When it comes to Aussie electronic music exports, few are finer than What So Not & Slumberjack. Both emerged on the scene almost a decade ago when electronic trap was at its peak in popularity. While their styles evolved over the years, its seems they haven’t forgotten their roots with the release of a masterful trap anthem entitled ‘Uh Uh.’ The single is everything we’ve been missing (and are finally starting to see re-emerge). Infectious vocal chops and uplifting chants give the track swells of emotion and humanize it without the need for a topline or hook. The chords are off-kilter and adventurous. There are swords clashing. The percussion pounds, driving the entire track. There’s an underlying tribal influence that provides a rich cinematic aesthetic. ‘Uh Uh’ sees the veteran producers’ styles collide for a banger that is near perfect. This is what the world needs more of in 2023.

Morgan (& later 1/2 Slumberjack; Fletcher, stranded in Sydney) & I went about channeling our inner 2012; giant characterised drums, chopped & bent vocal cuts & some emotional & wonky chords. We pretty much had the whole thing done in one afternoon & here is what it sounds like! – What So Not

What So Not recently showed us his easy-going approach to life in our latest episode of Do You FUXWITHIT? What surprised us the most was the fact that there really isn’t that much that the established artist doesn’t enjoy. That is likely the mentality that has allowed the Australian artist to thrive in an industry where artists sometimes pigeonhole themselves to a single genre or sound. What So Not is a master of experimentation, and this open-mindedness knows no limits. The 2018 album Not All The Beautiful Things solidified the creative among the elite in terms of versatility across genres, and he has since continued to evolve in countless ways.

Today, What So Not unveils the next chapter to his album journey – an eleven track epic that has been three years in the making titled Anomaly. The project displays a maturation of the artist’s abilities and his approach to making music, stating “I don’t care what the streams reflect, awards or accolades, I have no doubt this is the best music I’ve ever made. NO DOUBT.” What So Not is all about authenticity and that runs rampant in Anomaly. Featuring collaborations with the likes of Oliver Tree, Louis The Child, Body Ocean, and many more, What So Not once again showcases his talents in working with vocalists and producers alike, meshing various styles and letting all contributors shine in their own right. Among the standouts include a euphoric, emotion-driven future bass bop titled ‘Black Shadow’ which sees the recently-elusive Enschway make a statement of a return, and the unexpected collaboration with ZOID LAND, Phi11a and Tek Genesis that balances crisp production and snappy vocals.

No matter your favourite genre, Anomaly is sure to include at least one track most casual listeners will enjoy, and a handful of cuts worthy of playing on repeat for others. Don’t miss it below.

The unveiling of IMANU‘s debut album is in full swing. Announced with the release of the incredible third single ‘Temper‘ which followed ‘It’s Our Destiny‘ and ‘Somehow We Lost It All,’ UNFOLD marks a new chapter in the artist’s musical journey. Despite coming onto the scene as a drum and bass artist and retaining that sound in some of his more recent works, IMANU has grown into a multi-talented producer, and he is finally getting the recognition he deserves across the electronic music scene. From obtaining his US Visa to making his way across the States and Europe this summer, IMANU is slowly taking the world by force, and he’s doing so with a sound that, along with his harder works, blurs the lines between future bass, house, and pop.

The latest contribution to UNFOLD comes via Deadbeats in the form of a surprise collaboration with What So Not and vocalist Wingtip. It’s a surprise in two ways, both because there were no hints of such a massive collaboration in the works, and because of the final product. There is no question that both producers are able to create festival-ready bangers, but ‘Pillow Talk’ is not that. Instead, the artists have decided to concoct a mellow, vocal-driven ballad that beautifully highlights Wingtip’s voice while creating a crisp soundscape to complement. ‘Pillow Talk’ has the distinct IMANU house sound that he has perfected over the last couple of years, with What So Not and Wingtip lending a welcome hand in their respective ways. The track shows yet another facet of the creatives that were involved, and continue to set the stage for what is shaping to be one of the most impressive album releases of 2022. Don’t miss ‘Pillow Talk’ below.

