Over the past year, one name that has risen out of the sea of aspiring bass producers is without a doubt the mind-bending MYTHM. In true SoundCloud fashion, MYTHM has developed an organic fan base behind consistently thrilling records filled with some of the best sound-design you’ll hear right now. With releases on Bassrush, Wormhole, and Saturate records, this young innovator is showing no signs of slowing down in the near future. This time MYTHM returns to Wormhole Music Group for newest EP, ANARCHY. This four-track EP is a prime indicator of what to expect from the MYTHM project moving forward. World-class sound design and creative sample-selection and manipulation are staples of the MYTHM project and this project is full of them. Needless to say, we were pumped to give this a good listen.

The project starts with ‘Anarchy’ which is a non-stop unrelenting speaker-rattling banger right from the get-go. While the percussion drives the energy, the insane movement of the lead sub-basses provides the dark and aggressive tone of this track. ‘Anarchy’ doesn’t stop until it’s over.

Moving on we have the glitchy sounding track, ‘Blade.’ Starting with the appearance of the lead bass sporadically in the intro we know exactly what we’re in for. ‘Blade’ goes on to defy all sorts of comfort listeners might have, but in the best way possible. MYTHM never allows us to get comfortable in one section of the track, before being launched into an equally aggressive section right after.

Next, up have the bone-crushing tune ‘Wicked’. Arguably the most aggressive of the four tracks of the project, ‘Wicked’ begins with an intro section that is straight out of satan’s dial-up computer, full of wildly modulating loops. This section leads right into a speaker knocking hip-hop-influenced drop section, sending you to infinity and beyond.

Last but not least we have the eerie track, ‘Dread.’ MYTHM takes us on a suspense-building ride during the intro and the build, but this time from a minimalistic approach. Just as we seem to be endlessly falling deeper and deeper into MYTHM’s abyss, we’re stuck with a jolt of energy from the drop. The young producer seems to effortlessly retain his staple aggressive tone in the record, while also being the most minimal of the four.

As a label consistently pushing innovative, experimental bass music to their following, Wormhole Music Group have grown to become a favourite in the underground scene. Despite going on a brief hiatus over the last few months, the label is now back in grand fashion with the release of LITLBIRD‘s THE VATICINATION EP, proving that great things take time. Ahead of its release on July 28th, we’re ecstatic to premiere ‘SOURCE CODE BX3,’ a track combining all the best elements from halftime, trap and beyond.

THE VATICINATION EP itself has been in the works for a while, with LITLBIRD stating that “‘SOURCE CODE BX3’ started as an almost fully finished song that was written over two years ago that could have been fine as is, but later I realized the feelings and the samples didn’t make sense for what my intentions were with music.” The artist adds, “this is a common process for me because these songs are like oil paintings that can be blended into a final form and are not concrete items.” This repeated modification process has made ‘SOURCE CODE BX3’ into a true work of art.

The project is a glimpse into a story that LITLBIRD is building in his imagination where AI has taken full control over the universe. ‘SOURCE CODE BX3’ reflects this narrative through its post-apocalyptic soundscapes, where an introduction building intrigue with its ominous aura soon grows into a glitchy drop of contorted madness. Combining rugged bass bars with uplifting notes, LITLBIRD demonstrates his production mastery as he flows seamlessly between styles and sounds. Keeping listeners hooked from start to finish through its unique progressions, ‘SOURCE CODE BX3’ is a bass brute that you don’t want to miss. Check it out below.

Ahead of their upcoming joint Relinquished EP out next week on Wormhole Music Group, Chicago-based Kromuh and Spades give us an early taste of what to expect today with the project’s title track.

