“It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this.” says the old man in the cave, handing the player a sword to aid in the hours of exploration that they can expect to follow from one of the most legendary franchises of all time, The Legend of Zelda. DMVU and Toadface pay homage to the phrase with their new EP, lovingly titled It’s Dangerous to Go Alone, released via Dome of Doom. Much in the same way that the Zelda franchise tantalizes players with exploration, discovery, and treasure, this EP truly evokes a feeling of not knowing what’s around the next corner. The next dungeon is an unknown realm, the presence of either treasure or danger being equally likely. Likewise, every track is unique. Every sample is distinct. Every little bit of sound design is a treasure unto itself, just waiting to be heard.

DMVU and Toadface can both claim “experimental sound design” as a forte on their résumé. It’s Dangerous to Go Alone is like a charcuterie board of instruments and samples, ranging from deep sub-bass thuds to treble-centric MIDI notes from video game soundtracks. At no time does the cacophony sound dissonant. Each sound is pinpointed, artfully placed in a complicated juxtaposition that makes every note shine through like it’s surfing a wave toward a beach full of unsuspecting listeners.

From the police siren in the intro to ‘Uncut Diamonds’ to the Deep, Dark, and Dangerous-like sub-bass of ‘Fabled,’ It’s Dangerous to Go Alone manages to make the listener feel like they’re in a constant state of danger. Lives may not be lost here, but your wits are a different story. The skull-wracking instrumentation in ‘Jungle Dub’ and ‘Morning Star” hits like waking up on the wrong side of the bed in the morning before being comforted with the first cup of coffee for the day. Not a beat is wasted, not a frequency left unturned. If speakers could talk, they’d be left aghast at the range they’re expected to put out for this EP. The arpeggiated synths of ‘Uncut Diamonds’ and ‘Jungle Dub’ aren’t all that far off from the Super Nintendo-era reward sounds of opening a treasure chest. RPG-lovers will find themselves in the familiar state of wondering, “What’s that? Oh, it’s treasure!” every time the measure switches up.

DMVU and Toadface command the utmost respect for their ability to do something different but consistent with their music time and time again. It’s Dangerous to Go Alone is by no means a deviation from what listeners have come to expect from either artist, but all the same, it will hit the ears like something listeners have never heard before. This is treasure chest gold. This is no game, this is art. Do yourself a favor now and listen to It’s Dangerous to Alone below.

Fitting firmly into a genre box has never been something that Marietta, Georgia-based Todd Holler, also known by his Toadface production alias, has attempted to pull off. Fiercely paving his own sonic pathway with nothing but the utmost unique of beats, he’s garnered a ravenously loyal and dedicated following during his youthful career through the use of his wide range of swampy, gritty, girthy, and simultaneously beautiful pieces. His classic-cut ‘Seratonin Machinegun‘ has been a therapeutic tool for years, affording times of tranquil bliss and calm reflection during moments of extreme turmoil, and his collaboration ‘Ghetto Karma‘ with his brother Yheti could easily be mistaken for being a part of an old school videogame soundtrack. Last year, we saw the release of his bass-heavy Gangrene EP, which received major applause from a broad swathe of the experimental side of the scene, boasting a souped-up version of his already massively impressive sound. Now, he’s gifting us another body of work with Tides, and we’ve had the great privilege of premiering ‘The Grand Canaries’ from it for your listening pleasure right here on FUXWITHIT.

Inspired by ‘The Outlaw Ocean‘ book by Ian Urbina, Toadface aims to gift good music for an even better cause through the release of Tides, with ‘The Grand Canaries’ setting a mood of dramatic beauty and intense drama. Opening with moody, reality-bending gunshots and water droplets, an immediate air of wonder and intrigue fills the surrounding area. Intensely gorgeous strings swiftly follow, setting the coals of the heart ablaze while igniting the nervous system in preparation for the journey you’re about to undertake. Feeling like a cinematic masterpiece in and of itself, this piece feels more like a full-blown listening experience, the traditional term “song” not nearly seeming fitting enough. One of Toadface’s most impactful pieces to date, ‘The Grand Canaries’ deserves undivided attention while rinsing, as each minute element and introduction and subtraction of layers create a masterful ebb and flow that weaves a tale of dangerous adventure. Untold depth of sound combines with a heartfelt journalistic endeavor to create an end product that’s as astounding as it is magisterial. Toadface has truly outdone himself with this track and with the rest of Tides as a whole. Check out ‘The Grand Canaries’ for yourself below!

