Anyone who was around during the mid-2010s SoundCloud golden era will put the Lost Dogz crew on a pedestal. These pioneering mad lads have spent years crafting an iconic sound that may as well be its own genre at this point. EAZYBAKED, Untitld, Vide, and the rest of the crew have inspired an entire generation of underground producers to embrace the art of experimenting with whatever wickedly imaginative sound designs they can get their computer processors to handle. Oozing with hip-hop influence and raw dubstep oomph, a Lost Dogz track is positively unmistakable when you hear it.

With the founding members largely busy pursuing solo endeavors in recent years, we haven’t seen a full-fledged compilation from the group since the 2019 Off the Chain EP… until now. Enter VOL. 1, a compilation featuring eight of our favorite canine friends with their many years-honed production skills on full display. There’s a lot to be said about each of these tracks individually, but to make a long story short, this compilation comes across as an unabashed flex on the beatmaker scene. This is the kind of release that tells everyone else to “step it the fuck up.”

To celebrate the compilation’s release, we chatted with Milano to get an insight into the mind and creative process of one of the true Lost Dogz OGs (with some exclusive lore to boot). Check out what he had to share with us below.

What was your first experience with electronic/dance music (as a listener, not a producer)?

One of my best friends showed me a Flosstradamus song in his new jeep at the skatepark. I’d never heard anything like that before and I kinda got hooked. My first electronic show was actually Pretty Lights though, in like 2012.

Likewise, what was your inspiration for becoming a producer? Any artists in particular that really drew you in?

Once I experienced it live, the way the speakers rattled your body honestly blew my mind. I became obsessed with weird noises. I saw artists like Flume, Herobust, Mr. Carmack, RL Grime, and was just inspired to try and create.

Do you play any live instruments?

0 live instruments for me. Just an obsessed kid with a computer!

How did you and Lost Dogz link up? When we interviewed Untitld, he mentioned that you had said “no” the first time he asked you to join, so what made you change your mind?

Hahahaha I saw the SoundCloud with a super clean banner. And it just looked fun. Had 0 tracks, 0 followers, and hit him back up and said “yoooo I’m actually down.”

I actually usually don’t go into a song with much of an idea ever.

Walk us through your creative process a bit. How do you go from turning an idea for a tune into reality?

I actually usually don’t go into a song with much of an idea ever. Unless it’s a remix. But I usually start by writing drums. Then going backwards and creating elements to go into those drums (an intro). As far as sound design I never really have a goal and kinda like to go off the rails with wavetable synths and resampling. Always ends up being a happy accident that sparks creativity.

A lot of artists are pivoting toward the use of AI in their workflow. What are your thoughts on the trend?

I think as long as we use AI as a Tool and don’t let it actually write or create the art. It can be useful. I’m a huge Kaelin Ellis fan and love the way he plays with AI in his videos!

Do you try to differentiate the sound of your festival sets vs. club sets? If so, how?

Not really. Festival sets might be a little “more planned” as far as a cool intro, VIP’s, etc.. but other than that I’m just always playing my music, my friends music, and music I think will get people weird.

What can fans expect from you over the course of the next year? Any new releases, special sets, streams, etc. in the works?

Just going to be writing as much music as possible and working with my manager to try and take this project to the next level.

Let’s say you’re only allowed to listen to one music genre for the rest of your life (non-electronic). What would you choose?

Probably Classical rock, or Rnb.

I’m a big fan of the album art for your self-released tracks. Do you make them yourself or do you commission someone to help?

I do make most of them! I’ve had a few friends and fans help me out a few times though.

What made this the right time for a new Lost Dogz compilation? Can you tell us a bit about your track on the album?

We haven’t dropped a Lost Dogz comp since we went on the “off the chain” tour back in 2019. We all just got busy with our own projects and growing up to be honest. But we’ve stayed in contact almost everyday for the last 6 years and thought it would be a perfect time to come back.

My track is called “gibs” and it’s actually one I was sitting on for a while. Very influenced by Daggz. I think it’s very simple and gets the point across that I love simple wet music lol.

We keep each other going and writing music and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

What’s been the biggest highlight of your music career?

Without a doubt meeting my Lost Dogz brothers. We keep each other going and writing music and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. As far as experiences, getting to perform at Shambhala was an absolute moment for me and always will be.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that your fans might not already know. Anything at all!

I am obsessed with spicy foods and wanna create a hot sauce company one day.

I’ve always admired the musical niche Untitld inhabits, whatever one chooses to call it. It’s not quite trap, not quite dubstep, but expressly somewhere in-between with its emphasis on swing-heavy percussion and raucously punching sub-bass. He is a shining example of just how creative and innovative sound design can be with the right talent behind it. It’s a true pleasure to have him featured for this guest mix, so let’s get into it!

We appreciate you hopping on this opportunity to release a guest mix with us! How’s life been for you lately?

Life’s been good! Had a lot happen that’s changed the day-to-day living a bit but other than that I can’t complain.

