Today’s guest mix features a man of many hats… Producer, DJ, and mastering engineer extraordinaire, Aeded is a powerhouse brimming with musical talent. With a penchant for meticulous percussion and fast DJing, he has garnered attention from the likes of VALE, WONK#AY! Records, Erie Sounds, and Wavecraft Collective, among others. As an avid connoisseur of music in all its shapes and forms, Aeded finds inspiration from every which way, resulting in some incredibly refined track curation in his sets. I cannot understate that this man is a wizard in the DAW; every track he releases is a flex of technical know-how, the result of countless hours of diligent perfection-seeking. On stage, his USB for any given performance is a vault of lethal dancefloor weapons that are sure to get feet moving and hearts racing. It should come as no surprise, then, that I’m thrilled to have him on for this week’s interview and mix, so let’s get to it!

We’re hyped to have you for this week’s guest mix! What sort of journey are our listeners in for with this one?

Thank you so much for having me! Listeners can expect a variety of breaks, garage, drum & bass, some jungle, and even some bits of softer pop music and electronica sprinkled throughout. I really focused on connecting the often opposing worlds of pop music and underground dance/bass music. It’s a sound I’ve been trying to hone lately

I treated this as a sort of “influences mix”, like the ones I used to listen to on Inspected‘s SoundCloud back in the day. I’ve always loved diving into my favorite artist’s influences, so I thought I’d leave a little mark here in case somebody’s curious.

Not to mention, there are pleeeenty of unreleased bits from me and some of my friends!

What’s your musical background like? Are you primarily self-taught?

When I was 10 years old I picked up the drums! I don’t play much anymore, but I often miss it. My parents enrolled me in drum lessons at the time, which I did for about 3 years until I moved on due to loss of interest.

I picked up electronic music production around when I was 14. I started making future bass, progressive house, and downtempo type songs for fun. I’ve evolved a lot stylistically over the past decade, favoring breakbeats and drum & bass these days.

Since starting, I’ve enrolled in programs like ill.Gates‘ Producer Dojo and went to a small recording & sound tech school in Gettysburg (AMP). Other than that, I’ve been pretty self-taught through YouTube tutorials and the general sharing of knowledge amongst my friends and favorite producers.

You’ve now had two tracks (‘Funny Bunny‘ and ‘Traffic Jam‘) featured on VISION Radio. How did it feel hearing your name get a shoutout from someone as prestigious as the NOISIA crew? Any idea how they first heard your music?

It’s really cool having my stuff supported by them, and I couldn’t be more grateful Noisia was my first “real” deep dive into drum & bass, and I consider all three of them to be at the absolute top of their craft. Bar none.

Big thanks to Dave Columbo Jenkins and Posij as well! I hope they all realize the sheer impact their show has on the bass music community. I noticed a huge uptick in the interest of my project after “Funny Bunny” got played a couple times, which felt really validating.

I find it less stressful and time consuming to work on other people’s tunes, mostly because of the ego factor that it’s not so closely connected and representative of me.

It seems a lot of your time goes to mixing and mastering, both for your own tracks and for others. Do you find it easier or more difficult to master tracks other people have written versus your own?

I believe a lot of the beauty of having somebody else mix and/or master your tracks is that you can offload that last 5% of creation onto somebody else. That last 5% is often brutal. If you know, you know lol.

I find it less stressful and time-consuming to work on other people’s tunes, mostly because of the ego factor that it’s not so closely connected and representative of me. When I’m mastering my own tracks, I find that I’m so wrapped up in it all that I can’t “objectively” critique the track. It’s basically impossible, and I almost never end up 100% happy with it.

Despite being a working mastering engineer, I’ve started offloading my mastering elsewhere since working with WONK#AY! on the Singularity 02 release. Seppa mastered that one! It’s so freeing, and the last part of the production process goes so much quicker when I’m able to work with somebody else on it.

Art is never finished, only abandoned

Mixing and mastering can be quite the rabbit-hole of endless tweaks and fixes if you don’t know when to stop. How do you decide when a track is finally complete and ready to share with the world?

“Art is never finished, only abandoned”

I try my best to “abandon” tunes right before I start to get exhausted and jaded with them. It’s a struggle I’m still trying to navigate at the moment.

What’s the most “I can’t live without this” piece of software or plug-in you use regularly?

