On Saturday night The Hoxton hosted its final party. After 6 years of pushing the nightlife and music scene forward, the iconic venue closed its doors for the final time. For those unfamiliar, The Hoxton has been the hub for forward-thinking electronic music in Toronto. They acted as the home base for some of the greatest shows the city has ever seen. Whether it was bringing new acts to the city for the first time or helping to provide Toronto talent with a space to flourish. The venue helped break a sea of talented locals ranging from Hunter Siegel and Rezz to Keys N Krates, Thugli, Pusher + so many more. And who can forget their legendary after parties? With everyone from Drake and Kanye, to Diplo & Skrillex turning up in the intimate space. The impact that the venue had on the city is remarkable and although it’s gone it definitely will never be forgotten.

In order to properly say goodbye you know they had to throw one last rager to go down in history. It was only fitting that Hunter Siegel’s No Neon took over the club one last time. The event series has been a staple in the city for the past two years with Hunter bringing through some of the best new talent and throwing down legendary impromptu B2Bs. With Hunter scheduled for an open to close set and special guests practically a given, the club was packed from the time it opened. I arrived before 10:30 and the line-up was already massive. There was a bittersweet energy in the air; a mixture of excitement and sadness. There was a huge buzz outside with everyone talking about who might show up for a quick guest set and discussing their disbelief that this was truly the last night out at The Hoxton. Every person you talked to shared the same sentiment, “I can’t believe this is it”.I got in just before 11 and it was already filling in nicely. Fast forward 30 minutes and it was packed with Hunter Siegel throwing down heavy. If it were any other night, you would of thought that it was easily 1:00 am. Considering the size and intensity of the crowd, he didn’t need to hold back, saving things for later, he just let it flow. This was underscored by him joking on the mic about wanting to save ‘Bad and Boujee’ for later and then dropping it before midnight. Although the special guests were a highlight to many, it needs to be mentioned that Hunter deserves an incredible amount of respect. Not many DJs can murder a party for 6+ hours and he did just that. Now on to the special guests. Going to the event everyone knew the finale was destined to see another iconic B2B session featuring some of Canada’s finest. Things kicked off with Grandtheft and never slowed down. From them debuting Hunter’s ‘Easy Go’ remix to Zed’s Dead’s DC straight up slaughtering things. The stage became a revolving door of incredible acts. Omar Linx hopped on the table to deliver some classics before getting into his most recent smash ‘Keep It Mello’. Oh and Sleepy Tom and Keys N Krates decided to drop in, cause why not right? In many ways the event was legendary but also felt like another night at The Hoxton. I say that not to disrespect the finale, but rather to highlight the fact that incredible B2Bs, guest appearances and overall amazing vibes are what made The Hoxton the best club in Toronto. Although it’ll never be replaced, let’s the hope its spirit can live on (likely at Velvet Underground). To all the DJs, organizers and staff, I thank you for 6 incredible years and a very special finale. #RIPHoxton.

If you don’t know already, The Hoxton is closing. One of the closing parties this weekend was headlined by bass house DJ, JOYRYDE, with local support from deep and dark house duo KRFW and G-house DJ Maddmon. Arriving on site around 11:00pm the line was already backed up with eager party goers. I wasn’t anticipating there being a large crowd, but I got a feeling that I might be wrong when I arrived. It was ironic seeing the THE HOXTON logo not illuminated and made me realize the situation, they’re closing down, it’s happening.

Maddmon was on the decks first with his G House style, shrouded in the shadows of the lights he provided a groovy and soft bouncy atmosphere to get the party started. Attendees took little time to start dancing and getting comfortable for what was to come.

Up next, the dapper Toronto duo KRFW (wild guess that stands for curfew) brought that dark and deep house to the party. To set the atmosphere they came out in the darkness of the room illuminated by the blood red LED’s in their masks. The crowd surely enjoyed the aesthetics and atmosphere as they cheered loudly, ready to take the party to the next level.

