New Zealand’s Haan808 has been lowkey killing it. From collaborations with Sango & Montell2099, to an incredibly impressive EP with Good Enuff, those who know about about Haan808, know just how great his potential truly is. With that being said, it should come as no surprise to see Quality Goods Records backing the slept on talent with an upcoming EP and brand new single. Giving us a taste of what’s to come is ‘Letting Go’ alongside Brooklyn rapper Yuneer Gainz.

Illustrating Haan’s aptitude for collaboration and diversity, this one blurs the lines between hip hop, trap and future feels. Rolling synths and filtered drums set the tone. Vocal bends add both warmth and a slight chill to the introduction. The instrumental drop is funky and thick with bass, before moving keys shift the direction and provide the bed for Yuneer’s bars. The chemistry between producer and rapper is at a peak on ‘Letting Go,’ with each passing the spotlight back and forth with ease. Classic NY rap flavour mingles with forward-thinking Kiwi knock, don’t miss this one.

Australian trap artist LOLO BX is a small town kid with big time dreams. In the past few years he’s had premieres and features showcasing his unique blend of hip-hop, trap, and electronic productions on Run The Trap, Nest HQ and Pilerats. Along with this, he’s also been on rotation on national radio station Triple J, and has DJ’d shows across Australia. Now, he has ended a several month hiatus with our premiere of his first audio/visual experience ‘Pulled Up’.

His latest work ‘Pulled Up’ with Brooklyn-based rapper Yuneer Gainz is a fist-pumping slap fest of thick 808’s and catchy vocal hooks. LOLO BX attributes his introduction with Yuneer to Ian Munro, stating “I first heard Yuneer on his record ‘Right Now’ which is an absolute belter. Yuneer was my first choice for ‘Pulled Up’ so I slid into the DM’s and was stoked when he was keen to work on the tune. I had that anthemic vision in mind so I demoed a rough vocal hook to help convey it. Yuneer got the vision but completely made it his own and came back with something heaps better. He only took one session, sent over the vocal stems and I pieced things together.”

‘Pulled Up’ originally started its life as a bootleg, but was almost immediately taken down from SoundCloud. LOLO BX states, “The drop was all mine so I decided to build an original around it. Turns out things happen for a reason because I ended up liking the new version heaps more. Most of my bootlegs are rap-driven so it feels good to finally bring that energy into an original.”

Now, not only is the song production top notch, but there’s also an entire visual project done by LOLO BX to accompany it. Taking inspiration from the days of 8-bit video games, the producer now reveals his visual artistic side with a handcrafted music video that is truly a labor of love.

“The 8-bit thing is something I’ve wanted to do for a while but the task seemed too overwhelming. This record was the perfect opportunity to bite the bullet – Yuneer and I are on opposite sides of the world but we could both star in a cartoon music video. I’m a graphic designer by day, so I had the tools and some of the skills already and the rest I just learned as I went. This was definitely my first time making anything like this but Youtube was my friend.

The process was basically: Sketch a storyboard, list every character/object/background required, draw them in Photoshop pixel by pixel (multiple frames of each), piece everything together in After Effects. I had to work out how to convey movement with as few frames as possible, and ended up with around 200 different frames that I cut together to form loops and went from there. It took a month or two, but I’ve got the process down now and am halfway through the next one.

I’ve loved making visual art since I was kid but it’s only recently I’ve started unlocking ways to use it to complement my music. I feel like I was neglecting a big part of my creative arsenal. It’s fun adding another dimension and creating an experience around the audio which is something I hope to build on with all of my future releases.”

Don’t be fooled by the cartoonish aesthetic of the music video, the production on this song is not for the faint of the heart. With exceedingly impressive levels of quality for his first ever audio/visual experience, fans will surely be eagerly awaiting for what he’ll be unleashing next. Make sure to check out what could be the trap anthem of the summer below!

Having only released his last single in March, bass talent Ian Munro makes a return with ‘Right Now.’ Again self-releasing it, this track features some exceptional bars from Yuneer Gainz and really hits the spot.
