Following the initiative of Vlad Yaremchuk and Rhys Bainham, two promoters based in Ukraine, the bass and drum&bass community have come together to show unity, solidarity, support, and a common response to the current, dramatic situation in the country. Responding to the call to participate in Together With Ukraine were more than one hundred international artists, who contributed with exclusive unreleased music to what has become the biggest compilation I’ve ever seen. Together With Ukraine is available to purchase on Bandcamp for a minimum price of £12 and all the revenue generated will be donated directly to the Ukrainian Red Cross Society.

In the tracklist, drum&bass is predominant, but among the 136 tracks there is a varied representation of the wide spectrum of bass music (there’s even a touch of wave courtesy of Deadcrow). There is no shortage of well-known FUXWITHIT favorites such as Noisia, Dj Ride, Rohaan, gyrofield, IMANU, yunis, and some personal favorites of the undersigned like Balatron, latesleeper, Monrroe, Bop, and basically all the Hospital Record affiliated artists.

Sadly, this time the music is not the focus of the discussion, but only a means to convey a much more important message in support of Ukraine. For this reason, we leave room for those who are experiencing the situation and experiencing its effects firsthand. Below you can find the official statement published by the organizers.

With every day that passes, the high-scale humanitarian crisis and assault on the people of Ukraine continues to worsen. Civilian deaths are increasing on a daily basis across the country with no sign of stopping, with millions of citizens already forced out of their homes in search of refuge. As we wake up to yet another day of war, hundreds more innocent lives have been lost and destroyed overnight. We cannot leave this unchecked, and we need to act on this now without hesitation. Now more than ever is a time for unity, solidarity and support of a nation under attack. It’s crucial for us to use our voice to create widespread and sustained awareness of the situation on the ground in Ukraine, and to give support in every way possible. Whether it’s signing petitions, attending demonstrations, sharing facts on social media, offering help for refugees, or more – this situation cannot be allowed to continue, and engaging in support of any kind for the people of Ukraine is our absolute priority.

You can listen and purchase Together With Ukrain on Bandcamp here (the donations received so far amount to over £54,000). Alongside the exclusive tracks, there’re also over 30 pieces of bespoke visual art, with art direction by Uno.

“The amygdala is one of two almond-shaped clusters of nuclei located deep and medially within the temporal lobes of the brain in complex vertebrates, including humans. As part of the limbic system, the amygdalae perform a primary role in the processing of memory, decision-making and emotional responses (including fear, anxiety, and aggression).” End of the neurology lesson, back to the music.

To be honest, when it comes to this new Amygdala EP (out on YUKU), it’s not so easy to separate the music from the concept behind it. We’ve already written many times about yunis’ renowned sound-craftsman skills, but never as in this project, has he built such pervasive storytelling around his productions. Knowing what an amygdala is, is just the first step of a long stair that climbs down into the artist’s vision of himself and the surrounding world. These were yunis’ last words before starting to speak through basslines and synths.

“I see myself as a receiving unit—sensing my surroundings, processing the emotions of others and myself, never knowing what’s true or untrue, never knowing if I have processed things in the right or wrong way, because somehow, one’s decisions will always be influenced by something or someone else. The emotional and physical contortions that society puppeteers us into manifesting.” – Yunis

‘Kosmos’ (produced in collaboration with SRP) is the incipit of the Amygdala experience, and let me say, what a hell of a welcome is this. It immediately states loud and clear that the EP will be a challenge where, from the very first second, yunis will play with our perceptions. The long, heavily filtered intro for example, resembles a menacing war march, but as the seconds pass, it’s clear that the climax our brains expect won’t arrive. This unease feeling of stalling continues even in the drop, which arrives without warning and charges the atmosphere with further repressed tension. It’s like watching a formidable thunderstorm from far away, that however will never come closer. As thunder and lightning arrive at your ears and eyes, you know that out there, in front of you, there’s an immense power way greater than you. Although, this distance acts as a barrier that will allow you to fathom just an illusion of its real potential. As the thunders and lightning in this vision, ‘Kosmos’ dry kick, deep sub and grave synths trigger a similar psychological game, keeping our fantasy on its toes and never letting this veil of mystery fall. How would the track have sounded with a more explosive drop? I’m afraid we’ll never know. Talking a bit more technically, the design here (and across all the seven tracks) is on absolutely crazy levels. The oscillating effect that pervades the track wonderfully conveys the ambiguous and uncertain atmosphere while every single sound reaches us clear and crystalline, from the smallest percussion to the deepest sub’s note.

You can now experience ‘Kosmos’ below and be sure to check out the whole Amygdala EP (which also includes a collaboration with Rohaan).

2017 was a massive year for Berlin-based Mad Zach, and it was all set into motion with the release of his barrier-breaking Fortress EP. Today, the versatile bass producer looks to give the five-track project a new life with epic remixes from Chee, yunis, Dub Phizix, Hybris and Safire.

With a remix that strays the vibe of the original, Chee only uses key elements from ‘Blood March,’ adding his signature touch of wicked bass and penetrating sound design to flip the track from a minimal drum & bass jam to a halftime heater. Yunis takes the already-wavy ‘Guerilla Project,’ removes some of the grittiness and adds a touch of bounce and tranquillity in his updated rendition. Dub Phizix flexes a natural flow in his take on ‘Robovox’ that is equally relentless in energy as it is in meticulousness. In his remix, Hybris takes the intergalactic soundscapes from ‘Fortress’ and flips them into a dirty neurofunk melter that reminds one of the soundtrack to defeating a final boss. Doing exactly the opposite with ‘Doran,’ Safire adds a futuristic layer of wobbly basses to hypnotize listeners with his flip of the original.