No strangers to working together, ‘Relinquished’ is the product of two distinct minds meshing into one creative product. Sputtering your senses from the get-go with a quintessential halftime beat and a groovy melody to bop your head to, Kromuh and Spades quickly alter their trajectory with rugged bass as the track builds to its climax. Once the drop hits, let your nerves relinquish to the wicked flow and masterful sound design provided by the two producers, as the introductory melody is kept intact yet warped into brain-penetrating frequencies and layered over hefty bass. Boasting a second drop switch-up teetering the lines between halftime and experimental trap, ‘Relinquished’ is the definition of a versatile bass banger.

With the rest of the Relinquished EP promising more heat, keep your eyes peeled for its release on November 20th and let the title track tide you over until then!

A Bay area boy all about pushing the boundaries of what we know as bass music, Sidewalk Boy, has been tailoring beats towards exuberant fans of the experimental realm for some time now. Some songs are made to elicit emotional reactions from the listener, and others are made to spur straight up confusion. Sidewalk Boy definitely falls into the latter realm, as his soundscapes are wide and full-bodied, with a slightly ominous tinge. His latest release, the GODCORE EP, is a testament to his mental pool of creativity, practically frothing with originality at this point. Today we’ve had the pleasure of premiering a glorious single off it that truly captures the overall aesthetic of the body of work with ‘WHYYOUAINTFUCKINWITME??!!?!’

‘WHYYOUAINTFUCKINWITME??!!?!’ feels like the embodiment of Halloween night as a child. It’s your first year of trick-or-treating and you’re hot on the scene adorned in a white bed sheet with 3 holes in close proximity, anxious to get to the houses with the king-sized candy bars first before the rest of the kids had their fill. The autumn air is crisp on your face and the sound of crunching leaves is ever-following, as you make your way through the neighborhood. You’ve been told that spirits come out on this night, but you’re really unsure of what that means.

This sense of youthful adventure is captured perfectly in the opening of ‘WHYYOUAINTFUCKINWITME??!!?!’, as it’s a simple but energetic drum and snare combo with light vocals sprinkled intermittently. The first drop is when all the things that go bump in the night really come to life, as the song creates a shape much like the ghosts and ghouls that you’d always heard about finally come to life before your eyes. Just as a child discovers that being spooky for a single night a year can lead to elation instead of fright, this song creates a space that shows that just because a piece sounds dark it doesn’t have to scary. If we’re being very specific, it sounds quite reminiscent of the theme music for Bowser’s castle in the original Mario Bros, making sure you knew you were in a place of evil, but one that is most definitely conquerable. The end of this piece is much akin to the ending of a western movie, with the hero riding off into the sunset, their job finished to completion, and all things wicked banished back to their lairs.

Make sure to check out ‘WHYYOUAINTFUCKINWITME??!!?!’ below!

If you are as invested in SoundCloud as I am, you have go to pages you rely on for quality music. Wormhole Music Group happens to be one of those that I follow closely. As a result, I have been introduced to many artists, and also discovered a plethora of names I have never seen before. One of those being Kahji, back with his release ‘Catacombs‘. Today he returns with another preview of his upcoming Wormhole Music Group EP Cycles, with the track ‘Resurgence‘.

Based out of Portland, Kyle McCall warps time and sound in today’s release. The cleanliness behind the mix down further instigates its hypnosis feel. In addition, the first drop is inebriating as it sends you fully down the rabbit hole with bass bending low end. It carries a high energy that fluctuates between octaves allowing for a truly immersive listening experience. Coming back in on the second drop, it’s like trying to start a car that will not fully turn over on first try. It seems as if something is broken, but still has life. It eventually finds the energy again as the original drop sound is reintroduced before we depart from this journey through sound.

Listen to ‘Resurgence’ below in preparation for the release of Cycles on July 5th.

Brandon Sedano, or NOizON, has been on an absolute tear lately mechanizing sound waves for max destructive capabilities. Partnering with his friends at Missing Links, he’s found a sonic workshop to concoct some of the darkest and hardest hitting slappers in recent memory. The Reno/Tahoe based group pride themselves on being “forward thinking bass producers,” and boy is their work straight out of the future. Joining forces with Wormhole Music Group for the Cerebrus EP, NOizON has thrown his creation ‘Catacombs’ into the fold with sensationally titanic waves.

