As the profound epilogue of The Ineffable Truth tour reaches finality, it only seemed fitting to unearth a preceding antiquity from the extensive arsenal of releases G Jones has to offer over the course of his nearly decade-long dynasty. His first ever vinyl release, ‘Ghetto Bird’ with doshy predates the bulk of G Jones releases but deserves just as much attention today as it received back in 2013 when the track was first released via SATURATE Records.

An exemplary depiction of the creative dexterity and production genius that have enabled G Jones to reign supreme at such length, ‘Ghetto Bird’ begins with a commanding ensemble of horns that give even the opening moments of the track an air of confidence and precision. A vertiginous riser pierces the air, like a frenzied anthem for a robotic warbird, as a brutal mixdown blends seamlessly into pulsing bass notes and a heightened avian refrain.

With a timestamp of nearly 6 years ago, ‘Ghetto Bird’ is a gregarious species and picturesque depiction of a collaboration that fires on all cylinders, solidifying G Jones as a sonic preference of perpetuating infamy.

It’s Thursday and that means it’s time to throw it back with another installment of ‘Tracks You May Have Missed’. Before CRNKN was exploring the wide expanse of electronic genres in which he has dabbled (Future Bass, Deep House, Electro, etc.) the artist was making noise in the Trap scene. CRNKN actually introduced me to a ton of my favourite artists through his ‘It’s A TRAP Summer 2012’ mix (unfortunately it’s no longer online). So today I wanted to share one of my personal favorite tracks of his, a rework of Waka Flocka’s ‘ No Hands’. Utilizing Waka’s ignorant party vocals, nasty 808’s, killer vocal chops and some heavy bass, the tune is sure to have you wylin’ out. Stream below and be sure to snag the free download.

“This is anti Auto-Tune, death of the ringtone/This ain’t for iTunes, this ain’t for sing alongs”. When Jay Z dropped “D.O.A.” in 2009 it made some serious waves. Having the biggest figure in the game denounce one of the most popular trends is sure to turn heads. As a huge hater of Auto-Tune, I was ecstatic with the release, but felt the production could have been harder to match the lyrics. Not long after my wishes were granted when British Bass duo Chase and Status remixed the track. The remix starts out with Jay Z’s short vocal intro over a synth , moving into a quick drum build before dropping into the mind rattling bass lines that make this sound so raw. The beat shuffles between siren-filed builds and bass heavy kicks that punctuate Jay Z’s verses perfectly. I’m a huge fan of No I.D. but I’ve always found this version to be far superior to the original. The rework makes it truly feel like “This is practically assault with a deadly weapon”. On top of all this, it has proven to be well ahead of it’s time. After nearly 5 years it still sounds fresh enough to drop in any bass set (Trap/Dubstep/etc.). I think this remix deserves a “moment of silence” for how hard the British duo killed it.

It’s about to go down! As I was thinking about what track we would use for this week’s #tbt, I kept going back to the late 90’s era of rap. I reached out a ClassyVlassy to find out what he thought would be good. He mentioned a Jay track from the DJ Clue Professional series. I thought about it for a while throughout the day and then it hit me. DMX. Kids today either have no idea about who X is, think he’s a cat that got blackballed for being on drugs or calling out some industry heads. Darkman X is a cat that was known for bringing raw, gritty lyrics. The track “Keep Your Shit The Hardest” comes off of DMX’s second album Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood. Press play below and prepare yourself for some hard bars and a dirty beat courtesy of Swizz Beatz.

The album was entirely produced by No I.D. and I Used to Love H.E.R. has a really smooth beat. In regular 90’s fashion it keeps your head knocking from beginning to end. The track itself is about Hip Hop personified as a woman and throughout the track, Common takes the listener through a journey of her life and evolution. You may recognize the opening bars from Kanye’s “Homecoming“, but that was Kanye paying homage to the Chi-town OG.

As you follow Common run through Hip Hop’s life, he paints a crazy vivid picture of how the music impacts his life and how the genre changes as it spreads to different coasts. Check out the track below with the original video and while you reminisce sound off in the comments on how you feel about the state of hip hop.

Top down, chrome spinning! Our ‘Tracks You May Have Missed’ series continues and today’s throwback comes from the malicious music pushing duo known as Clipse. Comprised of Pusha T (GOOD Music) and Malice (now, No) the coke dealers-turned-rappers (who are also brothers) formed a duo that had the streets and clubs buzzing with their raw flow and lyrics. It helped that Skateboard P and Chad Hugo; together as The Neptunes, handled production for these cats. Nonetheless, these guys dropped some serious gems in the early 2000’s (see: Grindin’, What Happened to that Boy). When The Last Time is also one of those tracks. This track sits pretty on their major label debut “Lord Willin'”. Hopefully, you didn’t miss this track (I mean really, hopefully you didn’t, its like Peruvian coke type shit), but in the case you did, we got you covered. The beat is nuts and the brothers from Virginia Beach deliver some raw bars. Peep the track below!

“Chick was crazy, gave her crazy space
What did it the whip appeal, or my baby face?”

Y’all know who! For this weeks #tbt series we look back at one of the illest <del>back and fourth</del> tracks from Brooklyn native Fabolous. The original track, Keeping It Gangsta was a smash. It actually got spins on the radio back in ’03 when the album dropped. But its the remix, the bonus track on the album, that really holds it down for the “gangsta” in us all. The remix features opening back and fourth bars from two members of The LOX – Jadakiss and Styles P. These guys kick the track off with some really dope bars. After the catchy, sing-along hook, Fabolous and Paul Cain trade bars. Fab outshines Paul Cain, but overall the collaborative verse is pretty dope. Next up are Billy Danze and Lil Fame from M.O.P. These cats always bringing high level energy to their verses and this time is no different. Check the track below. If you’ve heard this before from a DJ Clue mixtape you might recognize there’s an evil laugh soundbite missing from the intro, nonetheless, the track still goes and is definitely one of the best tracks from Fabolous.

“I realize, I’m supposed to reach for the skies/ Never let somebody try to tell you otherwise”

To be perfectly honest, the track really does speak for itself, so I’ll keep it short. This track is uplifting and motivating all in itself. The beat follows a hard hitting boom-boom bap pattern. The keys bring brightness to this almost dark and heavy track. Black Thought absolutely kills this. Every bar is actually amazing and incredibly motivating. John Legend on the hook is a great fit and it all comes together perfectly. Have a listen and let us know if you FUXWITHIT.

Throwing it back to 2007! For this weeks Tracks You May Have Missed series we’re taking it back to Classified’s 2007 album While You Were Sleeping. Personally, this is one album I bumped for a whole summer. Everyday, through and through. This was a compilation album that had both released and unreleased material and one of the stand out tracks on the album is what we’ve picked to highlight today. Ain’t Hard to Find is a great song.

Let’s start with the production. The beat is produced by Classified himself. He’s one of the rappers out there that can actually put a track together from beginning to end. This beat bangs! The drums hit hard and the horns give the track that big sound. Its fast paced and high energy. No wonder I used to listen to it before heading in to work. Ha!

The verses on this track come from Mic Boyd (Class’s Brother) and the Halflife Records boss himself, Classified on the second verse. Both Mic Boyd and Classified personify hip hop as the love of their lives and walk us through their turbulent relationships as independent artists. The verses are tight. But an awesome addition to this track is Jordan Croucher who lends his voice to the track. This dude can sing.

This is a nice joint. The Canadian kids are nice, stop sleeping! Peep below.
