If you have partied in Toronto in the last 10 years, chances are you have had the luck to attend a Last Planet event. Started in 2012, Last Planet has been creating dance floor experiences with a focus on sound system based music and a DIY ethos.

FUXWITHIT caught up with Last Planet promoter Drew Hale to get under the hood of this phenomenal series of underground dance parties, DOCD a.k.a. Department of Civilian Dance. Drew, in collaboration with Kizmet32 and Night Shift, are kicking it up a notch for No. 006 in the series. Their next event features an all-female line-up this Friday (June 17th). Read on to get some insight into the scene.

What kind of music is Last Planet about, and who are some artists that have played past shows?

We glide across many genres including Jungle, UKG, Grime, 140, DnB, Dubstep, and House/Techno. The list of guests over the years has been a representation of some of the champions of the underground, old and new. Including: Alix Perez, Doc Scott, Youngsta, Conducta, Madam X, Khiva, J Kenzo, Sam Binga, Nikki Nair, Mythm, Anna Morgan, Flowdan, Librarian, Randall, and many, many more. Primarily, though, we focus on highlighting the local talent pool we have here in Toronto.

Why did you start DOCD?

Our primary focus has been showcasing the talent we have here in Toronto, both musically and artistically. We did it for mental health as well. The most rewarding part is the reaction from people that have been needing music in their lives again and we are able to provide that experience for them.

Multi-genre is always the format for DOCD and this one may have the most flavours yet.

You always curate an insane lineup; what is special about DOCD 006?

The lineup is all female on this one and we could not be happier with it. Toronto has some of the baddest women on this planet and the crowd will get to experience this on June 17th.

Full range of underground sonics. We have our dear friend Madam X coming and she will put the 40hz system to work. Bambii will be headlining the second room on Erebus System alongside Hangaelle and Minzi Roberta from Kuruzaa. Sofia Fly and Vaughan.

Multi-genre is always the format for DOCD and this one may have the most flavours yet.

What can you tell me about the ‘secret venue’ for 006?

We never announce the location until day of show and definitely feel like that adds to the excitement of each show. You never know where the night will lead you, just have to keep an open mind and wait for the email.

What are you most excited about?

The thing I get most excited about is being able to employ so many talented people. The team behind the scenes works so hard to make these events happen and the planning is months long.

Getting to watch the show come to life and the ideas we have become reality is the most satisfying part for me, personally.

There is a narrative playing out behind the scenes that not everyone has caught onto yet, but that each event reveals a little bit more. Excited to show Toronto what we have been working on.

What can people expect?

People can expect to be transported into the world of DOCD, which is driven by the unity of Music & Art. Big sound systems. Multi-room experience. Art installations. And good people. We put a lot of effort into each production and none are the same.

There is a narrative playing out behind the scenes that not everyone has caught onto yet, but each event reveals a little bit more. Excited to show Toronto what we have been working on.

How do you get tickets?

You have to get on our mailing list to get tickets and wait for the email.

Check out the DOCD 005 aftermovie (produced by yours truly), and keep up with this group of beautiful freaks via the links below.

On Thursday night three of New York’s finest came through to bless us in Toronto. Velvet Underground played host to Brasstracks’ For Those Who Know Tour with support from their homie S’natra. Although they didn’t sell out like they have several other cities, the venue was packed with just enough room to breathe and dance around you.

S’natra kicked the show off with ‘Power’ and kept us hooked with his most recent release ‘Off Key.’ When he delivered the bars, “When po po come up on me, nigga I stay silent” they cut the lights off, leaving the venue in the dark for a quick second, before jumping back into the verse. It was a simple effort but displayed S’natra’s creativity as a performer. His set was divided into two sections: what he considered tracks where he was “just talking to us” and the turn up. This showcased his versatility as an artist, demonstrating his comfort level telling stories and dropping clever bars and just getting the party going. The later section included him debuting his new single ‘Wassup’ with Alexander Lewis and MadeinTYO, which turned the energy to the max. His pacing was perfect, pulling fans in to listen early then bringing the energy up gradually with each song. He had fans ‘Feelin Good’ with his finale, bouncing over the bed squeaks effortlessly and amping the crowd to turn up in the breaks. Support slots generally are a chance for up-and-comers to hone their skills and learn the ropes of performing but S’natra showcased a stage presence that suggested a star in the making.