Look, it’s a Pixelwhip! This was my first time seeing something like this in all my years, I didn’t even know these thing existed. It was pretty dope and different from your typical glow stick or LED glove. Here is a website I quickly Googled that sells them.

The man of the night JOYRYDE was up next. The crowd grew louder in excitement because we all knew what was coming, the party was about to go to 100 and that was exactly what happened. JOYRYDE dropped his bass heavy sound on the house and the crowd reacted in kind, with attendees cheering, jumping, moshing and head banging like no one was watching, it was a blast to say the least. He played not only his own tracks, but threw in some bangers such as Desiigner’s ‘Panda’ and Drake’s ‘Back to Back’ which the crowd responded to with some karaoke. JOYRYDE’s high energy on stage was infectious as it carried the crowd through the night without skipping a beat. Time seemed to cease to exist and when least expected, it was over. It was one heck of a party and I am proud to say that I was able to attend one of The Hoxton’s final parties. It pains me to know the end is near, but there will always be the great memories at 69 Bathurst St. On to newer and better things!

The Hoxton is closing. The rumours have proven true and the iconic club will close its doors at the end of the month. What has been whispered throughout the city for the past few weeks was confirmed on Embrace’s social accounts and Richard Lambert’s (Hoxton’s co-owner) interview with Now Toronto. For the past 6 years The Hoxton was the city’s best night spot. Whether it was hosting the best up-and-comers, epic after parties (from Festivals to Kanye West) or the plethora of local talent. The list of artists that shut it down is nothing short of legendary, just take a look at the picture below. To close things off with a fitting bang, The Hoxton has a stacked line-up for the next three weekends. Starting with Kill The Noise this Friday and EDX Saturday, it will continue to build momentum with bass house heavyweights Joyryde and Autoerotique on the 20th and 21st. Finally capping things off comes Deorro on the 27th and Hunter Siegel’s No Neon as the grande finale on the 28th. If you’re in or around Toronto I’d strongly recommended attending the No Neon closing party. The series has never disappointed and considering the reputation they’ve built for insane special guests you can guarantee it will be an unforgettable finale. You can cop tickets for all the final shows here.

This past Saturday was a night that defied expectations several times over. The event was Anna Lunoe’s HYPERHOUSE tour, which saw her touching down at The Hoxton along with DJ Sliink and Vindata. When I saw the line-up I knew I had to be there. I’ve been waiting to see Sliink since 2012, enjoy Vindata and kept hearing about Anna Lunoe. I expected Sliink to murder it, and for the other two to be good, but I greatly undervalued the talent of Vindata and Anna Lunoe. The whole night was incredible from beginning to end. Here’s how it all went down.

Vindata – Shot By Will Selviz

Vindata – Shot By Will Selviz

I got in just before 11 and the crowd was still pretty sparse. The mood was laid-back as people socialized and grabbed drinks while Local DJ/Producer Cosella was warming things up with some deep bass. As Vindata took the stage it seemed the venue instantly grew more packed. The spead out crowd was magnetized to the front of the room. As I moved closer, I warned my brother that their set may be a bit slow for his tastes (I turned out to be very wrong). I’m a casual Vindata fan and expected a mixture of chill trap and future bass. What they delivered was well beyond my expectations in both quality and energy. Yeah, they played some future bass, most notably their Mija collab ‘Better’ (which killed), but they took it so much further. From mashing Green Day into Moombahton, to ‘Ni**as In Paris’ into flute-ridden trap and Mr. Carmack. They started slow, pulling the crowd in and had it in full party mode shortly after. A ‘Panda’ x ‘Purple Lamborghini’ mash-up went off and they even had us crankin’ that Soldier Boy. Midway through the set Anna Lunoe popped up to show some love, and as their set neared it’s end, Sliink came through with some shots of Henny to celebrate with the duo and warm himself up. The scene was a great display of camaraderie and love between the DJs that only made it feel like more of an inclusive party for all.

