Finnish bass maestro Topi has been a consistent force in the bass scene for years now, having released on prominent labels such as Never Say Die and Monstercat and earning praise from the best in the game time and time again. And, with very few collaborations under his belt, Topi’s earlier work with the legendary Space Laces is additional proof that his production mastery is among the elite, and quite frankly, deserves more recognition.

Following a string of impressive self-releases over the last couple of years spanning a multitude of genres under the bass umbrella as well as singles on Gud Vibrations, Topi looks to catapult himself to the forefront of the scene with his upcoming project on Never Say Die titled the Systematic Schemer EP. Out in full on May 11th, the collection of tracks sees Topi up the ante with his production, unleashing mind-melting sound design and an oddly bouncy appeal rarely found in modern bass music.

Today, we have the extreme pleasure of premiering ‘Systematic,’ a high-octane heater that is relentless in its approach. The introduction creates an unnerving sense of agitation and anticipation within listeners, before Topi builds to a crescendo of monstrous, core-rattling dubstep insanity. Quick to the punch yet never interrupting the flow between sections, ‘Systematic’ is just a the name suggests: cold, calculated and mechanical. Topi’s robotic signature is present throughout, but the artist is able to transition between different levels of energy seamlessly, allowing listeners to ease into the brutish drops while keeping everyone hooked with a curious bridge and straying from a generic cookie-cutter formula.

The best part? There’s more where that came from. Don’t miss ‘Systematic’ below and catch the Systematic Schemer EP out on Tuesday.

Despite being no stranger to genres, dubstep seems to run in the Finnish producer’s blood as he returns to the heaviness with his latest. Quintessential Topi comes to light upon pressing play as his frantic synths and signature sound are immediately heard in the fast-paced introduction. When the drop hits, all hell breaks loose as the 145 BPM fury of metallic basses shatter you to your core, hitting harder with every new bar. ‘Verdict’ is relentless with its approach and further demonstrates Topi’s innate production prowess.

The power of the Internet often allows people with no direct exposure to art to create as if they were directly influenced. One would not immediately think of Finland as a hub for bass music, yet Topi is among the best and most underrated artists who falls under this umbrella, with his ingenious versatility and impeccable sound design earning the praise of industry greats. Hot off the menacing ‘Self Sabotage,’ we figured it was due time to connect with the bass music virtuoso to discuss life in Finland, future plans and much more.

In addition, since Topi shows are quite rare for most, the talented producer has graced us with an action-packed thirty-minute mix that showcases his diverse tastes and a few unreleased treats. Check out the interview and mix below!

Tell us about the origins of Topi. Do you have any formal musical training or was production your first introduction to creating music?

I do not have any formal training. I pretty much just got interested in the production side of things from listening to lots of different music.

Finland certainly isn’t the first spot that comes to mind as a bass music hub. What first piqued your curiosity into this genre and what led you to producing?

Definitely not. When I started producing I kind of went with house/tech stuff first, then later once I got bored of it, I started to mess around more with heavier music. Always been a big fan of acts like Noisia, Feed Me and Skrillex. So I just thought, why not give this type of stuff a try.

How is the bass music scene in Finland?

Quite small. I personally only know a couple producers here who work with heavier electronic music. Not many shows either. Risky for promoters to plan any shows in here due to the lack of people who would be interested in the more bass heavy events.

I’ve always enjoyed the production side of things more than the performing.

What has been the most challenging aspect of being a bass music producer in a place where the scene isn’t very active compared to North America?

I think the biggest thing is the number of opportunities to play shows. In addition to that, it takes a lot of effort to break into markets like the US which already has a lot of talent of its own.

Does this ever make you feel like you chose the right career but in the wrong place? Do you ever get urges to make the move or are you comfortable with where you are now?

Well, I’ve always enjoyed the production side of things more than the performing. So not really that interested in moving to a different country just because I might get more gigs there.

Along those lines, what do you do outside of music and production? What’s a typical day in the life of Topi?

Other than music, I work with Photoshop/Premiere/AE a lot, doing artwork, videos, teasers etc. Still, my typical days are usually just me working on music. I also like video games. Currently mostly playing CS:GO and Tarkov.

Last year, you went on a string of impressive independent releases. What prompted the decision to stay away from labels and do your own thing?

Well, most of the labels I’ve worked with before weren’t interested in signing them. Regardless, I personally really liked the tunes and they’ve sat on my computer for a while and the quickest way to release them was by self-release, so the decision was pretty straightforward at that point.

Is something similar planned for 2020? How do you hope to top your singles this year?

Not exactly. One self-release (which was ‘Self Sabotage’) and a couple of releases planned with a label I haven’t worked with before! So that’s nice.

You never seem to confine yourself to genres. Any new projects into unfamiliar territory in the works?

Not in the works currently. Well, I haven’t worked with a vocalist or a rapper before so might give that a try this year.