When the Brasstracks neon sign was ignited, fans knew it was time for the main event. Ivan and Conor casually walked on stage and soaked the venue in before taking their places. Conor behind the drums and Ivan surrounded by his keyboard, Abelton controller and trumpet. They kicked things off slow before building into a triumphant sound and intensity that carried throughout. ‘Dreaming at The Function’ was hypnotic while ‘Fever’ prompted a jazzy dance party. Ivan’s energy was insane, he bounced around the stage like a kid who ate too much cake at a birthday party, with an endless smile to match. Conor killed it on the drums with precise focus. The entire set was mesmerizing, at times you’d be singing or humming along, other moments dancing uncontrollably and often times just standing there, mouth open in awe. It wasn’t just that each track was amazing but how they went about flowing from one to the next. They brought out S’natra once again for ‘Opposite Ways’ and freaked and looped his closing vocals into a wild improvised breakdown. For other transitions Ivan would DJ on the Ableton controller or Conor would keep the beat going on the drums and flow into the next track.

While they played a ton of their original work they also rocked the party with familiar tracks and covers. Their biggest production to date, ‘No Problem’ prompted a massive sing along, as did their covers of Destiny Child, Ja Rule, Kanye West and Lil Uzi Vert. They also treated fans to some unreleased heaters including a wild new collab with Denzel Curry. When it finally came time for the show to end Brasstracks left the stage to an avalanche of applause that quickly turned into chants for an encore. They didn’t keep fans waiting too long before coming to give us a finale that included their massive remix of ‘Higher Ground’ and a more mellowed conclusion. When the night was over, my hands hurt from clapping and my voice was half gone from screaming, if that doesn’t tell you the level of performance Brasstracks brought forth, I’m not sure what will. If this tour comes to your GO. Whether you’re a fan of rap, R&B, jazz, electronic music or all of them, you’ll leave amazed.

For a bigger taste of what to expect, check out the live video of ‘Opposite Ways’ below.

Trybe is kicking off a new event series – one with an innovative take on music performances, and the way in which we experience them. The first event will feature local talent Hydee, Jonah K, Devecseri, Outtatime & MSNGR, with a 40Hz Soundsystem setup that’s likely to shake the floors all night.

On top of their DJ/live performances, there’s going to be auxiliary speakers to simulate a surround sound experience, projection mapping by one of the city’s best visual artists, and analog audio-reactive LED setpieces for a next-gen feel.

The first event will be held at The Smiling Buddha on Saturday, Feb 3rd – You can RSVP on Facebook, and buy advance tickets here (they’re more at the door).

This is sure to make a huge impact within the local scene, so if you’re in the area, don’t miss out on this one!

Joshua Steele, best known as Flux Pavilion, made a pit stop in Toronto on May 4th as part of his Around the World in 80 Raves grand tour – accompanied by Kayzo, Moksi, and a special guest who helped turn up the hype and revel with us, on that rainy Thursday evening.

I hadn’t been to UNIUN Nightclub in some while, and forgot how unbelievably hot the room could get, to the point that I could feel the heat emanating from people standing a foot away from me. Regardless of the sweltering heat, endless sweat, and inability to move, every single face in the crowd was lit up with a smile from start to finish, thanks to a night dedicated to going all in and getting lost to the bass and colourful caucophony happening all around.

Moksi

I arrived at UNIUN to the Netherlands’ duo Moksi on stage; they delivered some solid future house to an already-packed room, to warm everybody up. With that night being their Canadian debut, they put so much energy into their entire set – especially when they got the room bouncing with their remix of Oliver Heldens‘ ‘I Don’t Wanna Go Home‘. As their set progressed, things started taking a turn, following their joint track with Yellow Claw, ‘Open‘; the duo started turning over to some higher-energy, harder-hitting tracks to prepare us for the madness around the corner.

Once Moksi wrapped up, we were all expecting Kayzo to hop on stage, yet the Dark Queen herself, REZZ, showed up instead. As we cheered in half-ecstasy, half-confusion, Kayzo shortly made his REAL appearance, and unleashed a set which caused the crowd to simultaneously headbang and show off their fancy footwork. Meanwhile, he’s going off behind the decks just as much as we were in the crowd. REZZ made a re-appearance about halfway through his set; Kayzo gave her a warm welcome, right before he spewed out her track ‘Purple Gusher‘ – which we all lost our minds to.

