Russian based musical assassin Mkhoyan Alik, better known as tapecut, has been on a killing spree with every track. Recently we witnessed his Pentrat EP release with the astounding Quality Goods Records. Today he returns to give his tapecut touch to the Carmack sound. “I didn’t set myself the goal of repeating Carmack’s style, but I wanted to do something close to that. In other words, to pay tribute to him for the fact that thanks to him, I understood in which direction I had to move since 2013. It was around that time that I first heard his work and it inspired me a lot for several years,” says Alik.

As an underground trap purveyor, it’s a great look to make projects for such legends. Often times I find us celebrating an artist post-mortem. Not to take away from the acclamations of those no longer with us, but there should be a heavier consistency of tributes to those artists still here with us today. Being such a huge influence to tapecut, it is our pleasure to premiere this homage. On a mission to explore the depths of music, tapecut pulls over along the way to give a shout out to Mr. Carmack in ‘S/O 2 CARMACK.’

With the fresh release of Mr. Carmack’s ‘don’t buy this‘ sample pack, it only felt right for tapecut to get after it. “I named the track that way because Carmack released his splice sample pack several months back. Dude, you won’t believe how many crazy sounds there are. As soon as it got into my hands, I immediately decided to try to do something similar to him. Still, I wonder how far my imagination can go,” tapecut says.

Beginning the track is a balanced melody. It subtly drifts right into meticulous percussion patterns and proper vocal chops. The fusion of his coherent track structure with the organic instrumentation provided by Carmack makes this song heavenly. It encapsulates everything we know trap for while also integrating that 2020 vision. ‘S/O 2 CARMACK’ paints a perfect picture to tapecut’s competence.

What we can expect next from the talented tapecut? He is looking to expand musically and provide sounds we have yet to hear from him. “As I said before the release of my album Pentrat, I plan on moving into a more commercial sound. I say that I will start writing house and similar styles. My sound will take on a more beautiful and complex picture. Over the years that I have been writing music, I have developed certain rules for myself that can help the music of any artist to be heard. Something like the secret of a successful track. Of course, rules are there to be broken. Especially when it comes to music, where you can create and write everything you can imagine. But no one bothers to do this if you have some kind of basis that you can rely on when writing, for example: track structure, speed, rhythm, tonality, chord progression, words and their simplicity, and many other things! In general, I think I have something to surprise you in the near future! ” tapecut concludes.

Heavy-hitter tapecut is back with a brand new project. His new EP Pentrat is out now on Quality Goods Records. tapecut is a unique artist who can create many different feelings within his work. He’s known for his brilliant sound design and organic rhythms. Hypnotizing any listener to their core. There’s no stopping this man from leaving his mark on the underground electronic scene. And this new EP is pushing his vision and style farther than ever.

“I really like to travel. This album is generally about travel. And I started writing it when I was in New York in 2018. This trip brought a lot of impressions and emotions into my life. This gave the impetus. And it is also obvious that this year travel to many countries of the world has become simply physically impossible due to the situation with the virus. Hopefully in the near future I will start traveling even more and see even more new countries and people.” – tapecut

‘Pentrat’ has many characteristics and qualities. From the use of brass instruments, strings and of course impactful drums, this is a delicious feast of frequencies. The first track called ‘Beast’ lives up to the name. With a spacious and beautiful atmospheric intro, he wastes no time in introducing heavy elements. Showing everyone what he’s made of. Once the drop hits, it blows you away into another realm. Leaving a huge smile on your face. And incorporating playful melodies to raise the excitement leaves the audience asking for more. A brilliant opening.

Next up is ‘Faded.’ A cinematic introduction with an Egyptian vibe. Making you feel you’re wandering in the desert, searching for a purpose. Then we hear a catchy processed vocal, leading to the chorus. Hitting you like a train. A blend of beefy sound design and fitting drums. Filling every space with fun samples and unique sound choices. Once the breakdown happens, we’re immersed into the world he has created. A feeling making the listener one with this piece. The second drop holds similar qualities as the first, but with its’ own story to tell. Taking us into the end with wonder and awe.

Then we get into the track ‘Rumble.’ The piano in the beginning hits your emotions and mindset of expectations. Turning into an energetic build, it prepares us for an anthem. The drop is a blast of classic trap horns together in unison to from a catchy melody. Blended together well with 808 bass. This will leave any trap music lover happy and fulfilled. Showing appreciation to an old school trap feel brings the song together perfectly. The breakdown takes us back to the vibe in the beginning, but with more impact and feeling. Taking us into the second half, tapecut unleashes the brass weapons again for a second round. But this time, he incorporates a jersey club section to keep the arrangement alive and new.

