Real heads know Milano.

Anyone who was around during the mid-2010s SoundCloud golden era will put the Lost Dogz crew on a pedestal. These pioneering mad lads have spent years crafting an iconic sound that may as well be its own genre at this point. EAZYBAKED, Untitld, Vide, and the rest of the crew have inspired an entire generation of underground producers to embrace the art of experimenting with whatever wickedly imaginative sound designs they can get their computer processors to handle. Oozing with hip-hop influence and raw dubstep oomph, a Lost Dogz track is positively unmistakable when you hear it.

With the founding members largely busy pursuing solo endeavors in recent years, we haven’t seen a full-fledged compilation from the group since the 2019 Off the Chain EP… until now. Enter VOL. 1, a compilation featuring eight of our favorite canine friends with their many years-honed production skills on full display. There’s a lot to be said about each of these tracks individually, but to make a long story short, this compilation comes across as an unabashed flex on the beatmaker scene. This is the kind of release that tells everyone else to “step it the fuck up.”

To celebrate the compilation’s release, we chatted with Milano to get an insight into the mind and creative process of one of the true Lost Dogz OGs (with some exclusive lore to boot). Check out what he had to share with us below.

What was your first experience with electronic/dance music (as a listener, not a producer)?

One of my best friends showed me a Flosstradamus song in his new jeep at the skatepark. I’d never heard anything like that before and I kinda got hooked. My first electronic show was actually Pretty Lights though, in like 2012.

Likewise, what was your inspiration for becoming a producer? Any artists in particular that really drew you in?

Once I experienced it live, the way the speakers rattled your body honestly blew my mind. I became obsessed with weird noises. I saw artists like Flume, Herobust, Mr. Carmack, RL Grime, and was just inspired to try and create.

Do you play any live instruments?

0 live instruments for me. Just an obsessed kid with a computer!

How did you and Lost Dogz link up? When we interviewed Untitld, he mentioned that you had said “no” the first time he asked you to join, so what made you change your mind?

Hahahaha I saw the SoundCloud with a super clean banner. And it just looked fun. Had 0 tracks, 0 followers, and hit him back up and said “yoooo I’m actually down.”

I actually usually don’t go into a song with much of an idea ever.

Walk us through your creative process a bit. How do you go from turning an idea for a tune into reality?

I actually usually don’t go into a song with much of an idea ever. Unless it’s a remix. But I usually start by writing drums. Then going backwards and creating elements to go into those drums (an intro). As far as sound design I never really have a goal and kinda like to go off the rails with wavetable synths and resampling. Always ends up being a happy accident that sparks creativity.

A lot of artists are pivoting toward the use of AI in their workflow. What are your thoughts on the trend?

I think as long as we use AI as a Tool and don’t let it actually write or create the art. It can be useful. I’m a huge Kaelin Ellis fan and love the way he plays with AI in his videos!

Do you try to differentiate the sound of your festival sets vs. club sets? If so, how?

Not really. Festival sets might be a little “more planned” as far as a cool intro, VIP’s, etc.. but other than that I’m just always playing my music, my friends music, and music I think will get people weird.

What can fans expect from you over the course of the next year? Any new releases, special sets, streams, etc. in the works?

Just going to be writing as much music as possible and working with my manager to try and take this project to the next level.

Let’s say you’re only allowed to listen to one music genre for the rest of your life (non-electronic). What would you choose?

Probably Classical rock, or Rnb.

I’m a big fan of the album art for your self-released tracks. Do you make them yourself or do you commission someone to help?

I do make most of them! I’ve had a few friends and fans help me out a few times though.

What made this the right time for a new Lost Dogz compilation? Can you tell us a bit about your track on the album?

We haven’t dropped a Lost Dogz comp since we went on the “off the chain” tour back in 2019. We all just got busy with our own projects and growing up to be honest. But we’ve stayed in contact almost everyday for the last 6 years and thought it would be a perfect time to come back.

My track is called “gibs” and it’s actually one I was sitting on for a while. Very influenced by Daggz. I think it’s very simple and gets the point across that I love simple wet music lol.

We keep each other going and writing music and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

What’s been the biggest highlight of your music career?

Without a doubt meeting my Lost Dogz brothers. We keep each other going and writing music and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. As far as experiences, getting to perform at Shambhala was an absolute moment for me and always will be.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that your fans might not already know. Anything at all!

I am obsessed with spicy foods and wanna create a hot sauce company one day.

You can keep up with Milano by following his socials here.

Production master, vide has blessed us all with something special. His brand new EP, rain will expand your mind to the fullest degree. Filled with thick bass lines, leads and impactful drums, he’s taken his production to whole other realm with this. No surprise because he’s been killing it within the underground. Filling your souls with distorted ear candy with each release. Nothing but inspiring to see how far this artist has come. And now he’s back and better than ever. He even recruited heavy hitter, saka in on the vision to make the project even crazier. So if you’re a fan of gritty trap music, you definitely won’t want to miss out on this.