All in all, the Fortress remixes are a diverse set of bass tracks that are sure to please a wide array of fans. Don’t miss them below.

Berlin-based Mad Zach and yunis are no strangers to working together. From vibey pieces such as their Deskovery Island EP to grungier jams such as ‘Moro Cut,’ the possibilities are truly endless between these two.

Keeping their bass innovation alive, Mad Zach and yunis have joined forces once again, this time edging toward the latter theme in ‘What Is This Place?’ A drastic contrast to ‘Seek Refuge,’ the intense lead single from Mad Zach’s upcoming No Past Lives EP, ‘What Is This Place?’ is a mellow yet mystifying piece that will get you lost in your own thoughts. Eerie effects are accompanied by a natural percussive groove in the brief introduction, before Mad Zach and yunis pepper listeners with hypnotizing synths, reverberating basses and supernatural frequencies. Are you in the depths of hell? Are you on a beach? Is this what limbo sounds like? Nobody knows.

Drop what you know about and expect from typical song arrangements and let yourself be consumed by the spellbinding ‘What Is This Place?’ below.

If you’re still reading, good. That means you’re not strictly on a Lost Land kinda mood but, instead, on the right vibes to enjoy yunis’ new EP. I know the Berlin-based producer isn’t exactly the softest producer on the table, but rarely do his productions take a hardcore drift. Everything Aligned, released on Mad Lab imprint, amalgamate meditative feelings with halftime, Bedouin echos with d&b, gritty basses and esoteric vocal samples. It’s a nine-minute ritual. A sabbath that releases your mind from any bond and elevates it on an metaphysical plane, free to roam between space and time, energy and matter.

Sounds like a dadaistic performance? Don’t worry, yunis’ unblemished sound design and stylistic choices keep every single piece of the puzzle in the right place, at the right moment.

Two collaborations, one original and one remix: this is the winning combination with which Rohaan has won the pot in the last thirty days. This has been such a magistral play from the UK producer who, confident of his hand, has put everything he had on the table with a risky all-in.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/497116764″ params=”color=#183aba&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

First card revealed, first hit scored. Rohaan really has no chill. The opening tune of the series may sound familiar to most of you since it is the vocal version of the wonderful collaborations with the fellow Norwegian producer Hanz. Originally released at the beginning of the year, with this update, ‘Thorns’ has been elevated from the status of magnificent instrumental ballad, to an extraordinary, emotional anthem about that internal battle of accepting the feelings of loosing a loved one. The delightful voice of Adeline Um gently hugs the original strings, percussion, and melodies, lifting the song to even more celestial vibes.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/499934337″ params=”color=#183aba&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

The second ace in Rohaan’s hand is another joint venture, this time alongside the duo Duke and Jones. Already tested with a previous release on Circus, this time the team has landed on the iconic Deadbeats with a devilish, sick tune. The trance arpeggiated intro is just here to deceive you, since the devil drop is a chimera with a dubstep soul, but deeply contaminated by trap, vomitstep, and what I’d like to call Jadu-bass.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/502301946″ params=”color=#183aba&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Another card down, another attestation of why Rohaan is one of my favourites. As I’ve said many times before, remixing is one of the noble arts of electronic music, and guess what? Mr. Grey is quite a pro in this field. His talent and vision for reworking others’ music is truly stellar. Take this Yunis remix. You can feel the vibes of the original ‘Mitra‘, but that’s not all. He goes beyond that, and after sharing a similar incipient, the remix takes off roaming near UK Bass, Techno and Drum&Bass territories.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/507898632″ params=”color=#183aba&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

“Welcome to Zewada, the start of a journey,” is how Rohaan unveils the last piece of his hand, and it definitely sounds exciting. “Some new emotion captured in this and a pointer to a new progression I’m developing” are the words chosen by the creator himself to explain the enigmatic preface, but much is still left to fantasy and speculation. The only evident fact in our hands is that, it’s not the sound we’d expect from Rohaan, but is impossible to complain about. ‘Zewada’ is simply so good. It’s like getting hit by the first beams of the morning sun or watching a suggestive the sunrise awaking the senses of the planet from the top of a mountain. Even if you’re not so inspired and it simply reminds you of some Naruto scenes, ‘Zewada’ and its brilliant flute sample will win over your.

Each track is a collaborative effort with some of the brightest producers out including: sumthin sumthin, great dane, yunis & yheti. There are no standouts because they are all standouts. Each track is a different direction that leads you deeper down the rabbit hole. It’s dark, disorienting and at times maddening, but it’s always incredible. Yet another example comes in the form of a compilation from newly established South African label DREAMCORP. Founded by Yung Frankenstein, their goal is to bring more South African bass producers together, and create a brand. But more importantly, a culture amongst the up-and-coming producers. The project sees a long list of incredible producers from South Africa and abroad. The boomin’ bass will incite an array of emotions, from uneasiness (‘Kura’) to anxiety (‘Philophobia’ & ‘Drowning’) to turnt (‘Breakdown,’ ‘Fuego’). Turnt is an emotion right? Stream Malware below and be sure to scoop that free download.