Finally, he leaves us off with ‘Brklyn.’ He channels the dark and mysterious feelings of New York City. A song having a bit of everything. From distorted bass leads, to future bass elements, he brought it all together in a precise and organic fashion. Leaving you stunned and impressed with every second. A beautiful way to end off the EP.

The Pentrat EP is a special and wondrous work of art. tapecut showed us all who he is within this world. His passions for traveling and music is clearly on display. We’re excited to see and hear what he creates next. Make sure to go support by streaming the new EP on Spotify, SoundCloud and more.

Nearly six months ago to this day, we were allowed the pleasure of premiering the impressive ‘tengaah‘ by tapecut. Now he is returning with an explosive eight track remix pack that allows for a variety of innovative artists to provide a fresh take on it. While each track can speak for its own as far as quality, it is the producers chosen that I want to dive into further. Here’s why you should not only take the time to listen to each rendition, but to also look at each artists individually.

First up is a DJ, musician and recording producer by the name of CVPELLV. His career in music started as early as the age of 14, as he began as a DJ. In 2000 he decided to contribute to his break-dancing team further by producing their music for them. Growing up in Russia and growing as a producer, he moved into making hip hop and would become known by key hip hop figures in his area. An artist you may not expect to be included in a remix compilation like this, yet are impressed with upon further inspection. CVPELLV utilizes the intro to throw some bars over before smashing the gas pedal all the way down. Dissecting the samples even further and chopping them to pieces in the first half before the second half switch up is grade A inclusion to this pack.

This next artist I could write about all day long and is by far one of the elites of the underground, LYNY. Someone who has put in a substantial amount of work and seemingly came out of nowhere in the previous years, yet has been at this for over seven years now. Mind you he is 19, meaning he started as early as age 12 when he began to explore this hobby and passion. Since arriving on our watch list we have been fortunate to premiere multiple tracks of his as well as landing a guest mix. If you know LYNY you know he had to hit us with a gritty trap flip while also merging melodies between those speaker rattling knocks.

Following up LYNY is Russian based producer ULISME. What makes this one an impressive inclusion is how under the radar he actually is. Having only 87 SoundCloud followers yet 30+ originals and remixes it’s a mystery as to how he doesn’t have more followers. Going back through his catalog is an exploration of diversity as you’ll come across house, trap, dubstep and even some future bass. In addition to being involved with the tapecut remix pack, he can also be heard featured in the latest Team Supreme Beat Cypher in Vol. 161.

Artist feature number four is one who goes by Cloudgrumppa. A man of mystery that leaves me curious as to how tapecut even discovered this artist. With a following of only 17 on SoundCloud, his bio reads “Load Soon…”. While we may not know much about this cloud of bass, his addition may be one of my favorites. The distorted bass crunch carries a smooth vibe that causes a natural head bob. The forward-thinking breakdown is as heavy as the original track while forging a crisp trap adaptation. What happens in the last drop is what really won me over. It feels as if Flume had a trap lovechild as the distorted knocks are still available yet this time is paired with a future beats frequency.

With the next artist comes the next genre. THREESLASHER takes the ‘tengaah’ we know and dissolves it into a world of Drum and Bass. Fellow Russian based producer THREESLASHER has but only three tracks released and each one contains a massive mix down and mastering that seem to utilize every element a speaker is capable of. If you’re a fan of DNB I’d recommend keeping up with this one as it seems they are just getting started.

Moving into the last half of the compilation, we run into Hermigra. What makes this one stand out a bit from the rest is him being a hip hop producer and beat maker opposed to an EDM producer. That being said you would expect a heavy 808 and intricate percussion patterns. However, what happens is quite contrasting to their every day sound. While it starts out serene and undisturbed it eventually meets turmoil as it molds into a heavy bass tune.

In track number seven we meet the producer known as Hybridas. It appears that this remix is their first release which is a huge look. Not only to be paired with the rest of this creative collective but to be put on by tapecut speaks volumes among the underground. Hybridas gives us a bass bop full of swing that is as heavy as it is forward-thinking. The proper package for what FUXWITHIT is all about.

