 3’. The latter had Joseph Chilliams return to the stage to drop his guest verse. SABA hadn’t even left the stage before the encore chants began. Proving to be a true crowd-pleaser he easily obliged.

The Bucket List tour was everything you hope for in a hip-hop show. It hit you with myriad of emotions from straight laughter to turnt intensity. It left you feeling reflective and inspired and at times even touched. The show proved that SABA & Sylvan LaCue are the future of hip-hop.

Sylvan LaCue Gets Reflective On ‘Grateful’

Often times life moves so quickly we forget recognize what’s in front of us and how lucky we really are. Sylvan LaCue has been feeling this lately and decided to encapsulate it into a song. Produced by Sylvan and frequent collaborator Wishlade, ‘Grateful’ embodies a laid-back vibe with sunset-inspired guitar riffs and steady bump. Sylvan looks inward with lyrics like, “I was but a young boy with a no dream, can’t nothing ruin my day/ Made a lot of progress in my lifetime, dog, I done came a long way/ I don’t ever stop to think about shit, dog, like why the fuck you so mad?/ Always want to talk about what I ain’t got instead of everything that I had.” LaCue is at his finest when he’s most honest and vulnerable and ‘Grateful’ captures that perfectly. Sylvan LaCue Drifts Through The Woods in ‘Best Me’ Visual