Is there a particular theme or vibe to this mix? What exactly are our listeners in for?

You can expect a lot of music from myself, my homies and artists I’m currently obsessed with. Been trying to mix multiple genres in my sets so hope you like it!

How long have you been producing music? What first got you hooked?

I’ve been producing music for about 10 years now? I’ve always been drawn to it, I played guitar for almost my whole life as well as some other instruments.

What got me hooked on electronic music though was wondering how the fuck they made sounds like that on a computer.

What inspired the name “Untitld?”

Origin story time. When you open a new project in Ableton, the default name is “untitled”. Take out the “e” and that’s where the inspiration came from.

Your tunes have always exhibited such a heavy trap influence. What would you say to those who claim the genre is dead in 2024?

I don’t really think genres can die off? Sure people might not be listening or booking “trap” artists like they were in 2014 but who cares honestly.

Maybe it’s just me not paying enough attention, but it seems like you don’t release music as frequently now as you did, say, five years ago. Is there a particular reason you stepped back a bit?

I’ve definitely taken a step back from releasing as much music as I used to. Didn’t feel like what I was putting out was a good representation of what I wanted the whole “Untitld” project to be.

Took some time to figure out but we are so fucking back baby. Expect a whole lot of new music from ya boy soon.

How did you get involved with the Lost Dogz crew?

Time for some Lost Dogz lore. It all started when a 14-year-old Abelation messaged me saying we should start a group with all the homies.

Can’t remember the original name he suggested but I remember I didn’t fuck with it. Started hitting up homies via SoundCloud messages (Milano said no the first time I asked him to join) and slowly got the group together.

We still needed a name though, so the next day I’m driving and looked up at this billboard that said, “Found a lost dog? Call our number”. Messaged the homies saying I had our name and the rest is history.

Did you have a New Year’s resolution for 2024? Any personal or music-oriented goals you’re trying to reach this year?

My New Year’s resolution was to get my finances up and my mental health locked in. Still working on both those though!

Outside of producing, what are your favorite ways to spend your free time?

I love playing video games, reading, and watching documentaries! I actually just watched Game of Thrones for the first time and just bought the books to read.

Who are some lesser-known artists that are absolutely blowing you away at the moment, electronic or otherwise?

Not sure if he’s considered lesser known but MPH is fucking insane. Love everything that he puts out. More in the realm of bass music I gotta go with Snuffy and asáu, both these kids are cracked.

Do you have an end goal for Untitld as an artistic project, or are you just taking it day-by-day and seeing where the winds blow? To follow-up, where you do you see yourself five years from now?

No end goal really. I just like making music. 5 years from now I hope I’m happy and traveling the world!

Is music your only artistic passion or are there others?

Music is definitely my one true passion. I’ve tried drawing and other art forms but they’ve never clicked for me.

Do you have any words of wisdom for your fellow music-makers out there?

Only thing I have to say is remember the whole reason you started making music in the first place! Enjoy yourself and don’t force the funk.

I was an extra in the “Straight Out of Compton” movie. I also have the flattest fucking feet ever.

The first track, ‘Suplex,’ wastes no time establishing the vibe of the EP. It is a veritable speaker-flexer for the entirety of its three-minute run and demands a subwoofer to be heard to the fullest extent. The harpsichord-like synths are reminiscent of the early days of trap music while the basslines fit neatly within the more recent catalogue of tracks from both artists.

Up next, ‘Chokehold’ takes the ears for a spin with an immediate switch-up into house basslines and a bounce that’s difficult to hear and remain sitting still. Between the house breaks, the duo experiment with some truly wonky synths and tease the listener with orchestral-sounding chords that seem to fit right in alongside the lower frequencies.

Finally, ‘Money’ allows the listener a brief respite during its intro until it begins roaring through the speakers on the first drop. Decidedly different from ‘Suplex’ but still retaining the characteristic Lost Dogz sound with its heavy bass, this track is sure to get a dance floor moving and grooving.

The collection incorporates six elaborate tracks composed by different members from the pound including Abelation, EAZYBAKED, Milano, sumthin sumthin, Untitld, and vide. Each artist presents engaging productions that involve intricate low end paired with complex percussion arrangements. The synergy between this collective permeates throughout this project from beginning to end.

vide introduces the first track ‘Sub Sonar,’ that bounces around wompy boom-bap lines before the drum and bass leads takeover. Untitld then delivers ‘American Spirit,’ which takes Childish Gambino’s ‘This is America’ vocals and smashes them into a left field bass oblivion. sumthin sumthin follows this up with ‘Drip,’ an audible leak that sends frequencies deeper and deeper into an unknown realm. Next up is Milano with ‘Anti Seed,’ a track that highlights crisp sound design and fabricates a union between trap and forward thinking bass. ‘Sooped’ by EAZYBAKED is a grimy depiction of another dimension. Finally, ‘Barricade Me’ by Abelation pulls you the rest of the way into this new realm of existence, leaving you asking if this tune is allowed to be legal.