What were your intentions in creating this mix? Is it similar to what one could expect from a Topi set?

Yeah, I guess it’s pretty similar. Although, this one starts a bit slower than my other mixes and has even more BPM changes. I usually like to keep my live sets moving and filled with all types of genres.

Any fan of Topi knows that genres have never been a confine for the talented producer. Coming off a string of self-released singles ranging from dubstep to electro in 2019, the Finnish creative looks to continue to add to his repertoire of versatility with a drum and bass-leaning beast titled ‘Self Sabotage’ with his first release of the calendar year.

High-energy, profoundly-mastered, industrial-driven sound design and eerie atmospheres are the very makings of a Topi song, and ‘Self Sabotage’ builds on just that. One immediately recognizes the signature sounds from the Finnish mastermind upon pressing play, yet their unique arrangement keeps listeners attentive and curious. The first drop is a devilish offering of metallic synths and crisp sounds that attest to Topi’s incredible abilities. An exquisite bridge leads ‘Self Sabotage’ into a second half that is lower in energy than the first, yet the beat and rhythm are equally as captivating, making the track extremely well-rounded.

Don’t miss ‘Self Sabotage’ below and stay tuned for more Topi very soon.

A gift that keeps on giving, the Finnish bass mastermind is continuing his hot streak of self-released works, building upon the momentum of ‘Killswitch‘ and ‘Digitize‘ to keep bass fans satisfied with his latest sinister concoction titled ‘Master Plan.’

Although highly regarded in the realm of sound design as he should be, Topi has also elevated his introduction game in his last few releases, and ‘Master Plan’ is no exception. Slowly building around a looming and foreboding soundscape, the gradual build in tension peaks your curiosity from the get-go. As the drop hits, Topi’s signature metallic synths and rugged bass signature shines while his flawless use of percussion drives the track forward. In a true mad scientist manner, Topi’s ‘Master Plan’ is sure to take over soon enough. Don’t miss it below.

Monthly releases are flowing in from the Finnish production master that is Topi. From a bass house flip of ‘Turn Off The Lights‘ to the aggressive ‘Killswitch,’ Topi has persistently shown his unmatched versatility within the world of bass music. Keeping the theme of self-released heaters alive, the talented artist returns today with a house-leaning heater titled ‘Digitize’ that is simultaneously groovy and gritty.

Although named ‘Digitize,’ there is nothing binary about Topi’s latest as he continues to blur the lines between all realms of bass. Steadily showcasing his desire to experiment and explore, Topi lets his imagination run free with his newest take on house. Playing out like a symphony of gnarly mechanical components rotating, switching and clipping through a conveyor line in a factory that has suddenly come to life, ‘Digitize’ adds harmony to the arithmetical process of converting data into digital form. With quintessential Topi percussion and synths as well as further ingenuity to the musical arrangement, ‘Digitize’ is a must-listen. Don’t miss it below!

Topi is undoubtedly one of bass music’s most underrated innovators. Swaying between genres with a finesse that is unmatched, the Finnish producer is sure to become a festival mainstay once promoters catch wind of his dynamic, frenzy-inducing energy. Known for ground-shattering releases on labels such as Never Say Die, Monstercat and Good Enuff, as well as collaborations with heavy-hitters such as Space Laces and Tisoki, Topi is now back in full force, this time taking on Dog Blood‘s newest single, ‘Turn Off The Lights.’

If the original track from Skrillex and Boyz Noise was the industrial, rave-ready track transcending the past few decades of bass music, Topi’s flip is a look into the future of the ever-growing envelope of a genre. While managing to keep the experimental essence of ‘Turn Off The Lights’ alive, Topi twists it into a house-leaning banger that will have you mesmerized by its wicked sound design and raw energy. With bass house quickly becoming saturated with more of the same, it’s artists such as Topi who keep the spark of the genre alive with offerings such as his latest. Don’t miss his remix of ‘Turn Off The Lights’ below!

If bass music is getting saturated with too much of the same for your liking, Topi needs to be on your radar. While the Finnish producer hasn’t been around for too long, the quality and diversity of his releases are unmatched. This talent has gotten the attention of bass music’s biggest labels, too, with the likes of Never Say Die, Monstercat, and Shred Collective frequently releasing Topi’s music. His unique take on bass puts his tracks in a variety of ranges such as bass house, dubstep, and drum & bass, sometimes all together in the same song.

Topi’s skills are on full display with his latest release titled ‘Not This Spot,’ out now on Good Enuff. His distinct metallic synths and crunchy bass is more rampant than ever in his newest track, with classic D&B drums also shining in the background. Breaking barriers between genres as he always does, Topi continues to impress in ‘Not This Spot’. Although the producer isn’t headlining any festivals yet, we’re convinced he will blow up soon, so don’t miss his latest below!
