When it comes to creating uplifting and impactful electronic music, few artists possess the catalog and credentials of Los Angeles-based Vindata. Originally known as a duo, Vindata is now an independent project helmed by Branden Ratcliff. His sound is fluid and ever-evolving, pulling in elements of hip-hop, R&B, house, beats and more for an undeniably dope direction. From releases on OSWLA to his debut album on Monstercat to collaborations ranging from Skrillex to Anderson .Paak, Remy Ma & Fat Joe, and the millions upon millions of streams accumulated across platforms, Vindata’s place is cemented in the industry.

With another bright year on the horizon, it is with great honour that we have Vindata coming through with an incredible new guest mix + interview. The mix is a fun-filled journey through the artist’s signature filled with bangers, rare flips, bops, and a multitude of grooves. For the interview, we discuss the importance of LA on his sound, favourite collabs, lifestyle changes, and hip-hop classics. Read the full conversation and bump the mix below.

Set the scene for the mix. What’s this the soundtrack to? What was your goal when putting it together?

I haven’t done a guest mix in a while, so I wanted to use this opportunity to highlight a typical Vindata DJ set in 2022. Just like most Vindata sets the tracks mixed blend several genres, including hip-hop/R&B, house, disco, and beats.

How essential has LA been in your journey as an artist? Do you think your career would be different if you lived somewhere else? Would you ever consider it?

LA has heavily influenced my sound. The LA rave scene introduced me to Djing. And the LA Beat Scene helped shape the Vindata sound. I think my career would’ve been slightly different if I were to grow up somewhere else. But I often fantasize about moving to another country to continue my journey.

Last summer you unveiled your debut album With Opened Eyes. What did this milestone mean for your career and to you personally? Should we expect more full-length projects from you in the future?

The album was a huge milestone for me personally. It took a lot of energy, patience, and persistence to finish. There were so many obstacles to clear before releasing it. I do see another full-length project in the future, but right now I’m having fun with singles and collaborations.

From Skrillex to Anderson .Paak, Fat Joe and Remy Ma to Wax Motif, your list of collaborations is very impressive. Is there one collaboration that really stands out to you? What makes it special?

The Anderson .Paak collaboration stands out the most to me. Just because it was so natural. I knew he was something special when I first heard his voice on a Tiron & Ayomari mixtape. He’s a super talented dude and really deserves it all.

I think some people think it’s cooler to be dark and negative, but I disagree. I think you can promote positive energy without coming off as corny.

There’s a thread of uplifting and positive energy that runs through your music. Is this something you consciously try to infuse into your work? What’s the key to creating that energy?

I like to think of myself as a positive person (generally speaking). So the key for me is just being authentic to who I am. We all have our ups and downs but I aim to inspire people in a positive way. I think some people think it’s cooler to be dark and negative, but I disagree. I think you can promote positive energy without coming off as corny.

A few months back you announced that you would be leading Vindata as a solo project. How has the new journey been treating you? Are you experiencing any unexpected challenges or benefits?

Yes, Vindata is now a solo project. The journey so far has been treating me well. Things are a little bit different, but for the most part I feel right at home.

I’d suggest meditating (even if it’s just a couple of minutes), drinking more water, getting quality sleep and exercise, spending some time with family, and getting back to nature or earth-ing.

You mentioned in a previous interview that the pandemic has helped shift your focus towards meditation, eating well, and exercise. Has the lifestyle change impacted your creative output? Any tips for creatives looking to live a healthier lifestyle?

Yes, living a more balanced and cleaner lifestyle has definitely impacted my creativity. I’d suggest meditating (even if it’s just a couple of minutes), drinking more water, getting quality sleep and exercise, spending some time with family, and getting back to nature or earth-ing.

What’s the last piece of music that deeply impacted you? What prompted the strong reaction?

Probably Nas’ new album Magic. There’s something special happening between Hit-Boy’s production and the space Nas is in right now. It’s dope.

I really admire his legacy. He’s still releasing fire music and his career stretches 30+ years.

I read that you grew up on 90’s hip-hop. What are your top 5 under-the-radar 90’s rap albums? What makes them special?

Camp Lo – Uptown Saturday Night
Digable Planets – Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space)
Q-tip – Amplified
Outkast – Aquemini
Flipmode- The Imperial

What should we expect from you in 2022?

More club records and more collaborations.

Vindata has been bringing us incredible music for over 10 years, with huge achievements under their belt like getting on Rolling Stone’s “10 New Artists You Need To Know Now” and collaborating with Skrillex. Unfortunately, on November 13, Branden Ratcliff announced he would be continuing the Vindata project alone.