Boring answer, but Fabfilter Pro-Q 4 is a beast of an EQ. It’s everywhere in my projects The more interesting answer might be Phase Plant. It can do literally anything except (at the time of this interview) spectral/additive synthesis. It’s used on a majority of my tracks, and is my “swiss army synth”. Serum 2 is slowly starting to overtake it for me, though.

Some hidden gems I really love are Melda’s plugins, but more specifically MSpectralDynamics. I have so much fun tweaking with that one in sound design sessions. It even has some neat mastering applications!

Do you have any big plans for this year that you’re able to share with us? Any special live bookings, releases, etc.?

Nothing is set-in-stone in terms of releases, but I have a lot of 80-90% finished material right now. Hoping to get another AEDFM all-original mix out soon + figure out what future projects are gonna look like. I’m always thrilled to be exploring new territory with my sound, and I’ll continue to do that as I have been since my project’s inception!!

I love the nerdy/techy obsessions that come from being in the studio. I love the connection to people I get from sharing music through DJing.

What’s your happy place and why: DJing on a stage or producing in the studio?

I’m more of a studio guy, but I definitely enjoy DJing a lot. I love the nerdy/techy obsessions that come from being in the studio. I love the connection to people I get from sharing music through DJing. It’s almost difficult for me to choose which one I enjoy more, but I find myself thinking about studio activities a lot more than DJing.

What inspired the name “Aeded?”

Aeded

Do you have any notable hobbies outside of music? Where does your free time go?

A lot of my free time tends to go toward health, wellness, and my relationships with people. I’m an avid gym-goer, enjoy gaming with friends here and there, and I like to learn more about myself / my relationship to everything through activities like meditation and journaling. Cooking is also fun despite mostly being a chore, I do a couple times a week lol.

What’s one piece of advice you’d like to give to aspiring producers?

Create something every single day. No exceptions, no matter what happens. Doesn’t need to be a full song, can be a single kick sample for all I care. As long as I make something every day, I am making progress and staying healthy/happy

Today’s guest mix is a wild ride from Columbus-based producer Subtle. I often find myself writing about minimalist producers but today is a different foray into gritty, grungy beats inspired by drum and bass and hip-hop. Perhaps the best word for his style is “crunchy,” a la Noisia or tsuruda. With support from Wavecraft Collective, WTF’s That Sound, and Conscious Electronic (among others), Subtle has been steadily making waves in the Great Lakes region for the last five years as his popularity continues to grow.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Subtle in person. Trust me when I say that he’s a real treat with a deep passion for his music. It’s always neat to see someone from your area start to blow up and he’s showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Be sure to check him out live if you’re able, and now let’s hear what he has to say!

What’s your musical background like? Are you classically-trained or self-taught?

I’m self-taught mainly. In college, I was going to school for business. I started producing first and then DJing shortly after. Prior to that, I tried to rap in high school. It wasn’t any good, but I got experience with programs like audacity and was always a huge fan of hip-hop before getting into electronic music. Lots of hours on YouTube and a short run in the producer dojo during my first year of college. During that time I dropped out of school and continued to produce while I got involved with the local scene of Columbus, OH.

How did you decide on your producer name?

Subtle is kind of a description and contradiction of the art I create. While I love for my art to be thoughtful meticulous, and discrete. I love huge abrasive sounds that smack listeners in the face and fit when they sometimes shouldn’t. Precision, beauty and chaos.

While I love for my art to be thoughtful meticulous, and discrete. I love huge abrasive sounds that smack listeners in the face and fit when they sometimes shouldn’t.

I don’t think we often get to speak with producers from the Great Lakes region as it seems a lot of producers prefer to move to LA, Denver, NYC, etc. How do you feel about the scene around your area and its prospects for the future?

The Midwest doesn’t get that much love, but here in Columbus, Ohio we have a really dope community with groups like Sidestage Collective, Re:Charge, and many more putting on sick events every week. As Columbus grows, I see the music scene here prospering and only going up with it along with events like Lost Lands, and Secret Dreams doing wonders for our local scene.

Where does your free time go outside of music?

I work a day job, and try to stay as active as possible since many hours are spent in front of a computer. I like to spend as much time with my family as possible since we all live busy lives. Always played a lot of video games. Right now I play a lot of Valorant, but honestly I suck lmaoo. Will always be an Old School Runescape stan.

