2017 is Holly’s breakout year. After bubbling on the low, killing it on SoundCloud and dropping literally hundreds of tracks in the past few years, his consistent grind and innovative sound are starting to pay major dividends. In September Holly won the beat battle at the first annual Goldie Awards, a competition spearheaded by A-Trak and judged by some of the biggest names in music (Mannie Fresh, Destructo, Diplo, Mija, Just Blaze and more). He just released a stellar new EP on Buygore’s Fresh Blood, dropped a sample pack, and is gearing up for a massive tour that sees him hopping from Asia to Europe and the US. Amidst his busy schedule, he was able to carve out some time to chat with us. The conversation covers a range of topics from Portugal’s music scene, to his insane creative output, the Goldie Awards and more. He also drops some gems on life that’ll have you feeling happy to be alive. Check out the interview and Tour Dates below.

What’s the music scene like in Portugal right now? How does it differ from North America?

Honestly I don’t know, haha, it’s my country and I love where I come from but I haven’t paid much attention to what’s happening here at the moment. Portuguese Rap is like the biggest thing here nowadays, but that’s the only thing I know. The difference between Portugal and the North American music-scene wise is incomparable. America is like 50 times Portugal. If in one state they don’t dig a music style, there will be another 10 states where people will love it. In Portugal, due to our size as a country, small audience and due to some issues in music culture, there are a lot of “music styles” that don’t have space to develop here, which isn’t a problem because that makes producers & musicians going outside to look for new things which will help them to develop their music more than if they stayed in Portugal.

What’s one thing about Portugal that you wish the rest of the world knew?

That we are not in South America hahaha. 70% of the people that I talk to in America are like “Oh really? You’re from Portugal? I would love to go to South America one day.”

A song for me can take 5 minutes, 5 hours, 5 days, 5 weeks, 5 months…I don’t know!

You’ve put out a few hundred songs in past few years. How much of your time do you spend producing? How long does it take you to make a song?

I spend a couple hours per day producing. I try always to make between 1-5 ideas or demos per day. A song for me can take 5 minutes, 5 hours, 5 days, 5 weeks, 5 months… I don’t know! Every song is different and it’s always a different feeling and emotion that you need to express so you can’t put that in a box. Just take your time expressing and developing what you want to say and things will happen.

Do you have any tips for other producers to speed up their workflow/output?

They can just try to make at least 3 ideas per day, that’s kind of a good exercise to push for your ideas. Spend one hour in each one and try to diversify as much as you can. I saw an interview of Kanye West a couple years ago where he talked about this subject which helped me a lot with my productivity.

Do you release the majority of the music that you create or do you have a lot of tracks in the vault?

I release the majority yes, but I always keep some of the songs I do as unreleased!

You just won the producer battle at the first annual Goldie Awards. What was the experience like? What was the best part of the experience?

It was incredible, I had a great time and a lot of fun. I wasn’t really expecting anything from that night and then I won and I was like “whaaat”. In some way it was weird to have my music being judged and evaluated as better than other peoples beats, which is something that for me is hard to get because I think there is not good or bad in music, there’s just music and then it’s up to you what you identify the most in your feelings. Besides all that stuff, it was amazing the way this event helped the DJ and beat making culture and community, spotlighting a lot of producers and DJs that the majority don’t know. This experience had a lot of “best parts” but being around the energy of the artists that I look up to the most in this world was definitely one of the highlights.

You’re gearing up for a massive tour. What are you most looking forward to?

Emerging myself in all of the cultures that I am about to explore.

What should fans expect from a Holly live set? Are you playing all of your own music?

I’m not playing all my own music but I usually play between 10 to 20 originals in my sets. I think they can expect a little bit of the journey that I’ve been doing in my artistic path. I play a lot of music that was important to me in different times of my life so I think it’s a good way for people to get to know me better. Music selection says a lot about a person.

You seem to have a very positive outlook on life. What inspired this and how do you keep it that way?

To know that one day I’ll die and that I won’t live forever. Do the best you can while you’re here and just make this place a better place.

Everything excites me in this world, life is such a great experience. You just need to look at it with the right view.

What excites you most in life outside of music?

Everything man. Hugging people, kissing my family, my dog & cat, feeling the grass, fresh air, skateboarding, seeing the ocean, a good sunset, good wine, chocolates, movies, new experiences, being afraid as fuck hahaha. Everything excites me in this world, life is such a great experience. You just need to look at it with the right view.

What’s on the horizon for you in 2018?

I’ll let my music talk for me about this question!

Datsik and Bais Haus have been busy as of lately, particularly when it comes to their collaborative project Ephwurd. Between their monthly radio show, as well as an upcoming EP, the duo is also currently embarking on a North America-wide spring tour to kick off the outdoor musical festivities! Amidst all of this, we had the pleasure to gain some insight and see how things are going – here’s what they had to say on the matter.

How did you guys come together?

We met through Steve Aoki at Identity Fest back in like 2009. We started touring together about 2 years later, and started writing songs on the road. Eventually we had enough material to actually make it into a real project and thus Ephwurd was born!

With Ephwurd we have kinda been going all over the place but our home rests at 128bpm with bass house.

How does the dynamic of producing and touring differ from your solo projects?

Well we’ve been touring together for about 5 years now, so there isn’t much of a difference there. As for production, Datsik’s music is primarily 140 – 150bpm dubstep with a lot of hip hop and Shaolin influence. With Ephwurd we have kinda been going all over the place but our home rests at 128bpm with bass house.

