If you’re an underground trap fan chances are you’re familiar with ZCR. The producer has been a mainstay in the scene, heating up SoundCloud with a wide array of originals and bootlegs. After landing a variety of tracks in FUXWITHITFRIDAYS we had the pleasure of premiering ‘AKOBAI’ back in 2019, as well as featuring his collab alongside GURF, and his latest EP on our site late last year. With a heavily hip-hop-leaning sound that packs heavy bass and aggressive production it’s no surprise that ZCR has landed releases on labels like Space Yacht, Alter/Ego, Partica Artist Group, Sus Collective, and more.

Today we have the pleasure of ZCR joining us for a brand new guest mix + interview. The mix fittingly swerves between trap, bass, and rap, for an in-your-face 30 minutes of heat. Our interview highlights his favourite spots in LA, his love for flips, how being a visual designer impacts his music, designing jewelry for the Superbowl and Drake, what’s next, and more. Dive in below.

Tell us about the mix you put together. What’s this the soundtrack for?

This mix is a way to introduce myself and show my free-format style. Imagine riding around with me on a summer day in my 2007 Pontiac Vibe. 30 minutes no AC, windows up, stereos at max volume – this is pretty much what you would hear.

Were you born and raised in LA? What are your favorite spots in the city?

No, I grew up in a small town outside of Syracuse, NY. I’ve been living out here for about 5 years though. I live in Ktown so probably Shatto Lanes, Boo’s Philly Cheesesteaks, Road to Seoul, and HMS Bounty.

Your catalog certainly features no shortage of bangers. What are the key ingredients in a signature ZCR heater?

Definitely loud 808, metallic percussion, heavy-handed drums, distorted synths, and my tag, are some that come to mind.

Flips and edits seem to be becoming a bit of a lost art but you’ve been dropping some incredible ones. What drives you to remix a track?

I’ve needed ways to keep producing fun these days and flips have been one. Also I noticed how exciting it is for a listener to hear a well-known song taken in a new direction. Whether it’s a nostalgic trap song, or a popular song from the 2000’s. They can be a bit more digestible for new listeners and a fun tool for DJ’s.

You’re both a producer and visual designer. How do the two complement each other?

It’s not something I’ve really thought of before. I think design and production both require similar elements in the creation process: storytelling, balance, movement, mood, contrast, etc.. My art frequently utilizes empty space, which is something I’ve learned to take into production. Utilizing silence, or having the absence of a note is just as, if not more powerful than having one.

Do visual ideas you have ever inspire musical ideas?

Definitely, I actually made the art for my debut EP, “Is There No One Else” before making most of the tracks on the final version. I think it kind of helped me narrow down the mood/sonics of the project.

I saw on Twitter you also design jewelry as your day job. How did that come to be? What’s the wildest piece you’ve ever done?

Yeah it was pretty random, I have a BFA in Graphic Design and was applying for every entry-level job imaginable when I got to LA. Ended up going through the interview process with JBH and have been working there since. I’ve designed a lot of wild stuff. From NBA Finals/Super Bowl Championship rings for teams like: LA Lakers, GS Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. To Drake’s diamond iphone case, or a diamond & gold ring that functions as a lighter. I’ve even designed random shit like a 3D penis pendant and a 4-finger ring that reads “C*NT” in an elegant cursive font.

What’s the most recent album that’s been stuck on repeat for you? What keeps you coming back to it?

It’s hard to pick but probably Corbin – ghost with skin and not scared enough by Bobby Raps. The emotive quality from their vocals is something that’s really connected with me. Great beat selection and their dark rnb/trap mixture definitely keeps me coming back. Plus, they have such a signature style that’s so distinct and kind of mirror one another. I remember listening to XanaX Damage by Future, thinking “Damn, this sounds just like Bobby Raps” – finding later that he co-wrote and produced it.

What does a perfect day look like to you?

Probably do something active (basketball, workout, hike,) make one piece of music (beat, flip, original), drink some light beer and hang with my dogs.

What should fans expect from you in the near future?

More rap placements with my guys Kamiyada, Trippythakid, Bambi, & MNS members. I’ll be rolling out music videos for original songs, a bunch of flips and edits. I’m really trying to flood the market this year.

Partica Artist Group & Midnight Society member, ZCR, has released a plethora of tracks since he started producing over 6 years ago, and in total there are 35 originals if you take a peek at his SoundCloud. With such an extensive body of work, ZCR has grown into a truly unique producer who doesn’t shy away from experimental sounds. ZCR has recently released his debut EP, IS THERE NO ONE ELSE, and it’s a true testament to their roots as a producer and how much they’ve grown.