Last but definitely not least is 15 year old production prodigy Cylriel, with nearly 40 tracks released. With a release record like this, one can only imagine the amount of level-ups made during this time. Similar to ULISME, you can find a wide array of genres released anywhere from house to lo-fi hip-hop to drum and bass and everything in between. Cylriel gives us a heavy dose of what feels like bass from a futuristic era in time. A display of high class sound design that creates a want to hear the rest of the song. This one is definitely in the running for a favorite remix of mine as well as making a new Cylriel follower out of me.

tapecut does an exceptional job at choosing these artists who’s personalities are able to shine through in their music. Because of this, each remix brings a new listening experience. This compilation contains works from all over including the USA, Belarus, Russia and Poland. If you’re a fan of the underground (which I assume that’s why you are here to begin with) then I strongly suggest giving this remix compilation a full listen as well as checking out each artist involved.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/1095191812″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

After a quiet back half of 2019, tapecut is starting off the new year making some serious noise with his new single ‘tengaah.’ “It’s difficult to describe, but I think that this is a flight of thoughts that dissipates like a bunch and then gathers in one place called drop,” tapecut tells about the new release. Opening quietly, the enchanting synths gradually fade in, almost like thoughts transitioning from your subconscious to conscious mind. As time passes, the haze begins to roll away and everything become increasingly clearer. ‘tengaah’ builds with precise purpose before the acapella vocal sample that inspired the track’s name provides a tribal vibe and feeds into the drop. The first drop is beastly; wonky bass and pristine percussion intertwine with perfectly sprinkled in “damn” and “shit” samples that embody the listeners likely reactions to hearing this one. The break brings down the energy and ramps up with a cinematic approach. An “I wanna hear the drop” vocal leads listeners into the hard-hitting finale that caps things off flawlessly.

“In 2019, a lot happened in my life and there were very few releases. I want to adjust the balance and please my listeners more often,” tapecut tells us about his plans for this year. Given the impressiveness of ‘tengaah,’ we couldn’t be happier to hear he intends to be releasing a lot more. Stream below.

Russian producer tapecut is no stranger to taking classic hits and turning them into fresh slappers. ‘richbwoii w/ t1r’ and ‘give it to me’ remain getting plays from some of the hottests DJs around despite being released a year, and six months ago respectively. Building upon his knack for flipping older gems comes ‘weesh,’ a knocking bop that’s constructed around Skee-Lo’s ‘I Wish’. Opening with lush synths and groovy drums, a dreamy female vocal lures us in with a siren song that teases what we’re about to get into. When the drop hits Skee-Lo’s familiar raps are backed by a pulsing trap beat that’s gritty but still manages to create a warm-weather feel. “I think this track will be a great soundtrack for this summer. After all, it is hot, burning and vigorous! Moreover, I promised that this year will be the same as this summer (see my note on the track, ‘give it to me,’ which I released at the beginning of the year),” tapecut says expanding on the vibe he looked to create with ‘weesh.’

Looking for a bit deeper insight into the track? tapecut breaks down the highlights saying “I would like to draw listeners’ attention to the drums, which sound lively, although they are made from a very simple loop which you can check here. I would like the listener to get the impression that a real drummer is playing. In addition, I recorded my adlibs at the beginning of the track. Little bit later I realized that for some reason my voice sounds like a 50 Cent voice.”

So does tapecut deeply identify with the song’s vocals, wishing he was a little bit taller?“I wish I was a baller, ha ha. Just kidding. In fact, I wanted to be taller a couple of years ago. But now I began to love myself more and appreciate what I have. Speaking of this, soon we will start shooting a video for the Weiture track, which is dedicated to this topic and not only.” Love yourself, love this track, summer is almost here and it’s heating up!

Russian producer tapecut is a low key production powerhouse. In the past few years he’s landed a track on Quality Goods Records first compilation, competed in the Goldie Awards and dropped some of the hottest remixes out (‘richbwoii w/ t1r,’ ‘this is america’). His tracks have also landed support from RL Grime, GTA, UZ and more. With all that said, he’s truly just getting started. With two EPs in the works for 2019 already, expect to see tapecut taking over the trap and bass scene. Ahead of the releases we connected with him for an exclusive guest mix and interview. The mix is a showcase of his own work with 4 IDs sprinkled amongst originals and remixes. We also spoke to tapecut about his experience at the Goldie Awards, what it’s like in Russia, his upcoming projects and more. Check it out below.

Tell us about the mix. What was your goal when putting it together? What should we expect?

I want to share with people new facets of music, in which you can hear interesting melodic moves in combination with unusual chips. In general, this mix represents the style of music that I singled out for myself and continue to develop. You will hear a lot of bass sounds that will make your body move.