Rustie. Lido. Flume. All names that come to mind when thinking back to the original days of future bass. One name that is often forgotten but that deserves recognition among the greatest is What So Not. A true trendsetter in the electronic music scene, What So Not has recently impressed with his unparalleled versatility, but most of us grew fond of the artist earlier last decade when the Australian continued to innovate in the realm of trap and future bass. Among his most notable in the latter category is his take on RÜFÜS DU SOL’s ‘Innerbloom,’ a true classic worth highlighting once again.

RÜFÜS DU SOL’s original is a nine-minute opus that broke barriers between electronic and acoustic music. Despite cutting the length by more than half, What So Not doubled the ecstasy throughout his remix, lacing it with raw intensity and a natural festival aura that instantly appealed to the masses. The original vocals and emotion are left intact, but What So Not upped the anthem-factor exponentially to create one of his most iconic tracks to date. Dive into the ‘Innerbloom’ remix below.

The former has recently been exploring new avenues with his musical direction, often tapping vocalists to drive emotion in his melodic-driven pieces. Similarly, What So Not has also been delving into new realms of electronic music as he has done so often in the past, diving into drum & bass among other genres over the last few months. This elaborate versatility from both artists has enticed them to finally come together on a track which finally sees the light of day today.

Featuring The Chain Gang of 1974, ’20:25′ is a magical, extravagant piece that highlights the strengths of all members involved. Although several elements can be attributed to a specific producer, these influences come together to form a spine-chilling melodic piece that will evoke a plethora of emotions. What So Not’s synths and vocal processing drive the introduction, before Flux Pavilion’s influence and distinctive percussion chime in to bring listeners to the track’s climax. As the seventy-five second mark hits, all styles come together in intricate layers of melodies, chords and vocals to create a feel-good, summer-extending vibe that will undoubtedly put a smile on your face.

With a hometown such as Perth, Australia prevision for an inexplicable production talent soars with latest to poke his head from the land down under CALIBR. Having thoroughly demonstrated an eye for innovation with a rework of Kuren’s ‘This Still Hurts’ early on his career, it comes as no real surprise that his latest interpretation of ‘Gemini’ by What So Not would set the bar even higher.

Released nearly 4 years ago at a time when the trap genre was still in its beginnings, ‘Gemini’ provided a beacon of hope that a more melodic side of the genre can just as easily coexist with the emphasis on production that gives the genre its individuality. A song that has received such overwhelming recognition, an opportunity for a fresh face to lace modern potency presents an invigorating future for a track the community has grown to love wholeheartedly.

The slightest production intricacies and light percussion present exquisite enrichment to the nostalgic introduction to the track. As the melody reaches its second loop, pulsating energy craftily builds into an electrifying riser, which brings the track to a peak, launching into a cascade of obscure echoing synths and the tantalizing angelic harmony courtesy of George Maple.

Expertly implementing the most crucial features of the original, while providing an unmistakable dark, ominous energy through his own brilliance, CALIBR breathes new life into a What So Not classic.

A strong contender for project of the year, What So Not‘s debut album Not All The Beautiful Things greatly surpassed all expectations. Chris Emerson explored foreign territories while staying true to his roots with pristine production matched with unparalleled versatility. So, when the legendary Aussie producer announced (more) remixes for Not All The Beautiful Things, fans wished for added diversity and continued greatness. Fortunately, both of these criteria were met, and once again, exceeded.

A combination of electronic music’s most esteemed artists and fastest rising up-and-comers, the eleven-track remix album is sure to tap into all of your senses. Boasting flips of ‘Stuck In Orbit’, ‘Goh’, ‘Beautiful’ and ‘If You Only Knew’, each remix offers a different musical experience bound to please a wide range of listeners.

Slow Hours member Kidswaste and Anjuna-favourite Luttrell tackled ‘Stuck In Orbit’, sharing a serene yet groovy and a melodic techno take on the track, respectively. ‘Goh’, the anthemic collaboration with Skrillex and KLP, was remixed by AC Slater, Champagne Drip and Signal, leaders in their respective genres. A funky bass line shines in the Night Bass founder’s offering, while Champagne Drip unleashes gritty bass madness in his work and Signal creates organized chaos in his astounding remix. Flawless future bass from graves, wonky havoc from Daktyl and genre-defying bass from 12th Planet briefly describe the brilliance behind the ‘If You Only Knew’ remixes. Finally, Yvng Jalapeño, Eskei83 and MaRLo round out the wild journey with banging takes on ‘Beautiful’, left for you to discover on your own.