The rain EP is filled with many unique and stylish characteristics. Right from the start of the project, you’re transported into a jungle filled with mysteries and treasures waiting to be discovered. And a strange and enticing ritual waiting to be fulfilled. vide did not play around when creating these gems. Each track is different from the last but still holds his signature flame. From his track, ‘rituals,’ holding distorted bass lines which will make your heads spin, to a song called ‘ruins,’ which is more of a vibe filled pleasure, it’s easy to say he’s taken himself out of his comfort zone, and into a brand new light for which he’s excelling with his production. Every sound and second will leave your mouth open with satisfaction and inner grace. Telling you his efforts paid off truly. It’s a journey for all bass lovers to embark on. Leaving them off with something different and greater from their previous expectations.

Make sure to go support vide and his high-energy art by streaming his rain EP everywhere!

With the release of his crashed EP only a few months in the rearview, Baltimore beatsmith vide returns to the release calendars after a soft period of latency with a track equally weighted for fans of eclectic production and leftfield bass alike. Utilizing ‘Jokes’ from tsuruda’s merciless FUBAR EP from last October as his weapon of choice, vide initiates a sense of familiarity with the leaden string introduction from the original before setting to work with components from his own production arsenal. Adopting a similar jagged, yet oddly rhythmic beat structure vide’s take on the track demonstrates a tangible depth with viscous layers of bass, neatly woven fills and an optimal balance between new and old.

Midway through last month, Baltimore-based vide dropped a scorching release via Lost Dogz titled ‘passage’, which was used as a tactful method of revealing the announcement of the Maryland native’s forthcoming crashed EP. Featuring a menagerie of textured bass and snappy percussion, ‘passage’ flows with unmatched depth and an immediate audible impact that merely heightened the anticipation for the full project release.

After nearly a month-long cliffhanger, crashed is duly groomed and prepared for the public ear and the reveal of the title-track makes an ideal method of kicking the project into full swing. “The whole concept behind the idea of ‘crashed’ came to me after struggling over the same track for months on end. Almost everything I tried didn’t feel right to me…I felt as if I had lost my footing as far as what I was doing with this song and the project as a whole. I truly had ‘crashed’ from a creative and artistic standpoint,” vide shares regarding some of the internal hindrances that can make it difficult for a producer to ever feel holistically satisfied with a track.

They say the more arduous the journey, the sweeter the reward and vide’s EP hits indubitably on those notes. Check out ‘crashed’ below, and be sure to keep an eye out for the remainder of the project, which releases on all major platforms tomorrow!

Lost Dogz have left their paw print on the scene this year. Having their first takeover at The Untz Festival, they have only grown in stature since then. Some other festival takeovers include Santa Cruz Music Fest, Stilldream and Lightning In A Bottle. Accumulating a vast fan base, it was only suitable to launch their own tour. Phase one kicks off in just a few days and to properly prepare they have released the official Off The Chain tour compilation.

The collection incorporates six elaborate tracks composed by different members from the pound including Abelation, EAZYBAKED, Milano, sumthin sumthin, Untitld, and vide. Each artist presents engaging productions that involve intricate low end paired with complex percussion arrangements. The synergy between this collective permeates throughout this project from beginning to end.

vide introduces the first track ‘Sub Sonar,’ that bounces around wompy boom-bap lines before the drum and bass leads takeover. Untitld then delivers ‘American Spirit,’ which takes Childish Gambino’s ‘This is America’ vocals and smashes them into a left field bass oblivion. sumthin sumthin follows this up with ‘Drip,’ an audible leak that sends frequencies deeper and deeper into an unknown realm. Next up is Milano with ‘Anti Seed,’ a track that highlights crisp sound design and fabricates a union between trap and forward thinking bass. ‘Sooped’ by EAZYBAKED is a grimy depiction of another dimension. Finally, ‘Barricade Me’ by Abelation pulls you the rest of the way into this new realm of existence, leaving you asking if this tune is allowed to be legal.

Catch the Off The Chain Tour starting September 21st in Minot, ME and listen to the full compilation below.

2019 has proven to be a massive year for the Lost Dogz. With festival takeovers nationwide and a steady release of innovative music, it is safe to claim the dog pound as one of the top collectives to exist right now. Made up of members such as Abelation, milano, sumthin sumthin, CAMBOT and more, their sound is truly breathing new life into the realms of forward-thinking bass.

The latest collaboration comes from the team of vide and EAZYBAKED in ‘Backseat Jameson.’ Smacking through the speakers at a high velocity, the intro synth is powerful enough to cause a natural disaster. It then goes on to present unmatched bass arrangements that resonate an indefectible frequency.

