Since mid-September, Vorso has been unveiling weekly singles from his upcoming album titled Holonomy. Through these ten singles, which cover only half of the length of the album, the multi-talented artist has showcased his masterful ability to weave through various genres with ease, sometimes staying true to his trusted drum and bass sound while also demonstrating a knack for all walks of bass music. Take ‘Power Through / Facets’ for example, where Vorso emanates a lively house/garage touch that is mostly new to fans of the artist. However, any fan of Vorso knows that his keen attention to detail and sound design wizardry are sure to slap no matter the style he decides to explore.

It only makes sense that this epic body of work is released via Inspected, marking the label’s 50th release. The relationship between Inspected and Vorso, which dates back to 2017, is one of mutual respect and shared artistic vision. Inspected has provided Vorso with a platform to showcase his ever-growing artistic vision, while Vorso’s limitless creativity and technical excellence have aligned perfectly with their commitment to nurturing exceptional talent. The release of Holonomy is but a match made in heaven.

In anticipation of the album’s release on October 18th, we have the extreme pleasure of premiering ‘Weirdzone’ today. True to its title, ‘Weirdzone’ is peculiar in a hypnotizing way, changing tones midway through yet keeping you hooked with its quirks. The first minute of the track is upbeat and groovy, as Vorso uses fun effects and textures to keep listeners bopping. After that section, the soundscape of the track becomes more eerie and sinister, almost as if one entered this hypothetical weirdzone. Rugged synths and heavy bass take over, as Vorso creates an atmosphere tailored to the upcoming spooky season.

Don’t miss ‘Weirdzone’ below and be sure to catch Holonomy out in full on October 18th

It’s wild to think that it has been more than two years since we linked up with COPYCATT for a guest mix and interview. Since then, the skilled beatmaker went on a release spree with a Madlib bootleg, the wicked Trash EP, and a few more incredible cuts, before dropping into relative silence once more. While 2022 was quiet on the release front, 2023 comes with a glimmer of promise as the artist returns to Inspected with a remix for an Inspected favourite: Vorso.

‘Wannabe’ is a quintessential Vorso track that fans immediately recognize upon hearing it. COPYCATT”s treatment of it is exactly what fans have come to love from the artist. Together, Vorso and COPYCATT’s names on a single track seems like perfection. About that, COPYCATT states, “I met Tom back in like 2015 when we were both using different monikers. We all used to chat in forums and comment on each other’s Soundcloud tracks, so in a digital kinda way it feels like we came from the same hood. I think we mutually enjoyed each other’s music even back then so it feels pretty wholesome to share a release with both of our names on it some 8 years later.”

COPYCATT keeps the allure of the original intact throughout the introduction, modifying it enough to be recognized as a new rendition but not too much to completely erase its origins. The talented producer quickly adds his own flair to the piece, before the drop hits and listeners are taken on a halftime journey. Typical with COPYCATT productions, the ‘Wannabe’ remix carries an aggressive swagger that flows well due to its hip-hop influence, punching harder with every passing bar but never becoming overbearing.

The glimmer of hope is also complemented by COPYCATT’s return to America. Until then, dive into his remix of ‘Wannabe’ below.

From boundary-pushing compilations, to projects from veterans and up-and-coming talents alike, there isn’t much that Halcyon does that isn’t worthy of praise. Despite first branding themselves as a platform for future riddim, the Oolacile-run platform has continuously expanded upon their range of styles and influences with the common theme of supporting quality bass music. Staying true to this mentality, Halcyon return today with another forward-thinking compilation titled Cerebrum Vol. I in collaboration with NEO4IC to pair music with fashion unlike anything out right now.

Bringing new and familiar faces to the table, Cerebrum Vol. I showcases artists such as Oolacile, BVSSIC and Vayre, all artists who have released full length projects on the label. New to Halcyon, though, include Inspected-regular Vorso, active electronic music community member Mr. Bill and newcomer lalanoi, among others. Additional contributors include Focus Five features phonon, Trinist and Alydian and FUXWITHIT favourite, Saka. Comprised of nine mind-melting tracks ranging from drum and bass to glitch hop, Cerebrum Vol. I brings a stacked lineup with top-tier tracks from start to finish.

