As 2020 draws to a close, there are a few names that have shined through the darkness that has seemingly been cast over the music industry. Through innovative takes on Drum and Bass and energetic live sets showcased on various live streams this year, REAPER has not only made a name for himself in the modern dance landscape but has become one of the leaders in the movement dubbed “DNB2020.” The masked menace unleashed his massive RENEGADE EP with Monstercat, before giving us a follow-up remix pack with five massive flips of ‘BARRICADE’. REAPER was even kind enough to drop off a true crate-digger of a guest mix for us recently, and now he’s back with another festival-ready single, ‘LEVITATE.’ This time in collaboration with SYN, a fellow member and rising talent on the stacked Radish Management roster.

Right from the start, the record’s energy is set to max with its up-tempo percussion patterns and heavily distorted guitar riff combined with a commanding and hypnotic vocal. In case you somehow weren’t aware of what you’re getting yourself into, the vocals quickly put you in your place. As explicitly stated, “this beat will make you Levitate.” Soon after, we’re thrown into a section that is sure to get you off your feet with its incredible sound design and unrelenting barrage of pounding percussion elements. As if this wasn’t enough already, we’re blessed with a much welcomed half-time switch, serving as the perfect cherry on top of this massive tune. Check out the whole thing down below!

Diverse as always, Focus Five 14 is once again your monthly sampling of the best new talent. Capping off March we have an aural shaman who’s music is frighteningly unique, a young future beat prodigy, the Alexander Wang of bass music, a Montreal based producer creating NEW RAVE, and finally a Swiss artist whose works are sure to instill a smile across your face. Get to know each of these artists below.

Mystic Grizzly

Jordan Hoffman is as much an aural shaman as he is an astonishingly brilliant and frighteningly unique music producer. Crafting intricate, enigmatic soundscapes under the guise Mystic Grizzly, with the intention to provoke deep thought and self-reflection, while promoting a sense of community and understanding for the tremendous impact and significance that music plays within the world. A multi-talented musician with nearly a decade of experience with guitar, piano, percussion, and harmonica, Mystic Grizzly’s ear for the uncanny and desire to push the boundaries of experimental bass gives his style a flavor of depth and precision that is currently unrivaled.

The We’ve Arrived EP paints a vivid depiction of Hoffman’s ability to work within his individual style as an artist, while Extra Ordinary with leet and Sacred Path demonstrate an equivalent talent for working candidly with supplementary sounds. Regardless of the method of delivery, the style of Mystic Grizzly will induce a dreamlike state of introspection.

olswel

olswel has been on my list as a candidate for Focus Five for nearly a year. Tracks like ‘bb_ily’ and ‘TR808’ showcased a high level of raw potential and originality but left me feeling like his full potential was yet to be fully realized. It seems time is all it would take, as 2019 has been off to a remarkable start both in terms of quality of work and overall output. The past two months have been nothing short of amazing with 3 incredible collabs with inimicvs, another collab with Summet and 3 solo originals. Almost every single week olswel is back with another impressive effort. Combining future beat, trap, future bass, and an almost jazz-like freedom for creative exploration, olswel is a must-listen for anyone who love artists like Sam Gellaitry and chromonicci. olswel is on track to become your favourite producer’s favourite producer, so don’t sleep.

Park

Park is not just a producer, he’s a freaking designer. The Armani of sound design, the Alexander Wang of bass music. Crazy ideas twisted with always excellent craftsmanship, creativity and technical skills, mind and machines working in perfect synergy: that’s what Park’s music is about. When it comes to underrated artists, the reddit bass community is unanimous in defining it outrageous that the Denver producer isn’t already in everyone’s libraries. This month has seen the release of it latest effort, the jawdropping S5 EP, a collection of three heavy weapons by him and regular collaborator Sakuraburst, which foreruns their ‘Ancient Show’, about to debut in May at Emission Festival.