It appears as they have broke loose from the kennel and said fuck a collar with riotous intentions in ‘Backseat Jameson’. The second drop maintains a familiarity of the first while being diverse enough to keep listeners fully immersed. An aggressive yet delightful audial experience that teases at a forthcoming announcement later this week. Another incomparable collab keeps this pack at the forefront of the experimental bass community.

As August comes to a close, it means summer is nearly over. Not to worry, you know we’re always bringing the heat with Focus Five. This month’s edition is wide-ranging as per usual. We’ve got Himmel and Ike blending trap, future bass and future beat sounds for a stunning journey, Kotek bringing a myriad of bass, Petticoat packing a Wave Racer meets TNGHT vibe and a dark bass mastermind named vide. These are the 5 artists you need to know this month.

Himmel

DMV-based Himmel is yet another producer who’s been skating on the edge of our radar for some time. With his tracks constantly reposted in our SoundCloud stream and few spots in our FUXWITHITFRIDAYS playlist, I felt it was due time to properly shine the light on this talented beat-smith. Himmel occupies a perfect position between future beat and trap. His music is filled with rays of sunshine, distorted soul, glimmering keys and slapping 808s. It possesses a majestic, even regal undertone with no shortage of bump. With releases on Jadu Dala, Phuture Collective, below the surface and collabs with Chromonicci, umru and stripess, Himmel has some of the best out on his side, and you can add us to that ever-growing list of supporters.
–C

Ike

There’s something special about connecting with nature. Watching the sun set, hiking a mountain or strolling next to a stunning lake evokes a set of emotions and a sense of connectivity that predates recorded time. A feeling that we are all one with the earth. Because of its organic nature, it’s hard to synthesize the feeling, to distill it into a new form. But it’s not impossible. Salt Lake City based producer Ike has achieved this simulation musically. Each work embodies the feeling of reconnecting with the earth. He pulls natural elements like the sounds of flowing water and birds chirping and pairs them with serotonin spiking synths or deep breaths. This allows each song to simulate both the sound and emotional pull of being outside somewhere special. His last 3 releases ‘Comfort,’ ‘Duck Pond,’ and ‘Goldfish’ personify this to perfection. Whether you’re trying to enhance the joys of the summer or survive the winter blues, Ike will be sure to add a little extra sunshine in your life.
–C

Kotek

Coming off two killer collabs with the likes of Gramatik and Rezz (their second venture), this sensation’s stock is well on the rise. Hailing from the Canadian west coast (quickly becoming the best, bass coast), Kotek first caught my ear with the interstellar dream funk dazzler ‘Aurora’. His brilliance is on full display there as he delivers deft drum work, resplendent riffs and a sublime soundscape, all woven together in a fantastic future bass banger. This must’ve caught the ear of Rezz as she tapped him to take part in ‘Ascension’, one of the least earthbound bangers in Rezz’s rancorous catalog. And really this is where things started to explode for Kotek as originals ‘Red Shift’ and ‘Tangent’ teased the tremendous talent he controls. For my money, no one’s had a bigger August than Kotek with the aforementioned collabs, his own fire original in ‘Reconfiguration’ and my personal favourite, his remix of The Funk Hunters ‘Say Something’. It’s all there: dazzling design, funky fat bass, and punchy percussion. No wonder it won the remix contest. After the waves he’s made this month, we shouldn’t be surprised when a tsunami of support comes rolling in.
–OJ

Petticoat

If any of the above weren’t on your radar, there’s pretty good odds this talent hasn’t even made a blip. Despite coverage from Indie Shuffle touting ‘Pompous’ as something Hudson Mohawke fans will love (I definitely do), California’s David Halsey aka Petticoat still only has 59 Soundcloud followers at the time of writing. Maybe the world isn’t ready for his fast paced sci-fi, future fantasy feels, but I for one love the rush of energy his tracks exude, and not just because I’m reminded of Wave Racer (particularly in the aforementioned production). Following up that debut original, Petticoat has unleashed ‘Ointment’ and ‘Ooze’, two tracks that utilize seemingly endless instrumentation, pulling from countless genres and styles. They bump, bang, sparkle and shine. They feel raw, yet are obviously polished for maximum sonic sensation. If you’re in the market for masterful, musical madness look no further than Petticoat.
–OJ

vide

It feels like we could have a lost dog in this feature almost every month. The collective is at the forefront of bass music and vide is the latest pup to turn our heads with his deep barks. Most recently he made waves with a wildly wonky remix of RL Grime & djemba djemba’s ‘Valhalla’. Anytime an artist can take on a classic and make it their own, deserves some major respect. vide also flexed his skills earlier this year with the brain-bending treason EP. A four track trip into the deepest and darkest dungeons of bass music. While many have explored that direction, it’s vide’s ability to tie in enthralling and even at times, stunning soundscapes, to contrast the insane energy and enhance its impact that really stands out. Oh and let’s not forget about the wonk monster ‘trash’ that he crafted with sfam. If bass music is your shit, vide is your dog.