Do you prefer to freestyle your live sets or plan them out?

I typically plan sets out, but with room for improv. I love starting with a dark and eerie vibe and building anticipation and tension by raising the tempo throughout the set. There’s a certain sound of course that I like to keep, while hitting various music styles that have similar, but intricate harmonics and sound selection.

Who are some underground producers you think we should be listening to?

Aeded, and Pipe Leak are two Columbus based producers who I think are criminally underrated. Both are incredibly talented musicians. I also would be remiss not to mention everyone on the Wavecraft team which is a long list of insane tastemakers that deserve all the recognition in the world.

What’s your favorite track that you’ve ever released?

Easily ‘Watch This’ with my good friend Lavier. The track ended up doing so well, and created memories with a homie that I’ll never forget.

Tell us how you got involved with Wavecraft Collective.

Before joining the roster, I was a huge fan of them and artists involved like Fryar, and Houman. I had the opportunity of releasing my first EP with them just a few months prior to them taking on a new team of artists and just like that at the right place at the right time.

Any big plans in the works as far as new releases, festivals, etc.?

Definitely. I had to take a big hiatus due to health problems the last two years. Recently, I played support with Visages in my hometown which was so sick. I’m hoping to lock in and hit 2025 hard, releasing consistently and finishing some projects I have in the works. As for the next time someone can see me perform you can catch me at Building 6 in Detroit, MI December 14th playing support for Barclay Crenshaw.

I wasn’t really sure where my new roads were going to lead, but I know that’s for me to decide and I just want to put out music to the world and see where it leads while taking care of myself so I can be there for the people in my life.

Piggy-backing off the last question, where do you see yourself in five years?

Like I mentioned, the health issues were pretty scary at first. So I wasn’t really sure where my new roads were going to lead, but I know that’s for me to decide and I just want to put out music to the world and see where it leads while taking care of myself so I can be there for the people in my life.

If you could collab with any name of your choosing, who would it be?

ANY??? I don’t think I could choose one so I’ll give you three. Chee, The Caracal Project, and Imanu.
These three artists have been such a huge inspiration to my project and taste in music. All 3 provide such complex story writing within their composition it’s honestly incredible.

In an oversaturated market of cookie-cutter bass producers, we find a diamond in the rough with Chef Boyarbeatz. The Los Angeles-based beatmaker has continued to differentiate himself, bringing his fresh perspective on the genre through his omnifarious, worldly sound influences. For his newest release, Chef Boyarbeatz drops ‘Professional Fuckup’ on East Coast underground bass label, Wavecraft Collective.

In ‘Professional Fuckup,’ the producer amalgamates future garage and 140 into one cohesive and unique bass tune that still sounds like classic Chef B. And while both of these genres have been making their way into the mainstream in recent months, he actually started the track around two years ago, finishing it up back in February 2020. “I wrote ‘Professional Fuckup’ after a failed relationship and was feeling all the emotions of fucking things up over and over. I tried to incorporate that nostalgic vibe with my classic bassline and breaks,” he tells FUXWITHIT.

Starting with a soft and staticy percussive build, Chef Boyarbeatz utilizes the drums to create tension and make way for evocative, atmospheric keys. The claviers foreshadow the first dynamic garage drop only to develop harmoniously into the track’s 140 portion. A vocal sample breaks it up, leading way to Chef’s signature bass sound from 2:20 to completion.

When you delve into the artist’s discography, you’ll come to find that the bopsmith always finds ways to evolve his sound. And ‘Professional Fuckup’ is a prime example of just what he can do in only a little over 4 minutes. Listen to it below and see if he’ll be in a city near you soon by following him on socials.

A specialist at crafting complex, dark, grainy low-frequency soundscapes Houston Harrelson brilliantly weaves enigmatic basslines with hip-hop roots performing and producing under the alias HOUMAN. Precisely-timed clefts between plunges of gritty bass, inventive fills, and puzzling melodies, as depicted in originals such as ‘Crossed’ or ‘Daewoo,’ demonstrate Harrelson’s ability to build a vivid depth and suspense within each release. In contrast, an ever-expanding cache of remixes, such as Denzel Curry’s ‘CLOUT CO13A1N’ and J. Cole’s ‘KOD,’ showcase a seamless blending of HOUMAN’s granular synth-work with the familiarity of hip-hop vocals.