I (Bais Haus) was always a “behind the scenes” kid, writing music for TV and ghost producing for other DJs. Ephwurd was really my first step into the limelight.

How’s the tour been by far? Any memorable/crazy moments that stick out to you?

The tour has been non-stop this month lol. I think one of the best moments so far was eating turkey legs and jousting at MiddleLands after playing in front of like 15,000 kids.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/290832349″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

What’s a tune you’ve enjoyed playing in your sets recently?

Oh man, good question. The Bassnectar remix of Get Deaded is INSANE!!!!

If you could host your own festival(s) with no limitations, what would it look like?

Shambhala lol

June’s almost here – how’s the upcoming Eph’d Up Radio #3 looking so far?

Actually just started hunting for new tracks today ;) Got some good ones to play out. Stay tuned.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/320971341″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

With summer around the corner, what are you guys looking most forward to?

EDC Vegas Main Stage set, Lollapalooza, Shambhala…. Finishing our EP and releasing it ;)

Since you’re both massive lovers of sushi, what are your favourite sashimi/sushi rolls?

Mmmmmmm Suuuuushhhiiiiii….. Well we’ve kinda graduated from all the crazy rolls to just finding the best quality fish out there. New Zealand salmon has been at the top of our list. We will literally crush as much of that as humanly possible. I (Bais Haus) have been going off the deep end with eating weird fish, nothing is off limits anymore. Uni (sea urchin) has become a staple for me and now I’m really into Iwashi (sardine).

Also, finding perfect yellowtail has been like the quest for the holy grail.

We’re really exploring what we are capable of vs. simply releasing non-stop bangers.

What can we expect from you musically in the near future?

A lot of different stuff. Some kids might hate it, others might love it. We’re really exploring what we are capable of vs. simply releasing non-stop bangers. We are excited as hell but also shitting our pants at the same time. We can’t wait for kids to hear what we’ve been cooking up!

The duo has a few more Canadian and American stops remaining before focusing on their festival sets for the quickly-approaching summer. Check out their remaining spring tour dates below. If you can, also catch them during their summer festival run – you won’t be disappointed!

Last night (June 24, 2014), Logic brought his While You Wait Tour to the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto. If you frequent our site, you know that we’re huge fans of the talented up-and-coming artist. So much so, that we named him the Best Rapper Without an Album Out a few months back. I’m pretty sure it goes without saying that we had high expectations for the show and Logic did not disappoint.

Things kicked off with Logic’s DJ Rhetorik warming up the crowd with a heavily narrated set, chalked with hits. It’s the most I’ve ever seen a DJ use the mic while playing, but his stories and comments lead into the tracks well and the crowd seemed to be enjoying it. After a short break, fellow VMG artist Quest took the stage. He was a solid opener dropping some dope bars, getting the crowd amped up and showcasing his skills as an artist. One of the most memorable moments of the set was him dropping his verse off of ’24 Freestyle’. As the verse closed, Rhetorik cut the beat to punctuate the closing lines “VMG, yes n*gga VMG/ Only competition that we see is TDE”. Unsurprisingly this elicited a strong reaction from the crowd. His set closed out with a banging new track and Quest taking a pic with the audience. After which he didn’t hesitate to ask the crowd to check the pic out by following him on Instagram. A brazen but intelligent promotional move that I am sure has been paying off all tour.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/131596557″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

After a short wait, Rhetorik returned to the stage to get the crowd ready for the main event. Anticipation was building until he dropped ‘On The Low’ and Logic came busting out from behind the curtain, killing his verse with an intense energy that carried throughout the show. The hugely talented MC played an excellent cross section of his catalog with tracks off his Young Sinatra mixtape series (‘925’, ‘Feel Good’, ‘Roll Call’, ‘All I Do’) , While You Wait EP (‘Now’,’Alright’) and even a brief preview of one or two tracks off his upcoming debut album.

He took several breaks to slow things down and talk to the audience, tell stories and engage directly with his fans. He even went as far as to pull a kid out of the crowd who was rapping every bar and put him on the spot. To my surprise the fan embraced the opportunity, absolutely killing the second verse with some serious stage presence. The show also saw some interesting breaks where Rhetorik dropped bangers from artists other than the performer. Notably, he dropped a number of Kid Cudi tracks which Logic addressed, “People be like Logic why you playing Kid Cudi in your shows? Cause I Fucking love Kid Cudi!” (seems logical). He went on to shout out Cudi for bringing him on “The Cud Life Tour”. Other standout moments included Logic freestyling while Rhetorrik swapped between a number beats and his acapella version of ‘Dead Presidents III’. Logic opted to spit beatless a number of times throughout the night which was a true highlight; allowing his impeccable flow and annunciation to take center stage.

The night closed out with ‘Common Logic/Midnight Marauders’ which served as a perfect outro. After heavy chanting from the audience, Logic came back out with the fierce energy he started with, dropping ‘Ballin’ as an encore. Overall the show was stellar, Logic reinforced why he is debatably the best rapper on the rise. My only complaint is that the show could have been longer. Clocking in at just over an hour, it wasn’t disappointing, but an extra 15 -25 minutes really would have taken it to the next level. With that said, Logic was at the venue well before the show talking to fans, signing autographs and snapping pictures for anyone who purchased VIP tickets. If you’re a fan of Logic or simply just one of hip-hop, Logic’s live show is a must see. There’s still a few stops left on the tour so be sure check the site here. And don’t forget to follow Logic on Twitter and Facebook.