Dearest fan and supporter,

It’s with mixed feelings that I announce the departure of Jared from the Vindata project. Jared has been an incredible bandmate and friend for many years. But circumstances in out lives and creative differences have made us realize that I (Branden) should move forward with the project as he explores new creative endeavors.

I’m genuinely grateful for all the dope things we did together, and I’m sure we will continue to do great things separately. I want to thank everyone for bearing with us during this transition. Let us cherish the old times but contunue to grow and press forward.

It’s a treat that we were able to see Branden perform live at the last Good Society show in Los Angeles right before the news broke. And we’re definitely grateful for is the opportunity to premiere Vindata’s first track as a solo project. But Branden actually reveals to FUXWITHIT, “This song has been an unreleased gem we’ve been playing in our sets for a while now. It’s a funky house record that just feels good. And it’s also one of the last songs Vindata worked on as a duo. Really excited to finally share it with everyone.”

‘Circa Now’ is an intoxicating house tune featuring a janky bassline, syncopated claps, and a groovy rhythm. High-pitched vocals and shouts are sampled sporadically, flowing through the track and painting a picture where you can visualize yourself grooving outside at a block party with all your friends. ‘Circa Now’ is a wonderfully catchy start to what we can expect from the newly-announced solo project, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for Vindata.

For their next event, they’re bringing the vibes to 1720 Warehouse in Los Angeles on November 4!

Super grateful to everyone who’s rocking with us to make this show happen. There’s a lot of trust being instilled in Good Society right now, as one of the newer promoters coming up in the scene, that I hope to return 10 times over.

JOSH YAMINI, FOUNDER OF GOOD SOCIETY

The record label/live event company will be throwing a show every month for the rest of the year, hoping to expand into different territories and eventually a music festival. In partnership with digital streaming service, Audius, Good Society is throwing this event with FUXWITHIT favorites like Vindata and episcool, and even our label launching artist, capshun! We’re hyped to see Lophiile throw down in person and headliner Alexander Lewis‘ throwback set. Really hoping a trap horn gets blown in my face.

“This show is sort of a hallmark for Good Society. I’m bringing together many of my favorite artists, each of whom has pioneered different corners of the same scene, and it’s all going down at 1720 which is a hub of the culture in LA. W’s all around for the team,” Founder Josh Yamini expresses. “It’ll also be one of our few shows, up until this point, hosting live instruments as Alexander Lewis showcases his signature blend of hip hop, trap, and jazz with the trombone. I’m definitely going to lose my shit when that happens haha.”

The electronic duo comprised of Branden Ratcliff and Jared Poythress was actually named in Rolling Stone’s “10 New Artists You Need To Know Now” list back in 2017 and we’ve been watching them even well before that.

Now, Vindata is back with a new lush house tune called ‘Let It Go’ via Lowly Palace. The track brings you to a much calmer alternate universe. A reality definitely separate from what we’re living in now. The fun, bouncy beat pilots you through the song as a comforting chant of, “let it go” is sung periodically throughout. In a time of tension, ‘Let It Go’ nudges us to surrender our struggles for a moment and embrace life.

Book-ending his summer with the release of ‘Feeling Forever’ and re-release of ‘Run Wild’ in June, and now the release of the remix EP for these songs just 2 months later, PLS&TY has been steadily pushing his positive sonic vibrations. Accompanied by an incredibly talented team of contributing producers like Luca Lush, Ducky, YehMe2, and Vindata to name a few, this remix pack is loaded with expertly executed fresh takes that compliment and expand upon the originals.

The two newest prototypes of ‘Feeling Forever’, crafted by Bondax and Vindata, take two very different paths with the direction of the piece. Bondax stays more true to the original vibe of the song, keeping everything very mellow and emotional with the addition of tranquil elements to the melody. Vindata turns the song on its head and throws in extremely trappy drops that will make you get low.

‘Run Wild’ seemed to be a crowd favorite, garnering 4 piping hot remixes. Ducky’s is an absolute slapper, with a hard hitting under layer that could be a drop all on its own, but then an insane synth and extra drums are added making you lose all recognition of reality. Manic Focus chops up the vocals into a hip-hop-esque vibe that makes it much more dancey and uptempo in his rendition. YehMe2 showcases his heavier side with a remix that borders on dubstep, with quick switch ups and thick wubby segments. The last drop has ridiculous drawn-out notes that would turn even Medusa to stone. Luca Lush rounds out the pack with a psytrance remix that easily gives it the most unique vibe of the group.

