Earlier this year, tinyghost surprised us with the epic ‘Sulfur,’ showcasing a new-found sound that pushed the musicality and fun behind future bass to a new level. Promising more to come in 2020, the talented creative has been relatively quiet throughout the year, but looks to stay true to that promise today with a fresh take on BABii’s ‘BEAST.’

The original, which is a soft, minimal ballad driven by BABii’s vocals and background instrumentals, has been completely revamped by tinyghost as he adds a futuristic flair to ‘BEAST.’ Surreal effects open the remix before percussion is quickly added to drive the energy along with the vocal layer. The rendition is also minimal at some parts, but the high-intensity portions are crisp and detailed, impressing listeners with its underlying danceability and groove. tinyghost’s version of BABii’s ‘BEAST’ is a further testament to the artist’s undeniable talents. Don’t miss it below.

As one of the first artists featured in our Focus Five segment way back in March of 2018, tinyghost has been on our radar for a while. Despite being among the most talented beat-makers in scene, the Austin-based producer is the embodiment of quality over quantity, having been silent for over twelve months now. The artist attributes this silence to various reasons, stating “I’ve been hopping around doing all sorts of things. Last year I worked a lot on music but reached dead-ends more often than not. Ended up in Europe for over a month visiting a bunch of cool boys n girls (shoutouts to Rohaan, Laxcity, RefraQ, BABii, Iglooghost, Tekvision, Grynpyret + more). I was also working a lot on the visual side of things (both for myself and for clients). I didn’t realise until the start of 2020 that nothing had made it’s way past a WIP stage for the past year (RIP). This year is different, and I plan on making up the ground that I lost last year with new music, new content, and a new look!”

Kicking things off in high gear, tinyghost returns today with a vibrant track titled ‘Sulfur’ that is sure to put his name back on the map. Listeners are encouraged to leave expectations at the door for this one, as tinyghost showcases a new side of his multi-faceted abilities, straying away from his usual trap sound to deliver something lighthearted and fun. “Until now I hadn’t really clicked with a sound that represented my own ideas and creative interests. With ‘Sulfur,’ it truly hit the mark and felt like the first ‘me’ track that I had made in a long time. I’m not saying that this exact style will represent me every time, but this track is a genuine response of where I see myself musically at the moment and that’s a comforting thing,” tinyghost states about where his vision currently stands. In a time where future bass is often dull and repetitive, the talented artist has created a unique piece that exudes emotion and beauty. Don’t miss ‘Sulfur’ below.

tinyghost has been looming around SoundCloud for the past year. Sneakily raking up plays while quietly dropping some of the most impressive tracks out. It’s easy to have not heard his music, but once you do, I assure you, you’ll instantly become a fan. It’s been six month since his last release, his greatest work to date ‘Jupiter,’ but he’s been especially quiet for good reason. For the past year he’s been working on his debut EP Association, which we have the honour of premiering today. “In a way this EP is an introduction to the things I make and the people I associate with (full pun intended). It’s a way for me to get my ideas out with like-minded creatives,” tinyghost tells us. “The intention was to collaborate with someone different for each track (hence the EP title). A lot of the EP came from meeting these peeps in real life. I toured with Copycatt when he was in the states a while back, and met up w/ Blake Skowron during that time. The collab with Laxicty and Khundi Panda came about through the sweet sweet internet so I threw it in the mix. Altogether the Association EP is just a collaborative effort with friends.” The result is nothing short of stellar. A three track offering that showcases why tinyghost very well may be the future of bass music.

Kicking things off is tinyghost’s collab with fellow rising star blake skowron. ‘Double’ begins dreamy and slowly drifts into focus. When the drums and bass hit at full force, it’s like an ancient war. Gold encrusted armor is smashed with war-hammers, spears and arrows soar in all directions. It’s mystical, majestic and abusive all at once. ‘Problem’ with Laxcity and Khundipanda is the definition of a slapper. Khundipanda’s intensity and in-your-face-energy is backed by a beat that’s guaranteed to set clubs on fire. The break midway through provides a near meditative energy that makes the second drop feel that much more heinous. Closing things out comes ‘Indent’ with Copycatt. Despite the title don’t expect any formality. This brooding bass beast sounds like the soundtrack for a genetically mutated monster that slinks through the sewers.