‘Catacombs’ is a head-first dive into what the end of the world would sound like if artificial intelligence became self-aware. This cybernetic warfare will undoubtedly not only turn heads, but also viciously snap them off as listeners’ necks are bent like twigs. Festival crowds will be veritable arsenals from the outrageous amounts of finger guns that will be elicited from this heater.

If you were unfamiliar with NOizON’s work before this, ‘Catacombs’ would surely make your ears stand at attention. This is an artist that any fan of the harder and more experimental realms of bass music should keep a close eye on. Make sure to check out ‘Catacombs’ for yourself below!

Despite constant claims that SoundCloud is dead, the platform continues to be the lifeblood of the underground. It’s the breeding ground for innovative new sounds and THE place to find the best new artists. While the volume of quality is higher than ever, the mass of mediocrity is equally at its apex. Thankfully there are a number of underground labels out here doing it for the culture, working everyday to help develop and showcase the next wave of producers. We’ve decided to highlight 8 of our favoruites. Check the list below and let us know if we missed anyone.

Below The Surface

Below The Surface burst onto the scene last year with Sounds From Below, a stellar compilation that featured releases from founders THRPY and soulecist. alongside sfam, TVBOO and more. Since then they’ve put out 3 more compilations and a slew of singles. Each release is a true piece of the underground. They’re committed to digging to find the best under-the-radar stars in bass music and putting them on full display.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/620695131″ params=”color=#0029ff&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

Dont Die At Work

Founded by HMU, Dont Die At Work is a label and clothing company based in LA. They started as “a reminder to work hard towards having the life you want, a movement founded on putting in that time and reaping the benefits in both your 9-5 and your 5-9”. The outlook speaks to creatives grinding ever day and dreaming about the future, while working to make it happen now. Their impressive Grind compilation kicked the year off with a bang and included the brain-bending single ‘Prehistoric’ from doppla & HMU. They’re constantly working to help break new sounds with single releases as well. ‘Cerepon’ and ‘Seizmo’ will give you a taste of the type of bass Dont Die at Work is slingin’. For even more DDAW be sure to check out their Day Of The Dead compilation.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/436406769″ params=”color=#0029ff&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

Liquid Ritual

Started as a radio show in 2016 and established as a label less than a year ago, Liquid Ritual has climbed its way to the top in an incredibly quick way. In this extremely short span of time, Kareful, LTHL and Stohou have not only brought their creation to the forefront of the recording industry with iconic releases and a fabulous debut compilation, but also have expanded their action into shows, hosting a series of branded events in their hometown London and all over Poland. It’s not a secret that Wave is slowly infiltrating in the mainstream (pushed by names the likes of Virtual Self and Stooki Sound) and thanks to its marked identity, proved maturity and endless dynamism, it seems Liquid Ritual is ready to take the lead of the Wave movement. I don’t know if, as Stohou said, “Skrillex is going to be making Wave in a year or two,” but this UK label will be there for sure.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/540443109″ params=”color=#0029ff&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

Lost Dogz

“We’re not a Label. We’re not a collective. We are a cult of best friends.” That’s how Lost Dogz recently described themselves. While they may not technically consider themselves a collective or label, leaving them off this list would be near criminal. Leaders in the minimal yet heavy bass space, they’ve helped to change the direction of trap and bass music across the industry. Their “cult” features a who’s who of innovators including Abelation, Milano, Untitld, Sktchy Ppl, Chrome Republic, Eazybaked, Chrome, Snuggles, Cambot, Player Dave & Vide. We’ve already featured 2 of the Dogz in our Focus Five segments and could easily run through the whole list. Lost Dogz’s sound is dark, dirty, distinctive, and dank but always fresh. If you’re sick of bright and cheery future bass, Lost Dogz are the perfect antithesis. Hit their SoundCloud and tell me it doesn’t get your tail wagging.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/633887202″ params=”color=#0029ff&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

Misc.