The Run Wild / Feeling Forever Remix EP has a little bit of everything, from midtempo, to dubstep, to trance, and funky hip-hop. No matter your mood or tastes, you’ll find a track to fit what ever silence you’re seeking to fill.

This past Saturday was a night that defied expectations several times over. The event was Anna Lunoe’s HYPERHOUSE tour, which saw her touching down at The Hoxton along with DJ Sliink and Vindata. When I saw the line-up I knew I had to be there. I’ve been waiting to see Sliink since 2012, enjoy Vindata and kept hearing about Anna Lunoe. I expected Sliink to murder it, and for the other two to be good, but I greatly undervalued the talent of Vindata and Anna Lunoe. The whole night was incredible from beginning to end. Here’s how it all went down.

Vindata – Shot By Will Selviz

Vindata – Shot By Will Selviz

I got in just before 11 and the crowd was still pretty sparse. The mood was laid-back as people socialized and grabbed drinks while Local DJ/Producer Cosella was warming things up with some deep bass. As Vindata took the stage it seemed the venue instantly grew more packed. The spead out crowd was magnetized to the front of the room. As I moved closer, I warned my brother that their set may be a bit slow for his tastes (I turned out to be very wrong). I’m a casual Vindata fan and expected a mixture of chill trap and future bass. What they delivered was well beyond my expectations in both quality and energy. Yeah, they played some future bass, most notably their Mija collab ‘Better’ (which killed), but they took it so much further. From mashing Green Day into Moombahton, to ‘Ni**as In Paris’ into flute-ridden trap and Mr. Carmack. They started slow, pulling the crowd in and had it in full party mode shortly after. A ‘Panda’ x ‘Purple Lamborghini’ mash-up went off and they even had us crankin’ that Soldier Boy. Midway through the set Anna Lunoe popped up to show some love, and as their set neared it’s end, Sliink came through with some shots of Henny to celebrate with the duo and warm himself up. The scene was a great display of camaraderie and love between the DJs that only made it feel like more of an inclusive party for all.

As Sliink took over the decks, he let everyone know where he’s from with ‘Nwxrk’ (Jersey!), the beautiful build and vocals gave way to the rawness of A$AP Ferg’s ‘Work’ and it was on. Sliink showed love to OWSLA boss Skrillex with his classic ‘Cinema’ flip and fellow label mate Yogi with ‘Burial’. With flips of ‘Hotline Bling’ and ‘Show Me Love’ Sliink proved that there’s a Jersey remix for everything. When I heard Ma$e come in for ‘Mo Money, Mo Problems’ it was a wrap. It’s not often you here Ma$e and Skrillex in the same set, but I assure you it’s something special. I went into this set expecting Sliink to kill it, and that’s exactly what he did. Lunoe came out once more to party with Sliink before it was her time to take over.

Anna Lunoe Stance – Shot by Will Selviz

I have a confession. I’ve been sleeping on Anna Lunoe. She’s been on my radar as someone I need to check out and dive into, but I’ve never took the time. That said, I went into her set expecting to see a pretty good house set that would leave me satisfied. What I got instead was straight up fucking wow’d. Anna Lunoe is incredible. From her selection, to her mixing and her energy, she’s everything that makes a DJ great. She bounced across genres as effortlessly as she did the stage. Moving from O.T. Genesis to Gesaffelstein, ‘I Love Kanye’ into rave house and classic Prodigy into Getter x Ghastly. She kept the filthy club vibe from Sliink going for some time and even dropped some Athletixx. She brought in some classic breakbeats before dropping them into some crazy new shit. She proved she can play anything with ease and without losing the crowd for a second. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any more crazy, Hunter Siegel and Autoerotique rolled up for an impromptu b2b with Lunoe. This just added to the ill house party feel that engulfed the night. When the lights finally came on and the music stopped there was no way to feel other than wow’d. HYPERHOUSE was one hell of night.

Regulators just released a dope edit of Vindata ft. Kenzie May – All I Really Need. It is the first “Regulated Edition” that they’ve released, with more to come in the near future. The song begins with the melodic chill sound of the original before kicking it up a notch with some heavy drums and chopped vocal samples. They’ve been describing the track as “Feelz” which seems quite fitting. This is definitely a different direction from the trap bangers they’ve come to be known for (see Chambers & Upper Echelon Remix) but I welcome their exploration of new sounds. After all, their collaboration with Sane Beats on Tipping Point was pretty stellar. I look forward to what they have to come and will definitely will be on the look out for more Regulated Editions. Stream & Free Download below. Let us know if you’re feeling the new vibes in the comments.