Wholeheartedly putting “experimental” in “experimental bass music,” Todd Holler, also known by his Toadface alias, has consistently been one of the most forward-thinking minds in the entire music community. Outstretching a welcoming hand to listeners, he protectively guides them to the outer reaches of their own consciousness, expansion, and self-realization at the forefront of his process. With jaw-dropping performances at EDC Las Vegas, Okeechobee, Wakaan, and more, he’s dazzled scores of rabid bass aficionados, much to their sheer delight. Now, he’s right back into the thick of things with the release of his latest project Gangrene, filled to the brim with 7 sensational, forward-thinking pieces.

Some bodies of work open gently, gracefully leading the listener into the overall soundscape of the collection. ‘Discover,’ however, feels more like the lift-off of a jet engine into space. A reality-bending melody greets you as it accelerates into the build before you’re hit with the vocal sample “Houston, we have a problem.” And boy, what a problem this track is. Coating your body thicker than Nickelodeon’s slime, every pour in your body will be stuffed to the brim with goosebumps from this bassy nonsense. A truly extraterrestrial experience, your consciousness is the last thing you need to worry about being abducted from this haunting piece.

Melding a sensational hip-hop beat with the production quality of top-tier bass music, ‘Half Ounce’ will have you gangster walking in a full-on alien suit. If you’re mentally envisioning E.T. with a gold chain and a full pimp suit, you’re on the right track. Contorting disarray into organized chaos is a feat of legend, but something Toadface conquers with ease and poise. Serving up so much groove you might break a hip in the process, ‘Half Ounce’ feels more like a full bag if anything.

One of the heaviest tracks by a longshot on Gangrene, ‘Big Mane’ is so large Paul Bunyan would be lowkey jealous of its stature. Serving-up squeaky clean wubs that quickly descend into borderline excessive undulations, this is one track that’s not to be trifled with. The sensational groove combined with the stupefying grime creates an equally ear-pleasing and heavy final product.

Defying all laws of physics, the title track, ‘Gangrene,’ unravels the time-space continuum with malicious intent, circumventing all previous earthly limitations. Sporting a hefty crunchiness that perfectly embodies all things irate, this is one track that would be an absolute crowd decimator.

‘Awkward Encounter,’ coming in the 5th spot on Gangrene, feels more like a delightful encounter than anything. A grimy, light-hearted romp through the guttural swamps of sound design, this one feels like a lovely combination of grit and joy blended expertly together. The horns and strings are huge stand-outs in this piece and add interesting accentuations that keep the listeners’ ears on their toes.

Just as an estuary in normal language is the tidal mouth of a river, ‘Estuary’ in this sense is akin to the last round of shenanigans shared prior to the very final moments shared with an old friend before a long departure. An energetic mental guide if you’ve ever heard one, adventure and exploration are at the forefront of the occasion, with never a dull moment in sight. Funky, fresh, and all-around fantastic, this is some pure musical fun.

Ending Gangrene in the most beautiful way possible, ‘Wholesome,’ puts on a masterclass with enough energy to be gripping, but not enough to be imposing, the mind is left free to wander while the spirit is still firmly locked to the Earth. A lush piano and horn melody shines the brightest out of arguably the most minimalist piece on the EP, eliciting concrete, deep emotions. A contemplative and thoroughly introspective piece, a sense of gratitude for life itself is a common experience.

Toadface truly has outdone himself with Gangrene. A deep-dive into the brilliant, eccentric mind of Todd Holler, and an exquisite representation of the growth and musical prowess he’s attained in his artistic career so far, this 7-track story told through sound is captivating from start to finish, and should be considered a top priority to listen to bass music fans if you haven’t already. Check it out in full for yourself below!