DJ Sliink – Shot by Will Selviz

Anna Lunoe x DJ Sliink – Shot by Will Selviz

As Sliink took over the decks, he let everyone know where he’s from with ‘Nwxrk’ (Jersey!), the beautiful build and vocals gave way to the rawness of A$AP Ferg’s ‘Work’ and it was on. Sliink showed love to OWSLA boss Skrillex with his classic ‘Cinema’ flip and fellow label mate Yogi with ‘Burial’. With flips of ‘Hotline Bling’ and ‘Show Me Love’ Sliink proved that there’s a Jersey remix for everything. When I heard Ma$e come in for ‘Mo Money, Mo Problems’ it was a wrap. It’s not often you here Ma$e and Skrillex in the same set, but I assure you it’s something special. I went into this set expecting Sliink to kill it, and that’s exactly what he did. Lunoe came out once more to party with Sliink before it was her time to take over.

I have a confession. I’ve been sleeping on Anna Lunoe. She’s been on my radar as someone I need to check out and dive into, but I’ve never took the time. That said, I went into her set expecting to see a pretty good house set that would leave me satisfied. What I got instead was straight up fucking wow’d. Anna Lunoe is incredible. From her selection, to her mixing and her energy, she’s everything that makes a DJ great. She bounced across genres as effortlessly as she did the stage. Moving from O.T. Genesis to Gesaffelstein, ‘I Love Kanye’ into rave house and classic Prodigy into Getter x Ghastly. She kept the filthy club vibe from Sliink going for some time and even dropped some Athletixx. She brought in some classic breakbeats before dropping them into some crazy new shit. She proved she can play anything with ease and without losing the crowd for a second. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any more crazy, Hunter Siegel and Autoerotique rolled up for an impromptu b2b with Lunoe. This just added to the ill house party feel that engulfed the night. When the lights finally came on and the music stopped there was no way to feel other than wow’d. HYPERHOUSE was one hell of night.

This past Sunday, Mura Masa descended upon The Hoxton to treat fans to his eclectic blend of hip-hop-infused electronic music. It was my first time hitting The Hoxton on Sunday and wasn’t sure what to expect. Arriving just after 9:30, the venue was already starting to fill in. As Michl took the stage, everyone huddled in tight for an intimate set. His downtempo performance centred around live vocals and synths. He encompassed a James Blake-esq vibe that illicited strong reactions from the crowd. As he played his final note he practically ran off the stage without a word. It was an interesting exit to say the least.

With anticipation building between the set changeover, the excitement was well heard when Mura Masa took the stage and opened things up with ‘Love$ick’. Without Rocky in the building, Bonzai came bursting onto the stage spitting his verse with intensity and conviction. I wondered how the vocals for Mura Masa’s songs would be handled and this approach could’t have been better. As Bonzai left the stage it allowed the focus to shift back to Mura Masa. As the Middle Eastern sample drifted in on ‘Lotus Eater’ things got heavy with an all out assault on the drums. This wasn’t you average DJ set, Mura Masa’s show has him moving between drums and synthesizers recreating the music live. I must say, seeing him play live made me truly realize how stellar the drums throughout his work are.

A few songs later, Bonzai made her return to the stage for ‘Low’ proving that she can cover any rapper she chooses. Further proving her vocal talents came ‘What If I Go’ and ‘Love For That’. Two of the most impressive tracks of the year, were exceptional to hear live. The combination of strong, emotive vocals, with the powerful production swept over the venue boosting seratonin levels to extreme heights. After hearing these tracks it became clear that this wasn’t just a Mura Masa set, this was a Mura Masa & Bonzai set. They’re a dynamic duo that build off each other, each bringing something special to take the show to the next level. Masa is the one man band and Bonzai is the emcee. In between tracks and breaks Bonzai rocked the mic with ease, getting the crowd super amped with collectives claps, wild dance moves and an unrelenting energy. All while Mura Masa killed it behind her, freaking his keys and slamming the drums with precision. Masa did take a moment to hop in the mic himself to let us know he was going to “play a new one”. The track hit with epic waves of bass while packing in his signature originality.