It was a real treat to connect with HOUMAN to discuss creativity, Wavecraft Collective, his latest Psyche EP, as well as what is still to come during the remainder of 2020. Take a look at the full interview & guest mix with HOUMAN, out now below!

Where did you initially grow up and where are you currently residing?

I am originally from South Carolina but have spent the past few years in Asheville, North Carolina. It’s a pretty cool city that is home to both Moog and Make Noise, which are two of the most popular synth companies in the world. You can find me in one of their showrooms at least once a week tinkering.

I am a firm believer in the idea that theory and rules can only take you so far – In the end, it comes down to the question ‘Does it sound good?’

To what extent are your musical capabilities self-taught as opposed to classically learned?

Almost everything I know about production and music theory is self-taught, with the exception of some close friends who have bestowed wisdom over the years and a few sleepless nights watching YouTube tutorials. I am a firm believer in the idea that theory and rules can only take you so far – In the end, it comes down to the question ‘Does it sound good?’

When do you typically feel the most inspired or inclined to create?

Usually, I like to have a whole day to create. I find my most prosperous sessions come from days that I wake up and hop into the studio with no other obligations. Often times I spend the early part of my sessions trying to create solid ideas/loops and not worrying about technicality as much. I find that when you save those practices for later in the process you are more capable of fleshing the idea itself out.

What role has the Wavecraft Collective played in helping to shape and support your career as a producer?

WC has played a huge role in shaping where I am today in music. Some of my first releases were with them and the support has always been through the roof! Not to mention most of the team over there were my best friends back home. Be on the lookout for a release or two with them in 2020!

We are not static. The spectrum that our minds inhabit is broad and ever-changing — a concept I feel is present throughout the project.

You remarked that your latest EP Psyche drew inspiration from patterns of the mind, such as human nature. How did you expand upon these ideas in order to build the visual and audio components of the project?

‘Psyche’ was probably the most fun I’ve had piecing together a project. One of my main objectives when composing those tunes, which all came together over the course of last year, was using each track to represent a totally different emotion/mindset. I thought that was the best way to depict human nature. We are not static. The spectrum that our minds inhabit is broad and ever-changing — a concept I feel is present throughout the project.

Your discography is composed of a rather solid combination of self-released tracks and collaborations as well as an assortment of remixes, flips, and edits. How do you compare and contrast your mentality when working between the two?

I’ve made it a point to try and create a wide assortment of content/releases. Often times the remixes or edits start as just a note on my phone. I find making these types of beats provide an environment with less stress and often times do it when I am in a rut creatively. Some of them end up solid enough that I feel others should hear. Countless others get trashed! When you compare that to putting a project together, there’s a lot less planning involved. Plus, everybody loves a good remix.

You recently teased a forthcoming remix for an EarthGang track and stated it as being one of your favorite remixes to date. What made this one so special, and when can we expect to get a full look at the tune?

The full release will be available later this month [2/28]. This edit came together so quickly and my original plan was to just use it in my live sets, but after teasing the track alongside a few others on a social media poll the interest I received confirmed that I had to finish and release it. I love the energy of the tune and there was enough space in the original that I felt I could add my touch while remaining true. Listeners may hear a sneak peek of it if they stay until the end of the guest mix.

One of my main focuses of this upcoming year is the build more of a community around my music.

What goals have you set out to achieve over the course of the next year, and what can fans look forward to seeing or hearing from you as 2020 continues to unfold?

I have a few songs for my next project started, alongside multiple singles coming within the next few months both on labels and my personal page. One of my main focuses of this upcoming year is the build more of a community around my music. I feel like oftentimes rising producers reach when, in reality, we are more capable than ever of growing and maintaining a true fan base without any outside influence. This is not to say help is unnecessary or even unwarranted, but self-reliance will always be a priority of mine.

Where are you taking listeners with this mix?

This mix is a combination of my most recent EP, multiple unreleased IDs, and tracks I’ve been playing out at shows lately. Listeners will also hear many of my collaborations with my good friend Fryar – including a tune that premiered here on FUXWITIT late last year. There is a healthy dose of rap/hip-hop mixed with some halftime ringers. The energy remains at a high level for most of the session which is what can be expected from most of my live sets also. Near the end of the mix I included some mashups I have never played out and, as stated earlier, an early preview of the EarthGang remix I have prepared for my next release.

Thank you guys so much for listening!