Dropped down straight from a flying saucer into the throng of central Jersey, Shanghai Doom have been a duo bent on monumental destruction via sub bass. Roaming the exciting, yet murky, tides of experimental bass with their latest releases, they’ve found a home in the wilderness of weirdness that is the Wakaan label. In October they’ll have the distinct opportunity to perform at the inaugural Wakaan Fest in Arkansas, spearheaded by the head alien honcho himself Liquid Stranger. Back in January we had the pleasure of sitting down with the duo for an interview about their inspirations and origins, and they graced us with a guest mix packed to the brim with unreleased material. For now, their latest present to fans’ ears is the Biohazard EP, a 4 track collaborative EP so treacherous you’ll need lead earphones in order to survive prolonged exposure.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/668546525″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

The opening track in this radioactive body of work is ‘Agent Orange,’ a collaboration with east coast boys Tsimba and Deez. The track lures you in with its impeccably EQ’d vocals looped to get you fully entranced in the infectious rhythm, sprinkling more and more reckless bass lines that build upon each other. Equal parts gangster and improvised explosive device, this piece will make you feel like a kingpin in the trap and also blast you with a full frontal assault. Arguably my favorite track on the EP, this is one I’ll keep in my daily rotation for weeks if not months to come.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/668003903″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

Next on the roster is ‘Alchemy’, Big City’s collab with the purveyors of noxious materials. The pre-drop vocals state in a low tone “that is extraordinary,” which is spot on considering the first few notes simulate sound waves barking at you. The rest of the song is so alien even ET wouldn’t know what to do with it. Resulting in immediate quarantine, the 2nd drop is most assuredly a prime cause for a case of the aggressive wiggles.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/666839927″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

Space Wizard jumps in the ring for the next collab ‘Teleblock’, the embodiment of joyful confusion. Featuring swift switch-ups, exceptional layering, and a wonky melody, this song is a grade A contender for a wook anthem.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/668546564″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

Rounding out the EP is ‘Dangerous Impulses,’ a wild collaboration with the youthful wub dealer Toadface. Cleverly incorporating a phone dialing sample throughout, this could be a voicemail to Marvin the Martian. From an audiophile standpoint this song is exceedingly impressive, masterfully creating cohesion and veritable oodles of flow amongst many different samples.

Despite all these tracks being collaborations with different artists, consistent themes are present throughout each piece. Immaculate attention to detail, pupil-dilating sound design, and an innate push to be as unique and fun as possible. Make sure to check out the Biohazard EP in its entire glory for yourself below!

The Trifinity supergroup is a collaboration project between Yehti, Toadface & Mt. Analogue. They make weird fucking music, and I mean that in the best way possible.

Over the years, their live sets have become a legendary fixture in the bass music community due to their incredible ability to ride that razor thin margin between chaos, theatrics, and pure musical genius into an incredibly strange and introspective trip that stays with you long after the show is over.

Needless to say, the boys have developed what some would call a cult following, and this latest bass heavy offering is certainly going to deepen that rapidly expanding base. This over the top tune begins like a classic riddim-style banger, but nothing is ever that simple with these boys as the tune quickly evolves into a crazier, heavier, weirder, more dynamic version of itself.

So if you like bass music, don’t hesitate. Go grab ‘Dark Triangle’ today. Join us.

Following his massive Bugs for Breakfast LP that drew inspiration from all corners of the electronic music spectrum, Toadface has been busy in the studio, creating fresh grimy concoctions to please the ears of all who love his mystical bass signature. Today, the eccentric producer blesses us with his latest experiment, coming in the form of a fitting remix for Psymbionic’s ‘Hypnotoad’. Originally released last month, Toadface has wasted no time offering his take on the wonky track. Guttural clicks and a high-energy soundscape kick off the remix, before the talented producer gradually builds the atmosphere into an insurmountable rise in tension that perfectly fits his amphibious persona. Gravelly synths and wobbly basses shine in the drop, where chaotic sounds come together to form a cohesively entertaining piece. Throwing absurd noises left, right and center, Toadface is somehow able to mesh them together into a wildly hypnotizing flip bound to please bass fans everywhere. Don’t miss his ‘Hypnotoad’ remix below.