As the night drew to a close the lights dimmed and the speakers grew silent. A silence which was quickly defeated by loud cheers from pleased fans. They closed the night out with ‘Firefly’ and it felt like there was magic in the air. There were smiles around, a collective grooving and even a few people in the back shuffling with an inspiring enthusiasm. Mura Masa has become one of the most highly lauded producers out and his live show, with the help on Bonzai, delivers just what the fans want.

London based producer TroyBoi has been taking over the internet and DJs’ sets for the past couple of years. His blend of experimental electronic sounds has made him one of the most highly regarded producers out. After much anticipation, Troy has finally hit the road for a full blown North American tour. The past weekend The Mantra Tour touched down in Toronto to set the 6 on fire.

Taking place at The Hoxton, the show’s scale was smaller than that of several other tour stops but that meant a greater sense of intimacy. As I walked into the venue just after midnight I heard a wave of excited screams signifying that TroyBoi had just taken the stage. As ‘Grimey’ began to engulf the venue, fans waited with an eager anticipation for the slow build to drop into the head-splitting sounds that they came for. Although the tour promised all TroyBoi music that still meant he’d be rinsing out his own remixes. ‘TTU’ delivered a devastating punch that made the venue feel like it was ready to explode. The energy was on 10 only 3 tracks in and the dance floor was teetering on a mosh pit. Troy smoothed things out a few cuts later with the garage inspired ‘And Wot’.

A large part of what makes TroyBoi’s music so impactful is the blend of beautiful, often ethereal soundscapes juxtaposed against his neck-breaking drops. ‘Don’t Be Judging (MJ Edition)’ embodied this to the fullest extent while ‘Medusa Dayz’ proved how much of animal Troy truly is. As he drifted throughout his set it became apparent that The Mantra Tour was really a testament to TroyBoi’s legendary catalog and a trip into Troy’s world. A sphere of spiritual undertones, distorted and deepened vocals, devastating drums and soul rattling bass. Taking the experience up even further were the incredible visuals and stellar dancers. The latter brought a variance of costumes and moves that were entrancing, engulfing and rousing.

You could tell how many true fans were in building; whether they were cheering after hearing a couple notes from the next record, singing along to familiar vocals (‘After Hours,’ ‘Wallz’ ‘ili’) or going hard as fuck on the dance floor. Troy incited the crowd over the mic with quick prompts and furthered the excitement by coming in front of the booth to slap hands and bust some dance moves to keep the party flowing. ‘O.G.’ crushed the club as expected and I’m pretty sure I witnessed a guy momentarily lose his mind to the insane funhouse sounds of ‘Do You Love Me’. TroyBoi also made sure to bring out long-time collaborator and fellow SoundSnob icekream for the fun.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/266752996″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”200″ iframe=”true” /]

As the night drew to a close TroyBoi ended things with the tour’s namesake track ‘Mantra’. The crystal bowl vibrations, exotic vocals and pulsating bass awakened a hypnotic hype that cast a spell over the crowd. As Troy thanked fans for the love he received, chants began to build asking for one more song. TroyBoi did not oblige but took the remaining time to hit the floor and chop it up with fans, snapping pics and having real conversations. It’s not often you see an artists taking the time at 2:00am to chat with their fans but it shows just how much Troy cares. If you’re lucky enough to have TroyBoi visiting your city, don’t miss a chance to take a trip into the world that is The Mantra Tour.

In addition to attending the show we has the honour of connecting with TroyBoi for an in depth conversation. Look out for the full video coming soon!