The first track off ZCR’s, IS THERE NO ONE ELSE EP, is aptly titled, ‘WELCOME’, and it’s not your usual warm welcome. It begins as an old record, with a voice welcoming you to the experience, but the track quickly melts away, leaving a large, dark, and apprehensive drop in its place. The arrangement and flow of ‘WELCOME’ is truly something special, and ZCR really goes to work on the second drop, filling the track with energy from a thick static bass that tickles your ears with sub frequencies. The second track, ‘LOST MY MIND’ featuring TrippyThaKid is one of the standout tracks on the EP due to TrippyThaKid’s verses and the switch up on the second drop that is sure to light up dance floors. ‘SCREAM AND HOPE’ is the third track on the EP, and ZCR creates a constantly shifting synth that gets paired with some top-notch percussion, infecting listeners with the groove and pulling them deeper into the EP.

The fourth track on the EP, ‘HELLION’ continues the aggressive assault ZCR has laid out in previous tracks. ‘HELLION’ feels like a descent into a special industrial hellscape where instead of flames, there’s white noise, as ZCR miraculously turns what sounds like a screaming vocal sample into a lead that carries the track. The last track on IS THERE NO ONE ELSE is ‘ABOVE THE LAW’ and is another stand-out track for me. Filled with dark and heavy elements, ZCR gives us his style on a more house-influenced track to showcase that his sound isn’t defined by genres and he can deliver almost anything.

ZCR created a truly cohesive and special experience on his IS THERE NO ONE ELSE EP, crafting his tracks with serious energy and depth, while unafraid of venturing into industrial and experimental lands.

Be sure to check out IS THERE NO ONE ELSE below.

Heating up your Summer vacation, the team over at Partica Artist Group have finally dropped their anticipated HEATWAVE compilation album. Released in two parts called Side A and Side B they’ve gathered only the best of the best within the Partica vision to join forces for this monumental step. Artists such as golden child, Runnit, Scullion and more have each collaborated with their good friends to create some of the most forward-driven electronic music to date.

Ever since the beginning, Partica has been a huge symbol of inspiration and hope for many up-and-comers. Their impressive roster of gems have molded their brand into something purely remarkable and memorable. Helping producers out no matter the skill level. Always putting their love for the community first. And with this brand new chapter, they’ve yet again taken over the underground by storm. As well as honoring their incredible discography of musicians.

The HEATWAVE compilation is the next best step for the future of groovy bass music. Focusing on pure rhythm and sound design, each collaboration has its own distinct features from the highlighted artists. Adding signature textures we’ve all come to notice and adore. From funky arrangements, whimsical sample selection and out-of-this-world sound design, you’ll start to notice who these hard-working souls are as humans as well as creative individuals. Each track is carefully formed and taken care of with passion.

The unpredictability from just the names on here alone sets the bar quite high. But it’s easy to say their efforts and unique work ethics have done themselves and the Partica brand justice. You’ll find yourself bopping your head or moving your feet through every second of this album. Creating a lifelong and positive feeling you’ll cherish forever. Bravo to this incredible community and its artists. We’re excited to hear where they go next. But for now, make sure to go support these icons by streaming The HEATWAVE compilation everywhere via Partica Artist Group.

With an overflowing handful of bangers between them, it’s a good sign when we get to celebrate the new year with a new Partica artist collab. GURF and ZCR have teamed up on ‘Ice’ in 2021, and we made sure to grab a jacket.

‘Ice’ begins with a spooky beat that sends chills down your spine, that slowly builds into a flurry of whipping synths and frosty vocals at the drop. There’s a spark during the bridge that erupts during the second drop into warm, 8-bit-like wubs that overtake your speakers.

If you’re not familiar with Myopic Sounds or Partica Artist Group, I hate to tell you, but you’re missing out on some of the best up and coming trap in the scene right now. Myopic Sounds is an LA based collective that started releasing tracks 6 months ago, but have an incredible selection of 31 tracks to date. Partica Artist Group has an insanely stacked roster, boasting names like Runnit, GURF, and XTALS; each release is better than the last. Both groups are steadily churning out jaw-dropping tracks, and with such a similar taste in trap music, a collaborative compilation only seemed natural. Each track on the ‘Myopic vs. Partica – All Star Compilation’ is a hit, and the entire compilation is an absolute home run.