Becoming known for his experimental flair and swampy textures, Toadface recently unveiled his most mammoth body of work yet in the form of the Bugs For Breakfast LP – a unique twelve-track masterpiece with a handful of hefty collaborations. Delving into the album with mystical elegance, Toadface takes us through a world of ambiance molded with glitch-filled chops that draw inspiration from all corners of the electronic music spectrum, giving nods to the dubstep, trap and free-form realms. Ambient hazes continue to soar across the LP as we’re guided through a marshy landscape of intricate undertones amongst a warped soundscape.

In relation, the LP released in anticipation of the massive Bugs For Breakfast tour which is set to kick off on October 6th, and we had the opportunity to catch up with Toadface prior to him hitting the road. Check out the interview below!

Tell us a little about the origins of Toadface and what got you into production. Who were your biggest inspirations?
I got the name partially from my Dad, my name is Todd and he would always call me the Toad. I started out trying to make heavy dubstep so I gave myself the name Toadface Destroyer but I thought the Destroyer part wasn’t me so I dropped that part of the name. My older brother Yheti taught me how to make beats on Fl Studios around 2010. I was really into dubstep around that time like Excision and Doctor P and then my taste just got progressively weirder from there.

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?
I would probably call it psychedelic dubstep or left-field bass.

In the last couple of years, your music has found a home at Wakaan. How did you link up with the label in the first place?
I first met Space Jesus a couple of times and then we played a festival together called Infrasound where I played right after him. He stayed and caught my set and actually came up and rapped a little bit over my beats. After that we hung out and he asked me to submit something to Wakaan.

I spend about 30 hours on a single track and sometimes more. I just keep experimenting until I like the story it portrays.

Congrats on the Bugs For Breakfast tour and LP! You mentioned on Twitter that the project has been two years in the making. When you started the first couple of tracks, was a 12-track LP on your mind? If not, when did the album idea come about?
Thank you and I had no idea I was making a 12 track LP. I just had a bunch of finished tracks. Originally it was just going to be a EP but then I wanted to get some big collabs on there to help push the release more, so that’s when we added the tracks with Yheti, Dmvu, Of The Tree’s, and Sfam.

Bugs For Breakfast is filled with quirky sounds and eccentric synths (in the best way possible). How do you make so many seemingly disjointed noises sound so cohesive?
Just a lot of practice and spending a lot of time on each individual track. I spend about 30 hours on a single track and sometimes more. I just keep experimenting until I like the story it portrays.

How does a dog barking inspire you to create an entire track like ‘Courage’ around that concept?
I love sampling old cartoons and things that feel nostalgic to my youth. The beginning sample “We Interrupt this program” was already in there from the theme song of Courage the Cowardly Dog so I tried adding the last part and it ended up working really well!

I would be down to collab with anyone from WAKAAN, everyone makes such great music on there.

You’ve done your fair share of collabs and Bugs For Breakfast is the perfect balance of solo and group work. Excluding anyone you’ve worked with in the past, who are your dream collaborators?
Some of my biggest inspirations for years have been G Jones, Bleep Bloop, and Tsuruda so a collab with one of them would be a dream come true. I am open to collaborating with a lot of people though. I would be down to collab with anyone from WAKAAN, everyone makes such great music on there.

22 tour dates across the country, that’s huge. What are you most excited about for the upcoming tour? Are you dreading anything?
I am excited for every single date on the tour but the one show I am probably most excited for is Halloween in Chicago with Coki. I have been listening to Coki’s tunes since I first started listening to electronic music so it’s going to be a bucket list goal for sure.

Last question, pineapple on pizza. Yay or nay?
Yes I actually used to cook pizzas with bananas, pineapples, and green peppers and its really good. Cooking the bananas makes them a little less sweet and the combination is great. You should try it sometime.

Don’t miss the Bugs For Breakfast LP below!