Kayzo

As all of this was happening, there was a steady mosh pit that gradually increased in size as the night went on. One of the only pockets of the room where the heatwave partially diffused, you’d have to be willing to get caught in the storm to feel a “fresh” breeze. On the other hand, going outside for some air was a refreshing cool down, thanks to the continuous rain throughout the night. A good number of us were literally steaming as the rain evaporated from our skin.

At around 1am, the crowd felt like it had reached an all-time heat record – we were all drenched in sweat, trying to catch our breath from the insurmountable energy expended during Kayzo’s set. Flux walked onto the stage, and started off with a double-loaded cannon – opening with ‘Cannonball,’ his collab with Snails, before transitioning into his classic tune, ‘Bass Cannon.’

There was one question I couldn’t stop asking myself all night, upon entering the club – when and if he was going to play that one particular song. Sure enough, not even half an hour into his set, he played it – once the crowd heard ‘I Can’t Stop‘, everybody magically caught a second wind. People put their hands so high up in the air; headbangers were swinging and lurching their bodies at full force; the moshers quickly filled the circle and let loose, while tossing their fallen brethren back onto their feet, wasting no time nor energy.

The man, Flux Pavilion

Near the end, before he called it for the night, he grabbed the mic, and asked a simple request. “Before I got to bed and get a good sleep, is it cool if I play one more track?”

We cheered with whatever voices we had left, and to end off the night, he played his remix of DJ Fresh’s ‘Gold Dust’. Those near the active mosh zone started nudging people back, to create the biggest circle of the night. Once the drop hit and all hell broke loose, the fog machines came on full blast. Amidst the haze, I couldn’t help but smile, both to how amazing the night was overall, in conjunction with the added element of surprise, not knowing when/where the next basshead was going to charge at me from.

Flux and the gang continue on their journey, and are currently about halfway through the US segment of the tour, which concludes at Stereo Live in Dallas on June 10th. Who knows where the rest of the world tour will see Flux afterwards – wherever he goes though, there’s bound to be a path of bass-fueled mayhem left in his wake.

On Saturday night The Hoxton hosted its final party. After 6 years of pushing the nightlife and music scene forward, the iconic venue closed its doors for the final time. For those unfamiliar, The Hoxton has been the hub for forward-thinking electronic music in Toronto. They acted as the home base for some of the greatest shows the city has ever seen. Whether it was bringing new acts to the city for the first time or helping to provide Toronto talent with a space to flourish. The venue helped break a sea of talented locals ranging from Hunter Siegel and Rezz to Keys N Krates, Thugli, Pusher + so many more. And who can forget their legendary after parties? With everyone from Drake and Kanye, to Diplo & Skrillex turning up in the intimate space. The impact that the venue had on the city is remarkable and although it’s gone it definitely will never be forgotten.

In order to properly say goodbye you know they had to throw one last rager to go down in history. It was only fitting that Hunter Siegel’s No Neon took over the club one last time. The event series has been a staple in the city for the past two years with Hunter bringing through some of the best new talent and throwing down legendary impromptu B2Bs. With Hunter scheduled for an open to close set and special guests practically a given, the club was packed from the time it opened. I arrived before 10:30 and the line-up was already massive. There was a bittersweet energy in the air; a mixture of excitement and sadness. There was a huge buzz outside with everyone talking about who might show up for a quick guest set and discussing their disbelief that this was truly the last night out at The Hoxton. Every person you talked to shared the same sentiment, “I can’t believe this is it”.I got in just before 11 and it was already filling in nicely. Fast forward 30 minutes and it was packed with Hunter Siegel throwing down heavy. If it were any other night, you would of thought that it was easily 1:00 am. Considering the size and intensity of the crowd, he didn’t need to hold back, saving things for later, he just let it flow. This was underscored by him joking on the mic about wanting to save ‘Bad and Boujee’ for later and then dropping it before midnight. Although the special guests were a highlight to many, it needs to be mentioned that Hunter deserves an incredible amount of respect. Not many DJs can murder a party for 6+ hours and he did just that. Now on to the special guests. Going to the event everyone knew the finale was destined to see another iconic B2B session featuring some of Canada’s finest. Things kicked off with Grandtheft and never slowed down. From them debuting Hunter’s ‘Easy Go’ remix to Zed’s Dead’s DC straight up slaughtering things. The stage became a revolving door of incredible acts. Omar Linx hopped on the table to deliver some classics before getting into his most recent smash ‘Keep It Mello’. Oh and Sleepy Tom and Keys N Krates decided to drop in, cause why not right? In many ways the event was legendary but also felt like another night at The Hoxton. I say that not to disrespect the finale, but rather to highlight the fact that incredible B2Bs, guest appearances and overall amazing vibes are what made The Hoxton the best club in Toronto. Although it’ll never be replaced, let’s the hope its spirit can live on (likely at Velvet Underground). To all the DJs, organizers and staff, I thank you for 6 incredible years and a very special finale. #RIPHoxton.