The description for Mr. Carmack’s Control tour is absolutely perfect: “This tour is all about experiencing the good music, enjoying yourselves and your friends, no hype. Come listen, discuss, drink, mingle, DANCE, smoke, meet new people, explore ideas and have fun.” This is exactly what happened on Thursday night when Mr. Carmack and London’s finest duo, Stooki Sound, took over the Hoxton, absolutely bodying the intimate show. Local DJ/Producer Hrmxny kicked things off with a strong set that moved from laidback and chill to hard hitting as the night progressed. He effortlessly jumped from familiar tracks (‘All Day’, ‘Recognize’, ‘Crank That’, ‘IDFWU’ to jersey club and dirty trap anthems (‘Bricks’, ‘The Gift, ‘Hand’s Up’). It was the perfect way to get the audience engaged and ready for the headliners without getting too turnt up too early.

Stooki Sound took the stage in contrasting black and white tee shirts adorned with their logo. They wasted no time blasting fans with the gritty sounds they’d come to see. The set list was a perfect mixture of their own productions stamped with the “Stooki Sound” byte and a ton of heaters from fellow trap gods. Only a few minutes into the set and the venue was on fire. The crowd was jumpin’ like crazy and the floor was flexing like trampoline; seemingly giving the crowd extra bounce to get higher and more energy to get wild. Remixes of ‘Test Me’ and ‘Bugatti’ were massive and ‘Bing Bong’ incited a sea of “trap arms”. Prior to dropping ‘Mosh Pit’ they said they wanted to see the craziest mosh pit ever. As the beat dropped the crowd obliged, getting stupid rowdy without being overtly violent.

Stooki Sound shot by Hector Vasquez for FUXWITHIT.

The vibe that the UK duo created was insane. I personally haven’t seen the Hoxton that turnt up since Baauer’s first performance there. Not only was the mixing and song selection incredible, but their energy was unstoppable. They perfectly balanced interacting and engaging with fans without letting it distract from the work they put it on the decks. This was best illustrated as Jelacee soaked the crowd with two waterbottles as DJ Lukey dropped GTA’s massive ‘Hard House’. There were too many incredible tracks to list them all but ‘Soundclash’ and Stooki Sound’s ‘Work It’ remix both murdered. As Carmack took the stage to set up, Stooki Sound closed things out. A brief pause in the music had the London duo looking confused as Carmack pointed to the decks with a smile. They quickly corrected whatever caused the brief silence and brought back some heat. A minor misstep in an otherwise flawless performance took nothing away from them.

Mr. Carmack shot by Hector Vasquez for FUXWITHIT.

The transition between the duo and Mr. Carmack was seamless. He opened his set with a slow melodic groove that transitioned into some fierce hard hitting grittiness. Just a track or two in there was a brief slip up where the music stopped, it seemed he may have paused the track playing when trying to cue up the next one. It was quickly corrected and fans didn’t seemed phased, plus in an era of pre-recorded sets it’s nice to know big names are actually DJing. It seemed Carmack’s set was not preplanned at all, as he scrolled through his Traktor library finding tracks that fit the vibe at the moment and drag and dropped them with undeniable swag (I didn’t think you could make drag and dropping files cool, but he did). Through the set the fanfare was immense, it was clear that the fans were given exactly what they came for. Carmack moved from melodic chill vibes into the signature dark trap sound that he pioneered. Coming up with a tracklist for a Carmack set is no easy task, the artist has hundreds of originals and remixes, many of which are unreleased or no longer available online. What I will say is Carmack delivered the sound you’d expect and the crowd drank it up like a cool beer on a warm day. Mr. Carmack’s groundbreaking work as producer has deservedly granted him headliner status, but Stooki Sound’s energy and skills as DJ’s may have stolen the show. If you have a chance to see either DJs I would jump at it, as it’s something you won’t soon forget.