Miscellaneous: home to everything you’ve never heard before. Just good music. Ambitious? Yes. Excessive? Hell no. The good folks behind Misc. are definitely not some random guys, since they’re responsible for one of my favourite bass compilations of the year. ‘Guest Vol. 2’ is a collection that should be on the top of every experimental bass junkie’s library and it’s a mirror that reflects the soul of the whole project. Freedom of expression is the only rule that is seen reflected in more than one hundred releases, among which you can find plenty of illustrious names. Capshun, episcool, Sofasound, Rohaan, Rome in Silver, and Great Dane are just some of the brilliant minds appeared under Misc.’s emblem with intriguing and unexpected creative works. This is a label I never forget to mention as an example when I find myself talking and defending the real underground movement.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/552545664″ params=”color=#0029ff&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

Night Owl Collective

Night Owl Collective is a giant, a pillar of the SoundCloud community, an example and a model to admire and to take inspiration from. If you really have no idea what I’m talking about and you’ve never come across one of its monumental compilations, you better get out of your cave and listen up. With its 50k followers, the Owl is playing a pivotal role in the scene, ensuring a non-stop flow of new music from both well-known acts and newcomers. Its well deserved reputation suggests and encourages a positive and open-minded approach to every release that goes beyond the popularity of the artists’ names. Night Owl Collective isn’t just a label anymore, it’s a world apart, an all-out experience.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/482393172″ params=”color=#0029ff&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

Phuture Collective

A lot of platforms claim to be the future, very few truly embody it. Phuture Collective however proves time and time again just how ahead of the curve they truly are. Their thematic compilations are some of the best out. Not only do they feature a cross-section of the most talented artists around, they actually sound cohesive and carefully curated. Each track is different shade or colour on the same canvas and Phuture is crafting works of art. While their releases speak for themselves, it’s really their knack for finding and helping to foster underground talent. Few people stay ahead of us but when it comes to the future of music, but with Phuture, I often feel like I’m catching up. If you’re trying to stay ahead of the game, Phuture is one of your most reliable sources.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/619143603″ params=”color=#0029ff&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

Wormhole Music Group

One of Soundcloud’s strongholds has always been its ability to allow you to go through the next song you didn’t know you needed. Its dashboard is like a surprise package that you can unwrap again and again, day after day, always finding a new gift. Too often, however, it’s so overloaded with reposts that it’s quite a mission to bring out something good from that jungle, for this reason I guess everyone has their aces up their sleeve. Mine has always been WMG. Trying to forecast the nature of the new releases is always a shot in the dark, a mission impossible. “Forward-thinking, next-level bass music sounds that defy genre and push boundaries” is the label’s mantra, something that I know you’ve heard tons of times, but trust me, here you’re in good hands. From dark, mental, post-apocalyptic Trap to melodic Jazztronic inspired-vibes, passing by glitched, funky, weird and wonky cartoonstep bangers, Wormhole Music Group is the eldorado for any hardcore and open-minded bass music lover.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/637916562″ params=”color=#0029ff&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

The weird side of bass music is emerging from the dephts of SoundCloud’s dungeons and it’s beyond fantastic to see young and new producers going in with such incredible ideas. They’re breaking clichès and pushing boundaries faster than ever before. The not-so-unexpected partnership between the iconic Wormhole Music Group and the two youngsters that are leet and Jon Casey is, alongside Jadu Dala latest release, the very finest example of this trend.

Despite the undeniable minimalism, there’s plenty do enjoy in ‘Drizzle’. Every sound deserves our attention, deserves to be appreciated both as a standalone for their astounding oddity, and for their key roles inside the composition.

There’s no need to worry by the way, whether you’re a long-dated sound designer or just a random listener, ‘Drizzle’ will blow your mind in a single stroke anyway. Check it out below and download for free here.