Clocking in at less than ten minutes total, this is sure to leave you thirsting for more. Thankfully this looks to be only the beginning, “This is sort of a small collection but more ‘Association’ stuff might be on the horizon…” His plans aren’t crystal clear yet, but you should definitely expect to see and hear a lot more from tinyghost moving forward, “I’m not entirely sure where I’m headed, the rest is sort of uncharted territory but you can expect it to be interesting. I don’t plan on sticking to any singular genre or theme with tinyghost so other stuff with very different styles and directions are bound to happen. In addition to music I’m a graphic designer/visual artist so that stuff can be expected as well (commissions welcome lol).”

Stream Association below and grab it here.

It’s the end of the month and that means it’s time for another installment of Focus Five. If you missed our first edition here’s the lowdown: each month Oggie & I (Colin) will be showcasing five of our favourite fresh finds. These are artists who recently landed on our radar and absolutely blew us away. This month we’ve got a touch of everything from a Canadian “lean bass” duo, to Australian and American bass producers and even a tinyghost. Check the list below and add a few new favourites to your regular listening list.

Charles Nimbus

Boston based producer Charles Nimbus is a beast on the low. Whether it’s pounding bass tunes or stunning laidback feels, Charles Nimbus posses the ability to conjure both, sometimes even within the same song. Take ‘visage’ for example. While it starts off sounding like it could be part of a relaxation mix, it quickly veers into a deep bass monster. Midway through it begins to drift toward tranquility once more before getting utterly abusive. It’s like doing yoga in the midst of a battlefield and somehow remaining unscathed. ‘light pillar’ drifts deep into the feels. It’s walking through a long trail where time ceases to exist, finally coming upon a small pond and looking down to truly see your reflection, for what feels like the first time. If that sounds a little to light for you tastes, you can always ‘hit the pipe’ and experience what it’s like to smoke PCP with a gang of samurai. Charles Nimbus’ music is a ride and I’m buying tickets any chance I get.

Chuurch

Since last month there’s been no one popping on my radar, nor popping off more impressively than “lean bass” duo Chuurch. Could we interest you in a remix of Zeds Dead x Illenium? A spot alongside the Deadbeats daddies at their Dead Rocks showcase? Or how about an all original EP on NEST? I think it’s appropriate to call these two Vulcan, as they’re most certainly working with fire, and a bass sound that can only be described as godly. While much of their previous output was in the 120-130 BPM range, they certainly seem to have found their groove with maddening midtempo. Deep and dirty, the lead single from Uunion is set to destroy dancefloors. Look out for them in a city near you, and praise be to the bass gods!

Hotwagner

When Oggie sent me Hotwagner’s ‘_thro’ my first reaction was, “oh what the fuck!?” From the cartoony meets trap intro, to the brain-bending first drop, I knew we had stumbled onto something special, and it only gets deeper from there. Pressing play on ‘_taukabou’ will provide a similar mind-rattling experience (switch cartoon inspiration for a laser shoot-out on this one). But like many others on this list, it’s not just slappers in his arsenal; Hotwagner can also ride the wave with the best of them, as seen on ‘_anywho’. If originality is something you respect and getting weird is something you revel in, Hotwagner is your new obsession.

SIlva

It shouldn’t be a surprise when we find out that an artist we’re really fucking with comes from Australia, because as far back as this blog goes we’ve been wowed by what’s coming from down under. Another such artist seemingly straight out of the Aussie intersection of future bass and trap is Silva. While his output remains minimal in his nearly two year presence, it hits one of our core values: quality over quantity. There’s a clear, unspeakable energy that each of his productions exudes. You’re almost always left wondering what you just listened to, but wanting more. ‘Escape’ and ‘intentions’ are awesome displays of explosive power while ‘Jungle’ and ‘vnforgettable’ offer a more restrained approach. Here’s to hoping we get more soon, because yeah, we’re greedy.

tinyghost

When I first stumbled onto tinyghost I felt like an astronaut uncovering a new planet. This feeling was aided by the fact that my introduction to the small apparition was the aptly titled ‘Jupiter.’ Part cinematic and worldly, part sci-fi adventure, the track is like instantly understanding an entire civilization based solely upon sound. It’s an enlightening and awakening exploit that weaves in just a touch of darkness to keep things riveting. ‘Blocked’ maintains a similar space-inspired energy but gets darker and dirtier. Rounding out tinyghost’s catalog are ‘Findme’ & ‘Dou,’ two elegant bangers that sample 50 Cent and Missy Elliot respectively. But these aren’t your standard bootlegs, these are complete re-imaginations with familiar undertones. The combination of familiar and fresh is nothing short of magic. It’s been six months since we’ve heard new music from tinyghost, but next week the silence will be demolished with a fresh EP that’s set to feature blake skowron, Laxcity, COPYCATT, and Khundi Panda – 쿤디판다. tinyghost is about to set the spring on fire.