It would be a sin to try to put the artistry behind each remix into words, which is why you should give each one a listen and find your personal favourite. Check out the Not All The Beautiful Things remixes below!

Australian producer Chris Emerson aka What So Not, sure knows how to make a banger. There is no doubt about that. However, many wondered if he would be able to translate his ability to blend different genres into a fully-fledged and concise album. With his debut album, Not All The Beautiful Things, What So Not proves that his musicality is far beyond what the industry and fans alike would expect.

While the overall project shines, there are a couple moments that truly make the album special.

Warlord (feat. Slumberjack)

Emerson taps fellow Aussie producers Slumberjack to collaborate on the opening track for the album and it makes sense why. ‘Warlord’ opens with what sounds like trumpets and high-pitched synths, reminiscent of welcoming a ruler to the stage as they survey their land. When the heavy bass and drops that Slumberjack are known for finally hit, it’s like all out warfare. The rest of the song culminates into a somber ending, as the warlord looks over the destruction they have wrung. The song clocks in at 2 minutes and 55 seconds and each second is vital to the overall masterpiece that is its story.

Goh (feat. Skrillex & KLP)

Skrillex and Emerson have worked together before on ‘Waiting’ with RL Grime so this collaboration wasn’t a surprise, but the complexity in the track is. Skrillex is a juggernaut so the ability to hold one’s own on a track with him is commendable. In ‘Waiting’ the song felt like it was run by Skrillex and RL Grime with brief glimpses of WSN. However, on Goh, Emerson’s style of distorted guitars and brief relapses of swelling piano that accompany KLP’s soft vocals beautifully, are the true star of this song. Sure, Skrillex is still clearly in this song with his heavy drops and “yo!” interspersed, but Emerson is no longer being eclipsed by the giant, but standing beside him.

We Keep On Running (feat. Toto)

What So Not has a lot of surprise guests on his album, but the addition of Toto to the classic rock inspired ‘We Keep On Running’ is spectacular. The marriage of distorted guitars and synths gives off the impression that it could be off any album from the ‘Africa’ hit makers. The use of the instrumentation is key because it perfectly showcases Emerson’s ability as a producer and researcher. It is clear that ‘We Keep On Running’ was made with Toto in mind, with guitar and beats that sound like a call back to some of Toto’s old work rather than just the other way around. The song is a delight to listen to and when the chorus finally hits, listeners feel like Rocky at the top of the steps: invincible.

If You Only Knew (feat. San Holo & Daniel Johns)

If the vocals of any 80’s rock band had a baby with modern day electronic music, this would be the resulting child. The underlining guitar that is seen throughout reminds listeners of the trilling in a Santana song, while Daniel Johns’ voice conveys the power ballad quality that is credited to rockers like Steven Tyler. When the final chorus kicks in and the guitar is out in full force with Johns belting in high falsetto, it’s hard not to be transported to another age. ‘If You Only Knew’ showcases that when two geniuses like San Holo and What So Not come together with a truly magical singer, that a masterpiece can be born.

Monsters (feat. Michael Christmas & Tobi Lou)

Not All the Beautiful Things is an exemplary example of how an artist can be both the classic “EDM” artist with the drops and big hits, but also just be a simple producer with a fantastic beat. This minimalism is best displayed on the rap/hip-hop influenced track, ‘Monsters.’ We as listeners have been conditioned to believe that whenever a rapper and electronic producer collaborate that there is going to be an electronic music break after each verse. ‘Monsters’ is proof that this doesn’t have to be the case. The focus of this song is Michael Christmas and Tobi Lou. When Christmas raps, you aren’t on the edge of your seat waiting for a breakdown. When Lou comes in on the chorus, it is accompanied by a soft and slow backing rather than a loud and bellowing beat which allows his vocals to soar. It’s simple and clean. It’s beautiful.

It’s safe to say that Not All The Beautiful Things is a triumph for Emerson. The blending of genres and complexity that can be seen throughout the album is fresh and exciting. No two songs sound the same which could easily tip into a hot mess, but Emerson brings it back by including his penchant for musicality and live instrumentation into each track. This album breathes and flows with life and culture without feeling overproduced. It’s exciting and new and is only a glimpse as to what What So Not has yet to accomplish.