Runnit and Litty McGuire’s wonky banger ‘LETIGO‘ is a perfect introduction to the compilation, giving listeners a high energy track to fully let themselves go. GURF and ZCR’s ‘FIGHT’ is an eerie step into a dark dimension that delivers a knockout punch. ‘GAMMA’ by XAVIER and U.O.ME overload their systems and pour out a thick bass banger that is sure to rock any speaker. RAFTYR and SIXPATHS’ ‘PULL UP’ is a wiggly bass track that weaves through immense sound design. Finally, jordnmoody and sømething craft an absolutely out of this world banger on, ‘FIU’, with hypnotizing soundscapes and an intoxicating energy, it’s one of the standouts on the compilation.

The entire compilation is available to stream, and you can download it for free here.

Have you ever wondered what it might sound like if 9 of SoundCloud’s hottest underground producers got together on one song? Well today is your lucky day, because we get the answer with the release of ‘Mug Club V1’. The mega collab see Runnit connecting with XTALS, Klavay, bd hbt, gurf, DHITTO, ZCR, XAVIER, and RAFTYR for an absolute banger. So how does a collaboration of this proportion come together? “We have a tight community around Partica and like to share samples a ton; everybody was starting to collab with each other, new members with old ones and I decided to attempt one huge collab to bring together everyone that’s helped me and Partica grow in the past year. Originally it was going to be called ‘Apex,’ and I just thought, how can I combine the idea of sample challenges and collabing together in the easiest way without going down a rabbit hole of organizing all these people into one project? So we set the challenge up that everyone sent me stems to an idea at 136bpm and E minor,” Runnit explains.

The song’s title takes inspiration from Runnit’s name, which comes from the idea of running up on someone and mugging their ears. He further elaborates saying, “Mug Club is just my team rising together and the name is a reminder that no one will build your passion up for you, gotta go out and get it.” The track takes collaboration to new heights with each artist adding something special to the track.“Raftyr, Klavay & Dhitto’s stems helped enormously with the chord progression and melodic stuff in the intro and end-bar melody. Gurf, XTALS, & Xavier’s stems I used a ton of their basses for resampling. ZCR & Bd Hbt’s stems I used a decent amount of their percusssion/FX hits in the build and 2nd drop,” Runnit tells us about the production process. From there, Runnit acted as a mad scientist, resampling, structuring and stitching the track into its final form.

The hard work clearly pays off in ‘Mug Club V1.’ It’s a certified slapper with alluring melodies, hard hip-hop samples, brain-bending sound design and bass, and enough variety to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. Check out the mega collab below and grab the free download. Be sure to look out for more installments of the Mug Club series in the future.

The underground bass music scene is currently on a wave. Adding further force to the rising tide comes MYOPIC SOUNDS, a new collective straight out of Los Angeles. Their goal and driving force is fairly simply, “I created MYOPIC SOUNDS because I always felt like as a new artist it would be dope to come up together with like-minded artists who inspire each other. Our core team is amazing and we share the same vision in bringing something new to the table that is lacking in the scene,” MYOPIC founder CAPTSIS tells about his need to bring the collective to life.

While they came together late last year, today marks their full out launch with their debut mixtape The Awakening. The project features familiar names in CAPTSIS, IANY, MIDNGHT, Jordnmoody & ZCR, plus a ton of fresh faces. As for how it all came together, “All of the track selection came together organically which is awesome. We started as a small core group of artists who wanted to start something new and fresh. From there some artists reached out to us and vice versa and we just invited them to this discord and built a small little community. That’s what I think separates this compilation from others is that all the people involved support each other one way or another,” CAPTSIS explains. The songs fit together nicely while all possessing their own unique facets. The Awakening is weird, bass-heavy and exciting at every turn.

What’s next on the horizon for MYOPIC SOUNDS? Captsis tell us, “A lot of dope stuff. Our main focus now is to create a new monthly event in LA that is a true representation of the underground bass music scene. Along with that we have more music ranging from singles and EPs that we are excited about.”We’ll certainly be keeping our eyes and ears out for more. For now, we’ll be enjoying The Awakening. He’s frequently landed in our FUXWITHITFRIDAYS features and today we have the pleasure of doing our first premiere with the LA-based producer. Out today on misc., ‘AKOBAI’ is built around an Africa chant that sounds like the song’s title. ZCR establishes a foundation that’s tribal and exotic allowing listeners to float through the jungle, drifting towards the entrancing chant. The dense trees open up to an energetic drum circle as bonfires burn and bodies turn to the pulsating beat. A brief break provides an air of uncertainty before we gear up for war. The final drop is an epic battle where ancient weapons and fighting styles clash against industrial invaders. With the ominous outro it’s uncertain which side proved victorious, but it’s clear this will be one that will not be forgotten.