Opening up the compilation in epic fashion, Oolacile, phonon and Mr. Bill join forces to create a tumultuous journey in ‘Exodus,’ as the piece meshes each artist’s style to perfection. BVSSIC and Staysick follow with the brute that is ‘Supervision,’ showcasing a keen attention to detail, core-shattering bass and a pristine balance of highs and lows. Wasting no time, Vorso comes next in a masterclass of sound design in the wicked ‘Honx,’ which may or may not be a follow-up to his recent beast boasting a similar name. Saka keeps the energy alive with a halftime heater that contends for one of his best tunes to date, with ‘Souffle’ flexing an swagger-filled flow and an oddly satisfying groove throughout. ‘Recondite’ follows, as Trinist unleashes a barrage of relentless bass in his 170 BPM neurofunk belter that further builds on his ever-impressive signature sound.

Coming off his Spectramorph EP from earlier this year, Vayre shares a display of colourful melodies and rugged basslines with the next contribution to the well-rounded compilation. Then, Alydian evokes raw emotions with ‘Kurota,’ demonstrating his incredible ability to use contorted vocals, deep basses and rhythmic percussion to induce the deepest chills within your spine. Staysys and lalanoi close out the compilation with ‘Bovel & Buwar’ and ‘luminous flux,’ respectively, with both producers embodying the essence of innovation in their tracks.

It’s difficult to do such an impressive compilation justice with words, so we highly recommend multiple listens from front to back – you won’t regret it. Don’t miss Cerebrum Vol. I below.

Not infrequently I find myself thinking how cool it would be to have soundtracks designed specifically for books. Not just background music, but something tailor-made for what you’re actually reading. Imagine being immersed in the pages of a compelling novel and having music in your ears that follows word by word, chapter by chapter, the unfolding of the storyline. If this seems a bit exaggerated to you, then think about how cool it would be to find QR codes in certain points of the book that would lead you to music able to emphasize that particular passage.

Okay, maybe I better stop daydreaming! As long as all this remains in my imagination, I have to do it myself and manually find tracks that match what I read. An arduous challenge you’d think? I have to admit, not so much, especially when the right song literally falls out of the sky. For example, I’m now dealing with a rereading of Homer’s Odyssey and, almost moved by divine will, this brand new opus by Vorso and RefraQ has landed in my dms. Against all odds, it turned out to be a perfect combination. If for some strange reason you are not familiar with the epic poem, to keep it simple, you have to know that it is a long story of travel, exploration and continuous discovery. Likewise, ‘Biomes’ offers us a whole new world to explore. In some sections, you run into labyrinthine, complex, intricate soundscapes. In others, you find serene and touching atmospheres. Whether you prefer one or the other, RefraQ and Vorso give us only genuine emotions which become more vivid with each listen. This track has a life of its own. It comes from outer space and cannot be compared to a good ninety percent of the music I normally listen to. Now that I think about it, isn’t this the definition of a masterpiece?

‘Biomes’ is out on Inspected and you can stream in below or on your favorite platform here.

The musical spectrum is fully covered in Others Remixed and the final product hits all the right spots. Are you looking for mean, in-your-face drum and bass that will shatter you to your core? Vorso and Phace have got you covered. Into something lighter but still packed with energy and complexity? Mr. Bill and Dexcell deliver. Ekcle do what they do best in their edition of ‘Inside,’ crafting grandiose soundscapes and intricate progressions to leave listeners puzzled yet amazed.

Oolacile‘s Automaton EP was one of 2019’s most underrated dubstep projects. A quality showcase of the talented producer’s unique signature sound, Automaton featured four innovative tracks that allowed Oolacile to continue to carve his own path in the bass scene. When word broke out of a remix pack for the project, fans were itching in anticipation for its full release and track list. As the remixes slowly began to appear on SoundCloud over the course of the last week, it was evident that Automaton RE:Automated was going to be both heavy and extremely entertaining.

Perhaps the biggest surprise to the track list was Laxcity, an artist not typically seen in the bass realm but always able to hold his ground and let his undeniable talent and work ethic speak for itself. With his take on ‘Divisions,’ Laxcity does just that, transforming Oolacile’s energetic original into a moving future bass bop. Another impressive surprise is Aweminus‘ bass house take on the same track, further displaying his versatility and innovation in genres that often stagnate. Fans of heavier dubstep will love Oolacile’s ‘Neurons VIP,’ Digitist and Neonix‘s remix of ‘Dauntless,’ Akeos and Jub‘s gruelling take on ‘Machina’ and Subfiltronik‘s ferocious ‘Otto’ remix. Frequent collaborators Clockvice and Vorso also deliver an intense version of ‘Dauntless’ while Mr. Bill closes out the diverse project with a soothing yet complex ‘Otto’ flip.

Automaton RE:Automated is direct proof of both Oolacile and his friends’ true talents. Don’t miss it below.