With that background in scratching, you know they’ll have a party-rocking attitude. Plus, the PK sound system will make #SuperHouse ‘super’ immersive.

This past Saturday was a night that defied expectations several times over. The event was Anna Lunoe’s HYPERHOUSE tour, which saw her touching down at The Hoxton along with DJ Sliink and Vindata. When I saw the line-up I knew I had to be there. I’ve been waiting to see Sliink since 2012, enjoy Vindata and kept hearing about Anna Lunoe. I expected Sliink to murder it, and for the other two to be good, but I greatly undervalued the talent of Vindata and Anna Lunoe. The whole night was incredible from beginning to end. Here’s how it all went down.

Vindata – Shot By Will Selviz

Vindata – Shot By Will Selviz

I got in just before 11 and the crowd was still pretty sparse. The mood was laid-back as people socialized and grabbed drinks while Local DJ/Producer Cosella was warming things up with some deep bass. As Vindata took the stage it seemed the venue instantly grew more packed. The spead out crowd was magnetized to the front of the room. As I moved closer, I warned my brother that their set may be a bit slow for his tastes (I turned out to be very wrong). I’m a casual Vindata fan and expected a mixture of chill trap and future bass. What they delivered was well beyond my expectations in both quality and energy. Yeah, they played some future bass, most notably their Mija collab ‘Better’ (which killed), but they took it so much further. From mashing Green Day into Moombahton, to ‘Ni**as In Paris’ into flute-ridden trap and Mr. Carmack. They started slow, pulling the crowd in and had it in full party mode shortly after. A ‘Panda’ x ‘Purple Lamborghini’ mash-up went off and they even had us crankin’ that Soldier Boy. Midway through the set Anna Lunoe popped up to show some love, and as their set neared it’s end, Sliink came through with some shots of Henny to celebrate with the duo and warm himself up. The scene was a great display of camaraderie and love between the DJs that only made it feel like more of an inclusive party for all.

DJ Sliink – Shot by Will Selviz

Anna Lunoe x DJ Sliink – Shot by Will Selviz

As Sliink took over the decks, he let everyone know where he’s from with ‘Nwxrk’ (Jersey!), the beautiful build and vocals gave way to the rawness of A$AP Ferg’s ‘Work’ and it was on. Sliink showed love to OWSLA boss Skrillex with his classic ‘Cinema’ flip and fellow label mate Yogi with ‘Burial’. With flips of ‘Hotline Bling’ and ‘Show Me Love’ Sliink proved that there’s a Jersey remix for everything. When I heard Ma$e come in for ‘Mo Money, Mo Problems’ it was a wrap. It’s not often you here Ma$e and Skrillex in the same set, but I assure you it’s something special. I went into this set expecting Sliink to kill it, and that’s exactly what he did. Lunoe came out once more to party with Sliink before it was her time to take over.

Anna Lunoe Stance – Shot by Will Selviz

I have a confession. I’ve been sleeping on Anna Lunoe. She’s been on my radar as someone I need to check out and dive into, but I’ve never took the time. That said, I went into her set expecting to see a pretty good house set that would leave me satisfied. What I got instead was straight up fucking wow’d. Anna Lunoe is incredible. From her selection, to her mixing and her energy, she’s everything that makes a DJ great. She bounced across genres as effortlessly as she did the stage. Moving from O.T. Genesis to Gesaffelstein, ‘I Love Kanye’ into rave house and classic Prodigy into Getter x Ghastly. She kept the filthy club vibe from Sliink going for some time and even dropped some Athletixx. She brought in some classic breakbeats before dropping them into some crazy new shit. She proved she can play anything with ease and without losing the crowd for a second. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any more crazy, Hunter Siegel and Autoerotique rolled up for an impromptu b2b with Lunoe. This just added to the ill house party feel that engulfed the night. When the lights finally came on and the music stopped there was no way to feel other than wow’d. HYPERHOUSE was one hell of night.
