Highlights of this year’s lineup include the likes of Subtronics, who is returning for the first time since 2019. Zeds Dead is making their WAKAAN Festival debut this year for a solo set as well as the first-ever Zeds Dead b2b Liquid Stranger set. Freddy Todd and Of The Trees will be performing as their collaborative BLAAP project. An official 1985 Music takeover will feature label head Alix Perez, along with Torcha, Hyroglifics, and Monty. Barclay Crenshaw is returning after electrifying performances the last two years that helped cement his resurgence as a bass music icon. The duo of jordnmoody and Ujuu will be on stage together as FLORA. As founder of WAKAAN, Liquid Stranger himself is also performing three exclusive sets, including a throwback set with a list of not-yet-announced friends.

There is more to WAKAAN than just the music. The festival features a diverse array of workshops, ranging from such topics as health and wellness to music production. The grounds of Mulberry Mountain are scattered with art installations, merch vendors, games, and more. In particular, this year features the return of Soul Spin Art Gallery, where fans can create their very own custom vinyl records that will be kept on the mountain for years to come.

In the past years that I’ve attended WAKAAN, the crowd energy has been unreal. There is a real, concerted effort on the part of these festival-goers to make friends and inspire each other. I’ve told my life story to a stranger on the way to a Port-a-Potty. I’ve always left with more trinkets than I arrived with. I’ve been handed hors d’oeuvres from people passing by mid-headliner. I’ve played Super Smash Brothers and watched Adventure Time on a screen in the middle of the forest. The sense of community that this festival has is something to behold, and I hope everyone gets to at least once.

Bringing the track to a whole new level. Fitting in perfectly with his collaborator’s workflow. And tying it together into a perfect knot of bliss. Not to mention how professional and crisp sounding their drums are. They’re truly bringing in 2021 in a fun and joyful manner. Reminding us how the good times will roll once again in the future. There’s nothing but positive vibes and atmosphere in this piece. Making your day shine much brighter.

Freeform master, Ujuu has created some of the most creative and out of the box sounding tracks. He’s known for his hard-hitting drums and nasty sound design. His elements take you away into outer space and beyond. Don’t sleep on RYNS either because he’s another force to be reckoned with. His experimental sound design mixed with groovy rhythms makes this track a power collaboration between the two.

‘Run Up’ is a fun and wild ride to say the least. The dynamic duo wastes no time introducing their beefy bass design at the beginning. Turning into a buildup, it leaves the listener waiting with excitement and awe. Once that chorus kicks in, you’re transported into their own utopia. They both know how to fill those little pockets of space with interesting fills to accompany a distorted lead. It brings it all together to form a trippy journey of sound and rhythm. There’s a surprise lurking in every corner, keeping it fresh throughout the whole experience.

If you love weird and heavy trap music, this one is for you. Ujuu and RYNS continue to impress themselves and their listeners with every release. ‘Run Up’ is a wonderful tribute to their friendship as artists and creatives. ‘FIU 2.0’ is an emphatic dive into a full-spectrum of human emotion conveyed through frequency, with Moody explaining “I came up with the lyrics when I was in a pretty dark place mentally earlier this year.  Looking back, I guess the lyrics are just a representation of how I felt about myself at the time. It’s not pretty, but I think many people can relate to feeling similar at some point throughout their life. Plus, it’s a double entendre, which I thought would be pretty fitting for a dark bass tune.“

The genius dichotomy created between the two aspects of human emotion creates this immensely interesting power struggle between darkness and aggression, a reflection of the despair that we all experience at times and the accompanying frustration and anger that comes with it. The vocals “I always fuck it up, I never gave a fuck” are self-defeating, with a detachment from caring and self-preservation readily palpable.

Moody explains that this version came about when “Issac (Ujuu) sent me the first draft of the tune. He said he’d been listening to a lot of bd hbt & yojas and started this tune inspired by that sound. After working on it a bit, I started digging for an acapella of some sort to chop up over the top. Once I dropped the FIU vocals in, it was pretty much a wrap. They fit so perfectly and aligned so well with the overall vibe of the track.“

Don’t let the somber atmosphere at the beginning fool you, this track is the definition of massive, with skull-rattling low end and the familiar rush of the sonic equivalent of shotgunning a redbull. Utilizing an ominous melody over the top before backhanding you with aggression, ‘FIU 2.0’ amounts to nothing short of a fully-fledged success. The sound design is immaculate, the vibes coat your body like electricity, and the impulse to put it constantly on repeat is intensely seductive. If you’re interested if these two have more projects in the works, fear not, as Schaffer informs us “We are constantly sending projects back and forth. :) You will def be hearing a couple more tunes from us as well as our side project ‘Fioritura’ later on down the road.“

Individually though, Ujuu will be opening for the Lost Dogz at the Mousetrap in Indianapolis on November 23rd, and Jordnmoody has several more collabs in the near future.