SYN

First appearing on the scene in February 2018, Montreal-based hell-hound SYN has quickly become one of the hottest commodities in the bass scene. Following the tried and tested routine of capturing listeners with jaw-dropping remixes of classic cuts like Nero’s ‘Doomsday’, Deadmau5’s ‘Ghost ‘n’ Stuff’ and Porter Robinson’s ‘Unison’, SYN has recently turned his attention to crafting his own obsidian originals. Working with what he calls #NEW RAVE, his productions often operate at a blistering pace, battering your brains with a whipped up mix of DnB, dub- and drum-step. Depraved, diabolic and doom-ridden, #NEW RAVE is nothing if not nefarious, no holds barred, no nonsense rage-worthy revelry. While he’s clearly found his groove already dropping five tracks in 2019, the standout SYN production in my eyes comes in ‘Psycho,’ a soul-crushing stomper, sure to inspire some salacious and sickening rave rituals. It’s time to come to terms with our weaknesses and admit we’re all synners…

ukko

In the spirit of spring, what better way to cap off another Focus Five segment than with ukko, a Switzerland-based producer who makes some of the hottest and liveliest beats. Recently hitting the 5k follower mark on SoundCloud and sharing the bouncy ‘skies’, ukko stated that he’s approximately halfway through the production of his upcoming Senses EP. Promising “dream pop/folk/trap,” the upcoming project is sure to put ukko on the map. With an uplifting signature highlighted by feel-good melodies and a future bounce essence, every ukko production is sure to put a smile on your face. With tracks such as his latest ‘atoms and void’, the talented artist always finds a way to keep his tracks fun and fresh, often playing with the tempo to engage his audience.

Chuurch and Strange Future have made a lot of noise with their body melting collaboration ‘Rabbit Hole.’ Since its release a lot of eyes have been stuck on them waiting for their next moves. We are so proud to be able to bring you to wonderland through the premiere of the official ‘Rabbit Hole’ remix pack. The ‘slowmo/space/bass/rap’ original has undergone five different treatments, that include four actual remixes from as many different artists, plus a special dub edit.

LICK is the one that kicks off the EP and, with a huge dose of bass steroids, immediately pumps ‘Rabbit Hole’ to a mid-tempo stomper, Rezz or I Am Sid style. Secondly comes Kotek with my personal favourite of the collection. Back from two stellar joint ventures with the superstars Rezz and Gramatik, the Canadian producer kills the competition throwing on the plate an unreal acid-infused post Dubstep remix. The drastic mutation from the unsettling but soft intro and breakdown, with their smooth groove and filtered voice, to the illuminating and haunting drop is the icing on the cake to this little creative masterpiece.

Next in line is SYN, bringing in their ‘new rave’ signature sound and preferring a dose of good old abrasiveness and brute force to the hypnotic effect of the original track. Despite the previous examples, here the slow pace ends up penalizing the success of the track that, with higher bpm, could have been way more impactful. After all these dark exercises there’s also space for some classy Tech House vibes courtesy of Canadians Cloverdale. With this remix, ‘Rabbit Hole’ ditches its bass niche and becomes appetizing to a way larger segment of public, who may not be used to the crazier stuff and instead is wide open for a classic housey beat. Ending things off is the dark, deep and pulsing DUB edit, which serves as a strong finale.

If, after RL Grime‘s mix, Don’t Die At Work and ADBC‘s compilations, there’s still space for quality music in your spooky Halloween playlists, don’t miss enjoying this Remix EP from start to finish. Stream below and grab it here.

You set a high bar for yourself when you only remix the greatest, and here, ‘greatest’ is not an exaggeration. SYN appeared out of thin air earlier this year with a remix for Feed Me’s ‘Headshot’ (a true classic), and has since remixed Nero, Noisia, Porter, Metallica, Deadmau5, Kill The Noise, and the list goes on. You either have to think extremely highly of yourself or be insanely talented to think your remixes of these artists will stand out, but SYN easily falls into the latter category. Tagging tracks as New Rave, SYN’s sound is a hybrid of just about every genre, with a prominent bass making itself heard in all of his (or her, or their) tracks.

After releasing their debut single last month, SYN returned yesterday with yet another monstrous original titled ‘Bullet’. In typical SYN fashion, the track kicks the energy to a whole new level, riddled with punchy synths and dark basslines. With the major bass house names such as JOYRYDE on hiatus, it’s energizing to see artists such as SYN stepping up to the plate to keep the genre alive. The producer’s hot streak does not appear to be coming to an end any time soon either, with this twelfth release of the last eight months standing out just as well as their previous tracks.