Were you born and raised in Russia? How do you like living there?

No, I was not born in Russia, I was born in Armenia, but when I was one year old, I moved with my family to St. Petersburg, Russia. To be honest, living here is fine with me for 40 percent. I would certainly like to move to Los Angeles or New York to work with great prospects and communicate with the right people because there are some difficulties with this. On the one hand, in America there are very big prospects for an artist, on the other hand, in Russia at the moment there is an open field and you can do anything.

What’s the electronic music scene like in Russia?

The electronic scene here is quite diverse and people write completely different genres here, but most of them are divided into 2 types: those who want to stay here and write what they write, and the second type is people who want to leave here trying to make their dreams come true.

I realized that I need to put in 10 times more effort than I am now so that people would hear about me not only in Russia but throughout the world.

Last year you had the chance to compete in the beat battle at the Goldie Awards. What was the experience like? Has it had any major impacts on your career since?

Yes, I was endlessly lucky that I got there as a member. This event gave me a lot of experience in life, including in music. For example, I realized that I need to put in 10 times more effort than I am now so that people would hear about me not only in Russia but throughout the world. At first, I doubted whether to apply for participation in the competition or not, but my wife, with whom we married a few months before the event, helped me with this choice. Thanks to her and faith in myself, I was able to take part in Goldie Wards. I also liked the fact that I was able to communicate with very experienced guys such as A-Trak, CRAZE, and many others.

You’ve got a collab EP on the way with NXSTY. How did that come to be? What made you want to work together? What should we expect from it in terms of sound and direction?

We started working on our joint album of 4 tracks relatively recently and it happened absolutely spontaneously. I don’t remember where I already noticed him, but I do remember exactly that I liked his approach to music and my unusual style and I decided to experiment with him and release a hybrid of our two styles. I think this should be very powerful and unusual.

I am preparing another EP for UZ’s Quality Goods Records. In this album, I want to show that my sound began to change with long strides and truly shake the modern listener.

You also have another EP in the works? Can you tell us anything about it now?

Yes, that’s right. I am preparing another EP for UZ’s Quality Goods Records. In this album, I want to show that my sound began to change with long strides and truly shake the modern listener.

You recently tweeted that you enjoy listening to your own music. How often do you listen to your own music vs. the works of others?

Yes, I remember having such a tweet and I don’t refuse it. I really think that we are writing the music that we would like to listen to. That is why I wrote it. I myself do not often listen to my songs, but it happens precisely in those moments in which you feel any strong emotions that you have ever wanted to express in your songs.

Your tracks have been getting support from some pretty heavy hitters. What’s the most surprising place that you’ve heard your work?

Yes, a lot of guys who supported my tracks, I remember I heard my tracks on BBС Radio 1Xtra, in the mixes of GTA, Fabian Mazur, and many more. It’s nice, once again making sure that you write music that even advanced guys listen to.

You’ve tweeted a fair bit about Skrillex. Is he your favourite producer? If so why? If not who is?

Skrillex is not my favorite producer. He is one of ten of my favorites along with Virtual Riot, Mr. Carmack, James Blake, Herzeloyde and many more.

I love cooking…I love to learn something new all the time…I love to swim

What do you enjoy most outside of music?

I love cooking because I have four months experience in the restaurant space.Other than cooking I love to learn something new all the time. If possible, read books, study social media marketing because at the time I studied as a marketer. I love to swim in the pool because it helps relax your muscles and thoughts. To be honest, I have not tried very much in this life, but I would like to. Most of the time, I’m busy writing music and improving myself.

What are you excited about for the remainder of 2019?

In 2019, I would like to change my style and sound to something newer. Meet a lot of interesting people, do something that I have never done, and continue to develop in music. Moreover, we will soon have a clip for the song ‘IMMORTAL,’ but before that my second sample pack will be released TAPEСUT DRUM KIT VOL.2. In addition to everything, a little later, a collection of remixes on the Weiture track is released, in which 10 very promising producers from the CIS took part.

P.S. Whoever does not know that I have released a PROJECT PACK, you can get it here.

Especially when it comes to the experimental scene, it’s only a matter of understanding the possibilities. With this premiere, we’d like to put the spotlight on three fine gentlemen who have taken up this cause and attitude in the best way possible. Soulecist, Tapecut and Xanubis are on a different level. Established names synonymous with a certain freedom of expression, that borrows quality as a foundation of the creative process, no matter if it’s applied to a gritty industrial stompers or a R&B ballads.
