Few artists in the bass realm can create completely new sonic universes with their music. KOAN Sound, Culprate, False Noise and Alon Mor are names that come to mind when the words musical expedition are thrown around, but one name that sometimes falls under the radar, and wrongly so, is Hudson Lee. From manning Upscale, a label that showcases mind-boggling journeys from a plethora of similar-minded artists, to creating his own unique masterpieces, the Canadian producer has made it his mission to share exquisitely crafted works, no matter the origin.

Continuing upon this theme today, we get to experience Hudson Lee’s sophomore album in full via his label, and as one could expect, the twelve-track, fifty-two-minute Reflex Angle is a display of true sonic mastery. A follow-up to the equally-entertaining Headspaces from 2019, Reflex Angle builds upon the years of work that Hudson Lee has poured into his craft and culminates in a fantastic voyage through bass, melodies and textures.

Reflex Angle is not just a collection of individual songs slapped together to form an album – it’s a narrative told through sound that gives listeners a glimpse into the mind of a genius. Featuring tracks with longtime friends and frequent collaborators False Noise, Alexander Panos and Frequent, as well as nine solo works, the project spans a multitude of genres and styles that go beyond bass music without ever sounding disconnected or out of place; a skill that Hudson Lee et al. have all conquered gracefully. Massive, all-encompassing basses that wrap your entire soul in an oddly soothing fashion are as present as soft, complex melodies that will make you feel as if you are floating through delicate pink clouds. Hudson Lee manages to balance contrast perfectly in his album, creating an equilibrium between highs and lows throughout the ensemble.

Simply put, Reflex Angle is incredible. Don’t miss it below, and be sure to catch Upscale Fest happening on Twitch this weekend.

As a masterful story-teller through his music and resident artist of Upscale Recordings, Canopy has developed a thorough catalog of impressive, however somewhat under-appreciated, musical expeditions over the years. With productions that fall under the immense umbrella of bass music yet that do not quite fall within a specific genre, the UK-based producer has steadily pushed the boundaries of electronic music time and time again in a similar fashion as fellow Upscale artists and other greats such as KOAN Sound and Ekcle.

Today, Canopy looks to make a statement that will hopefully bring his sound to the masses with the release of his debut album, Refraction. From a brief introduction and interlude clocking in at less than a minute, to orchestral journeys such as ‘Flare’ and ‘Incandescent’ spanning more than six minutes, Refraction is an all-encompassing, soul-engulfing odyssey through bass music that is worthy of multiple listens from start to finish.

Don’t go into this album expecting eight mainstage-ready pieces. Refraction is introspective, meant for listening in a peaceful setting that allows one to open their mind to the beauty of sounds, melodies and textures. Each track of the project is an important piece to the puzzle that is the album, while individually, the tracks hold well on their own and listeners are able to pick and choose personal favourites among the plenty. There’s no shortage of highs and lows, though, as songs such as ‘Opalescence’ and ‘Strobe’ boast their fair share of core-rattling basses, although dosed over more serene, mystical soundscapes.

Don’t miss Canopy’s debut album below.

In an era where it is incredibly common to stumble upon generic, repetitive bass music, there is nothing more invigorating than finding an artist who continuously breaks these barriers of conformity. A prime example of this statement is Frequent, who recently dropped a dual single titled ‘The Goop // Hold My Tongue’ that embodies a fresh, forward-thinking mindset. Out now…

Out now on Upscale, Frequent’s newest two-track offering is groovy yet gritty. It is melodic, yet mean. A distorted synths kicks off ‘The Goop’ before rhythmic drums are introduced to carry the groove of the track forward. Slowly yet surely, Frequent adds a multitude of layers ranging from vocals chops, to plucky lasers, to funky fills, all to give the bass tune an unnatural yet fitting danceable feel. The melodies and arrangements behind ‘The Goop’ are hypnotizing while the synths and sounds are sure to unleash your bass face. ‘Hold My Tongue’ is equally as dangerous, as Frequent has created a high-energy heater that will leave you breathless through its raw ingenuity.
