‘back it up’ is a beautiful and wonky time. The fat bass designs accompanying the everlasting percussion leads create a delicious sound dessert. Making every second sweet and memorable. And including a vocal sample honoring the title makes it come around full circle in the best way possible. You can easily hear the evolution in his production quality. Working harder with every release, he’s for sure making a true name for himself in the underground. But once the second drop comes in, it’s no joke. The violent and addicting waviness of the lead captivates the audience and makes them one with his thinking. Ending us off with a tucked percussion pattern to keep the song fresh.

The track opens up with a beautiful set of airy synths along with a nice organic drum pattern in the form of a buildup. Right after, he introduces himself with his classic deep and heavy bass design. The grimey and distorted 808 will completely knock your socks off. He even includes the ‘Wayback’ vocal sample to complement the rhythm that much more.

The second chorus changes up with a slower but impactful rhythm that leaves that same vocal sample as the main attraction. Between every section lies that same kind of vibe and feeling as we heard in the introduction with that luscious pad. To wrap it all up, he really plays around with that bass design to create a fast and shooting effect during the finale . It’ll leave you wanting much more.

‘Lambo’ begins with this long drawn out intro full of these off-the-wall ambient synths and risers, which immediately leads into a section where we’re introduced to these deep lead basses, coupled with these synoptic hip-hop vocal samples. After a quick drum build, that pristine lead bass from the last section takes over in the drop, along with some creative sample selections to fill in the breaks. ‘Lambo’ is a track that refuses to stay still and continues to evolve until the last second.

We had the pleasure of catching up with wasterurself himself (no pun intended) and got to pick his brain on where the inspiration behind this record came from.

“I’ve been listening to a lot of underground rappers on SoundCloud lately. I wanted to adopt their vibe into my style. That definitely influenced my sample selection and the structure of the track. I wanted this track to be built differently but have it still be distinctively me.”

To say we’re interested in what’s next for the rising beatmaker is an understatement. Thankfully, we’re able to get a sneak peek of what’s to come for wasteurself.

“I’m going to continue drop songs that push the envelope every month for the foreseeable future. Expect more collaborations with artists & labels that I consider to be the backbone of the underground. Some collabs that are coming soon are with raucous, tada, ion, and more with labels. This year I’m going to become a solid representative for the underground trap scene.”

‘Jigsaw’ is a deep, ever-evolving cut that offers a laid-back groove paired with wild, wonky basses that truly give this song its breath. In a work such as this, it’s always intriguing to know the point of origin, and GURF reflected, “The three way collab happened thanks to wasteurself. honestly! He sends me a lot of music and we’ve been trying to start a collab for a while so when I heard this particular project the groove really got to me! THEN RAFTYR came on board and jacked the last part up to 1000.” Gurf isn’t lying when he says RAFTYR jacked up the end, the last drop surely brings the energy up with the hardest section in the whole track.

‘Jigsaw’ is a great introduction to the Sub Terranean Sounds compilation, but there’s more to come. Featuring artists like yojas., bd hbt, POINT CLAIRE, XTALS, and more, Gurf let’s us know, ‘I can say that this is going to be a murky, grimey tape that is going to be perfect for spoopy szn >:)”.

‘Forty’ begins with a deep, rumbling bass and a looping vocal chant that quickly builds intensity and descends into an absolutely intoxicating wobbly lead that bounces along the track. wasteurself. really flexes his sound design skills in the second drop; using frog sounds and more, wasteurself. truly thought outside of the box to deliver an immensely deep track. The amount of swing that wasteurself. is able to apply in this track would make just about anybody loose control of their limbs and act if they had several Forty’s.