On Friday (Jan. 30th), two of Toronto’s finest electronic music acts returned home for a show that was nothing short of incredible. Thugli and Grandtheft took over The Hoxton; one of the best clubs in the city. If you haven’t been to the venue I’d suggest you take a trip as soon as possible. Relatively small in size, it allows for intimate shows that are always packed but never overcrowded. The night got off to a strong start with up-and-coming Toronto producer/DJ Pusher. Though he’s becoming well known for his video game inspired, up-beat future bass, the DJ showed his versatility rinsing out a wide range of music. From a dope flip of Ludacris’ ‘Party Girls’ to RL Grime, Alison Wonderland, Jai Wolf, Loudpvck and more. That’s not to say he didn’t find time to play out a few ridiculously cheery future bass grooves. I’ve been a huge fan and supporter of the genre but it was my first time seeing it pop off in the club. I was pleased to see how well received the sound was, with people grinning ear-to-ear and swaying to the serotonin inducing vibes. As Pusher’s set came to a close, Thugli geared up as the crowd continued to pour in.

The Toronto duo wasted no time giving a quick introduction to the crowd and moving into some heat. Watching them DJ is truly a pleasure. They are one of the few duos in the industry that actually spin on two separate sets of turntables. It makes for an interesting performance that allows for greater flexibility. The space between seems great but their chemistry and skill make it seem almost non-existent. Throughout the set you can see them jumping back and forth for a quick word, throwing each other hand signals or even yelling across stage to make sure every mix is perfect. The set was high energy and rooted in hip-hop/trap but saw many directions. Their ‘FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt’ remix had everyone in the house singing along. The energy carried into ‘TTU’ which they expertly mixed the vocals into ‘DJ Turn It Up (TIGHTTRAXX & ETC!ETC! Remix)’ and then completely annihilated the club with twerk anthem ‘Bap U’. Tapping into their hip-hop roots they played club classics like ‘Ruff Ryder Anthem’ and ‘Move Bitch’. After a few more trap bangers they moved into a house section that was deeper than a d-bags v-neck. Memorable tracks included ‘Cruise Control’ and Scotty Boy Lozenzo’s ‘Coke Diet’. Coming out of the depths they got into a short section of hard house which had the club jumpin’. As a cloud of sweet smoke began to engulf the venue it seemed perfectly fitting that Thugli dropped a section dedicated to the smokers, mixing ‘We Dem Boyz’ into ‘The Next Episode’ and Thugger’s ‘Stoner’. As their set came to a close they went out with a bang dropping their ‘Boy Oh Boy’ and ‘Hella Hoes’ remixes. All in all this was one of the best sets I’ve seen in a long time and proved that Thugli are among the most talented DJ duos in the business.

The expectations were set immensely high from the previous two sets but Grandtheft wasn’t phased, delivering a stellar set in his own right. Known for his complete disregard for genres, his set flowed effortlessly across bpms and styles (even including some jersey club). A number of his well known remixes (‘0 to 100’, ‘Summer’, ‘Sweet Nothing’, ‘Studio’) got major love and sing alongs from the crowd. Demonstrating his ability to mix in new tracks with ease, Grandtheft slipped in Big Sean & Drake’s ‘Blessings’, a track which dropped less than 24 hours prior. Moving into some deep house the DJ dropped Zed Dead’s ‘Lost You’ as the duo came to the front of the stage to turn up to it. It was incredible to see so many of Toronto’s finest showing love and having fun on stage. Grandtheft perfectly balanced fan interaction with champagne sipping and putting in serious work on the decks; always making sure that the perfect transition or mash-up was top priority. Speaking of mash-ups he dropped quite a few that impressed including a banging blend of TNGHT’s ‘Higher Ground’ with Kanye’s ‘Get Em High’. That was definitely a highlight (sorry). A final moment that can’t be overlooked was when the DJ dropped the Lion King’s ‘Circle of Life’ into RL Grime’s ‘Core’ truly proving that other DJs don’t do the shit that he do.

All in all it was an amazing night for Toronto music. Pusher proved to be a promising talent to watch, Thugli nearly stole the show and Grandtheft proved why he’s one of Canada’s finest. If you have the chance to see any one of these incredible acts be sure to jump as they do not disappoint.
